The Grassroots Tournament
Semi-Finals: Whisper vs Aeryn

Match Start: September 6th, 2011 @ 12:00PM EST
Match End: October 6th, 2011 @ 12:00 PM EST
Post Response Limit: 4 days

Selected Stage:

Sylixzan: Serangojo Falls
Overlooking a three thousand foot waterfall is an ancient temple, constructed in eons past. Runic etchings enscribe the twenty five foot walls and the floor the stand upon, both of which are entangled by vines, to remain intact. As a result, the inner area is flooded with sunlight. Because of the area's clear skies, one can easily see the bed of the nearby three foot deep, seven foot wide river, which parts around the temple. The two hundred meter by one hundred fifty meter building remains connected by three stone bridges, all five feet wide.

At the bottom of the waterfall rests a small, grassy island. On it rests a stone altar, upon which stands a lotus with gold petals, which is rumored in legend to be the soul of Serangojo himself. One who equips this flower without damaging it is granted an temporary, yet invincible ward (2 turn duration) which will fend off all physical, magical, mental, and phenomenon. Contestants have been told of the flower's approximate location, but do not know of it's exact whereabouts yet. The flower cannot leave the island it rests on, lest it wither and die, thereby losing it's power.

First Post: Aeryn

The rush of water filled Aeryn's ears as he appeared in the warm sunlight of the temple arena. The silvis took a deep breath of the air, holding his eyes shut for a few seconds and enjoying the brief calm before the fight. He opened his eyes to survey his surroundings - a vast structure stretched out before him, vines covering ancient stone and stretching off and away towards dividing walls. Though there seemed to be little in the way of well defined rooms, though there was the suggestion of there once having been, the remnants of the walls - crumbling and broken - remained to block line of sight intermittently.

Aeryn tilted his head back to look up at the cloudless blue sky, hair drifting slightly in the wind, and flexed his fingers. Instinct told him to draw his sword and ready his shield, but Whisper had made him a challenge. No weapons, no powers. Just the two of them. Aeryn had considered the girl's suggestion over a plateful of food, and decided to accept it. He was the physically stronger of the two of them, and so in theory, her not using her psychic and phasing powers would give him the advantage.

Stepping forwards, Aeryn listened to the crunch of his boot on the vine-covered floor, wondering what this building had once been for. The architecture suggested it had once been grand, and the odd chunk of stone statue implied something spiritual. A temple or a palace - probably the former, considering the location. Aeryn walked to the edge of the side of the temple he had appeared in, placing his hand on the stone of the ruined wall and looking through a collapsed gap out at the river below. Sharp rocks were covered with a shallow layer of rapidly flowing water, before the water abruptly dropped - presumably off of a waterfall. There was a relatively long drop to the island below the structure itself, but there were sections that sloped enough to provide an easy descent. The water didn't look deep - the bed was visible in the sunlight, and the entire area was picturesque. It looked like somewhere off of a postcard.

Turning back away from the view, Aeryn cast his eyes over the temple interior. He couldn't see a lot of the building from where he stood, and so he decided to find a vantage point. Tentatively testing the stone, the silvis gripped a section of ruined wall and hauled himself up. The irregular structure provided plenty of foot and handholds, and soon Aeryn was climbing up and onto the top of the wall - where once there would have been a ceiling to stop him, that now lay in chunks all over the floor below. Taking a seat on the edge of what had once been a room's corner, Aeryn cast his eyes over the rest of the temple, and waited.

"Let's see how well this goes for you without that fucking sword, and a bar full of ignorant idiots to interrupt us." Aeryn muttered, "I might not be able to kill you for good here, but I'll be damned if I don't make you hurt for what you did..."

Meanwhile...

Just outside the temple ruins a brief disturbance filled the still air as Whisper flashed into existence. It took her a moment to orient herself, but she quickly noted the lack of her opponent. While normally it would be a simple task to locate him, a challenge was a challenge, and she would abide by her own conditions of combat. No weapons. No Magic.

Unable to discern the location of her opponent, given the vast size of the arena, Whisper instead opted to seek out a suitable playing field. Aeryn would find her no doubt, she simply needed to make herself available. With this goal in mind, it was the sound of the waterfall that drew her like a moth to a flame. The raw power of the river, coupled with the deadly height of the waterfall appealed to Whisper's aesthetic tastes within her current state of mind. Dangerous and beautiful, the perfect stage for a deadly dance.

Making her way towards the waters edge, Whisper stood overlooking the rapids where the two shallow rivers converged into the waterfall. There was still no sign of Aeryn, for while she was seeking out the river, he was climbing his way up the temple walls. Picking her way across the rocks, Whisper moved with all the grace and finesse of a dancer, springing from stone to stone with unfaltering balance despite the slick surface and the cool rush of water that licked at her canvas boots. Reaching the edge of the falls she took a moment to survey the view from atop an outcropping of rock.

From that height it wouldn't be discernible that the flower lay just below (not that jumping from such a height would be particularly healthy even had she known) but the view was a remarkable sight to behold regardless, and well worth the trip here all by itself, tournament or no. Though, as she stood there, a part of her urged her to just step forward. to take the fall and let the river overtake her. It wasn't a suicidal thought, so much as a mildly unhealthy interest in the raw beautify of nature, and of the power that lay beneath those currents. A beauty and strength to match her own perhaps. The vain thought brought a brief twitch of a smile to her lips as she waited for Aeryn to locate her.

From his vantage point atop the walls of the ruined temple, Aeryn gazed out across the expanse with narrowed eyes. The sunlight was bright, forcing him to squint and hold a hand up to shield his vision. He knew he should've packed sunglasses. Well, no, that was a lie. Elante had said he should pack sunglasses, and he'd been the one saying "It's space! That's like, the darkest place there is!"

Hindsight was a bitch, though, and the silvis would make do. He spun around, still not having seen Whisper appear, and gazed instead out over the view on the other side of the temple behind him. The river roared away into shallow rapids once it passed the island upon which the temple sat, and disappeared over a sheer edge. The rainforest-like foliage to either side of the river was still aside from a gentle rustle in the breeze, but it wasn't the leaves that Aeryn was interested in.

The slight figure of Whisper, making her nimble way over the rocks of the rapids, was what drew his eye. Scowling, Aeryn flexed his fingers. So she was going to play the 'let's make Aeryn fall off a waterfall' game, was she? Well she would be disappointed. If there was one thing that Aeryn was good at, it was adapting to harsh scenery. Well, perhaps there were some other things, like eating, punching things, and running his mouth ... but adapting to pointy rocks was definitely one of the things he was good at. The Silver Dimension had a lot of pointy rocks.

Aeryn glanced down at the floor of the temple, and with a hop, he jumped down to land in a crouch, before rising to his feet and making his way down towards the rapids. He took the slope down to the island at a slide, reaching the level ground at a run before slowing to a more reasonable pace. "Aims of the day..." he murmured to himself, "Number one, punch bitch in face. Number two, don't fall in the water. Number three, punch bitch in face and make her fall in the water. Potential number four, hit bitch with a rock. Bitches do not love rocks."

Stepping out onto the first of the rocks that would take him to Whisper's position, Aeryn made no efforts to disguise his approach - he was more than ready to react to Whisper having a change of heart about her little game, but he wanted her to be facing his fist when it hit her. Pushing her off of a waterfall, whilst amusing, would be far less satisfying. Besides, knowing her, she'd say it didn't count and float back up anyway.

As the sound of Aeryn's movements caught Whisper's ear, she at first didn't turn. Rather, tilting her head inquisitively to one side she shifted her gaze skyward as a flicker of a smile graced her lips once more.

“This place, it's beautiful isn't it?” she mused thoughtfully as she turned slowly to face Aeryn.

Slipping the strange wand like device free of her sash along with her pouch of crystals, she held each object loosely looped around a finger to either side of her in an almost careless gesture.

“Well, what shall it be then? Given thought to my... proposal?” she inquired innocently as the items dangled precariously within her grasp. A simple shift of her hands would have both objects plummeting over the waterfall and into the river below. However, even within her whimsical state of mind, she hardly trusted Aeryn and her glance towards to his sword would make note of that distrust.

"Or perhaps you would prefer something a little more... phallic," she purred. Men did like their swords after all.

Whatever Aeryn's choice, the nature of this battle, was now in the sylvis' hands.

"I'd say it was picturesque, if it didn't have such a mar on its beauty in the form of a flighty bitch standing on the waterfall." Aeryn replied, coming to a halt on a rock a few metres away from Whisper. A chain of four platforms - three relatively small and one larger, with jumpable gaps between - directly connected the two unsubmerged stones the combatants stood on, whilst others were dotted around erratically.

The silvis' eyes followed Whisper's to the sword at his hip, and he shifted his hand to pull the blade loose with a lazy swing, metal scraping on leather and glinting in the sunlight as it was exposed. "You want a no-tricks fight? Fine. But there's not a cat's chance in Extinction I'm leaving my weapons behind for you to kick off of the waterfall."

Aeryn moved his free hand up to lift his shield off of his back and gripped the strap, cracking his neck. "I'll take that fancy spear on if you want an 'old fashioned' fight - no magic, as agreed. I want the satisfaction of sticking a sword through you. You have that one up on me already."

Regardless of Whisper's decision, Aeryn deftly hopped forwards onto the larger of the rocks connecting them, the roaring water splashing underneath as he traveled through the air. Spray as it broke against the rocks flew up to lightly spatter on the silvis' legs, earning an irritable glance downwards. "Let's get this done with before my laundry bill skyrockets from having to spin dry my entire outfit before the next fight..."

Aeryn's proposal was met with a moment of contemplation before Whisper at last nodded, her smile widening. Lowering her left hand, the pouch of crystals slipped free to splash into the water at her feet before being swept away with the current and over the waterfall.

Slipping into a guarded crouch with her left leg slightly extended forward and her right side slightly turned away, Whisper kept her left hand in a readied position while her right hand moved into a shielded position opposite her body from Aeryn.

As she took up her battle stance and her right hand tightened around the wand like device in her grasp, the enchantments over the spear deactivated and the object grew into a five foot double-ended spear, angled behind her back.

However, she couldn't rely fully on the advantage of her weapons reach, not with such treacherous footing and limited maneuverability to worry about. With that in mind, her grasp remained on the mid point of the spear haft for the moment, to allow for shorter and more precise swings if need be. However, positioned behind her in such a manner, she could easily flow the spear into a powerful arcing swing, a short jab, or simply a parry. It would offer Aeryn little insight into how she might move next.

“Mmmm. You hate me so very much. To see and feel the look in your eyes, and your heart, while you run me through... the thought is... intoxicating...” she murmured. Let it never be said that anyone ever claimed Whisper to be mentally stable, especially within her current state of mind.

This point would be driven home by the fact that her words were far from mocking in nature. No, she always did have a quirky obsession with something a close friend had once dubbed 'a dance of death'. Whisper had always said that it would take a dancer to defeat her, someone able to lure her into the passion and the emotion of her own demise, to see it to its completion, no matter the cost.

Unfortunately, Aeryn was not that individual. As tempting as the thought, Aeryn was as much an ox as she was a dancer. He was not the one to dance her final dance. As clarity took hold of her once again, that smug smirk of hers returned and she locked her eyes on his.

“Ready when you are,” she stated simply.

"You talk too much, and that's coming from me." Aeryn said, rolling his eyes, "Or maybe it's what you say that makes it so dull. Like, I swear we have the same conversation every time we meet. You're all 'Aeryn you're so angry, it's delicious!' and I'm all 'Fuck you bitch' and you're all 'mmmmm' and I'm all 'My god woman stop being creepy'." The silvis paused, "And on that note, stop being so fucking creepy. Get off on someone else's hatred for you, I'm sure there are plenty of people for you to choose from."

Shaking his head, Aeryn returned his attention to the fight. "Alright, whatever. It's killing time." he muttered, stepping forwards warily. Cracking his neck as he stepped onto the rock adjacent to Whisper's perch, he moved forwards at a slow pace before pausing for a brief moment, eyes flicking to the spear and back. Apparently throwing caution to the wind, Aeryn darted forwards, his sword cutting through the air in a fearsome lunge.

Of course the swing back of his arm and the angry grunt of effort were all for show. Aeryn's sword was for all intents and purposes, weightless in his hand. What looked like a powerful thrust, with little chance to pull back due to the momentum of the sword, was actually nothing more than a feint. The strike was aimed for Whisper's waist, arcing in from the side in a difficult-to-dodge but far from elaborate maneuver. It seemed a perfectly reasonable opening blow, albeit one that appeared to leave Aeryn open for an easy counter-attack. In reality, Aeryn was poised to pull out of the thrust at the first sign of Whisper moving into an attack.

"I hope the reality of being stabbed lives up to your expectations, you whore." Aeryn hissed.

Aeryn's words served to raise Whisper's brow inquisitively as they seemed to lack basis to her. She and Aeryn had a history, there was no denying that, but this tournament was the first time she had approached him within this personae, and she was quite certain that never before had they had such a conversation of the nature he accused her of repeating. Not even in their earlier encounters back at the lobby.

Aeryn however... Bitch. Whore. Slut. Traitor. How she had missed the old names he had dubbed her. But amused or not, she was quite certain she hadn't had a conversation with the fiery silvis that didn't revolve around him spewing profanities in her direction.

“Peculiar words, from one with such a limited vocabulary...” she retorted as Aeryn moved in to attack.

Something was off about the attack though, something she keenly picked up on. The weightlessness of the sword meant that show or not, the genuine physical exertion wasn't there. The strain of muscles, the whitening of his knuckles from the weight of the sword should have been evident. His movements were fluid and smooth, with little apparent resistance against gravity. Of course it would take more than a hunch to pinpoint the exact nature of the enchantment, but she could definitely tell that something wasn't quite what it seemed.

For now though, she would take the bait, if only to discover for herself the nature of what she was dealing with. Stepping forward with her right leg and bringing her spear around to bear, she grasped the haft with both hands and spun back towards Aeryn to add more oomph to the blow. By bringing the weapon up and around in a vicious right-to-left horizontal arc for the side of Aeryn's shield arm it would hopefully serve to knock him off balance even if he blocked or parried it, seeing as she was stationary and well braced for the impact, whereas he was moving and more prone to slipping. With her marginally longer reach she intended to interrupt him from reaching her with his sword while putting him on the defensive.

The swing left her spear extended forward with her right arm, but still strongly within her grasp and braced levelly against her arm and the left side of her body to keep from overswinging. The new stance would allow for a quick reversal to utilize the other end of her weapon if necessary, or simply to pull back and follow the blow up with a downward sweep, either for Aeryn's legs, or to parry the sword should the silvis make it past and into range to follow up with his lunge.

“For one who speaks his mind so openly, one would think you could find material that isn't two years old...” she added with a mischievous twitch of her lips.

Aeryn was far from one to bother keeping much in the way of tricks up his sleeve when he saw an opportunity to use them early on. Whilst another might have kept their weapon's enchantments concealed, until such a time as they could bring them about in a nasty surprise, Aeryn thought it would just look rather silly to be blatantly avoiding using his shield. Easily shifting out of the feint, Aeryn rotated so as to be able to bring his shield up to intercept Whisper's strike. When the weapon impacted with the enchantment, the force and momentum of the blow would all be reflected back into the spear itself, hopefully throwing her wildly off balance.

Without a moment's hesitation, Aeryn darted forwards for a second time, thrusting his sword forwards for Whisper's now-exposed left side, aiming to stab her just below her ribs in the side of her body. The strike was as fluid and effortless as the previous one, making it far quicker than any ordinary swordsman's attack - though the fact that Whisper had already observed something odd about the sword would have left her wary of unexpected moves from it, no doubt. Hoping to get within the effective arc of Whisper's weapon, Aeryn stepped forwards, following through with the thrust to swing his shield's edge towards the girl's face. The bladed edge was aimed to catch her straight in the bridge of her nose.

"I like swearing." Aeryn stated flatly, "And I can't help it that so many expletive insults fit you like a glove. Would you prefer 'scum', or perhaps 'backstabber'? There's a limited niche of descriptive words for you, Whisper."

Re: GR2011: Whisper vs Aeryn (R3) ( )

Postby Tiko on Sat Oct 01, 2011 2:02 pm

As metal struck metal with a resounding clang, it would be evident that Aeryn's weapons weren't the only ones with enchantments. The brief point of contact resulted in a thin film of ice rapidly spreading across the shield, heavily weighting the object down. However, the reflective nature of Aeryn's enchantment meant that the contact was maintained for only a fraction of a moment. It would take more contact to thoroughly encase the object in ice enough to make it unusable, but even still, the unexpected additional weight would likely throw Aeryn's timing off with utilizing it.

Meanwhile, the benefits of maintaining a controlled stance and swing would be evident as Whisper was already braced for the recoil of her strike. Although the recoil was stronger than she expected, rather than throw her off balance, it simply pushed the spear back up in the very same direction she was planning to move it in regardless. This served to speed up her next maneuver, granting her the time necessary to deflect the incoming sword, despite Aeryn's own speed.

Shifting her spear back up and down across her body she brought it around in a swift and controlled sweep motion, from left to right. However, rather than aiming for Aeryn's feet, it was set to hook his sword and push it down and to her right. Extended across his body in such a manner, it would likely make it awkward to follow through with the shield swing without having to reach over his own arm and leave himself in a very vulnerable position.

Provided the parry was successful, it would conclude with her spear held firmly in her grasp - the mid point grasped in her right hand atop her right shoulder, while her left hand gripped it near the spear head, extended towards Aeryn. A simple downward strike brought the spear up and over to descend down towards Aeryn's right shoulder, hopefully at an awkward angle to parry while his sword was too far off to the side to properly utilize. As before, the maneuver would leave her in a controlled and balanced stance, the spear firmly grasped in both hands, her right arm extended, and her left hand resting near her hip.

[However, should Aeryn have gone through with the shield punch regardless of the parry, rather than bringing her spear down fully, she would stop the maneuver halfway and raise her arms up to intercept his shield edge against the haft of her spear with an upwards push. Provided she had an opening due to his sword being deflected to the right and his shield being pushed overhead, she would bring a booted foot up and aim a kick for his gut to knock him backwards and off balance . Otherwise, she would simply make the block and stand her ground.]

No further words came from Whisper, but there was a fire and a passion in her eyes that spoke volumes. It was battles like this that caught her heart up and made it race with exhilaration. A battle wasn't a battle without emotion driving it, and people like Aeryn provided no end of emotional fuel.

Furthermore, Whisper's dancer nature was rapidly becoming apparent. Every motion and movement flowed gracefully, adjusting to Aeryn as fluidly as the water beneath their feet. Each new stance left her poised and balanced, with all the grace and athleticism that she was well renowned for. Furthermore, each new pose offered her graceful transitions into new attacks with minimal effort on her part. Beautiful and yet disciplined so as to not leave any movement without purpose.

As soon as it became apparent that the recoil from his shield had not provided him as much of an opening as he had expected, Aeryn snatched his hand back away from the attempted parry. Even intended attacks could become feints without weight or momentum to commit him to a strike, and Aeryn was taking advantage of that fully. The sweeping parry would miss his sword, but it left little in the way of an opportunity to step in - the spear was in an easy place to use should he attempt a strike, and the added weight of the ice made his shield unwieldy enough.

Kept at Whisper's range, Aeryn was forced to deal with her follow-up strike to his shoulder. However, rather than attempting to parry it, Aeryn simply shifted his body to the side, rotating slightly in a hop to avoid the swing. Even as he moved, he was arcing his sword around, aiming to chop it down heavily onto Whisper's right hand on the spear, hopefully at least knocking the weapon downwards if not contacting her hand itself.

Aiming to use the potential momentary respite from the spear's usefulness, Aeryn made to sweep around and flank Whisper, slamming his shield forwards in a controlled bash towards the side of her head. Opting to use the flat front of the shield as opposed to its bladed side, Aeryn hoped to foil any intercept attempts with the enchantment, whilst at the same time not opening himself up to counter-attack as much as a swing would have.

"Lost for words? Or am I making you try too hard to focus on speaking?" Aeryn hissed.

Re: GR2011: Whisper vs Aeryn (R3) ( )

Postby Tiko on Sat Oct 01, 2011 3:49 pm

Despite the speed benefits of Aeryn's sword, the chopping motion was simply not as precise as Whisper's more subtle movements, and it was a simple matter to withdraw her left arm while lowering her hand, taking the spear with it. The new position left the spear angled downwards, where she could thrust it out towards his foot, again working to keep Aeryn from getting close enough to use his shield to simply out bludgeon her.

Upon the watery and slick surface, even if it didn't force Aeryn backwards, it would rapidly ice over the already slick rock beneath Aeryn's feet upon contact, leaving his footing less than ideal as he danced across the rocks to try and get around behind her.

As the pair weaved and danced, Aeryn's words simply brought a twitch of amusement to Whisper's lips. “I'm simply savoring the moment,” she purred.

Keeping in motion, Whisper spun and ducked low, letting the shield sail past over her head while she herself kept her spear moving along the ground towards Aeryn's feet or legs, whatever she could catch up with the blade to force him to keep moving back away from her on the icy surface. Though, care would need to be taken that she didn't overdue it and compromise her own footing. Especially with the unfortunate situation that her back was now to the waterfall, giving her no backwards maneuverability.

As Aeryn circled around to try and flank Whisper, he was easily able to nimbly hop away from the stab towards his foot. The ice that spread outwards from where the spear hit the rock, however, did cause him some concern. He couldn't afford a slip and fall - it would likely spell the end of him, considering the ease with which Whisper could stick that spear through him since it was double-ended.

"Savoring your last moments, more like ..." Aeryn hissed in retort, barely able to hear Whisper over the clamor of the rushing water. She was vulnerable now - between him and the waterfall's edge. He only needed one good strike and it would be over. As a result, he went in for the blow with his shield, but as Whisper ducked into a sweep, he made a split-second decision that it was time to go all-in.

The controlled bash with the shield was easy to pull away from to enable him to avoid the sweep - throwing his weight forwards and bringing his knee up as he jumped over the spear, aiming to slam his knee into Whisper's face and follow through, attempting to shove her to the ground with his weight. His sword was brought down in an attempt at a brutal pommel-strike to the top of Whisper's head, even as he used his shield to try and push her backwards.

Of course, Aeryn was more than aware that this rather imprecise and committal move - and so he was fully prepared to cheat if it went badly.

Aeryn's words had Whisper's pulse quickening, not from fear, but rather from anticipation. The lure of defeat was always there in the back of her mind, ever present. It was capable of taking hold of her and drawing her in like a moth to flame if she weren't careful. It was the lure of a dance she hadn't danced before, a dance that demanded form, and expression. A dance that would spell her end...

But no, Aeryn was not the one to dance her last dance. “Perhaps, but not today,” she replied with a chillingly serious note to it.

As Aeryn lunged towards her, she abruptly sacrificed the reach of her spear by jerking the weapon back towards her. However, crouching as she was, proved to be both a blessing and a detriment all in one. Low to the ground, her center of gravity was solid and her footing sure, sure enough to brace against the likely hood of Aeryn sending them both tumbling over the waterfall. Unfortunately, it also meant that the back end of her spear would get hung up on the ground behind her if she tried to raise the forward point too high.

With this in mind, she aimed for something lower, but suitably crippling, the groin area of his inner thigh. Even a nick of an artery would spell disaster for Aeryn, and his forward momentum paired with a forceful thrust of Whisper's spear would in theory, leave him brutally impaled.

Whisper's stab would have caused Aeryn some serious trouble at this point, were it not for his 'ace in the hole', as it were, in the form of the amulet he wore around his neck. The subtle shielding that Heart's Promise provided was enough to cause the spear to do little more than slash across his leg as it was forced to slide over his flesh rather than impale it. This left Aeryn with a painful but light surface wound on his inner thigh, with nothing vital severed. It also, however, left him with a spear between his legs - something he was rather acutely aware of.

His charge was not halted, however, though he was forced to bring his knee down to prevent Whisper from simply whipping the spear upwards. What was originally a strike turned into more of a tackle, as Aeryn attempted to shove Whisper downwards and send them both splashing into the water just feet from the waterfall. Aeryn's legs were clamped together around the spear awkwardly, attempting to keep the blade out of contact with him, though the lack of any way to get any momentum behind a strike meant that it was unlikely Whisper could penetrate his amulet's shield in this position.

Should he succeed in shoving Whisper to the ground, Aeryn would bring his shield down in a forceful blow to Whisper's face, the bladed edge more than enough to cause some serious damage, especially considering it would likely slam her head into the rocks below at the same time.

If, however, Whisper somehow escaped the grappling tackle, Aeryn's options would be limited, and he would attempt to snatch a grip on Whisper's spear with his sword hand - keeping the weightless weapon held loosely whilst using the majority of his grip to prevent Whisper from doing anything with her weapon.

"Okay, that was dangerously close to stabbing me in the balls, you bitch, I need those!" Aeryn exclaimed angrily, "That's just not cool!"

As the spear sliced Aeryn's skin, the enchantment would take effect once more. The blade had only grazed his flesh, but it was enough to bypass his shield and rapidly spread ice through the wound via the graze. The likely outcome would be extensive and painful internal numbing of his thigh and groin area as well as spreading ice across the surface, hindering mobility and painfully freezing the flesh. The surface damage would be very much akin to a rapid onset of frost bite, albeit with more bite.

Furthermore, Whisper's position low to the ground proved to be an asset once more. It allowed her to simply roll onto her back, her left foot coming up to catch and hoist Aeryn over top of her and off the waterfall. The spear caught between his legs would add further force behind the throw, and in all likelihood, send him well clear of the rocks. Unfortunately, as close as she was to the edge, Whisper herself would be sent tumbling backwards as well.

However, unlike Aeryn, Whisper would be close enough to make a desperate grab as she slid over the side. Dangling precariously by one hand, she cast a look down below, but the sudden onset of vertigo hit her hard and she nearly lost her grip. Snapping her eyes closed tightly her stomach lurched and her breath caught in her throat as she tried to pull herself together.

For the first time since the fight, her exhilaration turned to a moment of panic. It was an instinctive panic, seeing as she could well survive the fall if hard pressed. But the reflexive fear that comes with an unexpected fall is a powerful thing and coupled with the roar of water all around her she was thoroughly disoriented. Atop the rock, the river had parted to either side, but below it, she was quickly soaked by the cold spray of water cascading down either side of her precarious position.

To add to the situation, she had lost hold of her spear in the fall which left her suitably unarmed should Aeryn survive.

There were certain places on a man where ice was not desirable. The forehead? Soothing. The chest? Chilling. But the groin? "FFFFFF-"

Aeryn's strangled cry of pain was cut off with a yelp as his far-from coordinated attack was easily turned into a throw by Whisper. Despite his greater weight, Aeryn's own momentum worked against him, and he found himself lifted up and over Whisper's body by her legs. Realisation turned into panic, and as he was about to disappear over the edge, only two words came from the silvis' mouth. "Oh fuck!"

And then he was in freefall. Water sprayed around him as he tumbled head over heels through the air, and in a similar fashion to Whisper, he lost control of his senses for a few moments of horror. But then he realised that falling was sort of an easily solvable problem.

Sweeping his arms out to the side, a flash of white light shot outwards from Aeryn and around to underneath him. His feet touched down on a platform of energy and with a swooping arc he shot out of the waterfall and out of his descent, soaring back upwards again. Spinning in midair, his eyes locked onto Whisper's dangling form. "Screw the rules," he muttered, "I have a fucking hoverboard."

With that, Aeryn shot forwards, the board spinning in midair and sweeping around before he launched the disc of energy towards Whisper like a sawblade. The attack had more than enough power behind it to deeply scythe into Whisper's back - not cutting straight through her, but leaving her severely wounded. The momentum of Aeryn's flight had him sailing over her head, landing deftly in the water a few feet away from her and spinning on the spot.

Or at least, that had been the plan. In actual fact, the frozen numbness in his thigh meant that his left leg practically gave way under him as he landed, and he stumbled forwards with a distinct lack of grace, barely avoiding falling face-first into the water. Annoyed, Aeryn turned awkwardly on the spot to face Whisper.

"Buh bye." he said, winking, before thrusting an arm forwards and sending a burst of force towards her, aimed to launch her forcefully away from the waterfall, and hopefully break her face in the process.

Dangling from her rocky outcrop, Whisper's knuckles had turned white from the strain of holding on. Everything inside her told her to just let it go, succumb to the fall and let the river take her. But instinct warred against her and she held tight, unwilling to relinquish her precarious grip on the slick rock. It wasn't until she sensed movement behind her that she was able to shake the fear that gripped and immobilized her. She couldn't see Aeryn, which was in itself a deadly situation, and so she took a deep breath and simply... let go.

Overhead, Aeryn's energy disc struck nothing but rock and his awkward landing would likely slow him up from immediately pursuing her, but Whisper never saw it as the water swallowed her from view and washed her away. It was exactly as she had imagined it earlier atop the waterfall. The sense of freedom, of falling, and the roar of water all around her. It was bliss.

However, she was still lucid enough to shake herself out of her nearly delirious state to rapidly envelope herself in a telekinetic bubble at the last minute to try and slow her velocity before she struck the water. It served to both lessen and disperse the impact of what would normally have been a fatal fall. Though, buffeted by the crashing water, she was driven to the bottom of the river bed where she tumbled along trying to right herself. It was an oddly surreal experience, almost like being in the safety of a cocoon, warm and comforting.

Letting the current carry her away from the worst of the waterfall she caught sight of her pouch of crystals, the drawstring snagged upon a rock. Grasping it in her hand she kicked off the riverbed and broke the surface of the water with a loud gasp as the last of her telekinetic shield dissipated. Chilled to the bone and sopping wet, the moment of peace was shattered and the chaos of the frothing river overtook her once more.

Fortunately there was land near at hand and she dragged herself up out of the water onto a small grassy island where she rested a moment on her hands and knees. She couldn't afford to rest for long though, as she was sure Aeryn wouldn't be far behind her. And while she had reclaimed her pouch of crystals, her spear had been swept further downstream and was nowhere to be seen.

With Whisper's disappearance over the edge, Aeryn had a moment's reprieve to deal with the icing over of his leg. Pressing his hand against the wound, he sent a carefully controlled rush of heat into it, melting the ice and warming the wound. It burned slightly, but he was careful enough that it caused nothing in the way of damage. With that done, Aeryn flexed the leg - it was still slightly numb, but it was better. You couldn't fix frostbite just by heating up, but since this wasn't exactly frostbite, it was a bit more effective.

Casually wondering if he'd be lucky enough to find that Whisper had been unable to catch herself due to the waterfall, and deciding that it was probably unlikely, Aeryn then made a run for the waterfall and dived gracefully off of it for a second time. The silvis shot through the air swiftly, arms held to his side to make himself more aerodynamic. For several seconds he simply fell, trying to use the speed of gravity to give Whisper less time to prepare for his arrival, but eventually the ground started to seem a little too close, and he caught himself on two bars of slowly descending energy, steadily slowing his fall before landing on a small island in a controlled running stop.

The sound of the roaring waterfall was slightly louder now that they were at its base, but Aeryn could still hear the gasping and spluttering of Whisper as she recovered on the shore nearby. He took the chance to get the lay of his surroundings - the island was relatively small, he could see to the other side of it from where he stood, and populated with sparse, small foliage. There was clearly man-made stone in a pathway across the island, overgrown and cracked, leading to a small stone structure in the middle of the island - an altar with an oddly coloured lotus upon it.

And that clicked with Aeryn's memory. "Well hello there..." he mused, thinking back to the information screen that had accompanied the announcement of the round's pairings, speaking of a sacred flower that would provide a temporary shield. Knowing that it wouldn't take Whisper long to figure out the same thing, Aeryn shot forwards, extending an arm out to carefully scoop the flower up in a hand-construct of energy. If successful, the flower would quickly be brought to him, activating its enchantment with a glimmer of light.

Aeryn turned on the spot, grinning at Whisper and sweeping his arms out. "Come at me, ho!"
