DWC 2011: Lucas Hunter vs. Sir Alexis

"Whoa, boy, whoa! We just got here and already you want to mark everything?" Lucas called out to his faithful hound Percy upon their arrival to the grassy expanse that would soon become soaked in blood. Whether that blood would be his, that of his opponent, or a little of both had yet to be determined, but he had trained day in and day out with the longbow by royal decree for such an event.

Lucas took the time granted by being the first to arrive to get the lay of the land. Off to the east and his right was an increasingly dense forest...it reminded him of home and the terrain that he tracked game over. Off to the west and his left, the terrain got increasingly rough and hilly, with several good spots to set up and fire on his opponent from above. In front of him to the north rose an impressive-looking mountain peak, and the southern reaches behind him smelled of peat moss and swamp gas. Plenty of places to hide there as well, or at least there seemed to be from his limited glances, but he didn't like the limited mobility and visibility offered by that locale.

Setting his equipment down in front of him, Lucas made one last check. His dagger was as clean and sharp as ever, his spear's shaft was fairly sturdy, so there only remained the need to string his bow. Hooking one end of the string to the end of his bow, he strained mightily to bend the yew wood far enough so that the hook at the other end of the curve managed to hold onto the other end of the bow string. The hours of practice he had put into this relatively simple task ended up paying off, and soon he had the finest hand-held ranged weapon ever devised by the servants of the crown. Putting his spear back to a ready position in a holding strap across his back from right shoulder to left hip and the dagger back in its sheath on his right hip, with the quiver of 20 arrows having their fletching poking over his left shoulder, he looked around and noticed that Percy had run off again, relieving himself on one of the nearby conifers. "Percy, heel!" The large dun-colored mongrel of a sheep dog finished its business and promptly ran back to its master, barking loudly as it ran back to acknowledge the command.

Lucas was as ready as he would ever be, but could his opponent say the same?

This was, in the eyes of a knight, a very odd sight. Having just reached a clearing in the nearby forest, his first sight is that of a man and a dog, presumably his opponent(s). both of them. Sir Alexis wondered wheter or not the man would use the dog in combat. If so, the fight could get a bit interesting.. but nothing more than that. Fights to the death was almost a routine for Sir Alexis. Being responsible for at least sixty widows, and a few now-drunk-men. Now here he was, about to fight some no-name to the death, for what? He didn't know, and he cared not. The only thing that mattered was the thrill of not knowing how his opponent would fall! A morningstar to the face? Crossbowbolt in the neck? Perhaps a spear trough the chest? Or perhaps he'd be devoured by his own trusty canine! Now that's something Alexis would pay to see.

He closed in the distance between himself and his opponent, stopping about 50m away. His opponent had a bow, surely he'd use it against him at least once. No need to deny him the first shot, for Alexis's iron tower shield would protect him against the petty arrows, and mostly anything else the man could throw at him. Alexis unwrapped his crossbow from the right side of his belt, it was allready loaded with a single wooden bolt with an iron plated tip. This seemed to be the only bolt Alexis had for his crossbow, he wasn't going to need more than that. He would hit his target, even tough he wielded the crossbow in one hand, which he managed easily due to his incredible strength. He was the strongest man in his kingdom, and had never met anyone who could overpower him, ever. It was thanks to his enormous size and strength that he was able to move around in the heavy armour at all! Any normal man would colapse under the weight of the weapons, armour and shield combined, but not Alexis. For he was the strongest man ever - in his own view offcourse -.

Taking a defencive stance, he put his weight forward, pressed the shield down towards the ground so that only his helmet-covered head was visible, and put his crossbow down on the ground underneath him. He grabbed ahold of his spear, which was a bit short compared to other spears, and stabbed it down into the ground beside him before pulling up the crossbow again.
He yelled towards his opponent with his mighty voice "You should feel honoured. Today is the day that you, like many others before you, will fall at the hands of Sir Alexis!"

Lucas wasn't intimidated. His yew bow had the power to go through such armor with a lucky shot, but the usual tactic of arrow volleys to guarantee such a blow lacked the necessary manpower in this case. Here, the key would be to deceive and distract, and the rapid approach of the armored knight had played right into his hands.

"Percy, sic 'em!" The large, obnoxious dog starting bounding forward, closing the gap faster than any human could hope to, and leaped onto the giant of a man from the east and Alexis' left. This would force him to either use his shield arm to try to ward off the attack on his greaves or to awkwardly strike across his body with his weapon arm to be rid of the nuisance, and this gave Lucas the freedom to drift forward and towards the western hills so that the wall of steel and wood would not be much of a factor, stopping at a distance of approximately 20 yards.

Unlike Alexis, Lucas was not limited to waiting for the perfect shot, but took his time to line it up regardless. Withdrawing one arrow from the quiver of twenty, he nocked the shaft with practiced ease, then drew the string back with his left hand until it was even with his left shoulder. Now, Sir Alexis would know the fear French aristocrat-warriors faced at the Battle of Agincourt, as he plucked yew and sent the missile sailing towards the abdominal area, which would enjoy formidable protection from the intervening cuirass but not so much as the thorax right above it containing the heart and lungs. If anything, a strike from this distance would at least knock the wind out of him and open the door for a close-range opportunity kill.

Sir Alexis was not suprised when the coward of an archer sent his dog to do his dirty work. Too many times had he found himself in battle against henchmen rather than lords, for no better reason than cowardice! He had limited understanding of such a choice, one should not be called a man who sent their own pet to their death, for that was excactly what his opponent did when he ordered his canine to attack.

Pointing his crossbow forward at the right side of the shield as soon as the rather large dog rushed ahead, Alexis took as much time as he could to aim at the creature's head. True, the dog had some impressive speed at it's feet, especially considering it's size, but Alexis had more than enough time to get a good aim as it attempted to close the 50m distance between them. Had it been something with that of a man's intelect, it would without doubt have attempted evasive manouvers as soon as it saw the crossbow aimed at it, but this being a mere dog, it foolishly ran in a straight line at him. A loud "Kapack!" yelled troughout the soon-to-be battlefield as the deadly iron tipped bolt was released from the firm grip of Alexis's crossbow. Flying towards it's designated target with great precision, and enough force to penetrate a plate armour, even more so muscle and bone. The dog was about 10m away at this point.

Sir Alexis turned his attention away from the - possibly dead - dog who would no longer pose any threat to him, and fixed his gaze upon the petty archer who was drifting forward to the west, with not nearly as impressive speed as his now - possibly dead - dog. Alexis threw his crossbow down on the soft grass beside him, quickly retracted his spear from the ground and prepared himself for whatever the archer might hurl at him.

But no such thing came, not for a while at least. For some reason, the archer tought that drifting towards him to the west while he was distracted was a good tactic, and in all it's simplicity, it was. But the fact that the archer didn't stop until 20 yards away (18m), made it all too easy to place a shield between himself and the archer. In fact, he could probably take a crap and still have enough time to defend himself. Back to the matter at hand, the archer readied a arrow with such care that implied that he had all the time in the world. So did Alexis, and before the arrow was released, he had allready kneeled his body behind the iron tower shield so that no part of him was visible from the archer's location. A harmless thump sounded as the arrow hit the shield at the middle and bounched off onto the grass a few metre away.

Sir Alexis peeked up from his shield at his enemy, "Is that all you got you filthy coward!?"

---------

What if: - The dog wasn't hit by sir Alexis's well aimed crossbow attack:

Sir Alexis cursed loudly and threw away his crossbow, retracting his spear. Just as the dog was about to flank him on his shield-side, he turned slightly and gave a quick but strong jab with his shield at the dog, followed by a strong thrust of his spear aimed onto it's chest, stabbing it repedeatly until it was dead. He would then use the remaining time the archer used to drift closer to him to place himself in the defencive position described in the end of the above.

Sir Alexis had timed his crossbow bolt shot well, the bolt sailing clear through the mutt and killing him almost instantly. However, the force with which he had wedged his shield into the earth meant that he would have to spend precious time and effort pulling it up and repositioning the barrier, which was liable to cost him. Still, the endless repetition that he had to give up the game of golf in order to undertake paid off.

As soon as the first arrow's flight trajectory was denied, Lucas cunningly got a second shot ready, then quietly crept closer, his knowledge of how to do so refined by his experience in hunting and tracking. If he couldn't see Sir Alexis from behind that wall of iron, then that meant that the armored champion's vision of his opponent was also similarly hindered. At the last second, he took a step to his right such that Sir Alexis would have his vision of the impending shot impeded by his shield arm, and let loose, this time from half the distance of the previous shot and striking at the chest while bypassing the edge of the mobile barricade.

It was payback time.

Re: DWC 2011: Lucas Hunter vs. Sir Alexis

Sir Alexis had a near-perfect view of the approaching archer, as he was allready peeking up from his shield to see what his enemy was up to. He would have more than enough time to duck down, should the archer attempt another shot. He did draw a second arrow, and Alexis was prepared to duck behind his trusty shield yet again when he noticed the archer moving towards him yet again. The archer stopped at a 9m distance and tok a single step to the right, firing another arrow.

The archer was apparantly trying to get around the shield, but a lousy effort of a single step to the side while being 9m away would not do the trick. Not to mention that sir Alexis was more than capable of turning towards the archer no matter where he went. It wasn't as if he had lodged the shield stuck in the ground, just placed it there. The second arrow broke apart as it hit the thick iron shield with more force than the first, unable to penetrate it the slightest. Just as the arrow hit, Sir Alexis stood up, leaving a hand on top of the shield without raising it with him, and threw his spear towards the foolish archer's chest area with his mighty strength.

Following this, He'd pull up his shield, arm himself with his fearsome morningstar, and slowly approach the archer with his shield raised and in a slight crouching position, enough to minimize the possibillity of getting shot in the foot, only the top of his head (covered by a helmet) was visible, just enough to let him see his enemy. His shield arm, ready to block an charge or arrow (which he'd be aware of the second the archer attempted to load a third arrow), his weapon arm, ready to strike at his opponent. He would offcourse not approach the archer so closely that he'd be able to side-step around him, and would keep a minimum 1,5m safety distance unless charged at.

Lucas could tell that this was bad for him. Very, very bad. One of the strongest knights of the realm had murder in his eyes as he walked towards the yeoman, step by purposeful step, shield ready and weapon arm raised. There was only one thing left to do, and that was to run for his life--and run he did, straight into the coniferous forest that so closely resembled the hunting grounds around his village, his terror-fueled flight allowing him to easily evade the cast spear.

This resemblance was not lost on Lucas, and putting his bow aside for a few seconds to work with his hands and his knife behind a particularly large specimen, the first thing he did was cut free some low-lying pine cones and scatter them in his wake as a sort of land mine that would alert the keen-eared huntsman to his enemy's position should one be squashed underfoot. He made sure to toss a few ahead as well to give the illusion that he was further into the forest than he really was, so he could possibly shoot this metal-clad maniac in the back. He still had 18 arrows to go, after all.

True, this was a coward's tactic in the worldview of those that prided themselves on their prowess in close quarters combat, but this was war. War was not about the viewpoint of the one who happened to be right, but rather that of the one who happened to be left.

( Since you forgot to dodge the spear.. )

The spear, hurled at the archer with great strength, it hit him perfectly right in the chest! It penetrated his armour, and drove itself deeply into his body.. causing massive damage, possibly even death.

----
If you didn't die from that.
----

As soon as he saw his cowardly enemy flee in his approaching presence, he stopped. Why pursue, when the enemy clearly wasn't going to fight like a man? He went back into prone-position, peeking half-way up from his shield to follow the coward's movements. Doing this as a precausion so that he wouldn't get circled around and shot in the back.
He knew he'd hit the man good, and it was only a matter of time before he was dead, as no mortal man could survive such a injury.

Lucas felt the offending point of the well-thrown spear strike him in the center of the chest. Right on target, just like a good knight of the realm ought to be. Perhaps a little too accurate. The spear had actually lodged itself in his sternum, minimizing damage to the heart and lungs underneath as was its job (with help from the studded leather), but the force of the cast from such close range knocked him onto his back.

His first instinct was to try to remove the shaft that was sticking out of him, but his second instinct told him that if he did, he was a dead man for sure. He'd seen it too often that someone tried to remove a projectile without the aid of a trained surgeon and ended up doing more harm than good. Rolling onto his left side, his right arm went to draw his spear to fend off this juggernaut of a man, but his grip was unsure partially due to the blood on his hands and partially from his own barely controlled fear. No doubt Sir Alexis would see continued movement and move in to deliver the decisive blow, and Lucas wasn't about to let that happen.

As his enemy fell on his back, as a result from the oncoming spear that hit him perfectly in the chest, Sir Alexis was almost prepared to turn around and leave, thinking his enemy dead or defeated. It became, however, soon apparant that the archer wasn't going down without a fight, as he desperatly tried pulling up his own spear, flapping his wounded body around helplessly.

- Assuming the archer never moved away, since he was hit by the spear -

Sir Alexis would honour his opponent's dying wish to meet his end in battle, even tough he felt no actual "fighting" would take place between now and the archer's death. He was highly skilled in close-combat, and a mortally injured opponent who had, uptil now, attempted to best him with a bow and arrow, would unlikely pose much of a challenge.
Readying his morningstar, pulling it behind his head, ready to strike, he slowly approached the heavily wounded archer present on the ground before him. His large iron shield was raised in front of his body, prepared to fend off any desperate attempts at halting his approach. He needed only a single well-placed blow to finish his downed enemy off.

Lucas grinned wildly as he saw Sir Alexis pull the morning star behind his head, resorting to an overhead blow to smash through his studded leather armor and finish him off once and for all when he had his spear in his hands. Using the shaft protruding from his own chest as a range check, he shifted the grip further from the head in order to get as much range as he could, then thrust with all the force he could muster at Sir Alexis' exposed armpit as the knight reared up to strike.

Chain mail was pretty good at stopping maces and blades because of the construction allowing the force of the impact to be spread to adjoining areas, but one of their most glaring weaknesses was spears, arrows and other implements designed to pierce through such protection. It was this weakness he would be counting on to survive. In addition, various nerves, muscles and blood vessels occupied this area, and a particularly lucky strike would disable his weapon arm.

"For Richard the Lionheart!"

"For Richard the Lionheart!" The soon-to-be corpse yelled, thrusting it's spear forward towards Sir Alexis's armpit, a move that was very likely to disable his weapon-arm. That is, if he was actually about to attack with it, then it would have caught him completely off-guard, and probably even severely hurting him! But that was not the case, he had moved forward towards the archer, expecting a counter-attack, and he would not finish off his opponent before such a move had occured, following that tought, the exposed armpit was not unprotected. As soon as he saw his downed enemy prepare to thrust his spear at him, his grip on his morningstar tightened, this was the final move.

Just as the counter-attack was made, Sir Alexis swooped his shield to the right, pushing the spear to the side past him. Using this move as a preparation for his follow-up strike, he turned his body to the left and brought the morningstar down towards the archer's head with bone-crushing strength, who was most likely bending forward due to thrusting the spear at him just now. It was unlikely that the archer would regain his composure in time to avoid the attack, mostly because he had Alexis's spear lodged firmly in his chest, which should drastically lower his odds of survival.

------------
To avoid unneccesary use of time in case of voided defence: If Alexis was hit by the spear.
-----------

"Graahhh!" The enormous man in armour yelled, which obviously wasn't effective enough to stop a petty archer from getting trough with a pointy stick! Dropping his morningstar as a reaction to the mighty-fine critical hit, Alexis immediatly reacted with rage in his heart. "You stinking rat!!", he dropped his shield, and quickly grabbed ahold of the spear firmly lodged in the archer's chest with his left arm, since his right was useless at this point. He forced all of his strength, and immense weight, on pushing it further into the downed enemy, who would have little chance to prevent him from doing it. "I'll tear your guts out and feed them to your dead dog, you whimpy coward!!"

Lucas was down, but he was clearly not out. As the knight undertook the tricky task of divesting himself of his shield with the same arm it was strapped to in a futile effort to deliver the final blow, the archer decided to try to press his advantage and push the knight back with the purchase his spear point had gained in the man's flesh. As long as that point was still under his right arm, he couldn't lower it to do much of anything, nor could he approach the downed yeoman so easily.

His breathing was quickly becoming labored, however, as the pain of having an enemy projectile lodged in his sternum was starting to take over, but victory was in his grasp and he damn well knew it even as blood stained his jerkin from the chest wound. With all the strength he could muster, putting his abdominals, pectorals and all of his arms into the effort, he pushed on the spear shaft to try to force the knight to the ground. This would likely result in the knight trying to twist his body clockwise so that the point of impact would be behind him in an effort to close the distance and finish the fight with his massive weight and bulk, but that would prove futile as well, as the spear tip was also lodged between chain-mail links and made such gyrations rather difficult.

This was the first rule of combat in action: Never die easy. As Lucas desperately tried to hold Sir Alexis at spear's reach and perhaps even get him off his feet due to such force being transferred to a point above his center of gravity, he could feel it in his bones that these next few moves would be the difference between life and death.

(( The "What if" was only in case my defence was viewed as void.. But I'll roll with it. ))

Sir Alexis's shield was NOT strapped to his arm, he was simply holding it by it's handle. So whatever the archer attempted to do, was not going to prevent Alexis from pushing the spear deeper into his body. Something he did with massive force, tough unable to put his entire weight on it, as that would push the spear in his armpit further into himself. Luckily for him, the spear that was lodged in himself, was far from fatal, and would not prevent him from claiming victory. Rest assured, Sir Alexis's strength alone was more than enough to break trough the allready damaged bones in the archer's body, likely impaling him in the process.

(( Unsure wheter or not to claim auto-hit here, since you did ignore the fact that I attacked you.. If I were to claim auto-hit, it would go something along the lines of.. ))

The spear sucsessfully forced it's way trough the poor archer's body, most likely ripping away the last bits and pieces of life he had in him.

Lucas gasped as the pain shot through his whole body, releasing his spear as Sir Alexis put his entire weight behind the projectile stuck in his chest. A large man wearing heavy armor had a lot of weight to throw around, and it was all bearing down on his breast bone. Almost as soon as he hit the ground, the leverage the knight had on him came fully to bear, and the spear point clove through the sternum and went right through his heart, causing the central organ to explode in a shower of blood at systolic pressure right into the face plate of Sir Alexis.

A lowborn that had worked his way up to the point of being a provider for those who needed his services, regardless of station...leave it that there wouldn't be a children's fable about this showdown anytime soon. Lucas Hunter had given up the ghost.
