"How many times you escaped death? Once, and that is all."

Matthew walked towards the window to nearly the extent of the chain, peering out at the people below. It was already night out, and the bright city lights shined throughout the city, revealing a side of Zenshima that one does not generally see at first glance, a side meant for better things. It truely did look rather spectacular, and if Matthew did not know of all the crime that inhabited the City of Glass, he may have thought better of the place.

"Very few in history have ever escaped death, you being one of them. It doesn't matter what a person writes in their autobiography; even if they felt as though they could feel death calling them, it is all a load of well worded bull. We malvadons only come when someone is truely going to die, and not a second sooner. The people upstairs assign each person we must bring death to, with precise time that they are destined to die. They don't make mistakes, I'll assure you of that. As for you..."

Matthew looked back towards his master with wide smile on his face. However, his smile wasn't as terrible as before, but rather one of content, almost friendliness.

"You're just one really lucky bastard."
Life is like a box of chocolates; You never know what you're going to get?

Last time I checked, we determined that you're getting a box of chocolates.

"Are you sure you just didn't turn the tables of fate yourself, to be in your favor and I'm not merely more than a puppet in your plan?" Rick studied him for a moment, laying back to stare at the ceiling; he wouldn't be sleeping tonight, this was way to much to handle. "So... Matthew, how old are you? I've read your kind live for quite a long while... What's it like? Dealing in death, doesn't it get old ever awhile?" Rick's eyes drifted back to rest on Matthew, smiling back at him. The chain meant nothing to Rick, he really didn't want to control Matthew but figured it would come in handy one of these days, plus; he finally had someone to talk to besides yelling at his television when he bothered to watch it.

"Say, Matthew... Have you ever owned a bookstore?"

"My, my. You certainly are one of the questioner types, aren't you?"

Matthew chuckled to himself; for the first time in his life, he was actually enjoying himself. He had nearly forgotten that he could smile just earlier today, and now he was having a rather friendly talk with a human. He preferred someone to talk to as well.

"Trust me, Master, I haven't met with you before in my life. I guess you're just harder to kill then most humans, hmm? Anyway, let's continue. Being a malvadon isn't exactly the most interesting job, but it's what we were created to do. The job has to be done, and I just happen to "lucky" enough to do it. Owning a bookstore? I am sure you already can assume that's a "No." Malvadons are only allowed to bring death to people nothing more. And as for my age, I'm only 216. An adolescence by human standards."

"Would you like to own one? I mean... I used to own one, before I got involved with the criminal underground of this city. They destroyed it, burned my funds... stuck me in that crappy apartment, and here I am. Talking to a Malvadon about his life, and how hard I am to kill." About this moment, a psychiatric doctor walked in, followed by the nurse from earlier. Rick quickly shook his head at Matthew to warn him -not- to kill the doctor who had come in to talk to him about his 'mental condition'.

"Heya Doc, what cha need?" Rick put his hands behind his head and smirked, watching the doctor sit down by his bed.

"Is everything alright son?" The elderly doctor asked
"Why yes, everything is fine..." Rick nodded, eying the doctor as he stood up,
"Well, I'm going to just have the nurse put this medicine in your IV to help you feel a bit better." He winked at Rick, a smug grin on his face.

Rick quickly looked to Matthew and pointed at the doctor, mouthing a silent, 'I don't trust him.'

That was all the initiative Matthew needed. In a split second, he had flown towards the psychiatric doctor, his hand touching the man's shoulder. However, the man did not die just yet. Matthew then nodded towards Rick.

"The moment you need me to kill him, just say the command. I can kill the nurse if you want too."

Matthew found an unusual pleasure in his new job. Despite the fact that he was still killing people off for a living, he found it far more exciting, more free. It was at this exact moment that Matthew knew that things would certainly be entertaining in his new life in the human world.

Rick watched as the doctor walked over to the IV, he pulled out a needle filled with nothing but air; Rick had seen this before, to many times he had to do the same thing. An air bubble in the veins, a quick and painful death if done right. "Do it now!" Rick yelled it, startling the doctor into dropping the syringe, and causing the nurse who had fallen asleep in one of the chairs to be startled awake. The doctor bent down out of Matthew's grasp to pick up the syringe; Rick hoped Matthew would hurry up and kill the man.

"Finally!" Matthew said as he slammed his open palm onto the psychologist's back with all of his force and speed.

Within seconds the elderly man let out a terrible groan, and his head slumped downward. Eventually, the man's body collapses onto the ground, the death seemed to have taken place like an accident. There would be no evidence to any criminal action; the psychological doctor, possibly due to the stressful nature of his work, had simply died of an unexpected heart attack.

Matthew grinned in interest towards his accomplishment. It was the first time he had found interest in his job. He then placed his thumb out and pointed at the nurse, waiting patiently for the confirmation for him to kill her or not.

Rick's eyes drifted to the nurse who had ran over to the doctor, before calling for medical attention for the suspected cause of death; a heart attack. Rick smiled grimly as he laid back again, looking up at Matthew, "Yep, better to get her to, don't cha think?"

The nurse, at that moment, looked at Rick; she was also an elderly woman who was probably involved with the psychiatric doctor, backed up against the wall. As if, she were afraid that whatever he said could get her killed, and all Rick did was look away. "She came in with that murderer, she might as well leave with him." His voice was filled with regret, but they both had to die. When Matthew would kill her, he would call for a doctor to check the two out; be moved to another room. And then leave in the morning and go by a fresh-food market for Matthew's sake.

Matthew, without much more than a single step forward, brought his hand over the nurse's mouth from the back, as if he was going to suffocate her. Instantly, she fell to the ground along with the psychologist, and it were there lay two dead bodies on the floor of the hospital room. Interestingly enough, the area of their bodies Matthew touched seemed to influence how the two died; while the psychologist died merely of a heart attack, the nurse would soon be identified as having suffocated herself. It all came together to paint a scene. As the psychologist, in the demanding profession of a doctor, began to died from a heart attack, the nurse, unable to deal with the horrible tragedy taking place in front of her, commits suicide by suffocating herself with the window drapes.

Rick had called the doctor, which would arrive in a few minutes. "So you can create the scenario of death for each person you touch? Wait! You touched that lady in the alley! What would of happened if I intervened by shooting her, or carrying her to the hospital? Would you have been fired?" Rick was on his feet by now, gently taking the Iv with him to stand by Matthew while the doctor came in and called someone to take the bodies down to the morgue for an autopsy, before looking at Rick.

"You're being moved to a new room, this room will become a crime scene; I'd stay here for the night, but the other option is to go home and risk a call from the police." The doctor stated this in an orderly fashion.
"I'll go home, sir." Rick responded, looking to the iv in his left arm.
"Then I'll call in a nurse to remove your IV, and to take you to the registration desk to sign out, we'll mail you your bill." The doctor nodded and walked out of the room.

"Oh, by the way Matthew... They're called Doctors."

"Huh, well that's odd. Why would they be called doctors? That doesn't sound like a healer at all."

As they waited for papers to sign at the registration desk, Matthew then began to explain the nature of how his abilities work.

"Basically, I can recreate any sort of injury someone can obtain, by touching a certain part of their body and thinking about how I desire them to die. That is why if you would have shot the woman or taken her to the hospital, then she wouldn't have died from a stabbing wound, but rather by the bullet of a gun. As a result, the people in charge of the "Web of Life" as they call it, would be pretty pissed off because they would have to redo all of their work because you decided to play the hero. Of course, I wouldn't have been fired, since that could hardly be thought of as a punishment. Instead, I would have received a punishment such as being chained to a tree while being lashed with a whip repeatedly for two years. Depends on the mood of the council."

"Heh, glad I didn't interfere then. I wouldn't have anyone to talk to while under suspicion of MURDER." He said this loud enough so only Matthew could hear, eventually he received the o-k to be released, and his iv was removed before he was escorted out of the hospital after putting a clean, starch white shirt on. "Alright mister Matthew, where to? I don't think my home is exactly the safest place right now... Oh wait, I know, how do you feel like killing again; I have a few ties to cut so I can be free again. Even if it'll take some hunting..."

"Killing? My speciality. Well, at this point I think it would be wise to give you one last thing to help you out. A little item you may find rather useful, if you use it properly."

From Matthew's coat pocket emerged a black cellphone, looking similar to that of a Razor. He placed it within Rick's palm, and at that point it became an object of the real world, solid and completely visible.

"This is my obitphone, similar to a cellphone in your world. However, this is no ordinary cellphone. Within it contains all of the messages I receive detailing all the deaths I have to carry out. Additionally, you may also write messages and send them to other Malvadons or even yourself. When you do, it will show the message, and by pressing the circular button just below the screen you will see a map that shows the position of your obitphone and your target, as well as others who have obitphones. Sort of a way of keeping in touch with other Malvadons in case things go awry. I even was lucky enough to test out the new Dirge, now with unlimited texting, enhanced visuals, and the option of downloading music from oTunes!"

Rick twitched for a moment, looking up at Matthew. "O... Tunes? What the hell are Otunes?! Anyway..." Rick turned to the phone and began writing a messaged; sending it to himself as a though of revenge crossed his mind. The phone received it and he looked at the message before he opened the map, a smug grin on his face.

The message read:
Jacob Oran
Died of a drug overdose.
2:34 am.

"Like this? I hope I got it right..." Rick showed the messaged and map to Matthew, hoping Matthew would have some sense to carry it out; or at least tell him what to fix on the message. He didn't want something to happen to Matthew, otherwise his plan for revenge on the gang who forced him into this life would never be completed.

"Your method will work for our purposes, since the cellphone automatically looks up the name of the person and tracks their whereabouts. However, for later reference, messages sent by the people upstairs look something like this."

Matthiew showed Rick his own message of death, detailing the format that was common to Malvadons.

3:34 P.M. Rick Glick. Dies from the bullet from a rival gang member while standing in front of his apartment window.

"With this format, you can send this message to other Malvadons, and who knows, one of them might not notice who sent it and simply kill the person. But for now, lets just stick with finding this Jacob Oran person. Drug overdose, right?"

Matthew flexed his fingers as he prepared for another job. He was already starting to like this Rick Glick character and his style. There was no doubt in Matthew's mind; his life was about to become far more entertaining than it had been all of his monotonous life, and intended to keep it that way for a long, long while.

"The man who started it all, Jacob Oran, he used to be my friend but got caught up in dealing drugs... And the crime ring he eventually used to black mail me. He should be at his house at this hour, let's pay a late night visit... And deal death to him the way he did to my father last year." A malicious grin spread across Rick's face as he looked back at Matthew, before walking towards the streets, "Let's hail a cab and make this look as inauspiciousness as possible, let me talk to him awhile before you deal the final touch of his life."

Rick slowly raised a hand in the air as a taxi drove by and stopped, rolling down the window he looked up at Rick. "Taxi fare is doubled every night past midnight, sure you don't want to walk?" Rick smirked and looked around, "Well Matthew, Taxi or walk? Doesn't matter to me."

The taxi driver was giving Rick a suspicious look as he talked to what seemed to be thin air.

"Well, we could always take the taxi. Who knows, perhaps something unexpected will happen the driver before we have time to give him the fare?"

Matthew couldn't help but let out a light chuckle, his lips curling up into a wide grin. Matthew sat down onto back seat of the taxi car, finding it rather exciting to be within such an interesting device. He hardly understood what a taxi did besides move people from one place to another, but was certainly still interested in how it worked.

"By the way, don't you think people will start thinking you're crazy or something? Perhaps you shouldn't talk so much to "yourself" in public."

"We're in glass city, it's filled with wackos. Besides, how else would I be able to speak with you?" Rick climbed into the taxi and sat next to Matthew, closing the door and the little shutter on the window between the driver and the customer for a moment so he could talk to Matthew without the cab driver over hearing them. "Alright, so, I'm telling you my plan for the full run of it. You will help me, by killing every member of the gang who did this to me, so I may live free of my debt. And then I will do whatever it is you ask of me." Rick crossed his arms at his chest, a smug grin on his face as he looked to the chain connecting him to Matthew. "And yes, perhaps something sudden will happen to our driver once we reach our destination..."

"Whatever I ask? Well, then this really will be entertaining."

Matthew found the taxi drive rather enjoyable; it saved a trip having to fly on wings. However, he was also interested in the fact that Rick was different than other masters; he was much more ready to talk, and seemed to receive Matthew as an equal. This was an advantage he would have to use readily, seeing as he wasn't about to have the human do something foolish and get himself killed. Otherwise, he would have to wait for another master in order to have his fun.

Yet, there was something that bothered him during their taxi ride. The other Malvadons would surely grow suspecious of his absence; and would desire to investigate. If that were to happen, chaos may very well arise in Aether, and Matthew would be the center of it. Regardless, he was at the moment relaxed, not to mentioned content with this latest development.

"However, killing off only these people who have given you a hard time seems to be a rather underuse of my abilities, don't you agree? Perhaps you should expand outward; kill those who would make you life as easy as possible. Might as well enjoy this life while you can, right?"

"The people who caused my life to be like this, are only the first step. Then there are the rest of the criminals in Glass City, hundreds of them that cause peoples lives to go by horribly. Like the woman in the alley, like my daughter and wife, who were shot." The taxi stopped at the apartment, Jacob Oran's apartment. "Room 5, floor 3." Rick had got out of the Taxi and looked back at the driver, he was starting to enjoy this, looking at the name plate on the dash board as he was asked to pay his eyes went back to 'Bud', which was all that was named on the nameplate. "Mister 'Bud' died of a stroke at 2:30am, outside of Jacob Oran's apartment.

The Taxi driver looked at him weird, the time was 2:29, when it hit 2:30 Rick motioned at Matthew to finish him off in the way he mentioned.
