Eden howled, which turned into a long high-pitch scream once she had been changed back into a human by Jessica’s spell. She writhed on the floor, feeling a dull shooting sensation pulse through her body. It was another few moments before she could open her eyes, look around, and assess the situation.
Jasper lay near the fireplace. He was curled up and looked to be in a rather large amount of pain. His usual pallid complexion was smeared with an expression of agony – his browns furrowed and his cheeks red. Embarrassment was also evident. He had never been defeated so badly in his life.
Jessica was looking down at Jasper, her foot on his throat. Her ‘just-try-and-challenge-me’ expression could now be fully understood, as both Exley siblings had a resonating feeling that they had hastened to judge the girl. It had become all too apparent that this confrontation was a battle of wills – the will of two distinct individuals; Jasper, with his forceful and direct method of resistance, opposing all who crossed his path; then there was Jessica, with crafty strength and mysterious powers up her sleeve.
But where did this leave Eden? She felt an instinctual desire to protect her brother, but would opposing Jessica really be the smartest thing to do? It was not likely that Jessica would allow herself to be bitten, but was she really strong enough to resist the Wolf Lord? His approach would not be like Jasper’s – he would have a more cunning tactic up his sleeve.
“Oh, I’m not worried,” Jasper managed to slip out despite the pressure on his throat. “Not about your powers, anyway. Antigonus will deal with you.” Jasper muttered something incomprehensible to Eden, his wand came flying over to him, and in a split second he had grabbed Jessica’s leg and yanked her into the fireplace with him.
Eden scrambled off the floor and dashed through the portal in the fireplace before it closed. The strong sinking feeling in her stomach already told her where they were going.
Sure enough, the high, arched ceilings of the Manor’s ballroom came into view on the other side of the portal. The large many-windowed room was dark as night, only the moonlight streaming in through the long vertical windows illuminated the faces of the people standing before Eden.
Jasper and Jessica stood just before Eden, right in front of the fireplace. They too were staring at the faces of the men in the center of the room.
“Exley,” Antigonus drawled, stepping into the moonlight. The contours of his face were clarified in the light, only small shadows now played over his strong features. “I see that you have failed me. Come here, boy.”
Jasper stepped closer to his master, putting on a brave face. The followers behind Antigonus chuckled at Jasper; Eden figured that most of them knew what was coming. They stood in a perfect ‘V’ shape formation behind their Lord, all of them wearing their characteristic black robes with red detailing.
“What happens when you fail, hmm?” Antigonus looked directly into Jasper’s eyes with no sign of leniency. He waited for a moment, but Jasper was silent.
“Answer me!” he roared, seizing Jasper by his throat.
Choking sounds emitted from the boy, his body becoming instantly limp as he was deprived of oxygen. Without making a conscious decision, Eden ran to him, frantically trying to pry her godfather’s hands from around Jasper’s throat.
“Desist!” Antigonus stated, pushing Eden backwards and out of the way, “He can free himself simply by answering me.”
“I – I – ” Jasper croaked, “I d-deserve to be p-punished.”
Antigonus laughed venomously, the other wolves joining in with him. “There’s a good cub.” He released his grip on Jasper’s throat, causing the boy to stumble backwards before regaining his balance.
“Crucio!”
Jasper cried out furiously as he was knocked off his feet, writhing and screaming on the ground. Antigonus kept on smiling, looking quite pleased with himself.
“Learned your lesson, boy?”
Jasper was lying on his side panting heavily. His eyes were closed and his face was screwed up. When he finally mustered up the courage to open his eyes, he tried to stand up but the after-shock of the pain caused him to teeter and sway before his balance returned.
“Yes, sir.”
“I don’t think you have, quite yet. You don’t understand Exley – when you disobey me, you will wish yourself dead! Oh, I have more pain in store for you yet. At least your father knew a thing or two about how to get things done! Though, he was just as weak as you are. Yates, keep an eye on him.” Antigonus seized Jasper by the neck of his robes and pushed him toward Yates, who grabbed both of the boy’s arms and held tight.
OOC: I wanted to write more, but I was afraid it would be way too long. I'll write his confrontation with Eden later. For now, you can write Jessica's interpretation of what's going on, or have her say something if you'd like.
