'Demon-Child' ( )

Postby ShadowWake on Sat Apr 12, 2008 8:48 am

The heavy balck clouds threw their tears to the ground, blinding everything, blurring everything - like it wanted to forget all the pain and anger of the world. Words whispered into the dark night, soft and sinister, and lightning flickered across the sky, a loud rumble following immediately afterwards.

Demon... Demon-Child... the voices murmured.

Lilibet Grey stood in the storm - her long, natural-red hair plastered to her face - clutching a battered teddy to her chest, and looked out into the rain, her blue eyes glazed. Her white dress was tattered and almost as dirty as her face but she seemed not to notice, simply staring into the darkness, the trees hissing ominously in the high wind.

She made no move at the sound of the horse and cart arriving, completely obvilious as it drew alongside her on the well-worn dirt path, a figure leaning out of the window to call at her.

"Hey, you there, Child!"

Demon-Child... The voices whispered in Lilibet's head and she held the bear closer.

((OOC: I'm only intending to do a couple of posts with Lilibet as a child - the rest will be in the future when she has grown up. She is currently 6 years old ad the rest of her story will be revealed later. For now, I'd like someone to take her in. There is the possibility of magic in this story but in this world it is subtle for the moment, becoming more widely known as Lilibet grows up. RPGateway rules apply but other than that, have fun! ^_^ ))

[[Hope its ok for my post, if not kick me out >< ]]

Jude opened the door to his small cart after the window call had failed to get the child's attention. Hunched over in the four-foot tall door, he waved to the young child. "Child, the rain isn't a place for you. Come into the carriage," he said warmly, moving aside slightly to allow her to see his own son, a ten year old boy by the name of Saran. "We're going to the next village. You're welcome to come with to find your parents." At the mention of parents, Jude frowned slightly. Where were the child's parents? Shaking his head, he opened the door wider, squinting against the beating rain.

His son, Saran, stood from his seat and dipped out the door, under his father's arm. Holding a hand over his head to block the rain, he put his hand on the girl's shoulder. "Are you alright?" he asked, his heavy accent slurring the words together. "Better get in the cart, dont want to catch cold do you?"
Speak softly and carry a big stick.
That way, when they dont hear you, you can hit them in the knees.

((That's fine! ^_^ ))

Lilibet looked up slowly at the touch on her shoulder, almost as if waking from a dream. Her deep blue eyes narrowed, emotions moving quickly across her face: fear... confusion... sadness...

"Daddy?" she whispered enquiringly, her eyes filling with tears even as the rain poured down her cheeks. Lilibet's gaze found the boy's and her bottom lip trembled as she squeezed her bear tighter. "Where's my Daddy?"

Looking up at the carriage, she saw the man's smiling face once more, a longing so profound instantly overcoming her. She started shivering, the shaking beginning in her toes and moving rapidly upwards until it rippled across her shoulders. Scared, confused and tired, Lilibet finally allowed the boy to lead her up the steps and into the dry cart, all the while listening to him talk. His voice was strange and though soothing, it reminded her how far she was from home.

"Where'm I?" she asked the man between chatters as he closed the carriage door, "Where's my Daddy?"

You killed him... the voices whispered into her mind and she began to cry, pressing her teddy against her face.

"I din', I din', I din'," Lilibet sobbed, huddling into the corner of the seat, "I dint."

Saran frowned slightly as the girl spoke about her father. "I'm not sure about you're father, but we will help find him," he said, trying to help the girl as much as possible as they stepped into the cart.

Jude watched the young girl as she hesitantly allowed Saran to lead her to the cart. Closing the door after they were securely seated on the wooden benches, he got the horses moving again. As the cart bucked forward and the world swayed, Jude himself sat down across from the children. Looking the young girl over, he noted the teddy bear and the wounded, frightened look in her eyes. As she hugged the bear closer, she started to repeat the word "Didn't" in a way that would have been cute, had it not been for the torment in her voice.

Jude reached a heavily calloused hand out, comforting the young girl. "There, there, you're safe now. Get some rest, we can search for your parents tomorrow morning, in town." Looking at the girl's tattered dress, he smiled to himself. "As well, we can get you something not so wet," he said, standing in the swaying cart to grab a cloth bag from a top rack. Opening it, he tugged out an old nightshirt, barely worn. Clearly the man had little time to undress for sleep. He offered the girl the checkered nightshirt. "If you'd like to get out of those soaked garments," he added.

((Fox - no worries, I couldn't get on 'cuz the server was down anyway. Chikita - the best place to join may be once we get to the village. Don't know who you want to be but a mother/sister/older-friend figure would be a nice idea - maybe another member of Jude's family (if that's ok with you, Fox)?))

Lilibet sniffed, wiping at her eyes with the back of her hand and then watching the man carefully. He stood up in the swaying cart and Lilibet's eyes widened in awe at the easy motion, her thumb slipping into her mouth as she followed his every movement with her royal-blue gaze. Seeing the man offer the nightshirt, she removed her thumb, taking the large garment in her hands.

"Than'you," she replied, her tears starting to cease. Placing the bear carefully beside her, Lilibet held it in her lap, smoothing the material with one hand, and then attempted to pull it over her head, getting herself in a bit of a tangle. A tiny giggle emerged from the checkered folds. "Is big."

With a few directions from the man, Lilibet eventually managed to take off her soaking dress and put on the nightshirt - though it ended up back-to-front - and she was soon curling up against the wall of the carriage, her teddy held in one hand and the thumb of the other back in her mouth. As the horses trotted calmly on into the storm, Lilibet's eyelids grew heavy and soon she was asleep, her dishevelled hair arranged around her delicate face in rich, red ringlets and a small frown on her brow.

[[Its fine with me. Whatever happens to work. :P ]]

Jude smiled at the child's innocent sweetness, glad he could calm her. Helping her with the large shirt, he couldn't help but remember the days Saran needed such help. Watching the girl curl up in the corner with her teddy, he motioned to Saran. "Boy, come sit over here, let her sleep," he said kindly. "The village is only a few miles away, we'll be in a warm room soon. Then we can find out where her parents are..." If she has any, he added to himself.

Saran jumped up and stumbled to the other bench, dropping down heavily for his four-foot, skinny frame. "Father, what is wrong with the girl?" he asked, oblivious to normal customs.

"She is... lost, I believe," Jude answered, patting Saran on the shoulder. "Dont speak like that about people, boy, they dont like it much."

Saran nodded. "I'm sorry, father. I'll remember that in the future."

Though asleep, Lilibet was still semi-aware of the soft voices around her, their murmuring shifting into her dreams.

"What's wrong with the girl? Why can't she be like a normal child?"
The woman's voice was panicky, shaking with tears, and the sound of footfalls paced the floor.
"No matter what she is, she's our child, Melissa," came a low tone, full of love and concern, "She's our child."
"How can you say that when she hurt you?" shrieked the woman, "She could kill someone! She could kill..."
"That's enough, Melissa," the man snapped, the footfalls going quiet as their owner stopped pacing, "She's just an innocent girl..."
"Innocent?! Innocent?!"

Lilibet shifted in her sleep with a soft cry, the frown becoming deeper. "Daddy?" she mumured.

"That girl is not innocent!" the woman's voice continued and there was the sound of drawers opening and closing, "She is a Demon-Child! And you must do it before she does it to someone else!"
The sound of a slap reverberated up the stairs. "Snap out of it, Melissa! I will not kill our only born child!"
There was a pause in sound and then suddenly, the stairs thundered as someone ran up the steps.
"Melissa!!" came the man's anguished shout as he followed his wife.

The cart stopped and Lilibet woke up with a gasp, the last vestiges of the dream leaving tears in her eyes. Meeting the gaze of the man opposite her as the dream started to fade, Lilibet frowned and her bottom lip trembled. "Will you kill me too?" she asked, in a more adult tone than her young six years.

Postby Ryand-Smith on Wed Apr 16, 2008 8:41 am

The man sat up, looking around his office, documents spilled over the desk, a quill fallen over papers which said "Smith, Ryan, D." The wandering exorcist had found himself in this tiny town, after the local preacher sent him a letter about an odd death managed to reach him. He sighed, knowing this was just more of the exaggeration of bored villagers, not a real case of magic. "Ugh... what time is it..." He muttered, looking at a almost broken hourglass. "Its early," he muttered, no shadow helping him as he walked from his room. He placed on the grey outer jacket of the wandering inquisition officials, and wandered out into the town, preparing to start his investigation into this death.

The smell of an old village, horses and people seemed to be a dramatic contrast to the cit where he was nominally stationed to, but his jacket seemed to give him a slight look of a vampiric being himself, the high collar masking his face in the early light of the moon. "So, which house will I start" he began, walking towards the outskirts of the town.

[[so sorry I went MIA >< I'm having issues of late. I'll try to be here once a day]]

Jude watched the young girl. She was dreaming. It couldn't be a good dream the way she was acting, and Jude had the paternal instinct to wake her up and ask if she was okay. She twitched, murmuring 'Daddy' once more before she seemed to snap out of her dream and sit up as the cart stopped. Jude got to his feet as the young girl asked, "Will you kill me too?"

For a moment, Jude couldn't talk. His mind tried to wrap around the words, their meaning. Looking over, he was glad Saran had fallen asleep leaning against the window. He leaned down, to eye-level with the girl. Pausing before he spoke, the man put both his hands on his knees. "Miss, why would you ask that?" he wondered aloud, his voice soft yet shaken.

((OOC: no worries, just post when you can!))

Lilibet fixed him with a stare that spoke volumes, her bear still held tightly against her chest.

"Because they did," she answered, no trace of tears in her eyes, just simple sadness, "They all did." Looking over to the opposite seat, she saw the man's son sleeping silently and felt her chest hitch. "My daddy loved me too," Lilibet said quietly, her voice shaking slightly. "But he was the only one."

Her head turned to look out of the window, suddenly noticing the lamplights through the rain. "Where are we?" Her voice had turned childish once more - so childish in fact, that it seemed as if she was knowledgably trying to change the subject. "I'm hungry."

He walked out from his tavern apartment the man not choosing to stay at the local church like a normal inquisitor would. He nodded to the barkeep, tossing him a few coins as he headed out into the town, placing on a wide brimmed hat, and pulling out a proper umbrella. "So... this is the place where the so called... Demon.. is" he muttered, the formalness of the town bothering him. He headed down by a lamplight, figuring he would ask an incoming traveler if they had heard of this madness.

Jude looked puzzled, and indeed he was. The girl's matter-of-fact tone suggested she was older than she looked. Shaking his head, he asked, "Do you know where your daddy is?" He hoped to be able to pry the information out of her, to be able to bring her to family instead of dropping her at a church or somewhere they would take care of her. Jude could hardly afford to take care of himself, let alone himself and two children. His hope went unanswered as the intelligent little girl looked out the window and asked innocently, "Where are we?"

Jude smiled. This would be a hard nut to crack. "We are in Houlton, at least that is where we are supposed to be. Its a little cozy place." Picking his bag up, he pulled out a small strip of beef jerky and offered it to the child. "This is all we have right now, I'm afraid. We will be going to the Inn, they probably have food there. Better food, that is," he said.

Saran yawned, opening his green eyes and stretching. "Father, are we there?" he asked sleepily, scratching his blonde head. Looking at Lilibet, he smiled, unable to contain his childish glee. "Hi! Did you sleep well?" he questioned.

Lilibet accepted the strip of meat from the man with a word of thanks, her bear now dangling from one hand, and smiled at the newly awakened boy.

"'Llo," she returned, chewing on the jerky, "I sleeped fine, thank you, mister... mister..."

Frowning, Lilibet looked back to the man as he opened the door to the carriage, her blue eyes questioning. "What's your names?"

Her gaze brightened briefly once they had stepped out of the cart and she turned back to the boy, holding out a small grubby hand, "I'm Lilibet. And this is Riley. Say hello, Riley..." she made the tattered bear wave his hand and then giggled, "He likes you. He's a very shy bear but he does keeps the nasties away."

Seemingly happy, Lilibet gave the teddy a hug and rocked on her heels, humming an old nursery rhyme. Peering into the now drizzly night, she spotted a sign hanging from a low buiding, creaking in the wind as it swung back and forth. On it, was a picture of a man, dressed in white and wreathed in sunlight. Gold words were etched beneath the painting: The Angel's Rest.

"He's beautiful..." Lilibet breathed with child-like wonder, her eyes wide in awe, "Can we go there?"

Saran giggled childishly. "We dont know each other's names! Thats an important part of being friends," he said solemnly, before breaking out in a smile. "My name is Saran." Upon hearing the girl's name and the bear's as well, he made a sweeping, awkward bow. "It is nice to meet you, Lilibet and Riley."

Jude smiled at the exchange, glad to see Saran making friends. Standing by, he nodded to Lilibet. "My name is Jude. I'd like to help anyway I can. I guess I'll start helping by saying yes, we can go to the Angel's Rest." Grinning, he closed the small door to the cart, motioning to the driver to keep the horses tied. You never knew what was going to happen in towns like this. Things weren't often bad, just misunderstood. Demons were popular scapegoats now, as well as witches.

Herding the children through the gloomy night, he hurried under the stoop of the Angel's Rest, before it decided to start pouring down torrents of rain again. "Come now, children, lets get out of the cold, wet air, its not good for the body."

Lilibet stared around her as they hurried through the dim street, the darkness pressing into her sight as surely as a blindfold, despite the flickering glow of the lamplight. Jude's nightgown swirled around her legs and she grasped at it, raising it from the floor so that it stayed clean. She knew her manners.

As they reached the stoop, the door of the inn opened, smothering her in a wash of warm, bright air and sound.

Here... the voices whispered in her mind.

Lilibet slapped her hands over her ears, Riley's arm still held firmly in her right, and shook her head, cerulean eyes wide. "No," she whispered, inaudible in the din of the pub, "There are people here."

We know... came the returning answer.

Lilibet lowered her hands slowly with a frown, seemingly building up the courage for something. "Well, I won't let you," she stated firmly, "I'm strongest than you."

For now... they mumured, For now, Demon-Child...

Impulsively, Lilibet grasped the hand next to her, her small palm icy cold. Looking up, she saw Jude's concerned gaze and smiled slightly. "I've never been in a Nin before."

Jude smiled warmly despite the frozen palm grasping his hand. Walking to the counter with Lilibet and Saran in tow, he slapped his hand down several times to get the inn-keep's attention. As the jolly fat man came to the counter in a bustle, Jude said politely, "A room, if you will. Three beds. And some clean dry clothes, if possible, for the young lady."

For a moment the inn-keep stared at the young girl, then his eyes shifted back to Jude. "Yes, of course. The room up the stairs and all the way to the left," he said, handing Jude keys. "Please don't forget to pay before you leave."

Jude took the keys and smiled. "Of course, I always pay. Thank you kindly, sir." Turning to Saran, he motioned to the boy. "Run back to the cart, please. Tell the driver he can stable the horses and find himself a place to stay. Hurry now, you need to get into some clean, dry clothes."

"Yes, father," Saran said, bowing politely before turning and dashing out the door into the cold drizzle.

Walking up the stairs with Lilibet, Jude opened the door to the room and was satisfied to see two beds and a cot in the corner, as well as a closet and a bathroom. Sighing heavily, he left the door open and sat in an overstuffed, stained armchair. A traveling merchant was never quite at home anywhere, but this seemed to work well enough.

Lilibet watched the exchange between Jude and the Innkeeper in silence, turning in awe as Saran ran out to talk to the carriage driver. She had never been allowed to have such responsibility as a six year old and it was a novel scene.

Following Jude up the stairs, still holding tightly onto his hand, Lilibet smiled at the sight of the room. It was simple but cosy and she immediately let go of Jude, running into the bathroom. She ran out again, her face a picture of happiness.

"Fluffy towels!" she grinned, pointing, and then ran back in, coming back out with a brownish but soft towel in her wake, handing it to Jude, "Your hair's all wet."

As he picked up the towel, she ran to the closet, rummaging inside while murmuring something to herself. Emerging, she proudly wielded a worn blanket, tottering over to the bed as it dragged behind her. Climbing onto the bed next to Jude's chair, Lilibet sat herself down with crossed legs, drawing the blanket around herself, her blue gaze fixed upon his and a thumb in her mouth.

"Tankyou," she said, removing her thumb, "But I can't stay. People don' like me here."
