Interlude: Fleet Testing ( )

Postby NTS on Mon Jul 07, 2008 9:02 pm

The Ephraim-class Limited-Production Special Cruiser settled into high orbit of the uninhabited world. The jaundiced cloudless planet was too close to the sun to be viable, the outer crusts harder than battle steel. Coming to a slow halt, the starboard broadside turrets slowly traveled to face the planet. Space and time seemed to slow as the cruiser's guns flashed, barrels blinking incessantly as the serried points of gun barrels rained death on a planet.

Slender shells streaked towards the target, comet-tails billowing out into a gradually dying contrail as the shells wiggled left and right in terminal evasive maneuvers, resembling ovals with wriggly tails attacking a sphere. The tiny streaks bombarded the larger sphere in a city-sized area, most impacting on hardened crust and detonating. The first barrage of shells stripped away a hardened layer of planetary crust, laying a soft planetary skin ripe for the taking.

The next bombardment produced no explosions. The planet's mountain ranges were occluded by a massive dust cloud, wreathing the planet in an opaque night. The explosions from the second bombardment penetrated the darkness of the clouds as eventually one or two wriggling spheres penetrated the sphere...burrowing deeply and exploding.

A small range of miles high mountains melted in a mixture of lava and glass. Satisfied, the cruiser departed before the remainder could congeal into a new form of geography.
