“No. I suppose a porcupine isn’t as dangerous as a tiger, but I wouldn’t call me not dangerous, either, Matthew,” she replied simply. “And, no, I don’t mind you pulling over to take a nap. I imagine I’ll need to sleep as well.” So, all right, yes, she was talking a lot, but she didn’t usually talk to anyone other than the customers that came through her line at the little grocery store she was employed at, and that was usually confined to ‘Hello…Thank you, have a good day…bye’. It wasn’t exactly intellectually stimulating. Okay, well, Matthew wasn’t really saying a lot to keep it intellectual either, but he was listening, and that was better than nothing.
When the car came to a stop she looked out the window to the ATM. “Ah, yes,” she pulled her bag into her lap and dug into it. Pulling out a small card, she opened the car door. She had one foot on the ground when a sudden fear struck her. What if he left her here? What if…after she got out…he just drove away? She looked over her shoulder at him. But he was just sitting there, a calm expression on his face. Patient. He wasn’t going anywhere. Shaking her head at her ridiculousness, she finished stepping out of the car. …she left the door open.
It was only a few steps to the machine. She put her card in, her PIN, and then drained her account. Seven one-hundred dollar bills, and four twenties in her hand, she came back to the car, slid back into her seat, and shut the door. She shoved the money into her bag. “Okay, done. Let’s go.”
