She stood at nearly the same time he did, adjusted her bag, and waited for him to reply. When he did, it wasn’t exactly what she had been expecting. Disappointment made her frown. She was going to ask him if he was sure, but he was already inside the bus, and she was still just standing there…like an idiot. Hurrying forward, she dug into her back pocket and pulled out her bus pass. She flashed it to the driver, and then turned to go down the aisle. She could see that he had chosen a seat in the back, and though she had all ready made up her mind that she wasn’t going to follow him and barrage him with more questions, it just so turned out that the only available seat was the one directly across from him. What an amazing and completely unexpected coincidence.
She took the available seat. The whole bus smelled like salt, like always. But it smelled like stale salt. Just like everyone else had smelled of stale salt…or sometimes even perfumed or rancid salt. Well, it was hard to describe, actually. You just had to have her nose to understand. But the man sitting across from her was different. She turned to look at him, but then looked away. She didn’t want him to open his eyes and catch her ogling again. The questions were eating her alive though. She felt like he’d lied to her. Even if she knew nothing about him, she was pretty sure he’d just lied to her. That was…stupid. And silly.
Maybe he really didn’t know what she was talking about. Who was she to say that he’d been lying? Just because her stomach got all twisted up into knots, and she felt let down, didn’t mean he had been untruthful. Even if he had been, he had no loyalty to her. He was not obligated to tell the truth. She wasn’t his judge. But, damn it, well, if he’d said that to her, she wouldn’t have lied! Which means, basically, that she did think he understood what she’d meant. Which meant he was lying.
She huffed and turned to him, giving into her curiosity once more, “Are you sure you have no idea what I’m talking about? I’m sorry if I seem pushy, but I-” her eyes landed on the sleeve of his shirt, and her brow perked, “Did you know you’re bleeding?”
