Kyra moved through the woods easily, her black cloak flowing around behind her. The full moon above her was bright, illuminating the night with an eery glow. Kyra was anything but scared, though. She was used to being alone in the night and no animal would dare harm her. See, animals at times are more intelligent than humans... they recognize danger when they see it. They knew that Kyra could be as dangerous to them as a predator, or as helpful to them as the rain. They respected her, and she them. The relationship between Kyra and nature was immaculate.
However, Kyra didn't share the same relationship with humans. She was a Magician and no Magician revealed themselves to the Ungifted unless they had a death wish. That's what had happened to her mother.
But that was another matter all together. Tonight was a night to overcome the nightmare that haunted her when she was in human form. It had to be tonight, because of the full moon, but she still wanted to put it off. So far, Kyra had been unable to suppress the horrible dream unless she was in feline form, her favorite shape. But, she knew that if she wanted to live in the Ungifted cities, she would have to be able to rest as a human.
The full moon above her enhanced her powers, and sometimes giving her new ones, since that was the phase that she was born under. Lately, she had felt comfort only when that moon was abover her, and began labeling herself as the Daughter of the Moon. Somehow, that eery, white orb in the dark sky had been more of a caretaker to her than her own parents.
Tonight, though, the smell on the wind was rain. If it were to begin to pour while she was in human form, it wouldn't be pleasant. She had to find shelter.
So, she walked through the woods, towards a place she knew would suffice. Nearly fifteen minutes later, as raindrops were just beginning to pelt her nose, she spotted the old cabin. It sat in the center of a small clearing, the absence of trees allowing the moon to shine down on it making it seem like it was out of a horror movie. Vines wound their way around shutters that dangled from their hinges. As a soft burst of wind blew, they swung back and forth, creaking slightly. As she approached the cabin, the building grew clearer. The wooden door was beginning to split and its doorknob was stained a dingy red from the rust that coated it.
Kyra headed towards it, and without hesitation, opened the door. The hinges screamed, having not been used in such a long time. The interior smelled moldy and musky, but it was shelter to the growing storm outside.
She closed the door as lightning flashed, illuminating the small, barren room. Her heart pounding with fear of the nightmare she knew she would have when she rested in human form, she lay down beneath the window in a patch of dim light from the moon. Covering herself with her cloak, she closed her eyes, resigning herself to the nightmare once more.
However, just before she could fall into that troubled sleep, the door slammed open. Kyra jolted upright and gasped at the dark figure standing in the doorway.
