Helpful Tips and Suggestions for ALL Roleplayers. ( )

Postby Akita on Wed Nov 04, 2009 12:16 am

So, you've probably had some questions on what the best way to RP is. Well, to be honest, there is NO right or wrong way to RP. As long as it's enjoyable to you, your RP buddies, and of course, does not go against chat/forum/site rules, then you are RPing the right way.

Always try to make RP something you can have fun with. There are storylines, random encounters, new encounters, etc. This helps us get to know each other through RP, and help better ourselves for the future. It is definitely essential to RP to your best ability.

Here are a couple tips and suggestions I'd like to share with you all:

[x]-1-[x] Try to be descriptive enough.
*Being descriptive in forum or chat roleplay helps the other user, or your RP buddy to understand the concept of your post, and be able to build a visual image of the situation in their mind. We are using words, not pictures. You should try to paint a picture in the minds of your readers; thus, giving your RP posts an accurate description and explanation that is easy to understand, and visualize, as well as relate to.

[x]-2-[x] Utilize grammar.
*Using good grammar is also an important part of any kind of writing. Although some people may either be too lazy, or just not that good at grammar, it is always a good thing to try. If people are not able to understand your posts, how will they understand the concept of the RP? If you were to post something that has tons of misspelled words, to the point where it was almost impossible to read or understand, people may want to stray away from you and find someone who has a more "literate" side. Remember: There are always ways to improve grammar. If you feel you are the only one with bad grammar, take a second look around. There are plenty out there with your problem, and us mentors, mods, and admins are always here to help.

[x]-3-[x] Don't over-do yourself.
*Basically, what I would call "over-doing yourself," is just by posting something with like every other word that was looked up in the thesaurus, and makes absolutely no sense. There are tons of different ways to try and explain the situation, surroundings, etc., without having to go into serious detail. You don't need to describe the sun as "a massive ball of fire raging with flames." Just...call it the sun, we'll know what you're talking about.

[x]-4-[x] Don't be redundant.
*Like I mentioned earlier, grammar is essential in the majority of RPs. Using a word an excessive amount of time is totally unnecessary. Try to use various terms to describe what you're talking about in your posts. For example, say, if you wanted to describe a woman's long brown hair. What you could do is this:

The thick locks of hair that laid flat against her head flowed all the way past her shoulder-blades, to nearly the middle of her back. They were that of a chocolate brown, with what seemed like light caramel highlights that would shine vibrantly once the light touched them.

[x]-5-[x] Make sure your post is not inappropriate!
*Many users like to participate in adult/mature content RPs. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this. However, there are limitations on public sexual content. Although we may be able to publicly post a kiss, a hug, or even a bit of intimacy, no one wants to see your character get laid in the middle of the forest out in the open. Keep it at least PG-14, considering we DO have young members on here, and the fact that, that specific form of RP does go against RPG site rules. If you'd like to RP that way, please get to know each other, share instant messaging information, and RP your explicit content there.

[x]-6-[x] Try to refrain from god-modding!
*God-modding is basically, when a character is entangled in combat, and gives the opponent no room to fight back. This is not fair to anyone, no matter how skilled or unskilled you are in RP. A fair fight is all people want, when battling. When some people god-mod, it may discourage other users into thinking that they wouldn't want to participate in battles, because of the fear they'll get god-modded. Also, this is very ANNOYING. No one wants to walk into an area, and instantly be blasted with a shower of arrows, and killed right on the spot. How can that even happen? It's not logical, considering one person cannot control both characters.

[x]-7-[x] Make sure your posts are organized.
*When typing a post, make sure that it is relevant to the RP concept. No one wants to read a post that is jumbled with random thoughts. If you're RPing about werewolves and fairies, you would want to keep the subject handy, and mention what you can about the situation. Posting stuff like this will get readers confused:

He was walking through the forest, searching for that dirty werewolf, and all of a sudden he smelled something rather sweet. It was donuts. Why was the smell of donuts coming to his nose? Were there donuts nearby? Well, he was pretty hungry, so he figured he'd continue to travel in the direction from which the sweet, donut smell came from.

See, that makes no sense.

Hope that this all helps you guys out! I will be adding more as soon as I can.

I was reading all of this. It was helpful. Thanks.

Well, anyway, I'm not pretty good at grammar but I never misspelled words. Is that alright ?

Also, right now I had some problem in my mind. How if someone in your RP was trying to piss you off or something by not-mentioning your character although your character was there?
I'm in this RP and about 6 characters are at same place. Another character came; a chick; mentioned seeing the other five but didn't type your characters name on purpose since currently she had an online drama with you, although in your last post you already mentioned seeing her character came. What would you do if something like that happen ?
Seriously, I was pissed a bit.
I mean "Online drama" and "RP" are different. We should drop the drama out of the RP.

Depends who you talk to. If I RP with you then your fine the way you are. I'll RP at the groups skill level. Then again my self esteem isn't really tied to my literary skills and the stars mean nothing. Personally if I can understand the substance of your words then you could say "cat went house" and it's fine with me. Some people apparently can't understand anything less than perfect English. I'd either avoid those people or improve along the way before you do.

I'm not the official word on online drama boiling over into the RP, but I'd say perhaps you should drop out? Sometimes letting the other person get a small win will give you that opening you need to reconcile. Just so long as your ego can take that sort of blow. If you can't, I'd say appeal to the rest of the group and find a consensus with them. In the end you two are ruining their time with drama.

Freiya: If I were you, honestly, I would let it go. Honestly, if there is any sort of drama between you and someone in the chat and not through RP, sometimes it may be best to stay away from those people. If they already mentioned your character name earlier, then apparently they noticed your character. It could also be that person toying with you. A lot of times, when two people are at a split in the road, one will always try to get the best of the other. My honest advice would be just to either ignore that person and their character actions, or to just find another RP. It's not worth the time and effort to let the drama persist; it could cause more of a conflict between you and that person online, and through roleplay.

Lukisod: You are exactly right. A lot of people do not mind others' RP styles. In fact, they could prefer it. People will mostly want to RP with others at the same skill level/mindset as them. If they RP the same way they do, they usually will form a group of RPers who roleplay the same way. And that perfectly fine. But if you are wanting to amp your skills and gain MORE creativity, users should try some variety and RP with as many people as they can. Every person you RP can inspire you, no matter what.

My personal preference for RP is someone that can keep a storyline going. I honestly like para RP, and I usually RP with a certain group of people, but I mostly try to get out there and roleplay with as many people as I can, no matter their age, skill level, etc. It's fun to see what others have in store.

Well I agree with increasing ones skills to be honest. I took a venture to do rps I suck at, in a sense, to make everything I write good.It hasn't always been bad either, because some of the roleplays that I would never usually attempt have turned out to be much greater. (For example, there's a pokemon one im in and im not really a fan of the series but the writing I have done in this particular story is impressive.)

Only thing I disagree on is the "Don't overdo it." bit, if one wants to send the time writing in such a manner, I think they are entitled to, whether or not someone understands it exactly. Being poetic and detailed is fine, as long as it doesn't hinder the roleplay. Even if everyone "knows" what the subject is, should it be any less important to highlight the details, and describe the world around you? In turn, it may express the characters point of view of something as simple as the sun, maybe the character dislikes it or enjoys it, which would probally change the "mood" of the writing and view point, which I consider a useful tool. Just my thoughts on that and we are probably thinking the same thing haha.

Tigeress I'm afraid to say I must disagree with you, but let me explain. I am all for "overdoing it" in some aspects, for example instead of saying "the sun rose in the morning sky" I will do all I can to get someone to really feel the sunrise.

"The chill of darkness hid between the shadows of the fading stars, fleeing dawn's rosy fingers as they stretched across the blanket of mist. The light's delicate touch upon the earth drew back the haze, and the sun's bright face peaked over the edge of the world- rose higher. She smiled down upon earth's creatures still groggy with sleep, and her warmth stirred them from their dens, their burrows, their nests...until every creature was awake."

Being elaborate is good when it helps paint a portrait of the scene we are seeing, even better when it helps convey mood and brings the story forward. When it is not good is when it is so convoluted that no one understands what you're talking about. Like if I replaced the simple words such as sun and earth with complex descriptions such as "fiery ball" or "green mother" then no one would understand what I was trying to say. It would be useless then, convoluted prose that means nothing and does not contribute to the story.
"Art is the language of human emotion...with it, one can transcend the boundaries of mere words and speak with feeling and understand the subtleties of intention. Without art, there is no understanding...we are left cold and empty, riddled with doubt." - Patsy Books

Direct quote from myself, we aren't really disagreeing lol :) sorta splitting hairs though. I just find the example and explanation for it off, give or take my oponin, writing is very versatile. As i stated above, "over-doing-it" is fine as long as it doesn't hinder the roleplay. :) So we hit on the same subject lol. I was merely suggesting points that seemed to be missed in the orginal that Akita may have missed and ot was aimed to help others, not disagree or agree nor form any notion.

At least that was the intention, nya!

Oh, my bad lol. I guess I wasn't really paying proper attention when I replied to your post (proof that one shouldn't stalk the forums when it's nearly 2:00 in the morning :)). So consider my post as an excuse to advertise my wonderful prose :D Joking, joking lol. In any case, I'm glad we understand each other. :)

People can constantly improve their grammar and literary skills. People can, also, constantly improve their instructional skills. If they're like me, they can wonder why their concise, succinct posts seem annoyingly short.

Here are a few corollaries to Akita's tips, in no particular order:

  1. Write it correctly the first time. Don't take artistic liberties with your material until it's done right. It's significantly easier to proofread dry, flavorless prose than it is to correct the literary equivalent of a fruitcake.
  2. Write it concisely. Make every word count. Make it short and sweet. Make sure you know what you're saying; sometimes a simple word works better than a complex word.
  3. Write it with consideration. Does what you're saying mesh with what your character is experiencing? Does it work with the role-play's theme? Make sure it does. If you're writing from the third person subjective or third person objective point of view, only write what applies to your character and your scene. Be conservative with your description; unless of course, you want to make something apparent by lengthy description.
  4. Call what's above Kronny's three C's of writing.
  5. Don't follow rules to the letter. Take liberties, but don't take them too far.

If you can correct anything in this post, I'll bequeath you with thanks and kudos; my ego will kindly punch you in the solar plexus.
