..and suddenly, an idea! Superpowers...but a bit different.

Thinking about starting a roleplay, but don't have the idea completely finished? Post it here, not in the main OOC forum!
So, I happened to stumble across a discussion on the forums regarding superpowers, and this ended up jolting me back to a discussion I had with an RPing friend some week previous. He mentioned that a lot of character with abilities don't stand up well as regular people, as their power is often their only defining characteristic.

I began dwelling on this, and I hit upon something, totally out of the blue, that I thought could, possibly, be interesting to try. I've been watching a lot of Being Human recently and I've admired how that's managed to extract the humanity from a supernatural show, and I thought this could also be done with gifted types.

Basically, it'd be a story about being with powers, brought down to earth. A group of a few people, possibly sharing a house or something, who have strange abilities. They'd need to be pretty well thought out ones of course..and I'd be hoping to find some awesome people who could take rather tired cliche abilities and rework them into something exciting, start really thinking about them.

-Would a fire manipulator be bricking it every time they were around gas/petrol stations?

-Would an electricity manipulator attract hostility from the housemates by inadvertently killing electrical items when he sneezes?

-How much bacon does a wolf shapeshifter get through in a week?

-Can a water manipulator ruin people's showers?

It'd be something that was character and interaction focused, rather than action and fighting focused (though of course bad things may happen as things go) and would be more about how these odd, unique characters attempt to blend in with the world and bounce off one another.

Please do post if any of this sort of thing might appeal to you.

This interests me greatly. While there are numerous superhuman roleplays--and let's face it, who doesn't want to be someone who can call upon the forces of nature and beyond on a whim--not many of them explore the drawbacks of being man+. I would love to join this roleplay.

Also, Being Human is an amazing show. Anything it inspires has to be amazing... except maybe the American version... I'm a purist, sue me.

I've never actually looked at the American version. Reactions from people I know who've seen it have varied from 'Eh, it's not as good as the original, but it's okay.' to 'SHUUNNNN' so I haven't really bothered too much with it.

Anyway, glad to hear I've got some interest. I've been a fan of RPs involving special abilities, but I often feel they rather gloss over a lot of the issues, and powers can often get used as a crutch to avoid developing a character much more than 'I have powers and they have made my life awesome/terrible'.

I'd like to try something that's a bit more down to earth about the whole thing. It's not to say that there won't be any sort of plot arcs with danger and the like, but I think it'd be all the more compelling if these were problems facing regular people who happen to have abilities, rather than a bunch of superheroes without the costumes.

I like it. Character development is my favorite part of a Roleplay. Unfortunately, it tends to be overshadowed by a railroaded plotline or an overbearing romance 'sub'-plot. While it's always easier to make a character that fits into a slot, it's a lot more fun to make a person with flaws and troubles. But I am rambling on about nothing. -shakes head- I am most definitely 'in' when this gets made. -nod--nod-

I just like the characters and how they played off one another in original version a lot more than the new ones. I may have just grown attached to them, but they feel more like people rather than characters. I like them a lot more, especially the werewolf and ghost. I was never really fond of Mitchell, but maybe because I was always biased against vampires... or he was too pretty... or something silly like that.

Holy crap! I love you, marry me. But seriously, I want to do this RP! I've been looking for something like this but am entirely too cowardly to try making one myself.

Some basics about me that you probably don't care about:
I usually play female though I am capable of playing a male character. I am most comfortable with hetero relationships though I don't mind branching out (though I can't promise a whole lot of quality at first with non-hetero) and I'm willing to try new things if you have any suggestions or things you would like to do in a RP.

I want in on this, desperately. I'm already thinking up bunches and bunches of possible characters over here. Character development is my favorite thing ever, oh, my gosh. I'm with BleedingCrimson on this one- I've wanted to do something like this for a while, but I never quite got up the nerve to try to put the thought into action.

Also, I've never actually seen Being Human... I watched part of one episode of the American version and gave up, but in all honesty, that doesn't mean much. I've never met an American version that was as fabulous as the original.
I usually play really weird characters, though: just a warning. They're hardly ever completely heterosexual (emphasis on the 'completely'), and almost always a tad bit insane with quirks out the wazoo. Seems to me that would be good for this, though, so (:
I can't wait to see this up and running!

Oh you certainly don't need to have seen it, or even heard of it, to enjoy the RP, it's just something that gave me the idea to deconstruct the genre a bit.

Quirky is something that I'd probably encourage on this, as it's going to have lots of focus on character development, and a lot about the characters playing off one another, so some differing personality types would be useful.

Anyway, once I've got my own character worked out, I'll make an RP and link it here.

Yeah! I'm planning on a female shape-shifting character who has animalistic tendencies she can't really control because of the shapeshifting and she's a bit socially awkward and blunt (because she wasn't allowed in society for a long time because she couldn't control the shifting itself).

Does this sound like a good character or is there anything else (requirements) I should be aware of?

This sounds really interesting. Also, I love Being Human. Both the original and the American. The stories are different enough that it's still interesting, though nothing quite so heartbreaking as the series three finale of the original has come along so far. Anyways, yeah. I'd love to be a part of this if you'll have me.

Definitely consider me interested. :)

Argh!
Super interested.
Don't know if it's still going on or
in the process of being created or anything
else, but just wanted to drop in my interest
as well. :]
