I elect:
Global Communication - The whole of their 76 14 album. (
5 23;
14 31)
It's ambient techno music, extremely relaxing, and very trippy too. There's a lot of good vibrations coming out from it, it just makes you feel good !
Gil Scott Heron - The Revolution Will Not be Televised. (
Home Is Where The Hatred Is;
Pieces of a Man;
Lady Day & John Coltrane)
It's the name of a song, an album, and this compilation that I have if memory serves me right. This guy, along with several other un-named members made some extremely good Soul/Funk/Jazz grooves back in the 60s. You've got beautiful romantic songs, generally funky songs that pick you up, and some that are potent enough to get you down.
Sigur Ròs - ( )
Yes, the album name is just that, two brackets. (
Untitled 8;
Untitled 6It's the most haunting album I've ever heard. It feels like it has a soul that's pining to yours and almost ripping it out of your body it's so good. These guys are from Iceland, and I don't quite know how to qualify their stuff: it's calm, slow, all their songs on this album are continuous crescendos leading to stuff that did move me to tears more than once. If I had to take one album with me to some far away place, it would this, I can just listen to it for hours on end. Basically, it's slow, calm, haunting, sad, but in a resigned sadness, not overflowing waves of grief. Melancholic, if you will. It just touched me ...
John McLaughlin Trio - Que Alegria and his live sets. (
Mother Tongues [live part 1])
John, Mahavishnu Orchestra's guitarist (a band which I heartily recommend as well), Trilok Gurtu, an amazing Indian percussionist who plays cross-legged, so he uses only his hands, but sounds like he's got about four pairs of them, and various bassists. It's very good, calming Jazz/World, done by extremely good musicians, and there doesn't feel like there's any boasting or anything, just people doing their thing. And all three are incredible musicians.
Lunatic Soul - Lunatic Soul (
Lunatic Soul;
Out On a Limb)
A solo project by Riverside's singer, if the name rings any bells. It's a potent mix of Ambient, World and certainly a lot of other stuff. It all feels like resigned sadness, more resigned than Sigur Ròs back up there, and it's a great sound. The guy's voice is beautiful, and the songs just flow through you. Also kudos to the amazing drumming.
Neurosis - A Sun That Never Sets (
From the Hill;
The Tide)
I seem to recall it being called Sludge Metal or something. Imagine Sigur Ròs, now replaced the ethereal, melancholic sound it has with growling, deep, almost hateful, vengeful and simmering anger. The album's just as good, but it's got an overwhelming sense of gloom and despair to it, and the vocals ... Sort of broken-heart-fuelled anger that racks your bones it's that good. It's also very instrumental, with slow looming drums and gravelly guitars.
Pearl Jam - Ten (
Jeremy;
Evenflow)
An awesome album, holding all their classics (Evenflow, Still Alive, Black, Jeremy, etc ...) A great sound for a first damn album ! With the last two songs in that list being extremely beautiful. This is American grunge, 90s I think, and frankly sounds amazing. And the singer is gorgeous (and I'm a guy !).
Pink Floyd - Live at Pompeii (
Careful with that axe Eugene [This'll catch you unaware, it always does.)];
Echoes part 1)
I'd recommend any Pink Floyd, but I especially recommend this set, which is amazing. Mainly, the tracks "Careful with that axe" and "Echoes" just tore me apart, the first thanks to an ear bursting scream from the bassist which just sounds inhumane, and the second for being a gorgeous song. Well, "Careful with that axe" is gorgeous too, trust me, but in a far different way. Floyd are a 80s psychedelic rock band, pioneers of all things trippy, and all in all make a great sound.
Meshuggah - Catch 33 (
In Death - Is Life;
Bleed)
It's ... brutal. Meshuggah are ... Swedish ? I think they've been classified as Math Metal due to hideously and mind-bogglingly complicated song structure and sound. This is all mainly thanks to, first of all, all of them being amazing musicians, but mainly the drummer and bassists who mesh together perfectly to create this brain-imploding band. It's extremely angry, and frankly, I want to hit things when I listen to it (but that's just me) but the musical complexity and how it all still sounds amazing and unique just won me over from the very first song.
Claude Debussy (
Estampes - P agodes;
Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun)
Completely different style ! Impressionist piano and orchestral music, this guy's stuff is simply beautiful. The piano works especially are utterly ephemeral: they're neither here nor there, but they transport you to wherever they're going. The skill this guy must've had too ...
Anyway, sorry for the long list, but there are sooo many great musicians and bands that deserve being lauded somewhere, and I'm just doing my bit. Hopefully, I haven't made too much of a fool of myself ...
