Fateful Travels ( )

Postby Jadeling Hawkins on Thu Oct 25, 2007 1:25 am

Every world and culture has its own little clutch of legends and myths. Some are beyond fantastical, with strange beasts and remarkable heroes, and some foretell or warn of events that effect even those who choose not to believe in such things. This story revolves around a particular legend in a particular world.....a world filled with magic and mayhem, good and evil, and everything in between.....
For many years and generations, there has been a legend foretelling of a time when the limits of brotherhood and peace are stretched nearly to the point of snapping. Trust between races is minimal at best, and strange beasts rove the world delighting in its sad state. At this time, a small group of mismatched travelers would band together, led by a disciple of fate, to gather five sacred, unassuming objects with various powers in order to summon to earth a golden temple. There, they would be given the final gift needed to restore peace and maintain a necessary balance to their world. But their success or failure was to be determined only by their own choices...
Now, at a time that no one expected, in a town filled with nothing special, a small group of strangers are about to become a small group of heroes, drawn together by fate....or highly unlikely chance.

It was a sunnyish day, not too bright and shiny, but enough that the roads leading to the small village were relatively crowded. Jade strolled along, using wide strides to make herself appear less approachable, her hood pulled up well over her face, hiding her inhuman features. Best not to share ones face with strangers, after all. All day, she had felt something, almost an urgency, tugging her towards this place, and had almost successfully convinced herself it was just hunger.
As she entered the town, she kept a wary eye for travelers who might mean harm, whose fingers had a habit of visiting others' pockets, or who simply intended on becoming too friendly. Travelers much like herself.
Her eyes roved around for some sort of supply shop, somewhere to fill her bags, her belly, and, if need be, her pockets, so she could scurry back out to the road.

Finally, she spotted a small shop that looked at least mildly interesting.
"Alchemy, eh?"

Rhea milled about the small shop, inspecting the trinkets on the shelves with mild interest. She was not sure what her drawn her to this interesting yet, albeit slightly obscure shop in the first place. She had never had much of an interest in alchemy. Rhea had seen on countless occasions what alchemists could do; she had in fact traveled in a small caravan with a group of them not too long ago.

During the trip, Rhea, always a skeptic, had dismissed the art as nothing more but clever tricks and subtle mind manipulation, but there had always been that tugging doubt. Having other things on her mind, Rhea had let the thought of alchemy wander into the back of her head and stay there. But that little voyage to the coast was the only thing Rhea could attribute to the shop's sign spiking her interest as she had been walking down the street.

Rhea wandered over to a bookshelf, running her hand across the spines of countless thick, leather-bound volumes all about the subject that was alchemy. She reached out for a crimson-colored number on the shelf, reading Rikehart's Guide to Alchemy - Level 1, and pulled it into her hands. For such a book, it was not as costly as she would have thought. Rhea had some spare change in the bottom of her pocket and decided that the book was worth the investment if it would quench her curiosity on the subject.

She shrugged, tucked the book under her arm, and made her way to the counter.

((Angels info is at fantasy-angel-t3157.html#p29795))

She stared at the people passing by looking for one, she still hadn't seen a target. A person rode on horse picking dust up as he passed by, she sneezed and shook her head to get the dust off her head, "jerk" she mumbled going after him with stealth, "if he has a horse he should have money" she thought.

But losing site of him after entering the center of town, the people all walking around was a little irraiting so she found an ally to stay in until she found someone to follow and hopefully steal from.

As Jade entered the small shop, her green eyes flicked towards the girl in the alley.
"Tsk tsk...a bit young to be out and about by your lonesome, dearie," She chuckled to herself. Tugging her cloak a bit further on her head, she ducked into the store, pausing to allow her eyes to adjust, and fighting off the strong feeling of magnetism that had been growing stronger since she entered the out-of-the-way village.
Relieving a man that was exiting of his purse, she weighed it with one hand, tying it to her own belt with a sort of half-interest. While her browned hands roved curiously over some of the shinier objects in the shop, she became aware of her eyes flicking continually towards the door, a feeling of excitement growing just beneath her ribs, as though she was preparing to reunite with a dear old friend. Of course, considering her lack of dear old friends and the fact that she hadn't met with any of them in a considerable amount of time, this was a foolish thought. Attempting to shake the strange feeling, she left the shinies and began inspecting the dusty old books, fully aware that she wouldn't be able to read them. But it was the thought that counted.

Rhea had been gathering her new book at the counter, just after paying for the text, when she had seen it happen.

It had been a very quick, very slight move, but not quick enough to escape her keen eyes. The woman who had entered the shop as another customer made his exit, had very swiftly taken hold of what was not hers and taken the man's coin purse. For some inexplicable reason, Rhea's usual mindset when it came to strangers and their problems, 'don't get involved', went out the window as she saw Sticky Fingers amble into the shop and the man who had just been jipped walk out, ignorant to the fact that he was now money-less.

Stuffing her book into her knapsack, Rhea followed the pick-pocket casually to a shelf of old books. She pretended to be interested in the titles before her for a few seconds, and then turned to the woman, face unreadable.

"Ripping off an old guy who was out for a walk doesn't seem like a very nice thing to do."

Jade shifted herself, just slightly, and fixed her eyes on the girl beside her. Her mouth eased into a slow, crooked smile.
"Saw that, did you? Swift eyes, lass." She chuckled slightly, returning to pretending to examine the bookshelf. "You about to lecture me on the poor beasts that made the leather for me boots, or does your heart merely bleed for old richling?"
Her eyes flicked back to the girl, their unusual glow illuminating the young face in the dim light. "Or mayhaps you didn't notice all that pretty jewelry he took the time to bedeck himself with? 'Course, 'tis possible he wears all his belongings with him to every store he visits...who am I to judge?"
She was about to turn her back on the intrusive child when she became dimly aware of an unusual feeling....a feeling of knowing. Certainly, the nagging draw was still strong, but it seemed...less. As though a small piece to a large puzzle had been found beneath a sofa. She turned to face the girl completely, one hand at her hip, the other resting on the shelf. Staring.
"Where do you hail from, anyhow? You don't seem to blend here."
Not a proper greeting, and probably less than mannerly, but she had never been on to mince words.

"Lecture?" Rhea asked, slightly amused. "God, no; that's not my place. I'm not that eloquent this early in the morning, anyway."

There was something about this girl, this scruffy-looking petty thief of a girl, that drew Rhea. It was a curious sensation, yet one of satisfaction. As if Rhea had suddenly remembered something long forgotten. She leaned against the bookshelf, casual yet alert, and looked into the girl's eyes.

"No, my approach is a bit more direct, see. Just take the money bag to the man - just because he's wallowing in money and we're not, does not entitle us to steal what he has."

"Where do you hail from, anyhow? You don't seem to blend here."

"I rarely do," she said with a smirk. Some years ago, Rhea would have felt abashed at not being able to cloak her identity completely, but she had learned to accept the fact that her appearance was a bit unusual. "I come from a town in a backwards country a long ways from here. Many mountains, plains, and an ocean even, stand between my homeland and me now. And yourself?"

Jade's eyes lit up with amusement at the girl's show of attitude. She reminded her of herself at a slightly younger age.
"A traveler, eh? Bit of a traveler meself. Don't exactly come from any specific area."
Her mouth retrieved its crooked smile. "You've seem to got a bit of spine in you, lassie. For hailing from a backwards country, your head appears to be attached nice an' straight." She looked the girl up and down. "You ain't traveling alone, are you?"

"Traveling alone is the only kind of traveling I know," Rhea said with a casual shrug.

Rhea couldn't help but find herself amused. She didn't know why, but despite the subtle pick pocketing, this woman was sitting very well with her; a rare occurrence. She had actually smirked at the woman's ironic comment. It was a very rare occurrence, indeed. "I wouldn't know, but I assume it's easier this way. I find travel parties tend to have trouble appeasing all of their members. And you? Are you a passerby or have you made this small town your humble home for the time being?'

Jade flashed a brief grin. This girl got more and more interesting as she spoke.
"Aye, a wandering wonder, that's me." She crossed her arms, raising her eyes to the ceiling as though digging back through memories. "Been traveling for years now, since I was younger than yourself. Alone for the most part, though I've dabbled in the art of grouphood." One of the glowing green orbs beneath her hood winked.
"T'ain't too difficult, so long as someone's got a firm enough hand to reign in the troops." She patted one fist into an open hand, grinning once more, thinking back to her time spent keeping order aboard her ship.
Pulling herself away from her own gunpowder and treasure-filled memories, she focused back on the girl, her mouth easing into an interested smile. "What's your name, then, lone girlie?"

Yuu walked into the bookstore. He was mildy interested in alchemy. He was adept at most forms of magic. "What is alchemy, but a meloncholy mixture of magic and science anyway" He'd always said. He smelled them immediately. Humans. But odd blood. Maybe elven. Hmm.. It didn't hardly matter now anyway. He was stronger than his thirst. He walked around and look around the book until he came across two women talking quietly. He went to the aisle behind them, picked up an alchemy book (one much to advanced for him) and surreptitiously listened to their mutters. For some odd reason he was VERY interested in what they had to say. Possibly an attraction. Possibly he was just bore and nosy.

Ernest Wilkes heard voices coming from his alchemy shop. Quickly, the elf stood up, pulled his pants into a proper location around his waste, and darted out of the outhouse he had been using.

In through the back door he went, and appeared without anyone noticing behind a plain oaken desk.

"Ah, three customers! In one day!" he exclaimed, "wonderful! Feel free to browse, and if y'all find something you like, just--uh-"

He put his hand to his face to confirm that he wasn't wearing his glasses. He looked again at the people in the shop and saw nothing but three moving blurrs. "Anyway, yes," he continued, a bit miffled, "if anyone is interested in buying anything, just say the word."

He crouched down and began searching the drawers of his desk looking for his eyepeices.

It was then, when Yuu remembered why he'd come in the first place. "As a matter of fact sir there is something I need. I was wondering if you had anything on alchemically imbuing the body, mind, or a weapon such as a sword with elemental properties."

"The body and mind?" Wilkes repeated, standing back up, "Possible, but dangerous. Very dangerous. A sword can be done, though. What exactly did you have in mind? Permanatly poisoning the blade? Self-repairs? Searing metal?"

"And what do you know about curses?" a new voice inquired of the shopkeeper. Standing just inside the doorway was a pale young man no older than 20, wearing a frayed and tattered black robe reminiscent of that of a monk's. He had untamed black hair down to his neck and vacant green eyes. Judging by the distant expression and the pearly marble staff he carried, this man was blind.

Of course, 'curse' wasn't exactly the most accurate word he could use to describe it, but if he got directly to the point he would arouse suspicion. Either suspicions of his intentions or suspicions of his sanity, and neither would benefit him in the long run...For now he would try to gather information. That's all he could do. Information might prove to be his only armor, and in the end, his only weapon.

"My name is Rhea Slade," she said, mentally frowning, as she tended to do, at her surname; it was not a name she was proud to bear, considering the man whom she had inherited it from.

"I am a vagabond, drifting from town to town. While I don't have a fixed trade, I am able in most crafts if you require any services." She couldn't help at sell herself as a laborer to people when she introduced herself - what little pay they gave her was often enough to help her get around. Yet Rhea had a feeling that this might not be the case; something deep in the back of her head, her skeptic head that was arguing her reasonings as she made them, was telling her that it was no mere coincidence that she had stumbled into this shop and met this woman.

"But you, pickpocket with disciplinary methods," she added, noticing her gesture. "Who are you?"
