2007 Posting Contest with Cash Prizes! (WINNERS!)

Postby Remæus on Mon Nov 05, 2007 11:24 am

We're going to be running a posting contest for 30 days here on the forum beginning November 20th, and ending December 20th. Just in time for the holiday vacations, I hope - so everyone can make tons of posts in their free time.

Scores will be generated based on the number of posts you make during this period. But be careful; these posts are scored based on the quality of your post, so don't spam - you won't get as many points. We can't reveal how posts are scored, but here as some general rules you can follow to help you win the contest.

1. Posts are not scored based on length.
2. Spell check your posts.
3. Helping other members will increase your score.
4. Post intelligently - quick, one sentence posts will earn you far less points than a paragraph filled with great writing.
5. Participate in a role playing game: you'll be able to post back and forth and earn lots of points with your friends.
6. The contest counts all posts within the time period, from the Main Lobby to the Role Playing Games, and even includes threads in Debate and Discussion.

We will be giving away over $300 in cash prizes, including prizes given to the top 5 posters. We will regularly hold a lottery, with one chance per post, for some great prizes above and beyond the top post rewards.

The prizes:
1st place: $100. 2nd place: $75. 3rd place: $50. 4th and 5th place: $25.

The Winners!
View the scores here.

#1. jadelinghawkins: 372 total posts, scoring 2436 points. (12 posts per day)
#2. Angel_Melfina: 360 total posts, scoring 2219 points. (11.61 posts per day)
#3. MetusOccultus: 297 total posts, scoring 2050 points. (9.58 posts per day)
#4. aeleon: 214 total posts, scoring 2021 points. (6.9 posts per day)
#5. Tarmo: 217 total posts, scoring 1566 points. (7 posts per day)

Please PM me your preferred payment method and I'll get on sending everything out. (PayPal is the quickest!)

Two words.

Holy crap.

How are you keeping track? Where are you pulling the money from? Do you have a criteria list that you use when you read posts? How many people are working on this?

And, really, thanks for holding this event. It makes things a little more interesting.

Call me a pessimist, but would that $300 not be better put to use on the new server?

I mean, I do agree that it would certainly be fun to have the competition, and the incentive of cash prizes will put our post count up. But, as the number of posts we have increases, and people join to have this chance, will that not concurrently make the site slower?

Just a thought, that is all.

There's a very detailed set of criteria we're using to score each post, to the degree that we can use a very complicated algorithm to determine the base score of a post, and then hand rate each of them for further points. There will be a leaderboard posted that will keep a constant tally (give or take every 10 minutes) of the current scores. This should thoroughly increase the competition, too. :)

That's a good question, but i can use $300 and that would be real good to put to the server as well, this puts me a good and a bad place!!!! :(
William Faulkner once said "The man who moves a mountian begins by carrying away small stones"..... Do you believe this?

Goergia Herbert once Said "Storms make the oak grow deeper roots". This i know is true.

And Helen Keller said "No pessimist discoverd the secrets of the stars"......

the simallarities ar that all of these are true

Everyone is eligible - except me. I know how the ranking system works, so unless someone suggests otherwise, it wouldn't be fair for me to participate.

Hurr. I'm not sure how I feel about this, so go ahead and flog me. I think I agree with Saladin on the money going as a donation toward the server. I also rarely post so I don't know if I'll participate all of a sudden simply for money. Though it says I'm a writer for hire it's certainly not like that. I'll participate with the flood of interesting (hopefully) conversations and new RPGs, if any catch my fancy, but I don't want to participate for the money.

Ah! Sifu-sama!

Nice to see you're alive. How're things man?

And, I DO believe the idea to be a good one, I just feel that the money would be much better spent elsewhere.

But hey, I'm not staff. I do, however, put my two cents' worth in when I have it.

Seems Eric missed a few questions and suggestions, so I'll recap so he only has to look to one post for the info instead of siving past where he's allready posted:

1. Where are you getting this money from?
2. Why are you not setting this towards server donations?
3. Why do we need this compitition?

Now i have a few questions of my own:
- Is this compition critera judge a script/bot which'll be scoring posts according to specified templates, such as to get 10 points lets say you must have 2 commas in one sentense, and its 5 points for just one comma?

You dont have to answer that if it gives too much away, but I'd like a response and im sure everyone else would on the other questions - Cheers though dude, I may participate if the exchange rate from $ to £ goes up. Haha, £1 = $2.10 , not really a great deal when you're on my end and things are pricey.
"Is than an unfair advantage?"
"Yes"
"But im worth it ;D"

Kheelan Razor, just so you know, there was a change in the RPA rules, so that a student CAN post without restriction whilst in the Academy. Unless, of course, the Tutor has said otherwise.

Looking at yours and Skuld's thread, she has not said that, so feel free to join in on the competition.

Eric....question.

Since I'm often posting such a large post in the Gundam Academy, what would this do to my post?

I mean, I have a few people in the same post as mine....so, what are we going to do about that?
A Fallen Warrior am I, as I lay upon my back, knowing as I raise my eyes to the skies, as I lose the battle of my life, that I will never see again...those that I love. Blood and tears flow gently down my face as I await the final judgment...knowing that I am forever free, yet forever damned as I close my eyes and release my breath for the final time...

Dovie'andi se tovya sagain....It's time to toss the dice...Mat Cauthon-Robert Jordan...Wheel of Time series

"How do you prove that you exist? Maybe we don't exist..." - Vivi

"Having sworn fealty, must I spend my life in servitude?" - Steiner

"To be forgotten is worse than death." - Freya

"The only dependable thing about the future is uncertainty." - Amarant.

The content of a post will be scored and attributed to the author, on the same scale as other posts. Length and verbosity is not a major factor in the scoring method.

Of course Eric hasn't revealed the specifics to me either, but I can come up with a few theories of my own. For now, why not just enjoy the opportunity and strive to promote the central idea around this site: To promote GOOD QUALITY Roleplay and let this site be a hub for all to join in on. This site started with a unique method of working, and the structure of this site has changed considerably over the years. I think it has turned from opinion to fact by now that this site offers an environment unlike the others and more importantly a backbone that has long been supported by Eric even through the roughest times where most other sites end up falling to pieces. How he has managed to accomplish this I can't even imagine, and I think we should just leave it as "Eric works in mysterious ways." So go have fun and win some cash in the process!
