The street was filled with clocks.
Sparrow stood by the door to the shop, a small store which specialized in the devices, and stared at the mess. Watches, table clocks, wall clocks, all over the street, knocked over from a display stand which had just been carted outside. Some of the clocks looked like they may have survived the drop, but not all of them. Some lay on the floor, gears and springs exposed like guts to the pale sun.
Someone would have to clean it up.

Pen stopped short, his daydream interrupted. He had just kicked a.. clock? What was a clock doing in the middle of the street. He puzzled over this for a moment before lifting his head and looking around. His eyes fell on Sparrow and he pointed down at the device. "Is this one of yours?"

Sparrow looked toward Pen and smiled faintly. "No. Well, yes, sort of. Would you like to buy one?" She bent down and snatched a clock from the floor - a metal wall clock with a cracked faceplate and missing the hour hand. "How about this one?"

Pen turned to face her and tilted his head to one side. "That one is broken. Here, don't you want this one back?" He stooped as he spoke and plucked the victimized clock from the ground. He dusted it quickly with one hand and took a few steps towards her, holding it out. "Sorry."

"Uh, right." Sparrow looked at the broken clock. "Maybe a pocket watch?" She turned her face back at him and smiles. "You look like someone who could use a pocket watch."

Pen tried not to frown, and gently wagged the clock at her. "I could use a lot of things, lady, but a pocketwatch is something I can live without."

"But then how would you know the time?" Sprarrow dropped the clock she was holding and dug up a small brass pocket watch. "Here, how about this one?"

Pen could feel his patience running thin. He set the clock down by her and straightened himself. "How about if I help you clean up?"

Austin sat down on the ground and sighed softly, wondering where exactly he had gotten to. This was the fifth time he awoke from a slight slumber to find himself somewhere unknown. And he knew this wasn't great for him, so he stood. Brushing his black skinnys off and walking around, hopefully finding somebody that would direct him home...or at least to some place to sleep. So he saw something, a being he hadn't seen before. He grumbled and walked up to the two people. "Um..."

Pen nearly stumbled back in surprise. "Hey! You can't just ignore me like that!" He turned a glare towards Austin.

Sparrow frowned as she looked back at Pen. "And why not? Were you going to actually buy something, or just continue to make me feel bad about knocking over the stand?"

".. You knocked your own stand over?" The glare began to fade. "I thought.. Well, it serves you right. Trying to sell broken clocks to people." He crossed his arms with a huff.

"I was trying to sell fixed ones." Sparrow shook the pocket watch at him. "But I can't very well do that if they're broken, can I? And I can't very well fix them myself! So what am I to do? Hmm? Are you trying to get me fired? Are you that heartless?"

The glare was back. He put his hands on his hips for effect. "I offered to pick your mess up, didn't I? You can't make me feel bad over your dumb mistake. It isn't any of my business, anyways."

"But I tried so hard." Her eyes began to brim with tears and her lower lip trembled ever so slightly. "It is my first day. My first day and I knock over the clocks. I wanted to do so well too." She lifted one hand and used the back of her her long sleeve to wipe at the tears. "I mean, how would you feel? Do you even know what it's like?"

He let his hands drop as he listened, then reached to scratch his head as he looked around at the mess. "No, I don't suppose I've ever knocked over an entire clock display before.. " He trailed off and took on a thoughtful look. "I probably should, though."
