Jude watched the young girl disappear into the bathroom, excited about the fluffy towels. As she came back with a towel for his hair, he smiled. "Thank you very much," he said, taking the towel and drying his graying hair. Setting the towel aside, he watched Lilibet find herself a towel and claim the bed next to the chair.

"Why wouldn't people like you?" Jude asked. "You're a sweet little girl." Leaning back in the worn out chair, he set his hands on the arms. His eyes were vacant, as if far away. Thoughts roamed here and there around the country side, making mental notes of the places he and Saran had yet to go. Setting up a traveling shop was a time consuming business, however profitable.

Saran, in the meantime, ran out into the street, holding his hand above his head as he watched the few people scurrying into doorways out of the rain. Pushing on, he came to the cart. Knocking on the side to catch the attention of the driver, he announced what his father had told him. Or at least something like that. It was close enough. "Father says to stable the horses. You can find a place to stay, he thinks we will be here for a while. We are staying at an inn, it has a man dressed in white on the board."

The driver nodded, clicking his tongue and tapping the reigns to get the horses moving and out of the rain. As he left, Saran stood for a moment watching the beautiful horses. Once a dapple gray Irish cob, one a black and white gypsy. They were not the ideal cart horses, not by any means, but they got the job done and seemed to enjoy each other's company despite their size difference. Shaking himself out of his daze, Saran ran back to the inn, following the directions to their room. On the way, he caught a snippit of a conversation from the parlor.

"... a demon in the city."
"Oh, I know, there is a priest trying to find it."

Saran stopped on the stairs, foot half picked-up to set on the next step. He cocked his head to the side, trying to hear more. A cough from behind him caught his attention. Turning, he saw the rotund inn keeper. He had a scowl on his large face, causing Saran to apologize hastily and rush up the stairs to the room. Stopping in the doorway, he nodded to his father and to Lilibet. "The driver took the horses to the stables and is finding a place to stay," he reported.

Jude nodded. "Thats good. Now, its about time to sleep proper, in a decent bed," he said with a slight yawn.
Speak softly and carry a big stick.
That way, when they dont hear you, you can hit them in the knees.

I'm finally back. I'm terribly sorry I was gone so long.

Lilibet opened her mouth to answer Jude's question and then closed it again, her expression guarded. Her small face creased into a frown as she thought. The man was nice and she didn't want to scare him away like the others, but if she didn't tell him then they would get to him... she would get to him...

Avoiding his gaze, Lilibet lowered her eyes to the blanket, playing absently with her bear. "There's just... something about me they don't like..." she answered, but as she was about to say more, Saran wandered into the room with news of his errand, and she closed her mouth again. It wasn't that she didn't trust the boy but she needed to tell an adult first: they were likely to understand better.

Lilibet nodded at Jude's comment about sleep, though she was no longer feeling tired. Hopping nimbly off the bed, she wandered over to the crib, reaching up to place Riley carefully inside before clambering in after him. Pulling the blanket over herself, Lilibet snuggled down, Riley under one arm and her thumb in her mouth and closed her eyes, trying to sleep but listening intently all the same. She had learnt not to trust the darkness so much.

Raye tapped at the door. It was lgetting late but she wanted to make sure the guests were content. She was the inn-keeper's daughter and loved to welcome in the guests. She had soft, wavy jet hair and lightly tanned skin. She couldn't wait to meet the new guests.

Her violet-blue eyes stared at the door so intensely that, at any moment, it could quite possibly catch flame at any moment. She quickly straightend her skirt and parted her hair nicely. She hoped she looked presentable.

A delicate smile spred across her pretty face. She heard a voice. She bounced exitedly.

Jude shook his head. "What about you couldn't they like?" he wondered as Lilibet curled up on the bed, her eyes closed in sleep. There was a low knock on the door, causing Jude to stand from his chair. He motioned to Saran for a moment. The tension in the room was high. Had someone followed them to the inn? Someone unfriendly?

Looking for acceptance from his father, Saran opened the door to find a young woman. Smiling politely, he said in his heavy accent, "Hello, may we help you?"

Lilibet froze in her crib at the knock on the door, her ears suddenly tuned in to every sound in the room. Were they to take her away like the last ones? The child couldn't be sure anymore. Within the space of a few hours friends had turned easily to enemies, shifting from calm, helpful, loving individuals to angry, frightened people who just wanted to get rid of her.

All because of you... she thought, her little face scrunching into a frown.

Why else? came the returning answer from her mind, You struggle and we will always make it difficult... always, Demon-Child.

Lilibet pressed her face into Riley, trying in vain to ignore the voices but, as always, unsuccessfully.
But if I don't then you will hurt people, she told the whispers, And I don't want you to. I won't let you!

You have before... the whispers cackled, the evil laughter reverberatig around her head, and Lilibet whimpered, pressing her hands against her ears.

"I won't let you!" she said out loud, her voice catching,"It's mine! It's mine!"

Ryan walked around the edge of the city, notching a farmer's cart enter the small, otherwise normal town. Instead, he shrugged it off, heading to pursue other leads. Houlton's villagers all seemed like the normal sort, going off into tales of "I saw witches, and demons," but he found nothing worthy of note, until he came back, several hours wasted.

"So... the only lead is the family itself, and they are all dead... " He muttered to himself, his small book covered in notes. "Heh... I need sleep, take this case after a good rest, and that will finish it up." the man then walked back to the edge of town, his boots wet with the fresh mud of fields, his jacket smelling of newly cut crops...

Raye smiled at the boy. "Hello! Is there anything I can bring you?" She curtsied [sp?] with a pretty smile. As she stood up she blushed slightly. "Oh! Where are my manners?" She politely added, "I'm Raye, the inn-keeps daughter!" She brushed back some hair that had fallen in her face.

She leaned into the door as the child yelled. "Hmm? Is everything alright?" She had heard plenty of spoiled children say those exact words, but this was nothing like it. She turned to Saran with worried eyes. "Would she like some warm milk of a cookie or something?"

Saran frowned, a small finger over his lips in thought. Turning to his father, he tilted his head questionably. At a shrug from Jude, Saran turned around happily. "Warm milk and cookies all around!" he said with a smile.

Jude shook his head. "They're supposed to be sleeping," he said, turning his attention back to Lilibet, who happened to be having a strange waking dream. "Are you okay? Is there anything you would like before bed?" he asked.

((haha - you'll never believe how much that comment cheered me up... ^_^ ))

Lilibet's eyes snapped open at Jude's concerned question, fear quickly softening to relief at the sight of the friendly faces. She seemed to think for a minute and then nodded decisively.

"I like cookies too," she smiled at the lady in the doorway, "I like cookies, please."

Deciding that it would be easier not to fight against it, Lilibet climbed back out of the crib - picking up Riley soon after - and wandered over to Jude. Sitting the teddy on his knees, she looked up at him and then, feeling suddenly shy, she stared down at her bare feet, drawing Riley close to her chest.

"Can I sit with you for a bit?" she mumbled quietly, peering up through her long red fringe with hopeful blue eyes, "I isn't tired yet. And I don't want bad dreams again. Please?"

Raye hadn't left yet instead she smiled, "Well! Your just a doll aren't you?" Raye added, "Your not tired yet, darling? Want to come and help me make the cookies?" Raye hoped she would. She glanced at Jude, "Would that be alright with you, sir?" She turned back to Lilibet, "What kind? Chocolate-chip? Sugar? Peanut better?"

She smiled warmly. Something inside drew her to the small child.

Jude looked at Lilibet. "Would you like to make cookies with Miss Raye?" he asked kindly. "Its alright. Saran can go with you, if you would like," he offered.

Saran jumped up and down. "I've never made cookies before! It would be so fun!" he said happily. "Can I really make cookies, father?"

__

The driver, Jock, walked into the inn, bought his room, and set up in room 1, the first room on the main floor. Setting his things down, he cracked open the window, listening to the sounds from the street. He peered out, hoping the horses were well cared for. The Irish Cob, Benny, was fourteen years old and getting up there for a cart horse. The gypsy, rightly named Gypsy, was seven and did most of the pulling. Benny pretended to pull the cart, if he could get away with it.

Chuckling to himself, Jock took a seat at the table, pulling out a paper and pen. He had a wife at home to write to.

Lilibet's blue eyes lit up like diamonds at the thought of baking and she smiled at Jude broadly.

"I like cookies," she said again and turned to the lady stood in the doorway, "I like making cookies, please. Peanut butter ones. They's all sticky and yummy."

Trotting over to the woman, Lilibet placed her small hand in hers, looking up with happiness through her red hair. Next to her, Saran was already chattering on excitedly. She turned to him with a smile, and took hold of his hand in her free one. "I teach you," she grinned, "We make cookies and bring to show dad... your daddy."

Lilibet frowned slightly at her mistake but soon beamed again as Raye turned, leading them down the stairway. They were going to make cookies!

Lying at Jude's feet, alone but for the older gentleman, Riley lay, forgotten.

Re: 'Demon-Child' ( )

Postby Skallagrim on Thu May 01, 2008 12:55 pm

Deep in the shadowed halls of the Grand Castle, the Xindhi Queen stirred, a thrum of reality caused her to shift in her eternal slumber, a child, a being of immense power ad been born. A change in the patterns of the holon of the world where the child had been born would prove of interest to the Dark Queen.

Somewhere in the vast landscape of morbid towers and flittering shadows a figure stirred and rose from her slumber. The Queen had called forth the Aeryn…a Xindhi warrior woman of great skill and power to be the observer and record of the event.

Slowly the Aeryn rose, the black plate armor, tinged with orange shifted and set as the woman stretched and cast her gaze upon the long shimmering corridor that pointed the way through realms and dreams towards the child.

Jesse the Aeryn, smiled and bowed as the thoughts of the Shadow Queen roiled and flooded her mind, “As you wish, I shall observe the changes and watch the child.” Glancing down into the encasement she had risen from, Jesse reached in and pulled forth a massive two-handed sword, World Flayer.

Summoning the great dread mount that most Xindhi favored, Jesse mounted and began trotting off towards the thrum that had caused the Shadow Queen to shift in her dreams. The ghastly hooves clattering on the dark stone echoed through the silent halls of the Grand Castle, and so the Champion known as Jesse the Aeryn began her long ride through the worlds and realms of magic and technology, through sacred and profane, the dull orange glow that flowed from her eye sockets flared as she approached the realm of the child.

The great undead charger passed through shadows of the realm, casting its ghastly head about as the world thrummed and resonated with the presence of the Xindhi. Jesse the Aeryn felt the strings of the holon and weaved the quintessence around her, slowly the pair slipped between the shadows, as they began searching for the source of the thrum. Searching for the source that had summoned the sleepers to awaken and watch once again the events of a life of destiny.

Saran bounced along the hallway, a ball of excitement. Giggling, he looked over the banister. "It's a long way down," he said with a nod. Then, returning to the woman before him, he pulled at her skirt. "Where's the kitchen? Are we gonna make tons of cookies?" He paused for a moment and frowned, his small hand lifting to his chin. "What about bed time?"

Jude looked down, seeing the small bear. He picked the stuffed animal up, setting it on his lap. It looked like it had been through hell and back. Most definitely a little child's toy. Smiling, Jude stood up, setting the bear in the chair. Walking to the larger bed, he flopped down on it. Kicking his boots off, he stared at the ceiling. There would be no sleep until the children were back in the room, sleeping themselves. It had been slightly stupid of him to let two children go off to make cookies with a stranger, though in this town it wasn't much of a deal. Houlton was quite easygoing.

Lilibet frowned slightly as they reached the stairway and began to descend. Her head was hurting and her breath felt short. Voices, louder than before, were echoing in her mind like a thousand people each shouting something different from the top of a mountain, the sound reverberating around her head until she winced, pressing her free hand against one ear.

...Soon...
...And Death shall reap souls from the living...
...Torn in two...
...None shall save them...
...The child will come...
...Demon-Child...
...Child of Death...

Deep within the chaos and clamour of Lilibet's mind, only one voice could be heard clearly - its tone sickly sweet like honey.

Demon-Child... it soothed, Demon-Child... you cannot resist any longer. You hear them? It is you they speak of... you are the bringer of death. You will reap and we will sow. You have nothing to protect you now...

Lilibet's eyes flickered into focus, her face horror-struck, a tiny cry emerging from her throat. Riley. Spinning on her heel, the little girl let go of the woman's hand, pushing past Saran in her hurry. She could feel her headache building, the voices becoming louder and louder until soon they drowned out any other noise around her and she pressed her palms to her ears, tears streaming down her pale cheeks.

It was too late to find him now: she had to go.

Bare feet slapping against the Inn's damp floorboards, Lilibet ran, her small, lithe form slipping under reaching arms and her blue eyes focussed solely on the door. Panting hard, she stumbled onto the rain-washed streets, the storm immediately wetting her red hair once more, and looked around wildly. Safe. She needed to find somewhere safe...

Dragging herself through the dark town, her legs shaking with the increasing effort, Lilibet spotted the stables and immediately headed towards it. Minutes later, her chill hand touched the cold wood of the doorframe and she staggered inside, falling forwards - as her little legs gave way - to lie still upon the raspy straw.

Inside Lilibet's mind, the voice laughed triumphantly.

Jesse stood and watched the tavern, the deep orange glow of energy that swirled and incandesced where her eyes were indicated that the Aeryn was indeed puzzled.

Extending resonance of her senses, allowing the thrum of reality to merge and become visible, Jesse watched with fascination as spectral energies swirled and darted about the tavern, clearly something of power was within. The strength of the source was scintillating and pulsed with an energy that gave the Xindhi warrior a pause, the energy was indeed powerful, for this holon it could be one of the pillars of magic.

Narrowing her eyes, Jesse began to draw the quintessence of the world to her, shaping and forming a more acceptable form. Slowly the mantle of a flesh washed over her, the energy being replaced with wide and bright hazel eyes, the stringy hair plastered to her head, billowed and extended into a mane of chestnut that cascaded over her shoulders.

The black and orange plate armor flashed and muted, hiding the power of the Xindhi in a cloak of normalcy. The great blade, now showed age and wear, belying the strength that pulses and thrummed within.

Gritting her teeth, Jesse knew that any entity of magical ability might pierce the veil that she had wrapped herself in, but to a normal, mundane creature the magic would hide the Xindhi from prying eyes.

A sudden breath escaped the lithe and powerful form, as Jesse began to inhale oxygen; it was a sensation that Xindhi had long forgotten how to do. Forcing the ancient memories to flood into her body again, Jesse slowly began a rhythmic and consistent pattern of inhaling and exhaling, subtle and slow.

For a brief moment the illusion faltered as the skeletal features of the Aeryn shone through, then it was gone, the mask was complete. Jesse frowned and shook her head, steeling her self she went to the door and knocked loudly.

Ryan shuddered, the exorcist not used to such a large amount of spiritual energy in such a small down, the wave knocking him from his stride on the cobblestones of the villages. His hat, the expression of his rank, and in a way, a part of his person fell, hitting the faint dirt. He looked around at first, making sure that the feeling was not a cold breeze, but the very air was still, almost as if the wind itself was silenced by a mysterious force. Bending down, he placed the fallen cap on his head, the wide brim regaining its normal stance.

“These days, I can never get any easy work done…” He muttered, as he placed his quarterstaff in his hands, wrapping his fingers around the interwoven prayer.

Let my prayer be set forth in your sight as incense, the lifting
up of my hands as the evening sacrifice, Yours is the day, O God,
yours also the night; you established the moon and the sun. You
fixed all the boundaries of the earth; you made both summer and winter.

“And let them not forget who is their maker…” The exorcist wandered towards the city center, the staff held slightly above the normal walking position. He was hunting, for a new prey, the Demons who would dare rebel against God himself…
