How do you get your music? ( )

Postby Kouketsu on Mon Feb 18, 2008 4:13 pm

The day of actually, you know, leaving the house and going down to a record store to fetch an album are seemingly long gone in this day and age. But there are still the rare numbers out there at least paying for the music they get, whether it be from some online store or from merchandise tables at shows themselves. So the question begs to be asked - how/where do you get your music? I'm curious.

As for myself, I'm not going to lie, 45000 songs don't just magically appear from online shopping trips. Currently I'm addicted to audioblogs, cruising along a good 40-50 that I read and download from on a weekly basis, and about 100+ that I make it a point to visit at least once a month to get my fix. Used to do a lot of torrenting (And still do for hard-to-find and out-of-print stuff), also. And when I can and get the chance to, I'm always one for buying albums directly from the bands and artists at shows and concerts, trying my best to support. So how about everyone else?

Cha, well...I don't buy music often since I rarely have the money and I rarely need to. Good ol' Youtube and all that...But....When it comes to bands I really like (As I Lay Dying, In Flames, Amon Amarth, etc.) I always buy the albums, I want them to stick around and keep making awesome, epic, amazingly good music, giving them the money to do so is just the way to ensure that. So, I download music every once in a while, but I most just buy CDs or just listen to it on Youtube or the band's myspace, in that order.

Torrent collections are probably my #1 source at the moment. I've since phased out my audioblog visits, at first in favor of their RSS feeds (which automatically downloaded as soon as they posted), then later in favor of Google (for those single tracks that are stuck in my head).

Code: Select all
intitle:index.of +”last modified” +”parent directory” +(mp3|wma|ogg) +"artist name here" -htm -html -php -asp

Have you heard of that browser that is audioblog centered? I think it's called songbird.

Edit: Check it out.
As you recall, you know I love to show off,
But you never thought that I would take it this far.
What do you know?

Kou, just think. Your music collection would be worth almost $45,000 if you bought it from iTunes. I wonder how much of that the artist would see...

Lol, I've actually got an Excel spreadsheet that I started way back when to keep track of how much I would've spent on my collection if I had actually gone out and purchased the albums at retail prices. I'm not even close to through with it (Because it's based on full albums and EPs, of which I have approximately 5000), but it's currently at something like $20,000+ and growing by the day.

What's unfortunate though is that so much of it I barely get to listen to, and yet there's so much more out there that I feel I absolutely need to hear eventually. For a short amount of time I was involved in this cool little 'music group' thing that I came up with and included a few friends in. Basically what we'd do is each take a genre or set of genres and each week we'd traverse the internet, all the audioblogs, all the news sites, all the new scene releases for our respective genre, and we'd check out the bands and albums. Then we'd meet every weekend for like, five hours, and just talk about it, sharing new bands and albums, introducing one another to the gems and the decent picks, etc. It worked really effectively until school came along and stopped things.

Arrr...

Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me-- Er, sorry.

I'm definitely a downloader, but I'm not above buying music, I usually follow a simple rule. If I: A) Really, really like the band or B) It's a local band; I'll buy the CD, with the exception if I already bought it at one point and lost it or some such, in which case it would still fall under the ZOMG DOWNLOAD category. I used to pack it in with LimeWire, but as of late I've switched over to pulling whole albums using Torrent.

Don't 'ee mourn for me, my lads
When it comes my day to die.

I am the downloader type. Can't help it. They are fweeeee~

But then, I only buy when they are down there at the shops, most of the time, I don't think they release most of the international stuffs here in Sarawak, but they do at Kuala Lumpur. So I mostly download rather than buy. I would do a hunger strike when I am dying to get that album or something. It depends on me, myself and I.

I like to download a lot of music, Just so I could put it on my iPod and/or Listen to it at home when I am bored. If I am lazy and want to listen to a song that I don't have downloaded, I will just go to YouTube, iMeeM, or Myspace(rarely).

I spent hundreds of dollars on music, but went broke, and still wanted to hear new music, so I switched to the legal version of Limewire, the one you pay for..so that's somewhat better than just getting free music i guess. Musical artists are rich enough as it is, sure they're not AS rich as they were before people started doing illegal downloading..but they've still got it made, and don't do any REAL work for it.

I still go out and BUY THE CD!!!! When I'm unsure if I want to buy a cd from an artist I hit up youtube and listen to all the songs on the cd (if there up), then make my decision to buy it. Music has changed a lot in 10 years....

In order from most often to least often, I get my music from:
•Listening to radio (not really getting the music, but....)
•Copying music files from my computer games into my "My Music" folder
•Watching Youtube
•CD's given to me as gifts
•Finding a place to download it with Google (only if there is one specific song I want)
•A friend of mine who pirates music regularly sending me something he really wants me to hear

All mine from iTunes, maybe Virgin if I'm in Dublin. I've spend over €50 on EPs and albums on iTunes. And the odd music vid. I'm 14, thats a lot for me.

I'm screaming I love you so

But my thoughts you can't decode.
