Kyra moved through the woods easily, her black cloak flowing around behind her. The full moon above her was bright, illuminating the night with an eery glow. Kyra was anything but scared, though. She was used to being alone in the night and no animal would dare harm her. See, animals at times are more intelligent than humans... they recognize danger when they see it. They knew that Kyra could be as dangerous to them as a predator, or as helpful to them as the rain. They respected her, and she them. The relationship between Kyra and nature was immaculate.

However, Kyra didn't share the same relationship with humans. She was a Magician and no Magician revealed themselves to the Ungifted unless they had a death wish. That's what had happened to her mother.

But that was another matter all together. Tonight was a night to overcome the nightmare that haunted her when she was in human form. It had to be tonight, because of the full moon, but she still wanted to put it off. So far, Kyra had been unable to suppress the horrible dream unless she was in feline form, her favorite shape. But, she knew that if she wanted to live in the Ungifted cities, she would have to be able to rest as a human.

The full moon above her enhanced her powers, and sometimes giving her new ones, since that was the phase that she was born under. Lately, she had felt comfort only when that moon was abover her, and began labeling herself as the Daughter of the Moon. Somehow, that eery, white orb in the dark sky had been more of a caretaker to her than her own parents.

Tonight, though, the smell on the wind was rain. If it were to begin to pour while she was in human form, it wouldn't be pleasant. She had to find shelter.

So, she walked through the woods, towards a place she knew would suffice. Nearly fifteen minutes later, as raindrops were just beginning to pelt her nose, she spotted the old cabin. It sat in the center of a small clearing, the absence of trees allowing the moon to shine down on it making it seem like it was out of a horror movie. Vines wound their way around shutters that dangled from their hinges. As a soft burst of wind blew, they swung back and forth, creaking slightly. As she approached the cabin, the building grew clearer. The wooden door was beginning to split and its doorknob was stained a dingy red from the rust that coated it.

Kyra headed towards it, and without hesitation, opened the door. The hinges screamed, having not been used in such a long time. The interior smelled moldy and musky, but it was shelter to the growing storm outside.

She closed the door as lightning flashed, illuminating the small, barren room. Her heart pounding with fear of the nightmare she knew she would have when she rested in human form, she lay down beneath the window in a patch of dim light from the moon. Covering herself with her cloak, she closed her eyes, resigning herself to the nightmare once more.

However, just before she could fall into that troubled sleep, the door slammed open. Kyra jolted upright and gasped at the dark figure standing in the doorway.

It seemed to be a darker night than normal, despite the ghostly presence of the full moon, as if some secret deity seethed just beyond the realm of humanity. Every so often, dark clouds would flit across the sky, blocking the light from view. Kane glanced up, noting the unlucky fullness of each blackened cloud. Rain was imminent.

It didn't worry him as much as it might have when he was younger. He had long since accepted the nature of bad weather, and was quite prepared to deal with it. In any case, such a thing would hardly affect him. When he gave himself a long life, he had also given himself a stronger immune system.

The rain began quickly, bringing with it flashes of lightning and roaring thunder. Kane ran his fingers over his wooden staff, grasping it tightly as he searched for sources of power. With a bit of concentration, he had manipulated a large, but dead, branch into taking the form of an umbrella. Yes, he would be fine. It was just another night; one of many he had spent in purposeless wander.

But even so, resigned as he was to wait the storm out under shelter of trees alone, he found a place which had more appeal. A cabin, alone in a moonlit clearing, stood before him. Granted, it was not as welcoming as the inn and tavern which he had only recently left, but it would do fine.

He pushed the door open, rusty metal shrieking in protest, just as another flash of lightning provided the light that he needed to realize that he was not alone...

Kyra silenced a gasp as lightening flashed, briefly illuminating the silhouette of a man. He carried a staff of some sort and wore a cloak, but in the dim light, she couldn't determine his age. She assumeed he must be another Magician, though. Who else would carry a staff with an orb on the tip through the woods?

However, she didn't want to elude to the fact that she was suspicious of his race, and stood, swinging her own cloak around her. "Who are you?" she snapped, slightly harsher than she had intended. It had been a while since she had spoken and her own voice sounded foreign to her.

Kane held up his hands innocently, murmuring words in a low and soothing tone. There was a young woman, just a girl compared to himself, standing on the dusty floor that she had just been lying on. He noticed, and was quite impressed by, the fact that rather than being frightened, she seemed quite angered.

The light faded, reminding him of how brief the illumination was, and how dark the room was without it. He pressed his staff against the floor, causing a dull thump, and the blue orb lit up like a candle.

"Now, now, there's no need to be mad." He said slowly, as if gently admonishing her. Deciding that he might as well answer her question, he continued to say, "My name is Kane. It was raining and I happened upon this... cabin. It looked abandoned, so I decided to take shelter in it."

"I'm sorry to have intruded." He apologized as an afterthought, looking genuinely sorry.

Kyra was almost taken aback at Kane's forwardness to perform magic. Had she been one of the Ungifted, he could have been in trouble. But then again... maybe she was the one in trouble. She stared, unfazed by the glowing orb on his staff.

"Your name is not who you are. I ask again, who are you?" she said, her eyes dark and cold. Would she have been more wary of him had he been an Ungifted? She had never met another Magician other than her mother and brother. Were they all like her family? Afraid and in hiding? No, there was always a bad apple in the bunch, no matter the general. It was the bad apples who gave their race a bad name.

Or was it the fear of the unknown that produced such hatred? The Ungifted didn't understand them, therefore destroyed them. It had always been as such, looking back through history. Even in World War II, America didn't understand the Japanese, therefore they bombed them. Witches in Salem were burned at the stake by the people of the town who thought they worshipped Satan. In fact, not all of the "witches" were even magic users. Some were Magicians, but others were Ungifted. The town's panic overwhelmed them and they murdered because of it.

Would the Magician race be exterminated out of fear? How many were left? Her mother and brother were gone and as far as she knew, she had never met another. Until Kane's appearance, she had never thought that she might be one of few. The thought almost scared her.

Kane noticed the girl's reaction at his display of magic, or lack there of, and assumed that there was nothing to fear. Although it seemed rather pompous of him, he felt as though he could take her in a fight... if it came to that, which, he was relatively sure it wasn't. He had a sneaking suspicion that she was quite like him when it came to their powers, whether it spawned from her apathy or from the fact that she was wandering around in the woods, he was not sure.

His eyes sparkled with amusement, a tad bit odd considering the situation he was in, as she murmured something snide about his half-assed introduction. "Ah, perhaps not, but surely you agree that a name is part of a person?" He countered, a smile teasing at the edges of his mouth. He was beating around the bush, it was true, but he did have some semblance of self-preservation.

"So, milady, do you live here?" He asked, although he was fairly sure he knew the answer. It was simply a change of direction in a conversation that just might lead to an unfortunate event.

Kyra's eyes darkened as Kane made light of her statement. She didn't like his sercretive manner. But then again, without knowing if she was a Magician, perhaps it was self-preservation. Wasn't she doing the same as him?

"Yes, I live here," she replied, backing up to the foggy window. Thunder cracked outside, followed closely by a flash of lightening. In the eerie illumination, Kyra seemed both small and unthreatening, yet at the same time, intimidating. Her eyes were locked on Kane as she reached up to put a finger on one of the vines that had seeped through a crack in the window. As soon as her flesh touched the plant, it began to grow and an incredible rate. Buds that had been dying blossomed within seconds into beautiful, white flowers. The vine grew thicker and made its way up to the ceiling.

"I know what you are. Why are you here?" she asked, her voice like ice.

Kane sighed quietly as his attempt at levity was ignored. Really now, there was no need for the girl to be so serious. She moved toward the window, once again capturing his attention. He watched silently as she reached for the vines and restored the withered plant into vivid blossoms. He nodded, with just a hint of appreciation for her powers, and then turned his attention to the cabin as the vines reached for the ceiling.

She had said that she lived there, but the suspicious lack of furniture convinced him otherwise. He kept that opinion to himself, however. She was far too cautious to state otherwise; but he was already intrigued. He wished to know more about her, but he also kind of wanted to tease her.

"Oh, but I've explained this once before, haven't I?" He whined, feigning comical and, perhaps a bit childish, frustration. "I was simply looking for refuge from the rain. As for what I am, it is a question I have wondered after for a long time. The most I can decidedly declare is that I am, in fact, human. And you?" He nodded, smiling, as he waited for her reaction.

Kyra did not find Kane's antics amusing. She wanted answers. At the present moment, she didn't like his snide attitude and didn't trust him at all. Her mothers words of keeping her enemies closer were slowly fading as her irritation with him grew. If he didn't stop, she was going to throw him out of her cabin. These were her woods; she lived here. She had the right to tell trespassers to leave as far as she was concerned.

"I'm growing tired of your remarks. I want answers. You have come upon my territory, therefore, I deserve them," she said, her voice icy. Her irises suddenly melted from a dark brown to an emerald green and her pupils narrowed into slits. She was prepared to attack should he make any sudden moves.

"I'm not opposed to providing the answers you seek." Kane said, finally growing serious. "I only ask that you tell me what it is you wish to know." He pressed the base of his staff against the floor and leaned against it. Even in the present situation, with lightning flashing ominously behind him and an odd blue glow surrounding him, he did not cut a frightening figure.

He seemed tired, standing there, slightly hunched with water dripping from the makeshift umbrella at his other side. His eyes, as per usual, were soft and genuine, but droopy. His cheeks were more gaunt than usual. He didn't appear at all threatening; he simply looked worn and defeated.

Nonetheless, he did not impose his languor upon his attitude. His seriousness was caused by the girl's will, and was kept carefully free from irritability and anger.

Now that Kane seemed willing to answer questions, Kyra had run out of them. She was no longer sure of what to ask. Through her confusion, though, her expression remained hard and calculating, as if scanning him for any sudden movements.

"What kind of Magician are you?" she asked finally, unable to come up with anything else. She would start there and hopefully that that would lead her to other questions or conversation.

It seemed the full moon held other plans for her this evening than the usual. Kyra should have known that when it was brighter than normal tonight. Perhaps tomorrow would signify the start of her quest. She had spent three years preparing for it, wanting to be completely ready so she could blow her brother's murderers away. Now, when she was about ready to go after them, she had become nervous. Was she truly a killer? Was this really what she wanted to become? What she wanted to portray Magicians as?

Kyra felt she had to avenge Daniel because she never cried at his funeral. She still hadn't mourned him properly. She had been so filled with anger and hatred that she had forgotten to mourn. Perhaps that was why she felt she had to avenge him. She didn't feel she had done anything else right.

"Me? I'm an Arch-Mage, although not as powerful as the title suggests." He smiled, a little wryly and added, "I've just had... a long time to practice." It was a true and dramatic understatement. One might consider ten years to be a long time, but Kane had three lifetimes, and counting, to practice.

His thoughts of the current events were overpowered by reminiscing and forecasting. How much longer would he be on the earth if he had already lived for more than three hundred years while he still appeared to be in his twenties? He sighed silently and forcibly turned his attentions back to the girl. She seemed to be in thought as well, although her eyes remained hard and guarded.

"If I may be so bold, might I know your name, lady?" He requested, wondering whether or not she would reply.

Kyra realized that she hadn't told him her name yet. Now he had asked and she had to quickly decide whether to lie or be truthful. Could he detect lies? She had no idea what an Arch-Mage was, despite the fact that she knew there were different types of Magicians. She only barely knew what she was.

She decided to be honest in case he could tell if she was lying. "Kyra," she stated. "I'm an elemental sorceress."

He had said he wasn't as powerful as he might seem. What did that mean? Did people overestimate him as they underestimated her? Instead of asking immediately, she decided to wait to see his reaction to her statement. Did he know elemental sorceresses were the most powerful of the Magicians? Probably. He seemed to know far more than she did. What he didn't know is that she had still only scratched the surface of what she could do, even with three years preparation.

Kane nodded and gestured at the vines that had enveloped most of the far wall. He assumed that she was an elemental sorceress by the way she had revitalized the plants with a single touch. It was quite impressive, especially to him who had very little innate ability. He wondered how much she knew of magic and its users.

"It is nice to meet you, Kyra." He replied swiftly, returning to trivial pleasantries for lack of anything better to say. There were quite a few things he wished to ask her about, but he wasn't sure if he would receive an answer. It had surprised him when she told him her name and what type of magician she was, although there was slight suspicion that she had used an alias.

"Have you no more questions, Miss Kyra?" He asked quietly, as one might speak to a superior. Although it was contrary to his normal personality, he felt as though it was necessary to earn her trust. There was something about the girl that intrigued him.

Kyra turned her gaze back to her vines, her eyes vacant. "What are your abilities? What can you do?" Her mind suddenly went blank as she stared through the foggy window at the moon.

Why do you torture me so? What have I done to deserve this? What do you have in store for me? Who is he? What does he want? Is he here to help? So many questions flooded her mind. She silently asked the moon all of her inquiries, hesitant to ask Kane.

Lightening flashed again and her eyes reflected brief pain. Daniel had been killed during a full moon. Her parents died during a full moon.

She was born during a full moon.

She had come to believe that nothing in life was coincidence. She knew better than that. No, Kane was here for something. Something for her. She just didn't know what.

Kane blinked, as if he had not expected her to ask a question. He did not know whether or not she had realized this, but such a question showed how much she knew about magicians.

"I can do a lot of things." He replied, his words, although seemingly boastful, were not stated in such a tone. "Almost anything, really, but it is tedious." He pivoted on his left foot so that he was facing the vines, and then lifted his staff. His eyes narrowed with discomfort, but after a few moments, the white flowers morphed into crimson roses. The plant, however, had diminished in size. He exhaled slowly and dropped his arm.

"Unlike you, lady, I can do little without my staff, and what I can do, I do not use my own energy for. I had to draw upon the plant's own energy to alter it."

It was foolish for him to explain his weaknesses to one he had only just met, but he did not sense any danger from Kyra. He was certain that she could be dangerous, but it did not seem as though she would harm him. He watched her carefully, and found, much to his surprise, that her eyes were blank, or, they would be, if not for the faint trace of sadness that had been revealed as her caution faded.

"Is something wrong?" He inquired softly, feeling that what is wrong would be a better question, if he had the courage to ask it.

Kyra snapped back into reality when she heard Kane speak. Though she didn't look at him until he asked her if something was wrong, she heard every word he spoke. "I'm fine," she replied. Her voice was low, but her hard tone had gone. Now her voice was almost monotone, as if she were void of all emotion completely. She was certainly without happiness. Her only emotions were pain and anger. Silently, she wondered if she would ever feel happiness, or a sense of calm, again.

She seemed distracted, and maybe she was slightly. Her eyes were now focused on Kane. "I've been sheltered during my life. I know little about what I am, only that I'm different and feared. My brother didn't know what he was..." she said. She was nervous about saying all of this. She still didn't know if he was truly friend or foe, but she hadn't spoken of anything in so long that she almost felt she needed to say it.

Kane's eyes widened as she began to speak. He had not expected her to say anything about herself until she completely trusted him, and he did not really expect that to ever happen. He looked at her, his gaze light and unimposing. He said nothing, listening quietly.

Sheltered? He did not think that was really the correct usage of the term, always picturing a sheltered person as one who had life rather easy, much like.... well, much like himself as a child. Rather than being ostracized or endangered for his magic, Kane lived in a town where he had been surrounded by those with the same- or greater- ability. He was the same as everyone else, although a little weaker, and he had a decent life. He might have continued to lead that life if he had not been so foolish in the past.

But, no, that wasn't right. How horrible of him to delve into his own thoughts and self-pity when this lady was trying to reveal her own story. He turned his attention back to Kyra.

Kyra's eyes were directed at Kane, but she seemed to be looking through him. Her eyes were glassy, as if she were watching a movie and had forgotten to blink. The movie she was watching was a replay of Daniel's murder.

"Daniel was eleven when he was killed," she said, her voice soft, but monotone. "He was walking home from school. He had no idea what he was, only that he could move things by thinking about it. I had thought he was like me, but I wasn't sure. I hadn't seen any definite signs other than the mind link we had. I saw the three men who killed him through the link. They left him on the side of the road after they beat him to death."

She felt a strange sensation behind her eyes and it took her a moment to realize she was about to cry. Suddenly, she blinked and shook her head slightly. "I'm here on revenge," she said, directing a now hateful glare at Kane, though it wasn't intended for him. "I'm going to kill them like they killed my brother with the same power they tried to destroy. I've spent the past three years here training myself, working towards it."

Suddenly, she felt as if she had said far too much. This was a stranger, despite a common gift they had. Why would she divulge so much information in so little time? It was unlike her. Or was it? Hadn't she been trusting once upon a time? Unfortunately, she wasn't the same little girl she once was. Now seventeen, she had seen far more than any should have to at her age. Telling Kane her story was foolish. But she couldn't take back her words now. She had to wait and see what his reaction was. What he would do now.

Kane's eyes widened ever so slightly at the story he had just been told. It was something which would invoke a great deal of emotion, yet Kyra's voice seemed hollow, almost apathetic. That is, until she revealed her purpose. Vengeance.

He too had once sought after it, in the years that followed the destruction of his beloved town. He had felt so much anger and hatred in that time, and he was fully bent on showing the Ungifted who were guilty of the crime the pain of their victims, that they might recognize and despair in their own sins.

Such a thing had not happened, and although he cursed himself for it at the time, he came to realize that it was wise to not have gone through with the various plans he had created. It did nothing to appease his emotions, but it also did not add guilt to the burdens he carried.

He did not have much to say; what could he? Comforting words were not as consoling as one might think, and thus spoke but a warning. "Revenge," he began slowly, "though sweet at first, returns to itself with bitter fangs."
