"I've gathered you here, my trusted friends, to discuss a venture. None of you know any other, and all of you are in the dark. I'll cut right to the root, as the saying goes, and fill in the details at the outset. By venture I mean adventure, since wanderlust fills my veins.

"Through letters, I have made my dissatisfaction with the Academy clear; I itch for the road. I am tired and bored. The road beckons. Nothing is gained teaching petty scholars the subtle art of spell-craft: I long to try my learning on the world, to test my mettle.

"But first, friends, we must get to know one another. So I propose a toast, several times over. As a prayer to the spirit of Lady Fortune, let's consume spirits."

At this, I whistled to the barmaid, and she brought a bottle of golden liquor, and glasses for everyone at the table. (For I had already passed a fairly large purse of silver to the tavern-keeper.)
