Matthew or Matty to those who know him well enough to not get a Saturday Night Special jabbed in the gut, smiled as his eyes swept over the crowd of spacers and workers in the tight confines of slot machines and tables. His skin prickled with the excitement that teemed in this place, to the point where the condensation from the free fruity drink he had been given, turning into an almost erotic sensation on his finger tips. He could smell of the money in this place and the risks those around him would take to try and get a piece. He smiled wider, as his mind was filled with delight, fear and a number of those thoughts, as the crowd's surface thoughts nearly overwhelmed his mind. A month in spacer, with a pair of people who wouldn't gamble with him, even if he promised to play fair, was far too long of a dry spell.

Chuckling softly, he roamed among them, getting a feel for the dealers and players in the place, focusing on those playing games of skill, rather then games of chance. Those were easier marks, as he could use his special talents for an advantage but were less of a thrill. Finally he settled into the seat of a slot machine, just to waste a few creds and time. Lights flashed as he pulled the handle and he was sucked into a wonderland of chance. Minutes raced by, as he lost a handful of pocket change.

As soon as he got a return (all be it less then a quarter of the amount he had put into the machine), Matthew get up and strolled towards the back. There were three tables there, set aside and kinda hidden. Each one was set up with a robotic dealer and unlike the rest of the tables, nothing went to the house, every cred or whatever else you chose to bet went to the players. Only one of the tables was in use, three of the seats taken up in a basic game of five card stud. These games, were his favorite, as one had saved his life once and you could always find interesting things to win.

Malhotra watched the player across from him over his rebreather mask. The gravity here was light enough that he could walk around in relative comfort, but he would be a fool to trust sharing the air with the types that frequent the kind of establishment he found himself in.

The man in question had been laying down big money all night, and losing it hand after hand. From the moment he picked up his cards he had been shaking with anticipation and his body temperature rising. His name was Kepper, captain of some corporate freighter. He made the big bucks and had no idea how to handle risk.

Malhotra folded, and the player after him, wise to his ways, followed suit. A glint appeared in the eye of the freighter captain. Kepper still made a decent haul after the hand played out, but he could have made more.

Removing his rebreather for a moment, to sip his drink, Malhotra looked up and locked eyes with a familiar face.

"Jager. I suppose if I were to run into you anywhere, it would be here." He turned to the bot dealer. "Put in an order for another Red Sun for myself and whatever my friend here would like."

The captain of the Fat Dragon motioned at the seat next to him. "It's good to see you, Mat. How's the trader's life treating you? Making as much money as when the Gryphon was a pleasure yacht?

Deirdre was in a foul mood. She had already lost a good chunk of money and had a miserable time at the tables doing it. The night was turning into a bust all around. Stepping into the Lucky Star Deirdre looked around.

Her feet carried her through the crowds. Elbows contacted ribs as she made space for herself between the tables. The sound of the slot machines, the constant hum of the crowd made her lip curl in disgust. She couldnā€™t handle this part of a casino. Finally pushing and shoving her way through the majority of the place, Deirdre found herself near the card tables.

With a sigh of contentment, the disgust faded into a smile. Here was where she belonged, not up front with the low lifeā€™s hoping that chance and luck would favour them. ā€œScrew that shit...ā€ Deirdre mumbled to herself.

Years of practice playing poker with Theo, Naitre and the crew onboard and in every port they stopped in had made Deirdre appreciate the strategy of poker. Her shoulders slumped when she realized only three tables operating were the ones she wanted. She hated giving a cut of her winnings to the house, preferring to find the groups where all bets were off and all the spoils went to the winner.

Her eyes scanned the three tables. Only one had activity. Four of the seats were taken, leaving a single seat. A motley bunch was assembled. One was rather sickly looking, even wearing a rebreather. One wasnā€™t too bad to look at but Deirdre shrugged that off in favour of watching the man who was betting big and clearly losing it as he went. Either he didnā€™t care as his money was bottomless or he was just a shit player. Either way, he was Deirdreā€™s kind of man. She needed to recoup some of what she had lost already this evening.

It was her payout from her last contract, one of many she had taken in the short time since she had left Naitre. Always single runs, decent payouts. Deirdre had been hoping the constant change would keep her interested and excited. Instead the time spent getting to know a new ship with every run was almost boring. She wanted to know a ship the way she had known the False Hawk. She could handle any ship she set foot on, that wasnā€™t an issue but there was something about knowing what it could do, what it could handle and the subtleness of each individual ship that was appealing. Knowing a ship so well that you could push it to its very limits and still make the run was where the thrill lay.

Deirdre sat in the free seat, placing the last of her creds on the table. Her legs crossed, left over right and she looked around the table. Two of them, the skinny one and the scruffy one were talking; the tone friendly and names were tossed around. Deirdre assumed the men knew each other. Didnā€™t matter to her, she was here to see how much she could suck out of one particular card player. She looked the man over, his face giving away so much and the cards for this hand hadnā€™t even been dealt yet. Deirdre didnā€™t roll her eyes but she wanted to.

Nodding to them all, ā€œGentlemen...at least I assume we are all gentlemen.ā€ The corner of her mouth turned up, not quite a smile, not quite a smirk.
