Been a pleasure. ( )

Postby Skogul on Mon Aug 18, 2008 7:32 pm

Just wanted to officially and regretfully inform everyone that I am hereby taking my leave of Roleplay Gateway.

My reasons are many, though a few stick out beyond the rest, and those are the ones I will share.

Firstly, I do not feel the site's slogan of “Roleplay YOUR way” entirely fits the reality I've found here. While, yes, compared to some forums, RPGateway does have a fairly hands-off attitude toward RP, and that's great, but at the same time I've noticed any idea that does not fit the unspoken status quo of the forum seems to be met with much opposition from members and staff alike, usually in a rather unprofessional, if not downright rude way. While one may be free to roleplay THEIR way, usually unless you cater to the bottom of the bell curve and create a vampire naruto high school romance RP, you're going to be ignored or scoffed at, if not indirectly insulted in some way. Perhaps the site slogan should be changed to the more fitting: “Roleplay the way EVERYONE ELSE does unless you want to be ostrasized and potentially belittled”

Second, I feel certain members of the RPGateway staff (not all, or even most, mind you... just a couple) do a poor job of representing the site in the best and most professional way possible. This is patently bad form, as the staff of a forum are the example the site is judged against, and if they act in ways ill befitting their stations, the site's reputation will suffer. Such examples of irresponsible behavior are firmly reprimanded in real world situations, such as in the workplace and within organizations; I fail to see why they would be tolerated on RPGateway. Especially when involving outright public ridicule and abuse of RPers, both new and old by, key staff members with little, if any, justification for such actions.

Lastly, I simply do not feel I am not a good fit for this site. I seem to operate outside of the general box that most of the members do and cannot fit in well enough to where I feel comfortable or even all that welcome. This is not to say I feel I am better or more advanced than other members of the site, not at all. I just do not feel like I am a good match for RPGateway in general.

That said, I am officially withdrawing from all threads on Roleplay Gateway and taking my RP to other, possibly greener pastures, where I truly am free to roleplay MY way. I may stop by now and then for idle chatter and if, sometime in the future, the issues mentioned above are somehow addressed in any kind of significant capacity, I may return... but, that seems highly unlikely, considering some of these things have been permitted to get as far as they have.

For anyone wishing to remain in contact with me, feel free to use the info below. I am very open to communication, so don't be afraid to hit me up with an IM:

While I wish you all well on your future ventures, I must say just a few short things.

This is the first time I've heard these sorts of feelings from you guys! If there is a problem, it is vital that you let me know immediately so that I can identify what the best approach is to fixing it. We can never grow to our full potential as a roleplaying community if we don't identify the issues and solve them - which means that your input and feedback as members is paramount to our growth.

As I've said many, many times previously - the members of RolePlayGateway are the most essential component - it is the members that drive the community.

Again, I'm really sorry to see you guys go, you guys have been my #1 reading material on the forums ever since you started roleplaying in the persistent world forum ("In Character"). I'd really like you to stay, but again - it's not my place to make those decisions for you.

If someone dislikes RolePlayGateway or how it works, they have two options:
1) Leave without helping resolve the issue.
2) Work with the site in actively improving upon the problem.

As much as I'd like people to participate in the second choice, there will inevitably be people who make the first choice. I'm not saying you guys are doing that at all, I'm just voicing my opinion on some of the other things that happen more frequently.

Again, thanks so much for participating this much on the site! I hope to see you guys around from time to time, and maybe you'll come back and see us on occasion. Good luck in your travels, and I hope you guys find a home that meets your needs. ^_^

I disagree with you, Skogul. I've made plenty of non-vampire naruto high school romance RP's, and they've done fine. As for the quality of the staff, I can't say. Still, if you can't find what you're looking for here, I hope you find it elsewhere. Also, I hardly think you have the right to determine the attitudes of the people, just because you feel your ideas were poorly received. It's not the rarity of the idea that counts. It's the quality. One of my ideas was flat out ignored, but did I go on a rant about how the people were "closed-minded' jerks? No. I simply tried a new idea, and it worked.

With all due respect, sir, I believe you may have missed my point.

I was speaking from a personal perspective based on what I, myself, experienced on this site and in the chatroom affiliated with it. I was not presuming to know what everyone felt or how they had been treated or not treated, so please don't assume that's what I was saying - you would be wrong.

As it says in the stickied thread in this section, I am posting my reasons for leaving and any dissatisfaction I have with the site and how it is run. It's not a personal attack on anyone, it's just how I feel given my experience. I was not seeking to become a worshipped godking for investing ideas into the forum. It had nothing to do with how "rare" my ideas were or anything of that sort. I just found it ironic there would be an open call for suggestions and then a marked resistance toward any offered.

I was, in my experience with it and how it was worked. It's a personal perspective, as I said, based on what I, myself, and no one else experienced. However, my colleagues have shared similar sentiment in regards to the site and its administration, so while I speak only for me, I do not seem to be alone in this.

Regardless, I don't see why you have invested such an interest in me sharing my thoughts as requested by Remaeus himself. I'm doing my part for the site, even as I depart from it, yet you attack me for it. I've no desire to engage in a petty flamewar with you, sir.

It's not an attack. It's just that I don't share your perspective and I'm calling out my opinion. If you're so insecure that you have to reduce my opinions to an attack, then that's your business. Cutting and running does not help anybody. If you want to help, stay and improve the site's effectiveness in keeping the members satified. You won't do that, of course, but whatever. That last line was an attack, just so you know. Anyway, I'm calling an end to what you view as a "petty flame war".

Lol, if this is your idea of offering a constructive differing viewpoint, I think you need a lesson on how to do it in a less abrasive way. Calling someone, essentially, a liar, and then insinuating that they are insecure because they don't care for the tone of your comment are hardly what I would consider benign ways to approach the situation. It's attitudes like yours that make me want to stay and contribute even less, just to let you know.

Perhaps I am "cutting and running", but frankly, I don't find it worth my time and effort to work my ass off to improve a site I do not own and have not invested in personally, especially given the opposition I've encountered thus far.

Naw, I'm out. No point to it all anymore. You can still contact me and we'll see if we can get that experimental wargame RP up, though, as I plan to get some RP oriented wargamers on that from other sources.

What -- canceled? Oh sonuvabi --

Sorry the site hasn't been working out for you guys, though I've got a lot more to see to RPG, I'll learn from the experiences you've guys shown me in the Multiverse. I know to keep my head down now. >> <<

Skogul, liked the Apocrphya thread, Eude ... well, liked the Eudemonians in general. So, hope to see you guys find another place that will bake you fresh little Azrican-Cookies and read you bed time stories at night, though I did none of that ... Just go look for new crap, alright?

As non-insulting as your good-byes were, I can't help but say that you guys did a pretty good job at bringing this upon yourselves by constantly bickering with Zhelir, not to mention countless other users about every little thing.

There was a lot of back-door trash-talking going on both sides, which also lead to this. I'm not going to lie about this one bit. I honestly think you're taking the cheap-bastard's way out, by not PMing Remaeus to fix the problem to begin with, which it seems like you didn't, judging by his rather surprised reaction to the situation.

One thing that needs to be realized here, is that chat-discussions don't always get the job done in terms of organizing RP's like this, especially when there on a forum. I read through pretty much every arguement that took place on IRC, and I can't say one bit that they were all that pretty. Perhaps creating a thread on the forums would've been the better option? I can guarantee you, the trash-talking probably would've been greatly reduced, and you also would've received far more input from the general populace.

You had the right strategy going, but you used the wrong methods, coupled with your ego's. Is this me blaming you and you alone? Nope. I blame Ryand, I blame Zhelir, I blame, Skogul, I blame Eudemonia, for not being able to compromise with one another.

Point blank, you used the right strategy but applied the wrong methods.

It's getting a little tiring what with me trying to wash my hands of this place only to get informed via email that people are replying to this thread just to try to get the last word in, even when they don't know the particulars of what exactly led up to this decision on my part. I spoke with Eric; probably could've done it sooner, but I (amongst others, and you can't argue against that since it was a common sentiment) didn't feel he would even bother to listen, much less DO something in response to it. Especially since one of the main people I had issue with was not just a veteran member or staff, but one of Eric's friends (or at least used to be, if rumors are to be believed). Had I known he would, yeah, I would have brought it up long before it got this far. Guess that was my mistake, huh? Oh well~ "Woulda-coulda-shoulda" are irrelevant now, aren't they?

HOWEVER, you can believe what you want and shit-sling all you like, guy, if it really makes you feel that much better. It doesn't really matter, does it? Eude and I are done with RPGateway and nothing we said or did as we left directly affected you at all. Let it go, move on with your life and RPs. We have.

If you have issue with the course of action Eric took, take it up with him. I had no hand in that, and it surprised me as much as anyone. If you want to continue trying to start a shitstorm with me, my contact info is listed in my original post. I'm done here and I'm requesting this thread be locked.
