“I've sent a summons,” Litania replied in a hushed sort of tone, “We will wait until the hour but after that we must leave.” The quietness made Rile suspicious. He wasn’t completely sure of their safety out here in the open, but he was relatively ok with the odds. Of course, after looking around a moment he discovered yet another elf walking onto the scene. This gathering was just getting better and better! As the figure approached it exchanged a few words with Litania, and Rile forgot himself and chuckled a bit at the oddity of the situation.

After the strange and nervous elf asked if Litania had a map, Rile excused himself for a moment with a slight nod. He wasn’t about to get pulled into a conversation that might be as boring as watching a mouse eat. As Rile walked away he noticed a few people beginning to start their day, it was still quite dark out and he found it amazing on how dedicated these people were to their daily duties. Rile took a quick look around the inn looking for anyone that might be a part of Litania’s suspicious group, of which he was now a member. After finding no one he began to work his way back towards where Litania and the other, new elf were talking.

Soon, Rile approached the spot he had left not five minutes before, hoping to find the conversation over. With a sigh, he made the last turn around the inn and walked in sight of Litania, with a wave and a smile.

Viri's tail swished angrily back and forth. The elf didn't feel right; she didn't feel anything like Rile and Litania. Agitatedly, she stalked up and down through the stalks of grass before smelling the stranger's ankles.

Mud, of course, why wouldn't there be mud? The forest, moss and under-brush, a great deal of water. It was raining, after all. But... is this the scent of the sky? Her ears pinned themselves back. She didn't trust this person. If Litania ended up accepting her, then she could be tolerated, but she wasn't sure about the trust. Both her feline and human mind rebelled against her, hid from her.

Pointedly, Viridis wound around Litania's legs, giving a raspy, exasperated meow. Bunching up her legs, she vaulted the huge height to Reno's back, glaring at the new-comer. Cats were quite adept at the art; they had a third eyelid that could moisturize the eye, allowing them to keep an unblinking glare longer than humans could. If too much time passes, perhaps we could be off; Litania must keep her pursuers in mind. I hope. This other elf-- no, this non-elf, she looks like she knows too much; have I read about this before?

The dark elf excused himself with a nod, and vanished. The cat’s tail swished back and forth, then it came and sniffed her ankles. Talaris jerked backwards and almost tripped in an effort to get away from the cat without stepping on her.

The cat slid around the female elf’s feet, meowing. Then, she jumped up onto the black stallion’s back and continued to glare at her. Talaris swallowed and looked away. She knew from her experience as a cat that a) the feline in front of her knew that she wasn’t what she seemed to be and b) the cat could outstare her.

Talaris hoped that the cat didn’t have any form of communication with the elf. Well… enough communication to convey that she wasn’t an elf. Talaris remembered one of the villages she had first visited when she came here to Earth. When the people had found out that she was a shifter, they had almost succeeded in killing her. With a shudder, she refocused on a point above the elf’s shoulder.

Now, as he sat on his bedroll looking over his own body, he cringed. Apparently the stinging feeling had come from some strange creatures or spores, for now he was covered in itching red bumps. He redressed himself, ate some jerky from his pack, and picked up his stuff, scratching himself the whole time.

His bedding and food slung over his shoulder, he continued onward towards the village. The itchy mage was relieved to find that this did not take long (one-and-a-half hours at the most).

The settlement was a welcome sight. He stood on a hill overlooking the place, and felt a deep sense of--something? This valley, this land of his ancestors, felt extremely familiar and comfortable. Perhaps he was feeling the effects of some buried ancestral memory. So overwhelmed by the lovely cottages and streets below him, he did not notice the humanoids talking nearby for several minutes.

When he did, he realized that they were speaking Elvish. The majority of the Lamanos monks had been elves, so this was a language he was quite familar with. One of them, who appeared to be a young elfmaid, was asking for a map.

"Ah, good day!" he called out to them in Elvish, "I have need of directions, too. Or at the very least, what is the name of this village?"

Litania barely moved as Rile left, wandering around the area before returning, and her gaze stayed fixed firmly upon the newcomer. The elvish was good enough but it was an old tongue and had no accent that she recognised, arousing a small amount of suspicion in the elven scholar and warrior. The cat seemed not to like her, sweeping agitatedly about Litania's feet before springing gracefully onto Reno's back. And yet the woman had done no harm and showed no threat...

"I do not have a map..." Litania began in her birth-tongue but was suddenly interrrupted, a male voice calling out into the dim light. Startled, she drew her sword with ease, cursing herself for not being vigilant during her conversation with the new elf. She kept the sword point low as the words bore no unfriendliness and yet her cerulean gaze flicked between the two seeming elves.

"My tolerance wavers," Litania spoke in a soft voice, the tone unthreatening and yet blunt, "And my suspicion heightens when not one but two people seem lost on the same night. I am Litania of Ioas. Name yourselves and my suspicion will ease. Keep your silence and I will take it as a threat."

Not used to being threatened by sapient beings, Mr. Indavida blinked and bit his lower lip. "Of course," he concented, "I am Rin Indavida, a Wind-Mage and monk. I hail from the Quin Shaliha monostary on Lamanos VII"

He held his breath, silently praying that he had not said anything stupid.

Litania relaxed slightly, though she kept a wary eye on the woman who had yet to speak.

"Lamanos IV," she confirmed with a nod of her head, "A strange place for a wind-mage but there seems to be no lie tainting your words and therefore I must assume your reasons are genuine. I apologise for my hasty... greeting; enemies lurk where you least want them and I am already wary this morning."

Glancing up at the lightening sky, Litania frowned beneath her deep hood and then lowered her gaze once more, her cloak swirling about her booted feet as she turned to the female elf.

"I do not know what you are," she said slowly in the Earthen tongue, somehow sensing that elvish was not native to the woman, and her pale hands sheathed her sword smoothly back into its place over her shoulder, "But presently I do not have the time or the patience to allay my suspicions about who - or what - you are. I am persued by those who take little rest and thus must leave imminently."

Litania sighed, patting Reno's muzzle, and he shifted, whickering. "You may join me," she told the two elves against her better judgement, her blue eyes piercing the gaze of each from within her hood's dark folds, "But do not expect anything to be easy. I intend to travel back to Iaos with my companions: the fire-elf Rile who stands at my side, a young Earthen girl named Alicen, and her canine, Mimi. The cat also seems to want to join us and I have found she is as an intelligent and companionable friend as the two humanoids. A dragoon may follow also but his thoughts are at present his own and I have no guarentee he will truly join us."

The stars were disappearing already and Litania's concerned gaze flicked twards the heavens once more.

"I need to find a ship of some kind," she mused, half to herself and half in question to the newcomers, "The size or shape does not matter as long as it fits us as I can power it none-the-less. Especially," she added, returning her gaze to the wind-mage, "If you will grant me your assistance."

She was weary of mantaining the struggle between cat and woman. The magic she'd attempted to summon, as well as a rather small amount of sleep, had decreased her strength. Viridis didn't want the non-elf to come, a paranoia heightened by the fact that she didn't smell elvish, nor could she remember what she'd read about such people. Mr.Indavida... he could be checked out later. There was time...

Wind rustled through the grass, carrying the odors of the night on its fast wings. The cat's tail twitched, though she was careful not to spook the great, snorting creature beneath her. Her feline mind whispered a lack of safety... the elf-woman was safe. Glowering at the strange creature who wore a similar guise, the cat padded regally onto the woman's shoulder, assuming her seat there with all the stature of the goddess Bastet.

The woman...Litania, a faint memory whispered...Litania spoke to the forest-stranger, the male one. His body denoted strength, though the air around him hummed to a song existing around only him, as well as fire-elf and non-elf. Forest-stranger responded to Litania. Despite her apparent ease, the cat was uncomfortable with so many unknown beings, perhaps because the same guarded caution was shown by the woman she perched on...

"I do not have a map..." the elf began, just as a male called out to her. In a heartbeat, she had drawn her sword and her gaze wandered between her and the new comer. Then, in a calm voice, she said, "My tolerance wavers, and my suspicion heightens when not one but two people seem lost on the same night. I am Litania of Ioas. Name yourselves and my suspicion will ease. Keep your silence and I will take it as a threat."

Talaris swallowed and eyed the sword nervously. All she had wanted was some indication that she hadn’t left the planet entirely, and now she had a woman with a sword that viewed her as a threat. The man claimed that he was from Lamanos IV, and the elfish woman glanced at her briefly, probably waiting for her to speak.

Then, she said, "I do not know what you are," in the Earthen language, as Talaris nearly sighed in relief, "But presently I do not have the time or the patience to allay my suspicions about who - or what - you are. I am persued by those who take little rest and thus must leave imminently. You may join me, but do not expect anything to be easy.

Talaris licked her lips and quietly said, “I am known as Talaris Aquilifer. I am from the planet of Rhedai. I am not from a family of great importance,” [i]save my father’s side
, she thought, “and neither am I from an important city. Um… if it wouldn’t be a burden to you or your companions, I would… like to join you, even though I doubt that any skills I may possess would be of any aid to you.”

Rile approached the lot of elves, and of course a horse and cat, and was surprised to find yet another unexplained person standing with Litania. ‘Perhaps it would have been better if I hadn’t left for a little stroll…’ The situation was becoming quite strange indeed, and with your daily oddities come your daily dangers, of course. At least, that was what Rile had learned from his experiences. The first thing Rile heard as he got close enough to hear the muffled conversation was the last thing he had on his mind. Apparently the two new elves were going to be joining up with Litania as well! It seemed as if she was recruiting an army of some sort. The smile quickly fading into an expressionless face, Rile stopped beside Litania as one of the Elves revealed her identity.

Talaris Aquilifer was the name, apparently from Rhedai. The planet Rile wasn’t so sure about, though he had heard many similar names in the past. As the wind began to pick up speed Rile looked around to make sure nothing important was flying off into the distance. The last thing he looked at was the cat, resting lightly on Litania’s shoulder. Rile’s eyes rested upon it and sought a reassuring comfort that, that species of animal usually brought to him. Instead he received a little pang of rejection from the feline’s body. A strange thing, though it could be on account of the cat’s posture… it was sitting as if it owned the world. Rile chuckled at the thought of a cat being master of all and turn back around at last looking at the one known as Talaris once again.

Next to Talaris was another elf, the one that appeared first, ‘The one that I abandoned for Litania to deal with.’ He smiled towards the elf in as friendly a way as possible. “So, shall we be off? Or are we going to wait a bit more for others that have yet to join us?” As he said this he remembered Runaway, his horse! He had meant to go get him when they left, but it was taking longer than expected… Rile hoped that Runaway hadn’t gotten loose! He noticed the flimsy smile fading from his face and quickly reformed it, looking at no one in particular after just turning to speak to Litania.

((Forgive me - I'm going to borrow Alicen for a moment...))

Litania's face lit up at the woman's word's, an understanding smile breaking across her tattooed features.

"A Shifter," she breathed, stroking the cat upon her shoulder absently, "Forgive me: I have not come upon one of your kind before, though I have learnt of your species. Still, our chatter must wait. As Rile quite rightly points out, we should not linger any more..."

As Litania spoke, there was another movement in the shadows, and suddenly the young girl Alicen burst out from the direction of the inn, the smaller terrier trotting quietly at her heels. She leaned against her knees as she arrived, her breath short.

"I thought you were in trouble!" the girl gasped, straightening with a worried look, "I aw you in my mind - calling me - and I thought you were in trouble so I ran..."

Her gaze swept the small group, her voice petering out at the sight of the strangers, but Litania smiled reassuringly.

"Rin and Talaris will be joining us," she told Alicen, moving to adjust Reno's saddle ready to ride, the cat swaying easily upon her shoulders, "And now we have everyone - we must leave."

Litania rose gracefully onto Reno's sturdy back, her tall shadow towering above everyone in the dim morning light. Holding out a hand, she grasped Alicen's hand as she scooped Mimi into her fee arm, hauling the two into the saddle behind her.

"Oh, wait!" the girl called, placing a hand on the elf's shoulder as she went to turn, "I saw a horse grazing behind the inn - he had tack on still - and I wondered if it was one of ours?"

Rile blinked as Litania acknowledged their departure, surprised that they would be leaving without the last of Litania’s… friends. Suddenly there was a grand commotion, Litania moved to speak to someone behind Rile. He spun on his heels to look at the person. As his vision focused on the two and as they started to speak Rile noticed a certain tone in both of their voices, as if they knew each other. Then it suddenly hit him, of course! That was the last of Litania’s companions… he hoped.

Now they were ready, Litania mounted her horse and gathered some of the others behind her. Thinking of his horse, Rile made a quick move to gather his things and approached Litania to tell her of his beloved beast. Runaway was still tied up after all; not a particularly comfortable thing for a horse, especially not one as keen on movement as Runaway. Before Rile could get to Litania, one of the girls in the group called out, “Oh wait! I saw a horse grazing behind the inn - he had tack on still - and I wondered if it was one of ours?” Rile sighed as he realized he had been found out.

Embarrassed and relieved he replied to the girl, “Ummm, yes. Sorry, it is mine. I was planning on getting it as we left. If you don’t mind I’m going to pick him up, I’ll meet up with you guys. It shouldn’t take me long, as you said he still has his tack on.” As he rambled Rile moved around towards where Runaway was, slowly moving out of earshot. Once he got to Runaway he quickly pet the horse a few times, untied him and mounted him. Runaway snorted and then proceeded to move forwards back towards Litania, it didn’t take long to get back.

Mr. Indavida was confused now, and looked among the gathering party with wild glances. "What are you running from?" he asked in Elvish, "I would offer my vessel, but it could only hold two or three people at most."

The cat was well and thoroughly confused. The smell of fire and ash on the air bespoke the approach of fire-elf, but she felt torn in two. A weak side screamed friend!, another side cautioned, fire kills forests, avoid fire. So she compromised by ignoring him entirely.

Strange sounds were exchanged, a series of long and sharp syllables that evaded comprehension, except for certain select words. Shifter, Rile, horse, wait... it made no sense. Now the dog and his Girl were with them, and the dog's Girl was chattering fast. Fire-elf made a sound in response and left. Why did he leave?

Litania's shoulder made the cat sway on her perch as the elf mounted the snorting beast-- it was all wrong! She'd climbed off of that creature to be safe, and now they were back on! "Meeeoow," she said plaintively, to no response. "Meow?" Agitation fought with her dignity; she didn't desire to have these strangers consider her less powerful, nor did she want to be on the beast-- particularly as the dog's Girl sat behind her, with the dog.

Wait...now fire-elf was back! With... was that another snorting thing? Now forest-man was saying something that interested everyone, and non-elf was coming with them. Crouching low on the only being she was sure of-- Litania-- the cat prepared for a long night.

”A Shifter,” The elfin woman said, smiling. Talaris felt a lot of her unease drop away at that smile. These people wouldn’t hurt her after all. "Forgive me: I have not come upon one of your kind before, though I have learnt of your species. Still, our chatter must wait. As Rile quite rightly points out, we should not linger any more..."

Talaris bowed slightly. The Pennihecate weren’t known for travelling very far, and when they did, they rarely travelled in their true forms. The second part of what Litania said interested her, though. What are they running from? Did I make a mistake by asking to accompany them?

Her thoughts were broken when a human female came running, with a small dog following close behind her.

After Litania reassred the girl, she mounted the black stallion that had stood patiently throughout the conversation. Reaching out, she grabbed the girl and her dog, pulling them up into the saddle. "Oh, wait!" the human female said, "I saw a horse grazing behind the inn - he had tack on still - and I wondered if it was one of ours?"

Here the fire elf briefly excused himself to go fetch what was presumably his horse. He wasn’t gone long, but while he was gone, Talaris reached out a palm towards the cat. If she sniffed her palm, maybe she would decide that Talaris wasn’t a threat after all. For if the cat perceived her as a friend, Talaris would feel a lot more comfortable.

She desperately wanted to ask why they were travelling with a cat mage, but since everyone else seemed to take it as a natural thing, she kept her mouth shut. Maybe later she could shift into a cat form and as the feline herself.

Non-elf extended a palm to her. The cat's ears flattened almost immediately in response, and she tighten her grip on Litania's shoulder with a low hiss. The air distorted around the palm, just as it did around all the others, save for the dog and his Girl, as well as forest-man, around whom the air danced in joy. She was full of misgivings about a person who did that sort of thing to air-- forcing it out of its way, taking the air's freedom to shove it away from the body of the person. Even Litania had the same unmistakable feature, though it wasn't as pronounced. The cat wouldn't give in to non-elf.

The cat’s ears flattened as her hand extended towards her, and Talaris jerked her hand back. The cat hissed, and Talaris resisted the urge to respond in kind. It would be rather hard to respond exactly as the cat had done while she was in an elfin body, and her new traveling companions might think that she was strange if she tried.

So… she thought to herself, the cat has magic, but it doesn’t seem to understand much, nor does it seem to respond in a human way. Looking closely at the cat's magic again, she thought, And she isn’t a shapeshifter. Did a dying mage accidentally give their powers to her?

Talaris sighed, taking a step or two backwards, just to be on the safe side. I can shift and ask her tonight at the latest, when all the others are asleep. she thought, even though it brought her no consolation. And she didn't want to shift in front of so many people unless there was a pressing need for her to do so. Tonight it is. she thought.

Rile murmured something about the horse, blushing slightly in embarrassment, and Litania smiled again, nodding as he left to retrieve his mount. The cat meowed plaintaively - seemingly agitated at their movement onto Reno's back - and she raised a hand, scratching the cat behind the ears to comfort the small creature. The Wind-Mage Rin turned to her, confusion and concern pasted upon his brow and his words holding an urgent tone as he spoke in elvish.

"My planet Ioas has been almost completely destroyed by the Kandra from K'Tar," she explained quickly in elvish, Reno shifting slightly beneath her, "I have come to Earth to find aid and a small group of Kandra are persuing me in the hope to put a stop to my plans. Your help would be much appreciated - even a ship of small size would be useful - but I will not find insult if you decide not to join us."

Rile returned with his steed and Litania indicated the mount with a tilt of her head. "I should be able to manipulate my magic around Rile's steed so that it can travel through the heavens as securely as Reno," she said in explanation, speaking in the common tongue, "And Alicen will ride with me so the only passengers that will need a ship are Talaris and the dragoon if he decides to follow."

Speaking of Talaris... the Pennihecate shifter stepped forward, holding her hand out tentatively to the feline crouched low upon Litania's shoulder. But instead of the welcoming response the cat had shown previously, it drew its ears back against its head and hissed in warning, claws digging tightly into Litania's flesh in obvious unease. Talaris snatched her hand back instantly, a similar unease reflected in her eyes, and Litania raised her hand back up to the cat, rubbing a finger under it's chin.

"Nesta...nesta..." she soothed, switching back to her native tongue, "Ssshh, little friend. These people won't harm you."
