A Dark Star Falls ( )

Postby ShadowWake on Tue Jun 03, 2008 5:27 am

Relatively peaceful up until now, Cirrian has found itself under the tightening grip of a Star named Surinder, who can drain the very soul out of a being - both gradually and rapidly - tapping into their powers and life-force like a parasite until the host eventually dies.

The dragoon have known of Surinder’s coming for centuries but until now have been unable to do anything, their fore-knowledge only able to warn those in danger: the humans, the shifters and the sea-people.

In a desperate effort to save Cirrian and those that live upon her forested land, the four races (dragoon, humans, shifters and sea-people) have joined in one last stand, calling upon the help of the Stars as they deem it necessary.

The struggle for freedom from Surinder may cause the dead of thousands but it will save the destruction of a world.

Moonlight shimmered on the waters of Cirrian like powdered diamonds scattered across black satin sheets, the rippling waters reflecting the ghost-like trees and the gentle sound of splashing upon the shore filtering softly into the darkness. The lake was calm and peaceful this night and an owl hooted serenely in the distance, his call alone in the black skies. The air seemed still though, almost tangible, and no breeze shifted the leaves in the forest canopy.

Then suddenly - without a sound – there was the feeling of a presence, a darkened figure silhouetted upon the centre of the lake as though it had always been there, just unseen. The world seemed to blink and in an instant all movement returned, wind hissing through the tree branches and night mammals scurrying about the damp leaf litter. The figure shifted slightly, a long cloak the colour of summer shadows shifting around the form as though caught in a gale, and the silhouette stepped forwards, feet casting rings upon the glassy surface of the water.

Reaching the shore, the shrouded figure lowered the enveloping hood, allowing a glimpse of paper-white skin and hair as black as the deepest void to be seen. Two streaks hanging down either side of his face shone silver, the moonlight glinting off the twin locks of hair like steel blades, matching the pommel of the true sword strapped to his back.
The stranger stayed in that same position – his arms held loosely at his sides and his eyes half-closed – for a long time, and as the sky started to brighten to a deep navy, the sound of hoof-beats could be heard, soft and distant. A deep fog rolled across the damp ground, smothering everything in a grey blanket and muffling the sound of the wakening wildlife, when suddenly a great black horse appeared out of the mist, a lone rider sat upon its back.

“Feoras,” came the voice, soft and yet still somehow managing to portray no feeling, “Your efforts are fruitless and you know it.”

The man named Feoras lowered his head in acknowledgement, a slight smile caressing his narrow lips and his silver-blue eyes flickering with a trace of amusement. “And you, Morwenna, know that your statement holds no truth. You also know that your words and those of the rest of our race hold no sway over me… and never have.”

The Star of Sleep showed no signs of movement and yet Feoras knew she had accepted his words, the huge Star-Stallion shifting beneath her tall frame as he sensed the faintest glimpse of irritability emanating from the usually stoic Goddess. Morwenna’s steed towered over the Star of Travel – the base of his chest just level with Feoras’ head – but Feoras showed no intimidation, holding his ground as the female star moved the horse nearer. Her pitch black hair seemed to shine with an inner light, matching the stallion’s smooth flanks, and her gaze was as hard and as emotionless as stone.

“Do not abandon your duties,” Morwenna said simply and Feoras returned the stare equally as coldly.

“I cannot abandon them of my own free will,” he replied, a trace of anger blazing through his otherwise impassive tone, “And even if I could, I wouldn’t. Death needs a reaper and you and I are forever entwined within that task until we are destroyed. But the Stars have grown negligent and I cannot let justice slip by those who require it.”

With no answer to give, Morwenna turned her mount and disappeared into the fog, the low cloud fading to nothingness soon after. Feoras raised the hood of his cloak once more, his eyes fierce pinpricks within the shadows.

Sometimes he believed that the mortals had the better deal.
