Joseph almost felt as if someone had hit him in the stomach, forcing the air from his lungs. Quickly, he hugged Emilia tighter to his chest. She had been his first daughter, the first to learn to walk and talk. She was a miracle. "Don't even, think that way, Emilia Moore," he instructed firmly. "It is not your job to do anything. We are a family and we are responsible for each other. You aren't alone in this, understand. And for the love of God, don't talk like that in front of your mother," he chuckled. "The woman is very willing to give up hunting and post herself permanently in front of your and your siblings' bedrooms. Please don't give her a rational reason."
A muted hiss, only loud enough from him to hear floated from the kitchen and Joseph laughed again.
Cataline managed a genuine smile. "Nathan's having pancakes, so we're having that unless anyone wants anything else." She doubted they would... Nathan and Karra were too intent on knowing what was wrong. Sharp children, those two. They often made it the hardest when keeping the secret...
"And... nothing is specifically wrong. We're just going to have some company that we may not be quite ready for." She quickly set the gridle on the stove and started it heating while she found the ingredients for pancakes. She mixed it all quickly, just a touch quicker than she should have. The stress was making her careless. "Um, Emilia, could you cook the pancakes for me, they're all mixed up and everything. I just need to start on something. Joseph, ayudeme, por favor."
She slipped out of the back door, frowning distractedly at the sound of something slithering in one of the tubs, and out to the side of the house where there were no windows. She turned and Joseph was there, his arms out and waiting for her. He held her patiently while she clutched at him, her face tucked into the crook of her neck.
"You listened?" Cataline nodded. "We could run." Cataline shook her head.
"They wouldn't understand and the Volturi would find us anyway. It never helped any of the others when they ran."
"We could fight."
Cataline shivered from the raw want in Joseph's voice. He was a man-- vampire-- who was fiercely protective of his family. He would enjoy defending them.
"I hope the Cullens arrive soon..." she sighed and breathed his scent, trying to convince herself that they would all make it through this.
