"Ah, yes," Reid replied. "The nights have been quiet. It's a bit of a shock, really. Normally, someone who'd choose to travel the forest at night more than necessary - other than your dear kind and those like them, of course - earn a name from me. It's not a name I'd say to a customer's face, mind you, but that name is 'fool.'" He sighed and buried his hands in his pockets. "Lately, though, we've been having more trouble in broad daylight. There never really is a good time to traipse about these parts, is there?"
Reid had been doing this for quite a while, and his experience made him confident that the answer was no. It was a wonder his hairs hadn't yet begun to gray. With the level of stress veteran Apple fighters went through year after year, one had to wonder if there was a dye maker nearby whose pocketbook was nice and fat. Though a councilman, Reid didn't even have it the worst. Other members among both council and crew were his senior in terms of time invested.
"Ah well. Someone must-"
The sound of a shot rang out again, and this time it was even closer. It came from behind now. It was, in fact, from the direction Theo had left in. Reid's smile fell and his mouth took on a sort of wrinkle. It wasn't quite a frown. The curl of his lip was as if he had caught a whiff of an unknown scent, one which was not quite unpleasant enough to grimace at. "What can he be up to now? Is he shooting out back? I'll have to have a talk with him later. We do have a range for these things, and it really isn't far." If Reid knew the true locale of the impromptu target practice, he would have placed that talk a lot closer to the top of his schedule, but through merciful ignorance Theo was safe (for now).
Thus, Reid merely turned his attention to Jim. The demon posed a question. He wanted... a hat? More than that, he wanted a hat which would somehow clear up misunderstandings. Reid blinked once or twice. "A hat? Well, my good fellow, if you think it would help you, there is a nice hatter in Keyn..." He paused. If Jim went to town alone, he would likely be able to make his honest intentions known before anything happened. Many kinds were in the world, and many of them passed through Keyn peacefully, too. Still, those in Keyn were especially wary of anything large and intimidating coming from the forest's direction. Sometimes they were even wary of things that were tiny and adorable should said things hail from Grimloch. "I could accompany you there. If you didn't mind an old one I'd toss you one of mine, but I've a feeling we don't wear the same size."
Out of the corner of his eye, Reid noticed movement. A young woman in white and red was making her way toward the building. From this distance, Reid wasn't sure whether he recognized her or not. It became clearer to him as she moved closer that he did not. A bag was in her hand, and from this Reid guessed at two possibilities: this was a prospective customer or a prospective initiate. Her aura didn't seem like a fighter's. No, this one seemed much softer, more polished than that. She reminded Reid of a peppermint bonbon wrapped up neatly for display in a window. Still, Reid had learned better than to judge a book by its cover. He nodded to Veronica and Jim, straightened his hat and jacket, and exited the building to meet Jade.
"Greetings, miss," he said, smiling broadly at the lass and folding his hands before himself. "May I help you?"
