Holmsfield General Hospital
8:17pm
42 year old Todd Johansson staggered, bleeding, into the A&E department of the hospital, aided by his wife and 14 year old son. Examinations soon ascertained that the Johanssons had been on a bike ride together when Mr. Johansson had apparently lost control of his bike and fallen, resulting in the deep gash in his leg. Mr. Johansson was given 7 stitches and, despite his insisting that he was just very sensitive around blood, was advised to spend the night on the ward after losing consciousness twice during treatment.
Not long after his family left, medical student Kathy Saunders, 23, noticed Mr. Johansson appeared to be suffering with severe flu-like symptoms; a few hours later and Mr. Johansson was vomiting blood. Eventually Kathy suggested the possibility that the patient was suffering from Ebola virus - the test results came back positive, and by then it was too late. The virus had already worked its way through his system.
20th August 1990
Three days later, the town's authorities announced that the outbreak caused by inexperienced doctors, poor hygiene and a single sick patient had reached epidemic status, and gave the go-ahead for the hospital and all the patients and staff inside to be sealed in and abandoned, in a ludicrous but effective attempt to keep the virus from spreading further.
Holmsfield stood with its doors locked and bolted, those inside sealed off forever from the outside world.
31st December 2008
Kathy Saunders had not been inside the hospital when it was sealed and New Year’s Eve eighteen years later saw her 16-year-old daughter, Anne, hosting a New Year's Eve party. Anne was a very kind-hearted girl who made friends easily, and from her first day in high school surprised everyone by becoming acquaintances with a number of people in each clique. In some cases, these acquaintances became close friendships, but just as she was never associated with one group, she was always welcome in each.
It was because of this that Anne decided to invite a few people from each clique, with the full knowledge that they all hated each other and had never spoken, to her New Year's Eve party, which was to be held in her house, having thrown out her parents for the night. Surprisingly enough, everyone who had been invited turned up, and after about half an hour of uncomfortable coughs and hostile glances, people started to mingle. Things seemed to be going fairly well, until someone said the wrong thing, and an ugly argument followed. Anne had just forced herself into the middle of her bickering friends when a punch was thrown, and then the real fighting started.
Afterwards, no one could say what had happened: no one knew who had started the argument; what had been said; who had struck out first; how long the fighting had gone on for. All they knew was that the sound of shattering glass and an ear-piercing scream that would stay with them forever silenced them immediately, and slowly all eyes turned toward a broken window. Time seemed to stand still for a moment as each of the teenagers took in the sight of the crumpled body lying sprawled on the lawn below - and then someone screamed, and time caught up with itself. In an unspoken agreement, everyone headed for the stairs and assembled around the girl covered in glass and blood. One of the boys reached out with his foot to kick her onto her back, and there was not a single person present who didn't cringe or wince or turn away. Anne's face was badly cut, with jagged shards of glass piercing her cheeks and her eye. It wasn't really necessary, but the same boy knelt beside her, felt her pulse, and announced to the silent crowd that she was dead.
A panicked frenzy ensued. Some people wanted to go to the police, to either confess everything or to claim it was suicide; others suggested getting rid of the body and carrying on as if they'd never been to any New Year's Eve party. The stronger people in the group persuaded and, in some cases, bullied the others into believing that the latter option made more sense; after a long deliberation, they moved the body to a nearby wood, buried it, and swore to each other that they would never bring the evening up again.
When the police got involved, the teenagers simply insisted that they’d never accepted Anne’s invitation, and no one could prove otherwise. The disappearance was initially put down to her running away, but as the days drew on Anne’s parents had to begin to come to terms with the fact that it seemed unlikely they would ever see their daughter again. As Anne's face made less and less frequent appearances in the newspapers, and people began to find other things to talk about, the group of students who had more or less murdered her began to relax.
Even though they never dared to talk about what they had been doing while the rest of the town was bringing in 2009, each and every one of them found reassurance in the unspoken assumption that no one would ever find out, that it was all behind them, and that they would never have to face the events of 31st December 2008 again.
31st December 2009
New Year's Eve, exactly one year after The Incident. Everyone who had attended the party, who had contributed to Anne Saunders' death, received a letter yesterday, written in an oddly familiar hand, telling them to turn up at the abandoned Holmsfield General Hospital for "A night you'll never forget." What none of them realise is, the letters ask them to arrive at the same time as the previous year's get together.
Unaware of the identity of the other people invited, each teenager shows up outside the old hospital at the allocated time, and gets a big surprise when they realise who has also been asked to show. Someone immediately suggests one of them set it up to mess with them, and they bicker for a few minutes before realising that the previously boarded up doors of the hospital have opened, and both intrigued and scared, they enter.
What they encounter is this; the body of the girl they killed exactly one year ago today, lying mangled and broken on the floor a little way down the corridor, surrounded by glass and covered in blood. Everyone's attention is drawn to her hand, which twitches slightly, and then to her eyes, which open and roll in their sockets to stare at each of them in turn. And a small, deliriously twisted smile stretches across her slashed face.
"It was your fault."
With this, the fainter hearted of the group turn and run for the doors, but they slam shut in their faces as they reach them.
"And you will pay."
The rest of the group wheel around to stare at the others as they wrestle with the doors, but they appear to have boarded themselves back up again, leaving them trapped. Slowly, they turn as one back to face the body - ghost? - of Anne Saunders once more, but she's gone, leaving nothing but a haunting trail of blood leading down the darkest of corridors.
"Well shit."
