Liam grinned at Hayley but didn't speak; pushing the key into the ignition, the car sprang to life, and he reversed out of the parking space and drove through the school gates. He put the radio on as he turned onto the motorway, but still didn't speak. He sang along to a few random songs, but by the time he turned off the road and let the car bounce along an old dirt track, he had lapsed back into silence. After a while, he pulled off the dirt track, too, and they started to cut their own path through the woodland. The land wasn't completely un-marked; there were a few parts of the grass that had been worn down by tires before, but it was evident that the area was usually deserted. Eventually, he pulled up, cut the engine and looked around.
The area was, in a word, beautiful. A little clearing at the edge of the woodland, with a lake that the car was facing, surrounded by nature; trees, wildflowers, wildlife, birds, butterflies - the perfect, romantic spot. Liam wound the windows down and leaned back against his seat, resting his elbow on the open space. "So," he said, grinning at Hayley. "This better than maths?"
