Devils of Zenshima ( )

Postby Matt on Sat Jul 12, 2008 12:20 pm

It was meant for a greater calling. It was built to be the largest, most welcoming city in the world. It was Zenshima, also known as The City of Glass, a newly developed location created for the sole purpose of making life as enjoyable as possible. It was designed to never be contaminated with the filth of normal city, and the air prevailent throughout the city as fresh as the open prairies of the West. Built within the hub of Europe, Glass City was to become the first ever utopia of the future. However, not everything is as it plans to be.

With the coming of the wealthiest of all people from all corners of the continent, so comes those who wish to take from their prosperity. In only a few short years, Glass City had become the center of the most notorous gangs in Europe, and thus has become the most dangerous place on Earth. On a daily basis, those returning to their cars must check around the area beneath said vehicle, as to avoid having a criminal slice the Achilles tendon in their leg, and leave them open for theft and possibly death. As a result, deaths have become more and more common, and those who manage death for a living must come and deal with the faults caused by the mortals of Glass City.

Species

Human: Such a peculiar race humans are. Though given optimal ability in thought, sheer emotion seems to govern much of their lives. Given a destined time of death, humans must live, unlike lesser beings, with full knowledge of their mortality. They know, without a shadow of a doubt, that they will die, but not the hour.

Benvolion: The species of life. Benvolions are the grip of an infant's finger; the small ounce of life given at birth. The moment a child has been born, a benvolions bestowed upon the child life by their divine touch, and wisk away on their snow white wings to Aether, also known as "heaven" by humans, and live pampered lives along with the humans who have shown enough goodness to enjoy its paradise. Interestingly enough, a Benvolion may also bring back the dead with their touch. While benevodons are invisible to the naked eye of a human, it is possible to see one if they choose to become tangible. However, this is a rarity in itself, as the only need to be visible in the mortal world when using human commotities. Coincidently, the lifestyle of humans is considered enticingly interesting towards benvolions.

Malvadon: Given the persona of Death. Rather than the use of a scythe, the mere touch of a malvadon does the job of killing a human when the time arises. Once their missions are completely, malvadons returned to the Aether on jet black wings, yet do not enjoy the freedom of paradise along with the benevodons or the humans. Instead, they are imprisioned in cages suspended from the ground near the edge of Aether and out of plain sight, let out only after recieving the task of bring death to a human. Furthermore, the touch of Benevodon can cause immense agony towards a malvadon, and is generally use as a form of punishment for unruly death bringers. Like benvolions, they possess a great passion for human life, and the same rules apply within the human world.

Helvadon: Once residents of heaven themselves, a helvadon are the result of a malvadon who has gone against the rules of Aether. Their wings have been torn from their bodies, leaving two circular scars on their back, and their abilities are taken away, along with their immortality. A helvadon begins to live the life of a human from then on, with full memory of their previous life. Unexpectingly, the removal of their wings has ignited the ability to manipulate fire within their surroundings, though no other strange abilities have been noticed as of the moment. Additionally, once a helvadon perished, their soul descends into the Abyss, where it is given the right to torture the foul humans who reside their.

Name: Matthew
Age: 216
Species: Malvadon
Biography: Though still a young Malvadon of Aether, Matthew knows well of how the system of things works. Like all Malvadons, he was spawned from the death of a human, and as such never had parents. From birth he was trained along with other Malvadons of his generation for the sole purpose of bring death to humans, and experience has made him unfeeling towards his job. However, there have been rumors recently that he has spent longer and longer hours in the human world, no doubt as a method of escaping his imprisionment in Aether.
Appearance:
Image

Matthew sits upon the edge of a skyscraper, staring down upon those beneath him with his terrible black eyes. His face lacks much emotion and remains cold and unfeeling as he adjusts the tie of his black suit, the uniform of all malvadons. upon hearing a rendition of the funeral march, he instantly reaches for what appears to be a cellphone, the sound playing before acting as its ring tone. Yet, this is not an ordinary cellphone, for not only is it capable of receiving calls, but also messages of death.

As he glances upon the specifications, he sighs as his black wings unfold languidly. Closing his cellphone, Matthew stands upon the edge, and allows himself to fall from the skyscraper. As the air blows across his face while he falls to the ground below, Matthew swoops upward and begins to flap his wings at a quick place, the rate slowing down progressively until it settles upon a stable speed. At which point, he continues on his pursuit, searching for the last victim for the day, and dreading the return to his unliberating cage.

Re: Devils of Zenshima ( )

Whilst Matthew's actions remained unnoticed by the masses of Zenshima, the monotonous routine replayed itself as it did every afternoon of everyday. The streets grew crowded as teenagers were let out of school and adults walked home after a long day of work. Yet, while at a distance everyone seem like that of a normal city, it simply was not so. In the middle of town was a colossal plasma television, which perpetually played the news of the day. There, humans watched while suspects of murders, information on gangs, and other such horrific deeds were mentioned, meanwhile everyone merely nodded knowingly. It was all too usual, too common to break away the emotionless barrier the humans of the city had placed around themselves.

In this duration, there was ironically a foul act was occurring underneath their noses. A women lay face-up upon the ground of a secluded alley, tears flowing from her eyes as she looked down towards her body. Blood. Blood had drenched her clothing as she recalled the events which took place only moments ago. As she did so, Matthew began to lose speed and descend as he reached the alley, his feet lightly touching the ground. Drawing closer towards the women, Matthew flipped open his phone to view the message once more, though he had not forgotten it.

"2:30 P.M. Laura McMaster. Dies from severe torso wound after being stabbed twice by a mugger." Matthew stated with a light sigh. It did not matter that he spoke, for she could not hear him and she was to die soon anyway. "How tragic; I would feel sorry for her if I had not seen this before."

Matthew, after withdrawing his phone, continued to grow closer and closer towards the woman, who simply seemed to have "death" written across her face. As he reached out his hand, preparing to kill her with the gentle touch of his palm, the women let out a terrifying scream, which made him jump back a foot in suprise. Her screeching wails could be heard from the sidewalk, an obvious cry for help, though no one paid much attention.

[[Hope this is alright Matt.]]
Name: Ryan Glick

Age: 29
Species: human
Biography:
Ryan is at the least to say, a member of a gang in Zenshima, the Glass City. But it wasn’t by choice he received this path in life, he was forced into it by a large debt owed to the people he worked for now. Before he became a member of an organization of criminals, Ryan was a bookstore keeper, also a studier of the occult. He eventually got into illegal gambling, racking up huge losses occurring in his bookstore being terminated and his studies deemed null-in-void.

Ryan often questions his mortality after living through several cases of being shot, stabbed, or drugged. Although he know he will die some day he still questions whether or not it will be from a physical wound, or something more malicious such as time.

Appearance:

Ryan stands at a 6’ 2’’ height, and is often considered underweight. His shoulder-length hair is died a jet black, and he doesn’t care to style it in any way or form. His bangs are long and hang half-way over his hazel eyes. He often wears a white t-shirt with a black over shirt that is never buttoned up; preferring to wear it as if it were windbreaker. He wears a gold wedding band on his left hand even though his wife died several years ago in a freak accident, he also wears a strange looking necklace his mother wore before she died. He wears denim jeans with black and white trainers. He doesn’t look to formal, and he prefers it that way.

---
It was a quiet day for Ryan, to say the least. He hardly had to do anything but scout out a few people to rob, find some cars to steal. Usually he just went around and was forced to shoot people or stab them in an alley, something he despised doing. Then he heard the scream for help, no one around him seemed to care that a lady was laying there, bleeding to death in an alley-way.

Maybe he should help, risk capture by the police if he ever left behind fingerprints on something from a killing. But this lady was dying, and in obvious pain; so he had a few options. Take the cellphone, call the ambulance, or take the gun he hid under his shirt and end her pain here and now. The second option didn't appeal to him, but by the time the ambulance arrived she would be dead anyway.

Slowly he walked into the alley and pulled the gun out with a trembling hand, unable to look at her he just backed away and collapsed against a wall, the gun laying beside him as he just stared up at the sky and ignored the woman's screams for help. "What do I do.... What do I do?"

Matthew looked over towards the newcomer of the alley, Rick. He was shocked that he was holding a gun, and looked from Rick to the lady several times.

"This wasn't part of the message. Damn it! If he tries to kill her the specifications will be completely false! I have to act quickly."

Matthew, before thinking about the situation, attempted to swipe the gun from Rick's hand, forgetting that he was intangible. He swore as his hand phased through the weapon.

"I can't deal with this right now. I'll have to kill her right now.

The malvadon silently stepped closer towards the woman, though his extra precautions were unnecessary while intangible. He then placed his hand gently on her cheek, and suddenly her face grew pale and deathly. The deed had been done. Matthew knew that his actions would be noticed by the mortal, however he had to finish his task before things would grow difficult. However, there was then the task of dealing with the human, whose free will may taint the lady's body.

The man rose to his feet and grabbed the gun off the ground, looking to the lady he blinked; noticing her death was rather swift and painless. "Well, time to call the ambulance... Or mortuary, and then get out of here to avoid being suspected of murder... Why is my life so difficult?" He hastily hid the gun again, pulling out a black cellphone; dialing the police he stated were the body was, what had happened, and the usual things. He then stuffed the cell phone away and walked calmly out of the alley, casting a glance back at the lady, "I'm glad I'm not that person." He shook his head slowly and looked around, figuring it might be time to go home.

But he felt something cold against his skin; colder than the gun usually was. ~That's strange, must have gotten colder, oh well.~ Ryan shrugged and started walking towards his apartment, not really caring if there was now a cop car driving very close to him from behind. He might have to kill them, was the only thought that crossed his mind.

Matthew sighed with relief as the other human departed from the alley, and he soon followed suit. As he reached the sidewalk, however, his cellphone began to ring that familar funeral march which signified death. Matthew flipped open his cellphone, and began to read aloud the message.

"3:34 P.M. Rick Glick. Dies from the bullet from a rival gang member while standing in front of his apartment window."

He looked over towards the human who was returning home, noticing that it was indefinitely the same person who had pulled a gun to remove the woman from her misery.

"Coincidence, perhaps? Odd how things work. At any rate, it makes my job a lot less complicated."

Matthew drove himself into the air, and soared just a few feet about Rick. This malvadon for one detested having to wait for a kill, and loathed this job in particular since it required him to simply watch a human for almost an entire hour. Yet, he did not complain, as eventually his problem before would be solved with the touch of his hand.

Something felt odd, just, not right as if he was being watched. He stopped in front of the apartment complex he lived in and looked up to the second story; his house stood quiet and calm. "Maybe..." He shook his head slowly and continued to walk, something just wasn't right about today and he just felt that familar cold touch to the air. "Those years of studying the occult have messed with your head, nothing is going to happen; pull yourself together man..." His eyes drifted behind him, then up; nothing was there, paranoia was all he assumed.

But all he knew, was that he needed to avoid his apartment, but he had to get something so he turned around and went back. Slowly he climbed the stairs and opened the door to his apartment and went in to stand in front of the window; the clock read 3:00pm. 30 minutes after he found that woman, and watched her die a strange death. Wounds like that would of caused a slow, painful death, but she died quickly... And now he felt as if he was being watched. Slowly he turned around and looked at the clock that read 3:03, the man shook he head slowly and went to sit down on the couch, slowly he fell asleep.

It was 30 minutes later when he woke up, he couldn't shake the feeling someone was waiting for him to die. He walked to the bathroom and turned the water on before splashing his face with the cold, still running water; the clock ticked to 3:34... The window shattered from a shot, but Rick stood there, watching as a man from a rival gang walked up; and before he could react the gang member shot him... The clock ticking to 3:36.

He laid there, as the gang member walked off, clutching his stomach with his eyes on the ceiling, "Damn... Looks like I'm not lucky... this time..."

"All is as it plans to be." Said a voice, one that was so grave and cold that it felt as though it could freeze the air.

Matthew looked down upon the human, his red eyes glaring at the human with distain. The Malvadon was reluctant to return back to the world of Benevolions and Malvadons, the world that shackled him to a fate he despised. It hoped he could make his experience in the human world today as long as possible. As it happened, while he looked down on the human, who at the moment was unable to see him, Matthew noticed something in the corner of his eye. As he looked towards it, the object had a redness like that of blood, yet look far more appealing then that. It was a small basket of fruit, let out on a kitchen counter. Though the accomidations of the home were shabby and to say the least unattractive, the fruit caught Matthew's eye with interest.

The malvadon looked back towards Rick, and then towards the bowl of fruit again. Suddenly, Matthew made his presence known, proceeding to allow his plan into action. He took grip of the handle of the fruit basket, and stepped closer towards Rick. Matthew tossed an apple in the air several times before finally taking a large bite out of it. He proceeded to devour the entire apple within mere moments, and grinned with satisfaction. However, in a flash his mood had returned to absolute seriousness, and he looked down towards Rick, staring at him with his bright red eyes.

"Hello. Rick Glick, correct? Nice to meet you."

His eyes widened in fear? No, it wasn't fear, it was curiosity that had sparked in his eyes, "Who the hell are you, and were did you come from? Bah! Never mind that, get someone on the damn phone; I need medical attention can't you see that?!" His voice was pained as he clutched his stomach, the bullet would end up not being fatal; it missed the major artery and organs by about 1 inch, lucky call. He slowly stood himself up by holding onto the counter, there was some blood on the floor, and coming from his hand; but he seemed to be slightly stable now.

"And would you put that basket down?" Rick had reached his free hand out and grabbed the basket, glaring into the mans red eyes. "It's not yours, and it's considered polite to ask before eating someone else's food." Suddenly he coughed and backed off a little, collapsing against the counter. "Damn it... It hurts."

Matthew sighed as he watched the human's attempt to keep himself balance, finding it futile to begin with. However, this particular mortal would find himself having far greater than a "lucky call" on his hands. Matthew drew closer towards Rick, and took a single strawberry from the basket, almost as a method of mocking the man.

"And I am sure it is considered polite if a malvadon allows you to live, instead of being hurled into the Abyss, yes?" Matthew stated as he placed the strawberry in his mouth. "These fruits are truely the best of them. What are they called again? Strawberries?"

He then turned to focus on Rick once more though occassionally eyeing the basket of fruit in his hand. His red eyes were his most prominent feature, which seem to stare into one's soul.

~Malvadon...~ Rick's eyes traveled to look at Matthew, a smug grin across his face. "So you are real, the death bringers." He slowly stood up and walked towards Matthew, "So if I touch you..." He suddenly smirked as he drew a hand back. "You'd have to serve me, is that correct? Or did those books about the occult and unseen lie? You tell me, mister Malvadon, or are you pulling my leg and playing with my mind to make killing me more enjoyable?!" He shouted at him, eyes narrowed in anger.

"I'm sure though, I'll find out..." He quickly stepped forward in an attempt to place a hand on Matthew, even if it risked making his wound worse he still did it, still tried to touch the man in front of him. While he was doing this he nodded, "And yes, they're known as strawberries." Hopefully the hand would make contact with Matthew, just so he was sure he wouldn't die.

As the hand traveled towards Matthew, his eyes widened in suprise. This was it. This was his passage to escape from the world above. But, was it what he truely wanted? Did he desire to serve a mere human for the rest of the mortal's days, or would he rather stay safely tucked away in his cage, living by the rules of the Aether. He only had a second to react, however it seemed to feel like an eternity.

What should I do? Matthew asked himself in thought. I could catch his hand, it shouldn't be too difficult. And then he would die. I wouldn't have to serve a putrid human. But, what would the fun be in that? I would just return into that damn cage, looking down as the Benvolions enjoy their immortality, while I rot in isolation for all eternity. Maybe this is what I have been searching for, all of this time. Perhaps this can finally free me from imprisonment for a while. I've been afraid; afraid of trying out something new. This may be just what I'm looking for. However...

Matthew swiftly drew his body back, allowing Rick's hand to swipe the clean air. Matthew adjusted his collar as he grinned devilishly. If he was to do this, he decided it would be by his own move, not a human's.

There's no way I'm letting a filthy human think he had the upper hand. Though, He and I are very much the same. We are both trapped by the will of others, like lab mice. Hopefully, all of that is about to change.

Matthew then placed his hand out towards Rick, gesturing the human to shake his hand.

"I came here to make you a proposition. You seem to know very much about my kind; you would make an excellent master. All I require from you is..."

The malvadon chuckled a bit as he thought of his purpose for doing such an absurd task as serving a human.

"You make our time together as entertaining as possible."

"Fine, it's a deal." Rick reached a hand out and shook the malvadon's, suddenly wondering if he would fall over dead or stay standing. And master of someone? That seemed kind of cliche' to this era, and what did Malvadon's like to do for fun, eat fruit, watch t.v.? He wouldn't treat this man like he was a servant though, seeing as he spared his life to be free of whatever their previous masters were called, after all; he finally had a way out of this life of his, perhaps he could use this man to his advantage.

"Well, now that... I shook your hand, whatever importance that had, can I go to the hospital for this bullet now?" Rick studied Matthew for a moment, hand going back to his stomach with a grimace of pain.

Oh great, how do I explain someone following me around dressed like this guy? This is going to be difficult to explain at the hospital... Or to anyone who comes to my house, I just hope he knows something about how this world works...

"Hospital? What the hell is a-"

Suddenly, the malvadon began to wince in pain as he clutched his throat. A black collar began to form around his neck, a symbol of his service towards the human. Several moments later, Matthew removed his hands from his throat, the pain draining away from his body. He was now a part of the human world, and as such would be unable to return to Aether until dismissed from his duties, though he seemed just fine with that.

"Alright, now since that is over with, I'll take you to this hospital or whatever it is called. I'll just need the directions. Hang on tight."

Without another word of explanation on his part, Matthew embraced Rick and carried him towards the window, unveiling his wings to the light of the afternoon sun. He placed his footing onto the railing, and allowed himself to fall towards the ground below, until finally allowing his wings to take their role, and flap with tremendous might as the two of them soared high into the sky, treading above the clouds.

After several wrong turns and moments of bickering back and forth, Matthew and Rick found themselves arriving at the hospital gates. A nurse, who was at the moment taking her break, noticed Rick's wounded body hailing at the entrance of the hospital, and as such dropped her paper lunch bag and carried him within the hospital. Yelling towards her fellow colleages to bring in a stretcher, she accompanied the doctors who hurried Rick to a hospital room, and immediately calling upon the anesthesiologist to put Rick to sleep to continue onto the surgery. However, the last thing that Rick saw before he became unconscious was not the doctors, but instead Matthew looking down at him with those cold, red eyes.

Hours later, the anesthesia was finally wearing off. Rick was properly bandaged with white gauze around his torso, and his bloody shirt lay on the table beside the hospital bed, being replaced with a loose patient shirt. Matthew was sitting upon a chair next to the bed, awaiting for his new master to finally awaken. Curiously enough, there was a very long, possibly 15 feet, silver chain which was attached from Matthew's collar to a band that was fastened to Rick's wrist.

Rick slowly sat up in the bed with a yawn, rubbing his eyes without the smallest glance at Matthew; thinking it was all a dream. But then he heard the rustle of the chain which caused his gaze to turn on the man, quizzically he stared for a moment, noting the collar and the chain. "What? Are you some kind of dog now? And stop joking around... This probably looks weird to the nurse." He waved his hand towards the nurse checking his stats, and asking what he wanted for his dinner, he just shook his head with a silent 'I'm not hungry.'

"Hey, Matthew, I have an interesting question..." He studied the nurse; who stared back at him with a worried glance, "Please tell me they can see you, or I'm not going crazy... Because if I am... I don't want to be in a hospital anymore."

Matthew, not exactly knowing what to say, tried a hand at the truth, which seemed to be the only option at this point.

"Well... you're not crazy."

Matthew then stood from his chair, and playfully placed his hand through the nurse's back, making it appear to be coming out of the nurse's stomach.

"Only you, along with anyone other human lucky enough to have a malvadon at their command, can see or hear me. Also, the chain is not an option; exactly 5 minutes after a malvadon becomes the servant of a human, a chain exactly 15 feet long manifests from the malvadon's collar to the wrist of their owner's recessive hand, in order to allow the human to have greater control of the malvadon by jerking on the collar. So yes, in essence, I am very similar to a dog."

He then removed his hand from the nurse's body, and then walked closer towards Rick's hospital bed.

"By the way. My powers as "Death," I believe you humans call me, will no longer work unless you give me a verbal command to do so. For example..."

Matthew placed his hand on Rick's forehead, demonstrating his inability to cause death by touch.

"I can not kill you unless you give me permission to do so. After you give me a command, I have still have the free will to not kill that person. However, at any time that I do no cooperate, you may simply tear off my collar from my neck, and then puff! No more Malvadon. I simply stop existing. Not exactly a pleasant fate, yes?"

Matthew pulled back his hand, and allowed time for the human to absorb all of this information.

"Any more questions?"
