Round 1: Whisper vs Hamster Warrior With No Name

Match Start: June 6th, 2011 @ 9:00PM
Match End: July 5th, 2011 @ 9:00PM

Post Response Limit: 4 days
First Post: Whisper

Stage Description:
The lobby's combat arena, however spacious (half a mile in diameter), is still not large enough to accommodate for moving battles. As such, the contestants will be placed in a barrier slightly smaller than the arena (600m diameter), which will "move" through locations as the fight progresses. Terrain is simulated to be as real as possible, and is equivalent in all aspects except for the way which it was created for fight purposes.

Turns 1-3:
The fighters will start at a location nearly identical to Sylixzan's Cloud Plains. The clouds are completely solid (as there is nowhere to fall to), and vary in altitude (slightly, no more than 3 feet above the rest) and size, although they are all interconnected. The visibility is good, although the weather is slightly chilly.

Turns 4-6:
The stage will slowly progress into an asteroid surface, littered with craters of varying sizes. There is oxygen, since you're in the lobby, and stars will be simulated as well. Obviously good weather (lobby) and decent visibility.

Turns 7-9:
Your asteroid will crash land (with you completely unaffected since the physics won't be simulated at all) onto the Planet Gxinit, where you will encounter massive lilly pads which float over liquid neon (which cannot be consumed by normal humans, so try not to swim).

Turns 10-end:
Finally, the liquid neon will bubble up into the air and transform into liquid Helium, where you will find yourselves in Sylixzan's hollow core, but with one major change: gravity does not flow towards a center point. In fact, it is completely the opposite; weight will direct you towards the nearest outer surface of the area (the barrier, which will obviously be covered by various unknown materials and liquid helium).

May the strongest grass blade emerge tallest.

Whisper's eyes were closed as she shimmered into the arena with a soft sigh of breath. Opening them, she briefly scanned the area, both visually and psychically. Mapping out her immediate surroundings with an intricate web-work of telekinetic nudges rapidly created a nearly perfect replica of the arena within her mind. It would take time to map the entirety of it, but she wasn't in any hurry, in fact she didn't even bother drawing her weapon (if the wand like device fastened to her sash could be called a weapon anyways).

The surroundings served to momentarily claim her thoughts, given the simple and yet ethereal beauty of it. Clouds and skies provided her with little in the way to actually work with on a material level and it would limit her ability to manipulate her environment, but it also served to remind her vaguely of the ethereal realm. It was rare for the whimsical and flighty girl to feel a sense of nostalgia but for a moment anyways, she found herself missing the place. However, such thoughts served no use here and she quickly pushed them aside.

Standing there casually, Whisper herself seemed to fit right into the decor, given her petite build, pale skin, white hair and light blue eyes. Outwardly appearing as delicate as the clouds, though inwardly as deceivingly firm as the strange substance beneath her feet. As she awaited her opponent she tilted her head to one side almost inquisitively, an amused smirk tugging at her lips. Hamster warrior with no name? Certainly some great opponent or another had a sense of humor. The thought that her opponent might actually be a hamster wasn't even entertained by her.

The hamster shimmered into the arena with his cheeks chock-full of seeds. After all, when going into combat, one has to be well prepared to face hunger. At least when you've got the metabolism of a hamster, that is. Appearing on top of a particularly flat "plain" upon the clouds, the hamster took a brief look at his surroundings. To him, the ground looked like cotton candy. A pile of giant cotton candy. And hell, he would looove to eat it.

And thus, he did. Within one swift movement he bit into the clouds, only to find that it is actually solid and squeaked in pain as he bit into the hard ground.

Having learned the lesson to not try and eat the ground, the hamster started sniffing around to find his opponent. It was not that hard, really. Especially since there are practically no other living creatures in a 600m radius. Besides, it seemed that his opponent wasn't even that far away from him. Close enough, in fact, for his poor (although better than most hamsters) vision to recognize a few details. It was quite apparent for him that he was facing a woman.

"Hello there, comrade!" he yelled to grab Whisper's attention, " I see that you shall be my adversary in this round!" and ended with a bow. "I am looking forward to the best of sportsmanship and challenge you can offer, comrade!"

Whisper turned at the sound of a voice, her eyes lowering towards the ground as she located its source. No other action was made immediately, save for a brief arch of her brow. This was her opponent? Certainly this had to be a joke of some nature or another...

“You have got to be kidding me,” she stated finally as she moved to rest her hands on her hips. Manners weren't exactly her strong point in her current state of mind and the look she gave the hamster was far from impressed.

Though, perhaps it was merely a deception, and so she carefully scanned the area, both visually, and psychically once again. While her eyes skimmed the immediate area she reached out with her empathy to feel for even the faintest wisp of an emotional presence within the vicinity. However, the careful search turned up no other life-forms aside from the rodent that stood before her. Upon this discovery, Whisper's posture shifted from stunned dismay to outright irritation. Moving her arms from her hips she folded them over her chest looking not at all amused.

“This is absurd, “ she snorted indignantly.

The hamster frowned at his opponent's impolite reply. "I am sorry comrade, were you expecting something more... say, BIG?" he squeaked with a tone of discontent, his tiny arms crossed. "Had I known what you other combatants expect, I might as well have brought my army so we can STACK UP to your EXPECTATIONS!" the rodent continued, yelling so loudly that his tiny face gets red and seeds spew out on every word.

Of course, the hamster quickly realized that he had just said things that were quite... unpleasant. And being a courteous warrior, the hamster quickly recollected his calm and bowed. "I am sorry, comrade, for I have disappointed you. Are you still willing to fight me then, miss...?"

Whisper's eyebrow only raised all the further at the little hamster's temper tantrum, though it did serve to sooth her indignation towards a state of mild amusement.

“Tell you what, you get that toothpick of yours higher than my ankle, and sure, we can fight,” she retorted. “Have at it if you will.”

The thought that the little pest could actually pose any threat to her was utterly beyond comprehension at the moment. Really, if this was what she came all this way to do battle with, she may as well have just stayed home. So confident was she in this belief that she still made no move to arm herself, or even to begin channeling her focus crystals.

The hamster once again bowed. "Let us start then, comrade?" he said as he unsheathed his sword, the mighty(ly small) 'Hamscalibur', the great tooth-picker and cheese-cutter and seed-opener and... other irrelevant stuff.

Within a blink of an eye, the hamster quickly dashed in a rather chaotic, zig-zagging motion in the general direction of Whisper in preparation to launch his first assault at the towering lady. His shield held in front of him, primed to guard against any sudden attacks as he closed his distance. Not that his incredibly tiny 'Hamsguard' can guard against anything significant, but as long as the attack hits the shield the hamster himself is relatively safe. Such a small body is quite light, after all, and won't take any significant damage when thrown away by an attack.

And, just to iterate this one tiny detail, the sword of the hamster was not even once lifted above Whisper's ankle within the round.

As the hamster darted to and fro, Whisper's general state of amusement did not abate. In fact, she opted to have a bit of fun at the hamster's expense. She didn't move from her place, but the space surrounding her (approximately a three foot diameter) wavered ever so subtly from a brief disturbance of the air. Even had the hamster's vision not been so poor, the subtle manifestation of the spherical telekinetic shield would have taken a keen eye to detect while it remained stationary.

If all went as planned, the little fur-ball would likely run smack into what would feel like a solid wall. In addition, while it was normally a taxing ability to try and absorb physical blows, the small size of the hamster likely would result in very little strain being placed on Whisper. That is unless the hamster had more at its disposal than was currently evident. Though admittedly, toying with the little pest wasn't the most honorable or morally sound of tactics. However, from the amused twitch of her lips at the hamsters efforts, that didn't appear rank highly on Whisper's list of concerns at the moment.

Meanwhile, as the bantering and fight progressed (if it could be called that), the arena was shifting and altering around the pair of combatants. Overhead the sky had darkened from clear blue to the black void of space filled with the twinkling lights of stars and distant planets, and the clouds beneath their feet had dissipated to reveal the barren landscape of a cratered asteroid.

The hamster bumped upon the invisible barrier Whisper has produced around her, snout first. He recoiled, squeaking while rubbing his sore nose. "Oomph, what did I crash into, I wonder?" he said rather loudly.

Under him the ground has changed in appearance, no longer fluffy and is instead rugged and harsh. Such a battleground was best for an epic battle, but too bad the battle he was fighting wasn't going to be an epic one.

The hamster waded his tiny arms through the air like a blind mice, until he found where the barrier is. Around three feet from Whisper. "A barrier, comrade?" the hamster once again said, rather loudly, this time looking up towards Whisper's face. The hamster is mostly powerless to infiltrate such a smooth barrier he cannot climb, especially when the ground was too rugged for him to dig into. Instead, the hamster took another option. One most people would never expect...

Nibble on his spare seeds.

After all, there's not much to do when your opponent shuts you off from doing any physical contacts. Might as well eat your lunch.

Whisper rolled her eyes and let out a sigh of exasperation at the hamster's actions. This was an utter waste of her time and she narrowed her eyes at the little furball. The slight disturbance of the air as her telekinetic shield faded back into nonexistence would be all the warning provided that she was going on the offensive.

Discharging one of her three focus crystals she prepared to strike out with a wave of manifested telekinetic force in a single direct attack. The discharged crystal would add a boosted potency to the assault while taking the brunt of the power expenditure in her stead. With the rush of released psychic power she thrust her hand forward to guide her focus into a small but direct blast of telekinetic force about three feet in diameter.

The attack would be all but indiscernible to the untrained eye and should it strike true, it had force enough to fragment the rocky meteor surface that surrounded the hamster, much akin to having a half a ton sledgehammer dropped on its head. Her actions brought a grimace of distaste to her though, for even though it was a tournament and the little pest knew the risks involved, she still had a feeling that she would have a hard time living this down later. Her distaste at the situation was evident even in her attack. There were no flashy displays or finesse present, but rather, simply blunt force and a strong level of impatience for entertaining this match-up.

With her attack completed, the focus crystal affixed to the center of her circlet shimmered and pulsed briefly, much akin to a dying candle flame as they dulled back to their natural state. If all went as planned, the distracted hamster would be paste on the ground and she would be off to her next match. A match, that if the gods smiled on her, would be less of a joke than this one. Though then again, how often did that happen she thought with a wry smirk.

One of the great things about being a hamster is that you have a couple of incredibly sensitive whiskers, allowing one to sense tiny disturbances in the air. Such a seemingly unimportant trait that could easily turn a battle around. As Whisper faded her shield, which was right in front of him, the hamster felt slight ripples moving through the air. Ample warning that his opponent had taken her next move.

Faster than one might expect, the hamster ditched his half-eaten seed, and quickly resumed his halted assault. By the time Whisper had finished her charging, the hamster was right on top of her feet, clinging to her boots tightly and prepared to climb up her legs and, preferably, squirm into her dress once high enough. Standard rodent combat strategy, when you can't take your enemy frontally, take him down from the inside. Good thing the hamster had had experience of applying this strategy quite liberally on the unfortunate customers of a certain bar.

Of course, this position also gave the hamster extra advantage. If Whisper's charged attack were to hit him in this position, Whisper herself would most likely be hit by her own spell. On the other hand, she might be immune to her own spells. At least the scenario of the mage shaking him loose is rather impossible, for something with such small mass and tight grip is incredibly hard to shake off.

As the rodent darted forward, even though it was fast for a rodent, Whisper was likewise fast for a human and her own reflexes kicked in. With her telekinetic web-work laid over the area, her mind picked up on the sudden fluctuation of movement even before her eyes did and she was already in motion before the explosion of dust had cleared from the first attack. Without hesitation she leaped backwards a pace and landed a good four feet behind where she was, while simultaneously tearing the ground up before her in a wide rolling wave of upward telekinetic force that coned out. The spiderweb of cracks would span outwards from her feet to intercept the hamster and make it difficult to simply approach her head on to avoid it as he had the previous attack.

The hamster itself, if caught in the approximately five foot wide zone would be flung high into the air along with the bits of rock and debris. Whisper would follow this up by drawing her right hand back and gathering force to prepare a follow up strike to intercept the hamster mid fall with a second conical blast. However, should the hamster have evaded the wide cone of cracks opening beneath it, then rather than preparing for the follow up combo attack, Whisper would merely arch a brow at the flighty rodent and offer it an almost amused smirk. Perhaps it would provide some amusement after all.

Given her opponents small size and substantial lack of weight, these broad area attacks were feasible without too great of a drain on her reserves, even without drawing on her focus crystals to power them. An attack of similar proportions for something human sized, would have had to be over a hundred feet in diameter – well beyond even her own telekinetic limitations.

The hamster, of course, was unable to get out of the extremely large area of effect of the spell. Three feet was okay, but five was simply cruel. What he did accomplish though, was to take the brunt of the impact with his shield, sending him up flying but not out of control. In fact, the hamster managed to intercept the blast at the right angle to propel himself towards Whisper at high speeds.

The hamster, at the time flying towards Whisper, once again held his shield in front of him in case his opponent tried anything funny while he was still soaring like a flying squirrel. Not only that, he also held his sword out in a lunging position, so that in the case he actually managed to reach Whisper he would immediately do some damage with that metal toothpick.

Of course, if Whisper were to do her follow up attack, the hamster's momentum would be at least nullified. Worst case, the hamster would be pushed to a greater distance than he were to start with.

As the combat progressed, the arena surroundings were further shifting around the pair and the meteor that they stood upon had descended into the atmosphere of a simulated planet Gxinit. An amused smirk playing at Whisper's lips and she widened her stance while thrusting her open palm forwards towards the incoming ball of fluff. Even with the poor visibility from the dust in the air, she seemed capable of detecting the rodent's exact position.

The rodent's shield would offer it some protection, but the hamster would still need to withstand the reverberating force that would travel through the shield and into its wielder. A force that was further amplified by the hamsters own actions to accelerate the velocity at which it flew towards her. It would be akin to being struck by a battering ram, and in theory the blow would fragment the tiny bones in the hamsters arm, if not outright rupture its internal organs.

And with that thought, the buildup of energy was released in a focused blast from Whisper's hand to intercept the flying rodent. As the attack erupted outwards, it shattered the bits of rock filling the air and added shrapnel to the primary threat of the blunt force. Meanwhile, simultaneous to her attack, a second collision would take place as the plummeting meteor collided with the planets surface. The physics weren't simulated outside of the background visual effects, but the resulting display was impressive none the less.

Unfortunately for Whisper though, the surroundings had altered too greatly and too rapidly for her telekinetic web-work to keep an accurate layout drawn within her mind. Beneath her feet, the solid ground of the meteor had been replaced with giant lily pads that shifted unsteadily upon a brilliant neon red liquid, and to make matters worse, the brilliant neon glow hindered her visual perception as well. Fortunately though, given the small size of her opponent, if her blow had been successful, then the animal would likely have been thrown well clear of the area. Certainly far enough to not be an immediate threat while she tried to relocate it visually.

However, had her attack not succeeded in intercepting the hamster, then the brief moment of visual and psychic vulnerability would mean that the hamster would strike her open palm.

It was with a devastating blow that Whisper's attack struck true and fragmented the bits of rock and stone into a deadly spray of shrapnel while sending the hamster sailing through the air and into the distance. However, should the small rodent have survived both the impact and the jagged shards of rock, then its small size would work in its favor. Having brought her other arm up to shield her face and eyes from the cloud of dust caused by the shattered rocks, Whisper had managed to momentarily lose sight of her opponent.

Scowling, Whisper scanned her surroundings for the rodent, though there was a good chance it wouldn't have survived what she had just inflicted upon its tiny body. That thought wasn't lost on her, but it wouldn't hurt to be sure and so she began to rebuild her telekinetic web-work over the area. It would take time to rebuild a full layout, but bit by bit she began to piece together the strange terrain in a manner almost akin to sonar. Only rather than sound waves, she sent out simple telekinetic nudges and pulses to begin formulating a detailed picture in her head.

Unless otherwise disturbed, she would continue to broaden the zone of her search outwards from herself until she either relocated the hamster, or spotted it visually. All the while she searched, her scowl remained evident upon her face. This whole ordeal was a complete and utter waste of her time for sure and if fortune was on her side, this match-up would be over and she could return to the lobby.

Winner: Tiko.

Given that this completely escaped my mind, there will be no full write-up this round. Maybe next.
