Nanako was sitting on a parkbench not far from school. She had flashbacks of the day she died: She was picking berries and mushrooms. The warning bell was ringing from the village. She saw smoke coming from the village and ran to it. Bandits or samurai were attacking the village. They were burning the houses and slashing their way through the people. Her aunt was being raped. She had a knife on her. Nanako took the knife and rammed it into the throat of the rapist. The other attackers noticed and grabbed Nanako. She was taken to the edge of the forest and was to kneel down. "Please please." She yelled. A swordsman swang his sword. The last the she saw was her body laying next to her head in the dirt.
On the day she was resurrected, a descendant found a sheet which told of her death. The descendant offered his life for the resurrection of Nanako/Rin. He stabbed himself in the stomach and let the blood flow into Rins grave. A soon as the descendant died, she was alive. She noticed the time she was in and decided to blend in with her environment. After that she came to the school which was the nearest. In the nights she noticed, she had become a nukekubi and wanted to end her life but her body wasnt fragile anymore.

Nanako got up and headed towards school.

Koi was floating around some alley, a decrepit sliver of the world, diseased and strewn with litter. A hobo was sitting, shivering, hadn't noticed Koi.

Koi moved up behind his head, and he screamed. A screech, a torrent of noise as loud as cannons, or a trillion bats sounding from his mouth. The hobo clutched his head and cupped his hands over his ears before running, whilst swaying, trying to escape the alley. Koi was quick. Koi was about to pounce. He bit into the neck of the man and pulled him back, slamming him into the graffiti covered, once-red brick wall. The hobo's head cracked. And Koi ate.

His head floated quickly, flying gracefully through the air with ease. He found his body. A slim, pale man's body, minus a head. He wore a white short-sleeved shirt over a blue tee, baggy denims and black shoes. He corrected himself above the stump that was the neck and landed soflty against it. The line that parted them closed and red symbols replaced it, going around his neck. He walked over to a dressed and picked up a collar. One for humans, commonly for dogs. Typical. He put it on to hide his symbols and looked in the miror that towered over the mahogany dresser. He smirked.

Nanako saw that it was almost schooltime. The students at school believe that Nukekubi are a myth and dont ask about the red mark on her neck. At night she doesnt go too far from her body. So she feasts on students, teachers, employees or people who walk past the school at night. No one knows how the students and teachers disappear.
She went to class. "This afternoon we will be making a trip to the graves of the villagers who have died during a raid 600 years ago and to the famous graves of a girl who gave her life to save a family member." the teacher said. The first thought that went through Nanakos head was: "Oh crap. What would they think when my grave is empty and there is a half rotten male descendant next to it."

As soon the announcement that they were going to the graves of the villagers, Kelvae sensed tense in Nanako.
"Man, could there be a worse time?" Kelvae muttered to herself, and as the bell rang the students trailed out of the classroom, whispering or talking or laughing about what they would do at the grave. Or things along those lines.
Kelvae trailed behind, her long black hair flowing behind her like some black waterfall. Interesting.
Kelvae began to daydream. I mean, there wasn't much to her death. Just going to the emergency rooms, they doctors trying to do everything they could, but they kept muttering things like, 'I have no idea,' or 'We're trying everything we can..but we just can do this..'
And those sentences would fade away, my body clinging to white sheets while the doctors did unknown surgery's, gave me unknown prescriptions, advice that wasn't really working.
Until they sat down and gave up, but of course they would never say it.
They gave me the illusion that I still would live.
And..Aymery had. As a nukekubi.
"And it sucks," She spoke bitterly, and walked away.
Starlight, I will be chasing your starlight, until the end of my life; I dont know if it's worth it anymore.

Gene sat in the classroom listening to the field trip they were going on that day. It was an odd place for them to go. It hadn't seemed like the average field trip, but it go them out of the classroom nonetheless. Hm, Koi isn't here yet, I wonder where he is, Gene thought, searching the classroom for him. He shrugged and reached for his headphones, turning up the volume, tuning out most of the other class. He placed his hand on his cheek, keeping his head up off of his desk. He followed the class out of the room, loosening one headphone off of his ear. He heard Kelvae say something about being a worse time and he followed close behind her, curious of what she meant.

Kelvae turned into the big open expanse, the commons. It was filled to the brim with tables, cranky lunch ladies, and all of that sort. She could sense someone following her closely. She whipped herself around, her blue eyes bright.
"Oh." She said blankly when she found it was only Gene with his headphones in loosely. She realized it had sounded mean so she proceeded to conversation.
"Sooo..this field trip ought to be interesting right?" She spoke timidly. But now she felt like she had to say something. "Ugh..I mean, yeah. Think about it..all these graves. I have no idea why the teachers think we can handle this sort of things, especcially graves.." Kelvae laughed in monotone, glancing back at Gene to see if that possibly made any sense.

Gene listened to her speak about the field trip. He shrugged when she said it should be interesting. "It might be, bur I think it's a bit odd of a field trip choice, seems a little less educational than most people would suspect" he said, shoving his hands into his jacket pockets. He shook his headphones off of his ears, letting them fall around his neck. "You're Kelvae, right?" he asked, giving her a nervous smile. He wasn't to good with matching names and faces.

Kelvae smiled weakly.
"Tell me about it. Its the weirdest choice of a field trip I've ever encountered in the many years I've lived."
Kelvae surveyed the sentence that she had just said. Many years?? It was only an accident she had'nt said 500, and totally crumbled the secret of nukekubi's. What is wrong with me, she thought morbidly.
"Well yeah. I'm Kelvae. And your Gene obviously," She cracked a smile for absolutely no paticular reason. Then she caught site of the school newspapers.
"Fishsticks.." Kelvae muttered mindlessly. Gene looked at her quizzically at her sudden silent outburst of 'fishsticks.'
"Ohh. Um. I say fishsticks, like, as if people say Darn. Its my word for Darn. I have absolutely no idea why.." She said awkwardly, but her eyes were still on the school daily newspaper.
The headline read, 'More Students Dead.' Simple but eyecatching.
And of course Kelvae knew that this was all because of the nukekubi.
"Oh great.."
The thing about being a nukekubi was, at night, when all and everything was not under your control, you just wanted more and more and more. You would'nt have realized how horrible you were until you saw headlines alike these.
"This is horrible."

Gene grinned. "So, like you say fishsticks as I say damn, for example?" he asked. He looked at the newspaper headline and sighed. "Doesn't surprise me, at this point, it seems more routine than out of the ordinary" he said. He looked at her and patted her on the shoulder. "I doubt it'll last to much longer" he said naivelly. "besides, the school doesn't seem to have been shocked by it, so it's not too bad." Although, murder is murder, and soemthing should be done he thought.

Kelvae laughed.
"Yes, exactly." She paused, though, to glance at the title again. "Yeah. It keeps happening. Pattern. Every night..Ughh. Its just really miserable. Its like this is some death my dark highschool." Kelvae thought for a bit. "Ok, just saying, but death-by-dark is a cool band name." Kelvae chuckled mindlessly.
"Sorry. I'm weird." She smirked, and headed to get some chow, and joined the table where Nanako was; Kelvae motioned to Nanako, indicating she needed to tell her something.
Inside, Kelvae wanted to stop killing.
But yet, as all things in life
It wasnt that easy.

Nanako heard the others talking about the trip. "Its time to go." The teacher said. They walked out the class and out the school. It was a good ten minute walk. Then they got there. There were about 30 graves. At Rins/Nanakos grave there was a statue that just looked like her. The grave was empty. A couple feet away was the half-rotten body of the decendant. He could still be identified as a man. "Damn." Nanako thought.

Gene observed the statue while ignoring everything else. His music drowned out any voices or other sounds. It looks a lot like Nanako, he thought, staring at the statues face. "Hey, Nanako, doesn't this statue look a lot like you" he said, tapping her lightly on the shoulder. He hadn't even noticed the nearby corpse yet. He also hadn't noticed the empty grave, just the striking resemblence between Nanako and the statue. Creepy, the word passed through his mind like a bullet.

"Hmm. Might be an ancestor of mine. My family has lived in this area for ages. So it could be possible." Nanako said trying to find an excuse. "This girls name was Rin. She saved a family member by killing one of the raiders of her village. The legend says she was then beheaded by a raider. He descendants still seek revenge today." The teacher told the class.

Gene dismissed the strange feeling he had gained from the statue when Nanako spoke. He looked down and spotted the empty grave. He stepped forward to look into grave, but dirt had filled in mostly everything. That's odd, zombies don't exist in anything besides fiction, and the occult's a bunch of nonsense, he thought, So why is there an empty grave? He sighed and knew he was just confusing himself. He hoped the field trip would end soon. It was pretty boring at this point.

"You are free to wander about or go back to school." The teacher said. "But you should stay in groups since there is a murderer wandering about." "Gene let us go back together." Nanako said. "Did you know that the story of the cat and the samurai comes from this area? You know where the cat saves the samurai by waving at him."

Gene nodded and followed her. "No, I didn't know that" he said, "that's interesting." He turned off his headphones, which were still giving music off. "How do you know so much about this area?" he asked, glancing over at her. He didn't know much about the area, besides him being lazy, he didn't look into it that much. School didn't teach much about history, at least none he cared about. He never looked into it either. "How long has your family lived in the area anyways?" he asked.

"About 700 years. Some in our family moved to other places like Edo (old jap. name for Tokyo), Nagoya and Hiroshima. We are a pretty big family. I grew up in this area." Nanako answered. They reached school. "Its getting late. But I still have some time to chat."

Gene nodded. "Most of my family moved here from Tokyo about 200 years ago" he said. He didn't know much abotu them then, and not much about the past 200 years either. "I don't really pay attention to history, but at the moment, most of my relatives have moved to the more populated cities. In all honesty, I prefer this place over all others" he said. He looked up at the sky. it was becoming late. "Well, I'm at my mom's house this week, so I don't care how late I'll be out" Gene said, "so I'm free to talk for a while."

"I have time til 7." Nanako said. "What do you think about the murders? It is strange eh?"

Gene shrugged. "I haven't thought much of it" he said, "they haven't really said much besides students have died." He had thought it was odd they did that, unless the murders had been too gruesome to simply put into the school's newspaper. He sighed and sat down on a nearby bench, shuffling his arms out of his jacket sleeves and across his knees.
