Might I venture a hypothesis that the reason people use fantasy fighting styles is because they do not possess the time, money, inclination, or some combination of the above to pursue the study of an actual martial art?
But as I've inferred from something you told me in chat today, there's too much debate about who's the best, who can beat whom, and so forth. The Hall of Records would have been great for bringing the various disparate communities of people on different boards who liked to text-fight, were it not for the ranking system to appease the competitive nature of most fighters.
Instead, it has exacerbated the problem (for which I do not blame Remaeus, though) and made people think that those that stand atop the rankings are to be respected, when in truth all one should give some people is a wide berth. True, it is in the Hall's mission statement that it aims to provide an avenue where fighters from different sites can meet, mingle, and test their skills against each other, providing a richer experience and more opportunities to learn and grow.
I have, however, heard, ab homo ipso (Latin for "from the man himself") that Nonpareil is bored of people challenging him...he gets at least 20 offers a day. All we can do now that the Kane vs. Martindale deal is finally going down is that we root for the latter and hope that the torch the former never should have had in the first place is finally passed.
The only people that extol the virtues of war are those that calculate its cost in material things.
