Edward and Alphonse Elric are brothers living in the village of Resembool in the country of Amestris (アメストリス, Amesutorisu?). Their father, Hohenheim, left home when Edward and Alphonse were still very young. Years later, their mother, Trisha Elric, dies of a terminal illness. After their mother's death, Edward becomes determined to bring her back through the use of alchemy, an advanced science in which an object can be reformed into something completely different. They learn of the Human Transmutation, a forbidden art in which one attempts to create a human who had died. However, this attempt failed, ultimately resulting in the loss of Edward's left leg and Alphonse's entire body. In a desperate effort to save his brother, Edward sacrifices his right arm to affix his brother's soul to a suit of armor. After that, Edward's left leg and right arm are fitted with two sets of automail, a type of advanced prosthetic limb, created for him by his close family friends Winry Rockbell and her grandmother Pinako.

Edward sets out to become a State Alchemist (国家錬金術師, Kokka Renkinjutsushi?), which is an alchemist employed by the State Military of Amestris. State Alchemists are identified by their silver pocket watches and the unique titles assigned to them upon becoming a State Alchemist. Becoming a State Alchemist would enable Edward to use the extensive resources available to them to discover a way to restore what he and Alphonse had lost, but it also turns him into a "weapon" of the military, who are famous for destroying almost all Ishval's population in a past Civil War. The brothers eventually learn of the Philosopher's Stone, a legendary stone that is said to allow the holder to completely bypass the law of Equivalent Exchange, and set off in search of it as a means to restore their bodies. Along the way they discover that the Philosopher's Stone requires human lives to create it, and find others who seek it as well, doing almost whatever they can to get their hands on it. They are attacked by the homunculi, a group of human-like creatures that carry pieces of the Philosopher's Stone inside themselves. They are named after the seven deadly sins and act as primary villains.

Appearance: Rekannen appears to be the prime of foreign beauty, a young and dark-skinned girl with long black hair. She is not particularly tall, but because of her imposing demeanor and her willowy frame she often appears to be so. Her raven-black hair frames her face in jagged bangs and is tied at the back in a low ponytail. She has a particular love of metal, as can be seen by the multiple bracelets on her wrists, silver hoops dangling from her ears, and in piercings along her eyebrows. She generally dresses in loose, brightly-colored clothing, often in an Asiatic style with a sash tied around her waist. Her favorite transmutations include needles and knives out of the metal that she wears, so she can fling them at her enemies.

Biography: As a young traveler from the far East, she lived an ordinary life as a seamstress's child. Her single mother often neglected her, needing to work as hard as she could to make a living. However, despite her low birth, Rekannen rose quickly in the hierarchy of street urchins, becoming something of a leader and heroine in their eyes. From these friends she lived as a careless, wild child, getting involved in gang fights and fistfights. Her raw determination and self-confident manner developed from these experiences, especially in her several exploits in thievery. She grew to love shiny metals out of all her plunder, eventually adorning them in piercings and bracelets.

Her free childhood soon came to an end when a wealthy merchant from Amestris married her mother. Although she resented being forced to be educated and "tamed", Rekannen grudgingly knows that she has become a more worldly person from a basic education. She felt that all her subjects were a bore, until she learned about the science of alchemy. The topic was infinitely fascinating to her; she had never seen such a magical power in her life. Her spirit was immediately drawn to the idea of becoming an alchemist, which she never fully let go of. The forbidden transmutation of ordinary items into gold or other precious metals was also too promising to ignore. Still impulsive and careless as a teenager, on one of the many days she cut classes, Rekannen purchased a train ticket to Amestris in hopes of learning alchemy.

Struggling at first, she slowly began to memorize and practice the basic principles. She studied under any teacher she could find and at any library she could hitchhike to. If she got bored, Rekannen would leave the area and move on. Despite how many times the concepts eluded her, she often reassured herself with thoughts of fantastic treasures and adventures. Rekannen's specialty in alchemy turned out, naturally, to be the manipulation of precious metals, especially silver. She found that she could sense particles of metal in almost anything and could collect them together very easily without a transmutation circle.

She had heard about becoming a State Alchemist, but she felt extremely reluctant to do so, afraid that she would be tethered to the organization and unable to do as she pleased. However, feeling lonely and bored, Rekannen decided to join. She reasoned to herself that she could always find ways to leave if she liked, and the privileges were too much to totally forget.

Bio: Alphonse was born in the town of Resembool two years after his brother Edward. Alphonse tends to pay more attention to detail in his alchemy but requires an alchemy circle. When their mother passed away Ed and Al studied non stop to bring her back when they finally found out how and tried Al lost his body. Edward then gave up his arm to affix his soul to a suit of armor all Alphonse wants is for his brother to be happy he doesn't care that he is a suit of armor. Alphonse is mostly mistaken as the elder brother because of his size and armor but he is really just a kid who loves his brother and would do just about any thing for him. Al hates violence and fighting but will fight for his friends but most of the time he is much more calm and level headed than his brother he is also kind but can be childish and naive.

Bio:Lust (ラスト, Rasuto?), the "Ultimate Spear", is the first homunculus to be introduced in the series. She is a big-busted woman who primarily works in the shadows, acting as an envoy for her leader in both mediums and encouraging alchemists down her desired path. She is able to extend her fingers to great lengths and can use them to cut through any substance. In the manga, after leading an effort to capture Barry the Chopper, her plans backfire when Roy Mustang infiltrates into the homunculi's secret lair. Though she is able to severely wound him, he sears his wounds shut and kills her by repeatedly setting her on fire.

In the anime, Lust was created when Scar's brother tried to revive his dead lover. Though originally largely the same as her manga counterpart, Lust begins to crave becoming a human as the series progresses. This leads her to defecting from the homunculi and joining sides with Edward Elric under the condition that they help make her human. She is ultimately tracked down by Wrath who, after paralyzing her with a locket that contains strands of hair from her original body, kills her.
