Scurrying up the last fire escape Grim viewed the peaceful setting on the silent rooftop he had first visited after his meeting with the Muse. He’d never noticed it before but it seemed as if all the noise of the chaotic outside world had dimmed and dispersed as he stood upon this peaceful platform of concrete and steel. After their time in the midday sun many of the flowers were bright and in full bloom. Even in the many years he had wandered this dark world Grim had had little time to learn of such things as flowers, yet just the same he enjoyed the simplistic beauty of them. The sight of something so delicate, beautiful, and full of life was a welcome sight to one of his kind, as deformed and unnatural as he was.
Stepping into the small greenhouse Grim knelt to smell a small yellow flower with curved petals as the sound of a rusty doorknob disturbed the quite tranquility. His scarred head snapping to one side Grim clumsily leapt out of sight, diving behind a large pile of boxes just outside of the small greenhouse. Quickly regulating his breathing Grim peered around the boxes to one side and watched as an elderly man opened the door and headed towards the small greenhouse. The man was very strange to be sure. While he showed the signs of an age that few humans ever reached he walked with a slow leisurely gait that showed no signs of pain or discomfort that commonly came with such age. In his left hand he held a gnarled old stick the showed signs of long use, yet seemed to be held more as a comforting friend rather than a crutch or cane. His chaotic tangle of light brown hair gave him a harmless and strangely natural look.
Stepping over to a small patch of tomatoes in the far corner of the greenhouse the old man turned his back to Grim and carefully began watering the small patch. Seeing his chance Grim slowly got up, heading towards the small fire escape just a few yards away.
“You don’t have to leave if you don’t want to.”
Freezing where he stood Grim kept completely quite. Was it possible he was talking to someone else? Did he have a phone or something on him he hadn’t seen?
“It’s ok; no one will harm you here, promethean.”
Ok, that was definitely him. Regaining his posture and straightening himself to his full height Grim turned towards the old man, who had yet to have turned around, seemingly having found his plants more important than Grim for the time being.
“You can stay here if you like, being your first day here it would probably be best if you first stayed here for a while, just to give you a better feel for the city.”
Blinking in surprise Grim slowly walked towards him.
“How do you know I’m new to this place? And why are you helping me?”
“I know pretty much everyone that lives around here. And why shouldn’t I help you. You’re just a another being that’s been thrown into this strange thing we call life. I help all beings that I can, from the worms in this soil, to the birds in the sky, to the humans that walk in the streets below us, you are no different, no matter what your origins may have been.”
Cocking his head to the side Grim watched the old man.
“But aren’t you human?”
“Human? No, not really, but that doesn’t really matter. If you’d like you can stay here for a while you can. We’ve got room for any that need aid, and food and drink a plenty, no matter your tastes. As long as make no quarrel with the rest of the guests you may stay as long as you like.”
Turning from his gardening the old man looked unflinchingly at Grim, smiling and gesturing towards the door.
“I….I can’t…..it doesn’t work when I stay somewhere for too long. Things just go bad...”
With a knowing look the man headed towards the door.
“Aaaah. The Disquiet. Rather unfortunate thing it is. I can’t cure you of it, very few can for that matter, yet I can assure you as long as you are within these walls it will not hinder you. You may rest here in peace and safety, and leave whenever you like. It is all up to you.”
Feeling very uncomfortable Grim takes swallows and looks fidgets nervously.
“I…I…ok…thank you…I…what is your name?”
“The young call me Uncle, the religious call me Father, and you may call me Bob, just Bob, if you’d like.”
“Bob….”
With another smile and a light bob of his head Bob opened up the rusty door and walked inside. Peering cautiously inside Grim slowly walked through the doorway and was confronted by a very strange sight. The top few levels of the building had been hollowed out, and a peaceful breeze seemed to run throughout the entire upper structure. Smiling and leading the way the old man, Bob, led Grim down a network of platforms and walkways around the outer perimeter of the structure. As they walked Grim noticed curious eyes poking out of many makeshift structures that dotted the canopy-like area. At times he saw the bodies to which they belonged. Sometimes they were small ape-like creatures, other times humans, and other times a scattering of many other races.
As the came down the last walkway Bob led Grim down a rustic spiral staircase into a well lit room that had the look of a central lobby. Turning Bob pointed to a large map to Grim’s left.
“That should help you in finding a suitable room. We have accommodations fit for any individual, whether you seek a quite and peaceful rest in a forest setting or a more energetic environment in one of our upper canopies. Also you may wish to leave your weapons at your room. It is your choice, but many of the other residents will likely not speak to you if they see them.”
“Uh….thank you…”
Smiling politely once more the man headed off to a connected room and began speaking with a young vampiress who sat in behind a large desk in a formal looking room.
Walking up to the large sign Grim read it up and down, finally finding an open room that looked as if it would suit his tastes. He was surprised to find that the building had over a dozen levels, many of which were underground. Taking the small dangling key that sat next to the room’s location on the map he headed out, quickly finding that the many signs along the way made it extremely easy to find his room.
At last he appeared in a small comfy room that had a soft poofy bed in one corner, a small bathroom in another, and other assorted things that gave it a rather homey feel. Sitting down lightly on the plain but comfortable couch that sat on one side of the room Grim took a long look at his new surroundings. It was small, but not cramped, and it was strange, but he felt at peace here, for the first time in a long while. With a content look Grim slowly fell off into a deep sleep.
