Take this as a guide to your actions here on Gateway; if you follow these guidelines, not only will you be exactly what we're looking for in our staff members, you'll be a great community member that everyone loves.

1) You don't need a staff badge to get things done.
If you're not staff, that means you're already part of the single most important part of RolePlayGateway: the community. Our entire staff is made up of people just like you. If you have an idea on how to improve the community, go ahead and start working on it!
We promote users to positions of responsibility because they have already contributed to the community in some significant way. This not only demonstrates that they have the ability to contribute, but also the motivation. We value motivation over any other single attribute when considering a staff position.
2) Put care into every post that you make.
Every single post on this forum and in our chat is visible to the entire world - and will be looked at when we consider promoting someone to a staff position. We're not picky about things like grammar and spelling - but keep in mind that we need to see that you've got a head on your shoulders that's able to communicate effectively when it becomes necessary.
That single post that you made making fun of someone's writing ability? Yep, that's a strike against you, too. We ask all of our members to be courteous and respectful to others - and becoming a staff member does not put you above this expectation. If you are rude or disrespectful in any public place, we will not be staff on RolePlayGateway.
3) Follow the RolePlayGateway Rules.
Absolutely no member of our community is above the rules, and this includes staff. If we find that as a member you are not following the rules that we've laid out, we can be assured that this will not change if you are promoted to staff. Following the rules will ensure that you're in good shape in everyone's eyes, which will make us more likely to promote you.
Help other users follow the rules by setting an example, not by pointing out their mistakes! No one likes to be called out on something they've done wrong, especially if it was an accident - when you go back and edit your post instead of posting a new message (see the forum etiquette rule), you are setting an example for your peers to follow, and you are becoming a leader in the eyes of the rest of us.

And remember, the most important part of RolePlayGateway is you, even if you're not staff. Our staff members are regular roleplayers just like you - we entrust our staff with responsibility because they have excelled as a member, not because of any other reason.
As a result, we will even remove staff who violate our expectations, and we will take no hesitation in doing so. We're all about moving forward and putting people in position who care about helping, and are willing to do so. If you have any problems with staff members to report, please contact me directly and I'll take care of the problem.
In short, our team leaders will pick new staff members from the community. Follow the above guidelines to maximize your chances of being noticed.
