Carriers - IC
"Sometimes choosing life is just a more painful form of death."
OOC

The needle was dipping dangerously low. A wary eye was cast over it, practically fixated on it as it continued to slip slowly. They didn't have much longer. It was either get to a town, find some gas, or..walk. Yeah right, walk. Conner McCormick hated that idea. It wasn't so much that it was work, that it was hot outside, or that they would have to carry the empty gas cans plus the several gallons of bleach they carried everywhere. No, that wasn't it at all. It was the mere idea of stepping outside into unclean air, into the very heart of the disease with nothing more than a flimsy paper mask to protect himself. Yeah, that sounded like complete bullshit.

They sped past a small green sign that no doubt told them where the nearest town was, but Connor didn't see it. They were going to fast for him to even register it. If there was one thing that he actually liked about all this 'apocalypse' junk, it was the fact he could drive however he wanted. And he took advantage of that. He let his eyes drift over to the two passengers he had with him, two girls he had been traveling with for some time. Sometimes he didn't know why he traveled with them, when it would be so much easier by himself. He wouldn't have to worry about getting attached to them..but there it was. He was attached to them, at least a little. They were like his family now, his apocalypse family. The only family that hadn't been lost to some twisted disease.

"Dammit Zoe." Connor said, reaching a hand out to her to give her shoulder a playful shove. "You're supposed to be looking for signs." He said, letting a grin cross his face briefly before it fell away again into a serious expression once he caught sight of the gas gauge again. So much for trying to lighten the mood huh?

He didn't say anything else, focusing on the road once more, every now and then passing an abandoned car in the middle of the road, their doors thrown open haphazardly. It wasn't even worth it to stop and see if any of those cars had fuel...they didn't. So he kept driving without even so much of a second glance at them.

Then it came into view. The small scattering of buildings clustered together that signaled a tiny town in the middle of nowhere. It was perfect. Maybe today wasn't their day to die after all. "Holy shit, check it out." Connor said excitedly, nodding in the direction of the buildings growing closer. "We're in luck ladies. About time.." He added, forcing the gas pedal down harder once more, forcing the black beat-up SUV they were driving to go even faster somehow.

Zoe ignored the way that needle threateningly bobbed near that big, terrifying E. Driving was the only thing that kept them ahead in the race against the disease. They never stayed in any one place for too long knowing lingering would only lead to trouble. Yes, she was supposed to be paying attention and watching for signs but her focus was drifting, her mind sifting through memories of before and all the people she knew were destined to be nothing more than soil.

"I'm sorry!" She rolled her eyes back at him and shook her hair from her face, gazing back out the window and then back to low E again. She was snapped back into the moment, the images and faces dissolving as her eyes focused on the road ahead, frantically searching for their next stop. we have to be near something...

And there it was! Zoe bounced on the edge of her seat, her worried expression returning to a familiar smile and and she patted Conner on the shoulder in excitement. "Just in time! We always seem to land right where we need to be the very last minute, eh?" Removing the buckle at her waist (Because even now she felt it very important to remain buckled in!) she knelt to the foot of her seat and began gathering her container of bleach, her mask, and the wipes. "Here we go! There's gotta be something here, so we're gonna have to make this a quick sweep. In and out."

Zoe always got an adrenaline rush every time they found somewhere new to explore, it was all they had to look forward to, even if it was just survival...

Murphy wasn't sure how long she'd been on the road, but honestly she couldn't even remember what day it was. Not anymore. There was a time and a place when she remembered the exact day, hour, and minute her world went to hell, but those days were over. But feeling the wind through her hair as she raced along the abandoned back roads in the middle of nowhere on a worn down motorcycle that had seen better days was a welcome sensation that droned out the dull pang of emptiness.

But she heard that familiar drone as she felt her speed reduce dramatically. Glancing down, she saw the needle was all the way on E. Cursing to herself, she came to a stop and stepped off the bike, giving it a small kick in annoyance which forced it to topple over. Sighing, she took off her sunglasses and ran her fingers through her disheveled red hair. Murphy wore simple faded jeans with army boots, with a white tank top under a red leather vest. A holster kept two 9mm strapped to her side, and her belt was filled with bullets. She wore fingerless gloves...and a wedding band.

Taking off her heavy pack, she took a moment to light a cigarette. If there's one thing she couldn't do without, it was a cigarette. Danny used to tell her to quit, but it helped keep her nerves in the service. Strapped to her pack was a dissembled sniper rifle, her favorite 9M to be precise.

Glancing back down the dreary direction she just came from, Murphy took another second to consider her options before picking her pack back up and continuing forward. This wasn't the first ride she hotwired only to have it die on her, and it wouldn't be the last.

Taking the occasional drag from her light, Murphy walked onward for what seemed like hours. She didn't mind walking for days on end. In the military, she'd go on missions requiring her to run for miles on end. These days weren't so different. Suddenly, in the distance, she saw what appeared to be buildings on the horizon. She smiled to herself.

"Looks like I might get a new ride after all," she said to herself.

Eli was running a mile from the roads. Eli couldn't stand the roads its where most of the people where, people with guns that he didn't want to waste the ammo killing. So he walked with the road just barely insight but never on it. Most passers by wouldn't even see him as far out as he was. The goal wasn't to avoid it was to make sure that if anything happened he could put a round or three in any man, woman or child that needed it.

Eli stopped running and went to a walk before stopping, resting his hands upon his knees. His faded jeans were heavy, the boots he were had weigh at lest twenty pounds by now. Whats worse was shirt so filled with sweat he was sure it was to slide off his back. The pack on his pack was starting to get heavy. It made him wonder why he carried so much equipment with him. "There has to be something around here. I swear I been walking for at lest a week now." Eli thought to himself.

After resting for a few minutes, he grabbed his ruck sack, his Remington M24 tucked into the back of the bag, by the top handle and started walking again. It wasn't long before he saw a few buildings on the horizon. He cracked a smile for the first time in God only knows when. With any luck a few decent people and some new clothes would be waiting for him. Hell if he was really lucky he wouldn't even have shoot, stab or mane anyone. A full stomach and warm bed is was the best anyone could ask for in this world.

With the town in sight he slung the sack over his shoulders and started running again. Bellowing out jodies as he ran towards the town. If anything were to hear him it would mean one of two things. Either they were going to run or he was going to put two in head of whatever came after him.

((Sorry I used the wrong account. This is wokka.))

The clock hummed on with it's rhythmic ticking. The seconds hand bounced back and forth between the two dashes marking thiry-nine and forty as it had done for the past several hours.

"SHUT UP!" Screamed Craig, followed by the smashing of the clock which had fallen after receiving a rather vicious blow from a flying tin.

He'd found the small town a few days earlier and upon finding it decided to take refuge in the back of the local store. The back room had been broken open well before he'd arrived and most of the stuff had been cleared out, still he'd managed to find a couple of unopened boxes. One filled with tins of baked beans and the other full of cans of coke. Touching the stuff up front that wasn't at least in some form of a wrapper was likely deadly.

"I've really gotta find some sorta transport. Maybe a bicycle." Craig muttered, slinking up behind the counter and pulling down an unopened pack of Marlboro cigarettes with his handkerchief alongside a small zippo. Lighting up rather quickly he puffed out small bursts of smoke one after the other.

"I should really use up these supplies..." It wasn't really so surprising that Craig often talked to himself. He had had little to no form of contact with other people since the infection hit.

His backpack sat in the back room filled to the brim with tins of beans, cans of coke, and any kind of drink or edible tinned food he could scavenge. Upon it was a precariously balanced woodcutters' axe which was quickly swept up and slung through the back of Craig's belt.

"One more day and then we're off." By rule of thumb he would never stay in one place for more than a week at most. In fact by rule of thumb he rarely rested anywhere for more than a few hours.

With a tap of the pocket knife that was eternally attached to his shirt sleeve Craig vacated the shop to pace around in the shadows of the town, best if he didn't set off the alarm when there could be people, infected people, anywhere. He quickly begun prowling around in the shadows of the town, letting off the occasional puff of smoke. If he wasn't going to set off the alarm he sure as hell wasn't going to make it easy for anyone to spot him.

The heat of the New Mexico sun beamed down unmercifully as Scarlett and Violet Valentine made their way down the long abandoned road in a desperate search for any signs of life. They couldn't even begin to tell you the last time they had come across any sort of human being....diseased or not. It seemed to have been ages ago. They had both begin to fear that perhaps there was no one left, that the disease had run it's course and left them alone.

Pulling her bright yellow backpack from her shoulders, Violet dropped it loudly onto the ground before throwing up her hands up in frustration, " This is bull Scarlett! We have bee walking for hours. There is nothing around." Seating herself onto of her bag, Violet placed her hands under her chin and glanced to her sister "Scarlett, you need to rest. It's not going to kill you ya know..." Scarlett placed a hand on her younger sister shoulders and smiled "I know Violet, I just wanna find someplace safe for the night. We won't walk much further I promise. Just a little more okay?" Watching attentively as Violet dragged her self from the ground, Scarlett handed her a watter bottle from her own bag. Ever since the disease first reared it's angry head to them, Scarlett had done her best to keep herself and Violet safe. They had come a long way and had lost many friends, but they had survived and would continue to do so...they had to...

It wans't for another hour or so of walking that a large building came into view. It looked pretty worn down and abandoned, with the exception of a vehicle parked out front. The sisters glance momentarily towards each other before pulling out small hand guns. Placing their bags quietly behind some lone bushes, Violet creeped around the side of the building while her sister walking towards the front, both prying whoever laid inside was uncontaminated and hopefully not easily startled.

Connor pulled his foot from the gas pedal, allowing the car to slow to an acceptable speed as they drifted into the town. Zoey was already gathering her things to leave, and he gave her a little scowl. She was always too excited to come to a new place, to ready to jump up and go on an expedition of sorts.

But at least she knew what she was doing. It wasn't like Connor had to worry about her, but he did anyway. He pulled the car into an abandoned gas station, the door to the building hanging open and leaving the place exposed. Chances of there being gas here were slim, but it was always worth a try. "Follow the rules." He told Zoey and Jay, glancing at her in the rear view mirror for a moment. He then reached around his neck and pulled on the flimsy paper mask he kept there, covering his mouth in preparation to step into the potentially contaminated air.

Then he opened the door to the car slowly, stepping out carefully. Connor allowed himself to stretch, walking stiffly to the hood of the car and leaning against it momentarily. He hadn't yet felt the need to pull out his gun, not seeing any living person immediately. That was good. The less people you encountered, the better, and the chance of survival rose just a bit. Taking another moment, Connor reached into his pocket and pulled out a pair of latex gloves that he always kept there and carefully pulled them on, one delicate finger at a time. "Come on, let's see what we've got." He said out loud, giving the hood of the car a hard smack before he pushed off it and crossed to the worn gas pump.

Jonathan Carolla had watched a pair of girls, who looked eerily alike, walk up the dirty, long unused I-25 north into the former town of Las Vegas, New Mexico. He'd scouted it out for a few days, also having taken note to visit the sites and enjoy the landmarks that he recognized from the 1984 classic Red Dawn, which was filmed in the town. He hadn't found much; a fire had destroyed a lot of the infrastructure up north, but it had died either by the work of committed inhabitants or lucky nature before it could reduce the innards to ash.

Fortunately, the town had been evacuated early on due to the rapid spread of the virus, reportedly starting in the west coast and moving east with the wind. There had been plenty of goodies left behind by the townsfolk when the army forced them out, but the truly parasitic effects came from the refugees that passed through, notably the ones that were sick and used up more than they were worth. There wasn't enough left to sustain a large group for a prolonged period of time, but John had taken enough to get himself by until he reached Oklahoma again. Either way, there was just enough for those that had the energy to seek out what was left.

John was able to predict the path that the girls, who were bickering like siblings, were gonna take on their way into town; the last few had come up on a direct path toward a big building with a car that looked like it had been recently driven. It was some kind of office building, as best as he could figure; it had large, retro lettering on the front that indicated it was probably an older building from the early 20th century, and had served as some kind of local warehouse for a long time before being converted into offices. Regardless, it had been picked clean by sick scavengers seeking to use the furniture inside as firewood in their final hours; as a result, it was filled with bodies wrapped up in blankets and sleeping bags in their futile attempts to battle the cold no one had shaken.

He waited for the girls on the hood of a car 20 yards away from the building and on the opposite end of the street, effectively keeping him out of their eyeshot. Between his legs, he was carving away at the old metal, roughly scribing his name and what he was pretty sure was the date into the sheet of steel to pass the time as he continued to observe them. He was hoping that they would smell the stench of the bodies and walk away; the last few hadn't and became infected due to his inability to reach them in time to warn them. He hadn't even thought of putting notes on the door up until the point when the girls raised handguns to the door as they prepared to enter. He made sure to have his shotgun in reaching range; if they wanted to get in a firefight with him, he was gonna be able to raise it and fire it effectively. He was avoiding having it in his arms or on its sling since a deaf man came through and didn't understand what was happening, and John had been forced to shoot him down. John wanted to make his introduction as friendly as possible, which was especially difficult in these circumstances.

"Ya don't wanna go in there, kids. Ain't nothin but moldy goods and stinky bones," He shouted between the gap, still focused on engraving his name, the most eternal part of his existence, into something that probably wouldn't matter anyway.

Eli's shoulder hit the wall of the first building he came to. He was breathing heavily, he was worse off than he thought. It was hard running all day no matter how good of shape your in. Pulling the gun from his leg holster he ejected the magazine. Nine shoot plus one in the chamber, ten shoots altogether. Adding the the one full clip he had, Eli thought he was armed well for an ecounter with five to seven men.

Replacing the magazine Eli crept to edge of building. Peering around the edge of builing, Eli felt a surge of adrenaline and fear. The same that came when entering a build or a.combat zone.for the first time. He saw nothing but the dust blowing. It was a slight relief but that didn't mean he was off the hook just that nobody heard I'm.

Eli went back around the corner and pulled out his mask. He had at one point a respirator but bad luck and good timing took that away from him. After he out his mask on and dew out his combat knife and inspected it fold it as a woman would with the blade facing down. Ready for a quick stab or even a backhanded stab to the throat or face.

With the mask on, knife in in this left hand and his FM Five-Seven in his right. He was ready for most anything...... Or at lest he felt like it. Eli turned the corner with his gun at the ready. His mind ran a thousand miles an hour, running through situation after situation, possibilities after possibilities. Yet his movements were small, short and methodical. Taking every moment he could to rest up while never stopping. It was fun for him, its why he loved being a Ranger.

He was ready to set out and explore the new found city in front of him.

Arriving on the outskirts of the town, Murphy was hardly sure there would be much to scavenge. It was small, to say the least. But somehow it made her feel somewhat nostalgic…the few buildings that stood was reminiscent to the very ones that stood in a similar town so far away. She grew up in the provincial municipality she was raised in what seemed like an age ago.

The buildings weren’t archaic but they were hardly up to date in the modern times before the collapse of society. Regardless, she found the old buildings comforting. Murphy had already another cigarette lit and between her lips before even crossing city limits. What the hell could nicotine do to her by now that the virus hadn’t? It had already stripped her of everything that mattered. Lung cancer was hardly her concern.

Once she had passed what she surmised as the town’s conventional entrance, Murphy took a momentary break near a payphone. Her drag had long since died out and she had tossed it aside in the gutter. With a heavy sigh, she pulled out a small flask from her vest. It was silver, with the emblem of the marine corp. imprinted on its surface. With a heavy sigh, she took a quick swig. Straight faced, she placed the container back from wince it came. The sting of Tennessee whisky burned within her core, but she had grown rather accustomed to it. She was southern, born and bred…but that wasn’t the case. She came from a long line of “functioning” alcoholics…but that was before the virus outbreak. Since then, Murphy tried her best to decline in her personal pleasure in hopes of survival from the virus. At this point, though, she wondered if it would really matter.

From her momentary break, Murphy took another break near the town’s auto shop, though this time, it was her intention to gain some recon before continuing on. Perhaps there would be potential vehicles to hotwire and gas up before continuing.

Eli turned the corner around a building. He saw a lady standing out by the auto parts store. Friend or foe Eli didn't know. He could fire off a shot and see how she reacted. No matter what happened between the two he had the upper. The real question was, was she alone? If not then it was almost a given he was going to catch at lest one round.

Eli darted across the street as fast and quietly as he could. With the same quickness Eli made his way to rear of the building and down the back ally. He was hoping to get to her before she went to another location. Speed was the name of the game now. If she was friendly they might be able to travel a while, if not, well then hopefully she'd be worth the round he was going to spend putting in her head.

When Eli came to the far end of the auto parts store he started to creep along the wall of the build silently. He was close enough now to be heard. That at the lest was dangerous, at worst it was a death note. When he came to the end of the building he poked his head out for a second, just long enough to get an idea of where she was. He paused for a second at getting back behind the cover of the wall. Just long enough to catch his breath.A few sounds later he popped back out with his handgun and knife at the ready.

"Hello there Red, fine weather we're having today." Eli said with a gun pointed at her chest.

Continuing across the street towards the auto shop, Murphy was quiet while taking another quick drag. Despite not having her weapon drawn, her awareness was on high alert. Lonely little towns like these were much more ideal for ambushes. Though who would be left in this world to ambush her, she couldn't fathom. Still, the hair on the back of her neck stood up. She wasn't sure exactly, yet her instincts told her she wasn't alone.

This realization didn't really phase her, at least not in any expression or movement. Murphy continued along, walking as casually as possible to not give off any warning signs. Who would be out this far in such a desolate place was beyond her.

Approaching the auto shop, her eyes spotted the usual scene of junk-yard valued vehicles. That was the usual case in most towns and cities. Then again, she doubted a place like this would even have enough gas left to spare. Flicking her cigarette to the side, she heard the subtle sound of footsteps. They were quiet, but the steps weren’t timid. They were trained. She should know….she was trained as well.

She was standing at the near the entranceway of the alley, looking around at the parts casually to see if there was anything to salvage in this heap. Her right hand went to her sidearm, and she whirled around the same time she heard the stranger speak.

"Hello there Red, fine weather we're having today." Eli said with a gun pointed at her chest.

She smirked, her own gun aimed at his head, "I know the world ended and all but....stalking is still illegal in polite society."

"Red, we have two people with guns pointed at each other. I think we might be a tad bit past polite society, what about you?" Eli started looking her over. She was attractive, even on a bad day. What's more, she was good, not in a way that someone at a bar would say. But in a trained military way. Hell it was even hard to get over on most military men and women left. She had to be highly trained to say the lest.

"I just got into town so I don't know who else is around but I doubt they'll be all that nice. If you don't mind I would like to end this without any bloodshed or shots fired. I'm Eli and you are?" Eli said with a motion if you lower your weapon, I'll lower mine.

Murphy smirked softly at his comment. "I suppose that's true enough. But still it ain't a nice way to treat a gal, now is it?"

He said his name was Eli.He wasn't too bad of a looker, a pretty fit. But one had to keep in shape to survive. When he motioned for her to lower their guns, she did the mature thing a placed it back in the holster.

"Murphy," she said simply. She stopped using her first name a long time ago. Besides, what did it matter?

"So, what brings a hot shot ranger to a little cozy town like this?" She asked. She knew a ranger just by looking at one. She leaned against the hood of a broken down 1978 impala and looked at Eli.

Eli lowered his gun but didn't holster, he did however put away the knife.

"I heard red headed Marines were stock around here. Know where I might find an attractive one?" Eli said with a smile.

"I'm running low on food and water like most people. I lost the car about ten or more miles back. Set out on foot and boom here I am. Force Recon, right?" Eli started to scan around the area. Hopefully there was at lest a snake or something around here.

Murphy took note that he didn't holster his firearm but she didn't hold it against him. He had every right to be suspicious of everything.

His little remark referring to her hair color made her roll her eyes, "You show me where a cute ranger is, I might let ya know."

Eli then explained why he was in this area. Murphy nodded, understanding because its the same reason she was here.

"I've been over the most updated topography charts," she said, removing her backpack and setting it down on the hood. From one of many side pockets she pulled a worn, folded piece of paper. Unfolding it, she laid it out on the hood. She pointed her finger to a spot, "This is where we are."

She pointed to another spot, "That lake is the closest source of fresh water within 100 miles. It's a bit of a hike, but that's the best place to get.a decent meal. Fish, deer, smaller rodents, you name it."

Looking up from the paper, a loose strand of red hair in her face, she said, "If you're looking to restock, that's your best bet."

"Have you been through anything in this town yet? I doubt it but there might something useful around here." Eli said holstering his weapon. He moved closer taking a good look at the map, watching her fingers to take in everything he could.

"That's not as far as I thought something like would be. What about you? What brings you to these lovely lands? Sun and sea? Or maybe the rolling green hills?" Justin said never looking up from the map.

"I don't know about you but I've been running most all day. I'm going to find a remotely safe place to hold up for the night. Care help find a place?" Eli said picking taking his eyes off the table and looking down the road before turning around looking down that one. He was trying to find a decent place to hold up.

"I've just made it in too," she said as he studied the map," My bike broke down a while back. I'm hopin' to find a few non-parishable items, liquor, and cigarettes before headin' out."

She shrugged lightly when he asked what she was doing in a place like this. "Just survivin', I suppose."

When he had finished lookin at the map, she folded it and placed it in her pack once more. Murphy thought carefully when he asked if they would find a place together to take a rest. It might be nice trying not to sleep with one eye open for once.

"I guess it wouldn't hurt to team up for a night," she smiled.
