Here at the RPA, after nearly a year of applying one method, we are now moving forwards, with the aim of offering Students the ability to learn in a way that is bespoke to them, allowing them to concentrate entirely on the areas they want to improve upon.
As such, with new group sessions, the RPA is moving in the direction of teaching specific subjects pertinent to RolePlaying.
The subject areas are as follows:
Character Development
Story Development
Environmental Development
Language Development
The specified areas will cover the following things:
Character Development:
*Creating characters
*Making your characters grow and develop
*Maintaining your character throughout a post, and throughout an entire RP
*The importance of character balancing
*Methods to help you get inside the head of your character
Story Development:
*Creating RPs
*Keeping within a specific storyline
*How to make a story progress without it being intrusive to other players
*Making things happen with a flow and steady progression
*Methodology to make the story you are telling interesting
Environmental Development:
*Make your surroundings fit in with the genre and style of game
*Allowing readers to 'see' your surroundings, whether it be from your viewpoint and interpretation, or their own
*Techniques to make your descriptives interesting
*Building the environment over several posts
*How to make the world in which your character is situated interactive and alive
Language Development:
*Grammar
*Spelling
*Vocabulary
*Syntax structure
*Post set up
With the subjects that can be studied here at the academy covered, next we need to discuss the methods employed by this institution.
Lessons are to be taught in groups that are no larger than five. Each group will be studying one subject, with a single teacher giving the lessons. Each post written will be critiqued by the teacher, based ONLY on the subject at hand.
Each group lesson will work in one of two ways - Firstly, a group RP, where a setting is made, and you play the game, with your tutor giving you critiques. The second method will be a series of lectures/assignments, that you then need to respond to, or apply, within the group thread. Still, the Tutor will then critique the posts, given the specific area of the assignment, or precluding lecture.
Rather than giving specific grades, there will be a three tier qualification system in place. These qualifications are, as follows:
*Level One - Foundation Diploma in Free Form RolePlaying
*Level Two - Intermediate Diploma in Free Form RolePlaying
*Level Three - Degree in Free Form RolePlaying
We will also be offering more advanced courses, with higher qualifications as the RPA progresses in the following months.
Bi-weekly, there will be an exam available for each level, which students can take if they so wish. However, you may only take the exam for the level which you are next to achieve. For example, someone, on their first examination period, will not be allowed to post for the Level Three exam.
Exams are to be formatted in such a way that a series of scenarios are placed before a Student, and they must make a post, as per instructions, in response.
With a set criteria to hit, encompassing ALL subjects, if a Student meets all of the requirements, they pass, and may continue onwards with their learning, ready to take the next level exam when next they come around.
Should the Student not pass, they will be recommended to attend lessons on areas that are up for improvement, if they are not already in those subjects.
One important thing to remember is that you don't need to, in any way, feel pressured to take the exams. You learn at your own pace, and take the exams when you feel comfortable and ready for them. Exams will be different for each period, and no correspondence will be given from them, save for recommendations for further subjects to study.
An exam will be posted on a Sunday evening. You have one week to take the exam. Then a week will be given for evaluating the exams, and marking passes and non-passes. Then, on the Sunday two weeks after the first exam was given, the next will be posted.
Each Tutor will be in charge of a specific area of study, and as the Academy grows, we will let those initial Tutors become individual Subject leaders, acting as 'head teachers' for each subject, taking responsibility for all Tutors teaching their subject.
Students, upon graduation, may apply for the position of a Tutor, or may even be requested as such.
In the future we will be offering courses where you can earn certificates (Not quite a diploma) in each individual subject.
Our aim, as an institution that aims to educate and participate in the growth of the RolePlaying community as a whole, is to ensure that people are given the opportunity to learn. As such, should any Student have a suggestion that they feel would be of benefit to those learning, please tell us. We will take every suggestion into consideration.
And, if you have any complaints, please also tell us. If we don't know, we can't fix it.
The most important part of the RPA is that you have fun whilst learning, and becoming more proficient at your hobby. As such, everyone is implored to have fun!!
