He was caught unawares by Ivy's sudden question. A million different thoughts flooded his head in that moment, just like anything that reminds one of something forgotten. It was surprising how fast the surprise spread through him, but he tried his best to be as calm as possible. He let go of his inhibitions a bit and deeply exhaled before getting a good look at her. She'd been found out. He was certain that she was. Any time now, the regret of joining her and associating with her would've overwhelmed him, but it didn't. He deflected the blows. All he could utter were a few words.

"I wouldn't care," he said with an exhale, trying his best to hold on to whatever honesty he had left in him before he resorted to telling lies. He figured, why be so dishonest with one's self? "What did they do to you?" His tone reflected his curiosity, and his knowledge of what happened. All he needed were details. Minute details to pass onto others.

No problemoo! :o)

Ivy didn’t watch Victor as they lapsed into a brief silence after her question. She didn’t dare in fear of what she might find. What if this was it for her? He wouldn’t really hand her over would he? No he wouldn’t. But there was the slight, sliver of a possibility that he might and that was enough to set her heart off hammering at twice its normal rate.
You see, Ivy was positive that he knew what she was getting at. After all, it wasn’t rocket science was it? And if the fear in her eyes didn’t hand him a clue on a dinner plate then she wasn’t sure what would.
Now though, she had to wait for his answer.

Needless to say that when it came it was nothing less than a surprise and she visibly let go of the breath that she hadn’t realized she was holding, then rather shakily met his gaze as she scooted up so that her shoulder sat against his knee.
“But why wouldn’t you care?” She asked innocently with a frown, as if his words somehow confused her, or as if she couldn’t quite register his honesty. Because his answer was what she’d least been expecting if she was truthful with herself. Now she just had to understand it.

At his next question however, the brunette reached into her pocket and placed the small envelope on Victor’s knee without saying a word until at least two minutes had past.
“Looks like they wanna play,” she murmured quietly, running a hand through her layers so that they stuck up like twigs in a bramble hedge. “If it was Them that sent it, of course.”

"It would be hard to get people to change their minds about things but... Now that someone knows, word will probably spread to others as well. Challenge them to challenge their beliefs. And I would not care if I died. At least I left a mark in people's hearts. It does not matter if they have been sent to 101. The seed of doubt is all one could ever need. It grows with enough encouragement. They will find out soon enough."

He took the envelope in his hands when she'd placed it on his knee and opened it to find that note. I know. For a minute there, he had been scared too, but that feeling of unease melted away with the assurance that this was going to be alright. He felt oddly positive in spite of his usually dismal behavior. Whether it was an improvement or a declination was something for fate to decide.

Then suddenly, he held back. He could say nothing. He just held the letter in his hands.

"I will try to figure out who sent this," he said.

Ivy listened to Victor's words with intent, her blue eyes wide with something like wonder. He was right of course - there was no reason to be scared. If they died, they died, but at least they knew that someone else knew about them. There existence would never be completely vaporized, how could it be? When someone else was in on the game?

And suddenly Ivy felt better.

Victor had only given her a few words but already her tense shoulders had slumped out of relaxation, to know that her own burden had been lifted and with an ease she'd never really believed existed anymore. When he stated that he'd try to find who the note was from however, the brunette could only sigh.
"You're right of course," she said slowly, "But why waste your time, Victor? You might never find them, especially if they're a part of... well, you know. And you'll only put yourself at a higher risk of being found out." As Ivy tried to be nonchalant about her words though, she couldn't hide the hint of worry in her voice that even she detected, without any real understanding of why it was there.

"We should just enjoy this for as long as we can, don't you think?" But the smile didn't quite reach Ivy's eyes as she turned them on Victor, a sudden feeling of being out of her depth creeping icily up her spine. Yet despite this, she didn't hesitate on leaning her chin atop his knee, as if everything was how it had been the day before.

"So, how was your day at work?"

"They can have me all they want," he said, turning to Ivy with a childish smile creeping up his face. "But I guess you're right. We will have to go deeper into it before we can actually make a mark on these people. It does entail great effort to do so, after all."
It seemed that today was a little more enjoyable. He knew he was against being with her all this time, but the excitement proved to be something new. Today, however, Ivy seemed mellower. He couldn't shake the feeling that he wanted something more than Ivy giving in. He wanted her to resist. It was what gave her that spark; that excitement that he'd longed for all of his life. As she lay her chin on his knee, his previous thoughts had disappeared. Nothing had really changed, after all. She was still trying to make him give in. Might as well play along again; hopefully any feeling of annoyance he had toward her would just go away and be replaced with a happy nonchalance.

"More and more raids everyday," he said blankly. He pulled out the pack of cigarettes from his pocket and lit it, taking a nice, slow drag, feeling the tobacco fill his lungs before he took an equally slow, deep exhale, the smoke forming delicate shapes in the air. "Absolute bullshit."

"Want a smoke?" he said, pulling out a cigarette and pointing it at her.

Ivy simply shook her head when Victor offered her a cigarette, and sighed as she moved and rested the side of her head where her chin had been previously.
"I quit," she stated in a bored tone, examining severely bitten fingernails as though she suddenly hadn't a care in the world. Which was much better than facing up to the fact that she had.
"For something to do, I suppose." This statement however, was quite true. After having made the decision only the morning of the same day that was still running through, Ivy had found that focusing on not smoking took up a tremendous amount of brain activity and allowed her expression to neutralize when she could only try to think up different ways of easing the cravings. A genius idea on her part, she thought bitterly, with a smirk. It was a shame such a mind couldn't be put to better use.

Releasing a low chuckle then though as she stretched her body out like a restless lioness, Ivy eventually decided to get back on topic, as though it was a great chore to do so. It was almost laughable really, how her mood had changed within the short space of time that she'd been sat here. Only moments ago she'd seemed femininely concerned for her new-found friend, but now? Now she seemed nothing less than fed-up with his company. Or at least determined to make that known. It was as if pushing him away after they'd made a break through protected her more thoroughly; she only hoped somewhere inside of him that he might understand and not take such fickle behaviour personally.

"Really?" She asked plainly, as she linked and unlinked her fingers in an agitated fashion. "Seems as though the thought police are getting better and better at their jobs, don't you think? Or is it just that people are becoming more and more suspicious of each other, I wonder."

"You quit?" he said amusedly, as if he'd heard something funny. "Two... Or Three days ago I saw you smoke, and now you quit? How droll. Besides--" he paused for a moment to stretch out a bit, shifting Ivy's position in the process before sitting back up again. "-- nicotine patches are extremely hard to come by, what with the very little market and equally little want to quit burning one's lungs out with a nice, long drag." The following statement caught him unawares. There he went again, the laughs coming up from his throat and into the mildly windy air, a softer laugh that resembled his father's contagious one. Not that anyone knew that, of course.

"The thought of thinkpol like us getting better at our jobs is a dreadful thought," he said, not an ounce of worry in his tone. "Some of them have been breathing down my neck ever since I met you on the sidewalk that day. People are growing too suspicious these days."

Ivy's eyes narrowed at the sound of amusement that was shining through in Victor's voice, and quirked an eyebrow when he chuckled the last of his sentence. It was nice to see him smile, she noted, but didn't mirror his expression out of the sheer fear of why she thought it so brilliant to hear him chuckle.
"It isn't droll," she protested, "It's... sensible. They're bad for you." But with the last part of her statement, the brunette's expression softened into a feminine smirk, when he brought up the small case of nicotine patches.
"They're hard to come by if you haven't got unlimited access to the prole market, yes," she smiled, ignoring how much their current conversation was surfacing her cravings.

However, as their conversation shifted, Ivy's expression soon became marred with worry again and she rounded on Victor with an intensity that scared even herself.
"Then maybe we should leave it for a while before our next meeting. Just... until we know that you're safe I mean." But as she looked away out of embarrassment, she had noticed how uninterested he seemed in his own safety and it kind of bothered her. Bothered her enough so that she'd question it.

"Aren't you worried, Victor?"

"So's the world we live in, but here we are. A pack of cigarettes don't mean anything but battered lungs and a one-way ticket to the hospital. Life can kill you much, much..." he paused for a moment, enjoying the cloud of smoke rushing through his lungs. "...faster. So have a smoke. We'll die, anyway."

The look on her face that followed surprised him greatly. This girl was hard to go through. She had the smuggest of looks when he'd first had a conversation with her that night they first met. That spark in her eyes had disappeared. All he could see now was worry. Genuine worry like all the other pitiful fools in this world they lived in. He couldn't stand to look at her, his gaze shifting quickly to provide at least some excuse. "Leave it?" he said, raising an eyebrow at her sudden show of what he considered to be weakness. "No, we can't just let the dust settle. Not that quick. As you are probably aware, I have no regard for my safety whatsoever. All I need to do is to at least try and help this godforsaken Earth."

He stamped out the fire from whatever was left of the cigarette he had and immediately pulled another one out of his pocket. "We are rebels. You choose to feel the freedom of it, I'm looking for someone who's willing to help. We all have to do the bullshit work that is given to us. We signed up for this. I see no need to turn back now. Yes, we can wait, but we can plan. It's... It's just so hard to figure out how."

Ivy drew her gaze away from Victor as he spoke about what life would do to them. She didn't want to hear it. She knew it of course, but she didn't want it reinforced.
It was strange really, how strong this girl had been during their previous few meetings, what with her sarcastic brick wall that she refused to let anybody penetrate. But something had changed in the last couple of days and she was unsure of what. Once it had been all about rebelling. Now? Something told her that it wasn't, that it was in fact, about so much more.

So, instead of replying to Victor, she instead turned her gaze upon him again when he grew silent and was shocked at what she found in his expression. Was that disgust? Just the faintest of glimmers... right there in his eyes. She had shown weakness, she knew it but his reaction surprised her greatly, and listening to his next words had realization hitting her with the force of a speeding train. She was no longer in control. It was Victor that had taken the reigns, Victor that was leading their rebellion. He needed her. Before, it would have seemed to be the other way around, roles reversed, which raised the question of how did she even begin to get it back again?

After realizing that she was staring at him with her mouth gaped slightly open, the brunette looked away, something like shock in her expression. Well, that had never happened before and she was completely stumped about what to do. Not to mention, the worry was still there. For his safety. But that was only because she needed him to feed her need for danger, wasn't it? So to cover up her doubt, the brunette decided to argue simply against his point.
"But I have regard for my own safety," she countered, standing up and dusting off her shorts before taking a couple of steps towards the edge of the roof. The bench was situated in the middle so that nobody could see them. And sure the church was abandoned, in the middle of nowhere, but if you stood close enough to the edge, people miles away could see. It was a dangerous move, but she kept on getting closer, willing herself to swallow her own fear so that she could make a point. Regain control.

"And I need to know, do you? Because if we're going to continue with this, we need to work as a team. I see what you're saying Victor, I get it. We can't just leave it, not when we're in so deeply. But if this is going to work, I need to know that you're willing to worry about my safety, just as much as I worry about yours. Because if either of us gets captured, it's over. It'll all be over."

"I see," he said, nonchalantly taking a look around as he leisurely took another puff. "But if you're planning to carry on with this, I would suggest you get off that edge. One, you would either suffer multiple broken bones, ruptured organs, concussions, and-or a broken spinal cord, thereby rendering you unable to walk or move. We can't have ourselves in bad shape now, can we? Second, if you continue to walk nearer, what is the entire point of you requiring my help? Would you not want to help drive in our cause and take down the government? Honestly, Ivy, with this behavior, I could have easily mistaken you for someone giving up.

"Now please, come here before I consider pushing you off myself," he joked, the tiniest of laughs escaping as he stamped out his cigarette on the bench. He stood up, reached out a hand to hold hers, and with mild force, took her back to the seat to get back to their... Conversation. As soon as he realized his hand was still locked with hers, he calmly let go to stretch out. He let out a small groan as he stretched out and relaxed, continuing to stare at the sky.

"Perhaps," he said seriously, though it didn't appear so as he appeared as if he was just a woolgathering young school boy. "Perhaps we should look into details. We have to figure out this entire place, every inch of it. Figure out where their weak spot is. But, seeing the situation now, it looks as if there aren't any."

Ivy whipped her head around quite sharply when Victor claimed that it looked like she was giving up. Contrary to his beliefs in that moment, his words alighted a sharp shine of determination in the depths of her eyes that only faded when he took her by the hand and brought her back to the bench. Surprisingly, the girl let him too, but then she knew struggling would have been futile and somewhat childish, given her strength against his.

"I am not giving up," she pouted, bottom lip stuck out like a stubborn child's who didn't want to be taken shopping by her mother. "I was trying to prove a point but you're not aiding me in my quest, Victor," she mumbled through a smirk as she let out a sigh when he stretched yet didn't take her gaze away from his expression. She wondered whether he'd thought she'd actually do what she'd just threatened, or whether he thought it the desperate attempt of someone who'd been weakened by something that was ultimately stronger than what she'd first anticipated.

"They do have a weak spot," the brunette replied eventually, swinging her legs lightly against the bench. "They have us. Their whole purpose is to control every inch of the population but they'll never do it. There's thought criminals arrested every day, for goodness sake." But then something hit Ivy, an idea that had her gripping Victor's hand back into her own with excitement.
"Maybe that's it!" She offered breathlessly. "How many people have I found to join me in my cause over the last few years?... Well, no, scrap that, you don't need to know figures." Was that embarrassment that lit up her usually pale cheeks?
"A lot though, is what I'm saying. Maybe I could find more people like us that way? If there are more of us Victor, do you think we have more of a chance? Or would it make it more dangerous, I wonder?"

Well, it would for her that was for sure, but she wouldn't think of that right now. She couldn't.

Amusement filled him as he heard her reply. It would just be fun to tease this girl, he thought. Maybe unscrew a few screws. "I wholeheartedly dedicate myself to the cause," he said proudly. "But I amuse myself too much. I should be serious. Very, very... Serious." And a few laughs came rolling out again. But as he heard her idea about finding others like them, who had the same mentalities as they did about the government, he couldn't help but agree. Immediately, he became serious. "We have a chance," he said. "Now, there is no safety in numbers, but at least we can all try to make a lasting impression that way."

Ivy only scowled as Victor chuckled away to himself, hiding her unamused eyes behind her fringe for a while until she felt it safe to come out. He was playing with her, she knew that. But why did it bother her so much?

However, as they further discussed their plans and Victor agreed with her point, she couldn't help but smile, despite the fact that she were practically offering herself on a plate as bait. Because if something went wrong with recruiting people in that way she'd be the first to know about it.
"I'll start tomorrow then," she gushed, her grip tightening. "There's this man at work. And he has the look. I'm surprised you thought police haven't clocked him yet. He wears his thoughts practically on his sleeve, and if I can get to him that'll be one more, right?"

But then another thought struck her and the brunette's skinny shoulders deflated somewhat.

"W... What do we do when there's more than two of us though? What then?"

Intently, Victor listened. While Ivy hid her unamusement behind her fringe, he hid the same seriousness and caution he had when he'd first met her under his amusement. "The look? If you can tell, then we must be sorely mistaken about him. However, the matter about letting him in is truly grave indeed. Things we have shared between the two of us should only stay between the two of us. Matters that could possibly be leaked to the government. We cannot have that."

He put a hand of reassurance on her shoulder and pulled away soon after. "We have time. Let us think. For now, let us loathe our surroundings."

It didn't take long for Ivy's excitement to die away, because she realized the absolute truth in Victor's words, which ultimately meant that it was soon touched with a pang of relief that she let out slowly in a long drawn-out breath. If she was honest, the idea of inviting someone new into their little group worried her, almost into a state of fright. She'd only ever dealt with one at once before, never more, and there were all sorts of things that go wrong for them. Her desire for survival was too great to take silly risks like that.
"You're right, I guess," she answered reluctantly jumping at the contact as he rested his hand on her shoulder for a moment.

There was no doubt about it that Victor had surprised her. He'd turned out to be something she hadn't expected, yet here she was still trying to figure out whether that was a good thing or not. There was every chance it could go two ways; the genuine shock of his words sometimes enthralled her, bubbled up a concoction of adrenaline inside of her but then it made him all the more unpredictable, which made him ultimately all the more dangerous.

"When is it that we do anything else?" Ivy murmured in reply to his last sentence, her bright blues casting downwards with a somewhat troubled look. Of course, hating Big Brother would never leave her but sometimes, and these times were very far and few between, she did wish that things were different. That the government just didn't exist. In fact so intense were her desires right then that most of them surfaced in her expression and particularly in the next words she spoke.

"Have you ever been in love, Victor?" She asked quietly as she stared out at the buildings in front of her. "Someone once told me that it was the ultimate betrayal of Big Brother but I've never been able to find it, to know if they spoke the truth or not."

He wouldn't lie -- his companion's comments were amusing him too much. Was their situation sad enough to make everything about it risible? Or was it the opposite? Here they were, musing on things everyone else thought about everyday, but not having a single clue as to how to topple down the government. There were just so many ideas in Victor's head that it probably would've exploded at any moment, but all of them were too risky. He'd decided that maybe now wasn't the time to be thinking about those. Sometime else, when this Ivy were to prove her trustworthiness. How sad, though. He'd never really thought about trusting her.

And there, after that few seconds of silence between the two, the awkward question came tumbling out of her sweet little mouth. He didn't know whether to fight back sobs, burst out laughing, scream in rage not unfamiliar to him or to simply just ignore her question. But then, he had to answer. It was what people back then had considered "politesse". His was... Well, let's just say that his attempts at making polite gestures weren't exactly the best, considering the people around him were practically devoid of any real politeness, and that made it hard for him to emulate that long-desired trait.

"I have," he said, staring out at the distance much like Ivy did, before turning to her and giving her a thousand mile stare. Not that she'd ever notice. "Several times." Again, he reached for another cancer stick, as if declaring nonchalantly his desire to die. "Three wiped out from existence. I was away from the scene, much like you were. It was god awful, but well, nobody knows what god awful is until you've lost something dear to you. Most of them haven't even grown up with anything 'dear'. I doubt they even know what 'dear' means. Or 'precious'. Some left out of fear. One went to Hate Week. Never came back to me after that. Life is full of shit. What we have to face."

Ivy watched the sudden stream of emotions that seemed to flow across Victor's features after she'd asked her question and for a moment let her worry consume her and almost tried to retract. However, before she could, he'd answered with words that surprised her but at the same time drew her in somewhat deeper as she turned that intense blue gaze upon him with a burning desire of interest sparkling somewhere in the depths of her eyes.
"You have?" The brunette asked, her voice only portraying a mild hint of the shock she felt, his voice mingling with hers as he explained it'd happened more than once and the ultimate consequences of it all.

Needless to say that when Victor reached the end of his speech, Ivy's little rose mouth had dropped and she was staring at the man beside her with a new and different look in her eye. It was possible a mixture of respect and awe, for she had not expected Victor to have loved. Having never felt it herself, to be in the presence of someone that had, riled a churning whirlwind of emotions in her stomach, feelings that she was struggling to contain.
"I-I'm sorry that they ended that way," the brunette murmured whilst tugging a hand through her cropped layers, at least twice over. She felt slightly awkward in bringing the subject up now that the words were out of their mouths. She was out of her depth; she knew nothing about it. Yet to know that this thing called love existed gave her some kind of comfort, but then at the same time she truly believed, having never experienced it, that it was merely there to work against big brother. Ivy didn't understand the conventions of the emotion that made people human.

"For the record though," she added gently after a moment, "You'll never get rid of me that easily." And then with a grin that could only be described as cheeky, Ivy bumped his shoulder with her own, attempting to lighten an atmosphere that she'd only just previously brought down.

Over the next few weeks, the expression that had been on Ivy's face that night seemed to be appearing more and more during the time that her and Victor spent together. As much as she was scared to admit, she looked forward to the evenings when they met, when they'd delve into conversations she'd never dreamed of having with another human being. And it hadn't taken her long to realize that what she had with Victor was different than what she'd had with anyone else. They'd all been amateurs in comparison to herself, but Victor? He was more her equal.
So, with the terrifying note she'd received forgotten after no more repeat performances, thoughts of Big Brother and the government seemed to somewhat evaporate in the couple of hours the two spent together and nowadays their conversation involved topics of interest rather than just survival.

On this particular evening though, Ivy had chosen the church roof again as their meeting place, after they hadn't been back here a while and she was sat on the edge but well hidden behind the steeple, with a cone of vanilla ice cream in her hand that she'd acquired previously from the prole market for her and Victor to enjoy over one of their more enlightening conversations.

At her first reaction, he felt surprised, but somehow unsurprised at the same time. He'd expected her surprise at his truly showing that he had humanity in him, however much he had left, but he'd never really seen anyone else's faces light up like that. At the moment, he was thankful to have her to talk to. It just took him miles away from his dreary, ordinary life.

He chuckled through a semi-pained face at her witty reply. "Ah, Ivy. There's more to love than you know. You'll have to find out for yourself."

Over time, he'd come to warm up to
Ivy. She was unlike any girl he'd come to know. She was a smart, cunning young woman with a sense of humor. But she was like any other young woman who was raised in those environs. She didn't know much about being, well, human. To live for Big Brother was all they knew. Somehow, that depressed him more. For now, she would have to do.

He'd finally found a friend. He'd shown a part of his trust to her, something rare in him. But he'd remain vigilant.

"A view of what's inside everyone's heads," he replied honestly. "Starting off with yours." He laughed gently. He hadn't had a fag in hours, but was tempted at the moment to do so.
