Kai's Character Art and Requests ( )

Postby Kai on Wed Dec 02, 2009 6:13 am

!!!REQUESTS ARE CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE!!!

Are you looking for an accurate visual representation of one of your characters? In search of an artist to do the job for you? Read on!

Types of requests I accept:
~ 2D drawing of your character in a pose in their environment. Simple enough.
~ 2D character sheet (includes front, side, back views as well three action poses and four facial expressions)
~ 3D character model (For this one I can provide a full render of a posed character, a character sheet, and/or movie of the character turn-around, depending on preference)

**Note: Due to the amount of time it takes to model, texture, rig, and skin a full 3D character, I will be very picky with what characters I will accept for this. They will have to be very well thought out, unique, and interesting.

Things for you to know:
Please only submit serious requests. I don't want to be picky over this but if you give me a typical run-of-the-mill high school student who isn't very well thought out, and will only be in two short role plays before being tossed aside I will most likely skip over them. You can find any picture online for those types of characters.

When submitting, keep in mind that these will take me some time to complete so just be patient and I'll deliver everything as quickly as I can. Thanks.

I like to put time and effort into my work and don't want to overload myself so I can't take on too many requests at any given time. Every once in a while I will open up the floor to new requests so if you really want to submit your character just check back every now and again for openings.

When your request is finished and the final piece is handed over it will contain a small logo at the bottom. Do not, and I repeat, do not remove it. It's my own signature to the art. You are free to use the picture where you want but do not mess with the logo. Thanks.

When submitting a character, fill out the following:
Format: (One of the three types of requests listed above)
Style: (If you have any type of art style that you prefer, I can adapt my art accordingly)
Character Name:
Age:
Appearance description: (You can make this as detailed as you want)
Character's personality:
A brief history: (This is optional, really. I'd like to understand the character so some background information would help. Weird, I know, but it works.)
Any extra information:

And finally, a few examples of my past works so you know a bit of what to expect to get from me. Ironically enough my latest work is on a hard-drive that I don't have access to at the moment, so I'll have to make due with putting up some of my older pieces.

The following character is from the modern/realistic genre. An extended profile can be found at this page if the below one doesn't provide enough detail.

I need to return to edit this. The linked profile has all the description details. . . I need to write a personality.

:EDIT: :EDIT: :EDIT: Yup. It's been edited. Again, see the other link for extensive profile and far more information. It's something like 8 pages long printed.

Name: Tahira Ali
Age: ~61 (for when the novel concerning her takes place)
Appearance description: The description in the other profile is more of 'fact sheet' kind of description, because it follows the format of a police report. Let me see what I can add to that: Tahira Ali is a petite woman with a vacant gaze (her eyes usually seem blank and without emotion), and her grey hair is going white, and it hangs limply around her face. Um, I think I could think of more, but I don't feel like writing purple prose and I need to go again. . .
Character's personality: Tahira Ali is quiet, shy, and introspective. She is the kind of person who thinks badly of herself, but wants to be loved and accepted, and possibly forgiven, if such a thing is possible. She excels at mathematics but has a problem with words and language and expressing herself to say what she really means. She hates to hurt others.
A brief history: Born in 1950, Tahira Ali was raised by her aunt, an Evangelical Christian missionary, in an Islamic country, and was sent to a Catholic school. In August 1968, she fled her nation while a full-scale revolution against the European colonial government broke out, and began murdering people, until in December of 1968 she was the first woman added to the FBI's Ten Most Wanted List. No one has seen her since, or at least, no one has admitted to having seen her.
Any extra information: I don't know? What kind of things are you looking for?
Format: Whatever you think is best. They all sound good to me.
Style: Realistic, dark, serious. . . that kind of tone.

I have some work I've done with this character here and here if you scroll for pics with Tahira Ali's name in the title or description, but your work by far is superior to mine. Perhaps my work can give you an idea of what I'm going for. . . but not quite achieving.

Name: None really, in the orginal story she remained nameless though many of the characters called her different names.

Age: Relative really, but she was perhaps 7-8 years of age, perhaps older.

Appearance: A dirty body covered in long ragged stitches that skillfully reconnected the white features of this once beatiful stuffed cat. The feminine clothing that of a nurse, its white torn and ragged beyond much use, while the little paws, with pink leather at each part where flesh would be, was sullied from the ground for each step.Curiously more-so underneath her back legs, suggesting the figure walks on two legs.

Her sleeves are frighteningly stained with dried red, most likely the crimson water that fills most creatures, yet this marks the dolls purpose of being a caregiver.

She carries a small pair of scissors in a tiny silken belt of white, along with several small medical containers filled with sewing thread and various knives, tiny to adapt to the small creatures front paws that mixed brown and frightening red splatters.

Her eyes are a luminous green, the matieral used in them shining brilliantly in the slightest bit of light. Small and narrow, they are never the less the product of a skilled artist, displaying infinite kindness and a warm compassion in the fading darkness of her world.

Personality: Kind, yet lacking words. The character couldn't talk in her story, so all of her scenes had to be "Acted" out. The detail of my work with her had to put alot of emphasis on body movement. Most of the time, her own thoughts (a tool I used for describing some of her actions to the reader) was often sad and thoughtful. She is generally a very belovent character, helping wherever she could.

A good example is that, being a stuffed doll, she really had no use in the story during many scenes (yet she was the main character), particularly in the area of combat, in which she would be kicked aside. However, it never stopped her from being brave, even when faced with her greatest fear, which was fire.

History: In the darkness of a twisted childs mind, among the many ruined twisted memories that made up the alternate world that lied ever so close to our own, the stuffed cat was given what reality had denied her, the very essence of being..

As she moved and saw for the first time, her existence, among the small illuminated flowers that over-ran the infinite darkness of imagination, that she was no longer touched by the loving touch of the child, she tried to carry out her duty, a innate desire to heal despite the hatred of the childs heart that made up her reality.

As such, the cat-like nurse suffered in a world where morality was only insanity, and kindness was a chest locked keep in the childs heart.

Being unable to age or die, yet not devasting in body and having no such thing as a spirit, the cat-like nurse seems to simply exist in her world, not even filled with hope...

Yet somewhere inside her, a secret wish.. she longs to be with her child... to love her and give herthe most important thing to the sanity of the young.

Happiness.

Any Extra: I submitted her for the character creation contest, and though she didn't win, I recieved some private messages that hoped that one day they could see her in art. Unfortunately, im a horrible artist, (my stick people view me as a sick goddess of creation >.>) so I never had the chance, hence my request.

Format: Personally, I think the character would look best in a simple 2d format, with a background. I belive her detail would be lost in CG (no offense meant) as well as the semi-realistic feel I wish to give her.

Style: I have no particular one, but Im hoping for a very serious picture when it comes to the character. As a artist, I feel you need as much room as possible to do that, so i'll leave you be! :)

Thank you very much, I hope that you decide to work on her. If you wish to do any more requests, I would be honored to have some work done for other characters as well. Please PM me if she is suitable.

Name: Kale Darkfang
Age: 17
Race: Dark Elf
Appearance description:
Dusky black-blue skin, silver eyes, and long pointed ears. Shoulder length black hair with steaks of silver through it, that’s always a mess and muscular but thin build. Wears a black shirt with an intricate silver design on it, dark green baggy pants with lots of pockets, and a black jacket or hoody.
Character's personality:
He is more reclusive and shy than others. He loves to hang out in trees and read. When he feels comfortable with people, he is kind and fun to be around. He is sometimes easily angered.
A brief history:
He lives on his own and takes care of his little sister. He has no clue what happened to his parents, one day they walked into the forest and were never seen again. Two weeks before his parents disappeared, strange and dangerous creatures had been appearing.
Any extra information: He is skilled with bladed weapons

Style: None

 Wow, character art is more popular than I thought. You guys are going to make me feel really bad accepting just a few characters here... Alright, here we go.

@ Ylanne: I would love to work on your character! I've only just skimmed over the information but will rake through it in detail in a bit once things settle down. Just be sure to add the personality bit, it'll be very helpful to define the mood of the art piece. So far I'm thinking a 2d picture for her. And I must say, I do love your drawings. They're really good and they give me a good idea as to what direction to take this in.

@ Tigeress: No offense taken :) Actually, you'd be surprised at how dense and detailed 3D meshes can get these days. The model of Sofi's head was done in an older version of ZBrush before I even knew how to use the program to its full capacity. Not to mention that I can get far better renders of that model these days. I won't get into technical details, though, as I do agree that keeping it 2D for your character is probably the better option. I'm actually very intrigued by your character and will be sending you a PM shortly with a couple of questions. Hope you don't mind.

@ Nyghtfang: Unfortunately, you are my number 4 here (technically). I would like to take a look at MoonMan's character first before deciding on this but I'll tell you what... If I have the time to take your request, I will try and make it happen.

To anyone else who happens to stumble across this thread: The quota has been filled and overflowed a little so I am unable to take any more requests at this time. If you're really interested in placing a request, however, I suggest that you check back here after the holidays. If my next semester won't look too bad work wise I will open this back up for a few more requests so keep an eye out!

Just one last note to those who have submitted characters, I will not be able to start work on them until the end of the semester (Two weeks from tomorrow) but will try and get the pieces completed before anyone starts ripping their hair out from waiting. Keep an eye on the thread as I will be posting updates once I start working on them.

Thanks everyone!

I know nothing of 3d or art! *smiles cutely to get away with her ignorance* but from what your telling me you have gotten really good at CG (and I already thought the Sophie one was pretty good!) practice makes perfect I guess. Its like when I look at my old writing and cringe >.>

Postby Kai on Tue Dec 15, 2009 7:17 pm

I'm getting there, Tig :) Takes lots of time and effort but I'm getting there. I actually still really like the model of Sofi but we're all our own worst critics whether it be art or writing. There's always things to improve on. Like the bow in her hair.... Boy do I want to rip that thing off and remodel it now...

Just to touch base here, though... Ylanne, Tigeress, and Nyghtfang: A quick (albeit not the most exciting) update for you all. This week I am finishing up my current character request and will be starting in on yours very very soon so expect new sketches and fun stuff coming your way :D I know I've said it before but thank you for letting me work on these characters. I'm really looking forward to it and hope that I can do them all justice.

Thank you again Kai for all of your hard work and effort. I definitely appreciate everything you are doing! :)

I don't want to seem like a nag, but do you think there is a possibility to have palpable progress over the next two or three weeks or so? Right up into the New Year, that is. I'm much looking forward to seeing what you will have to share with us! I'm very excited. You are very talented, and I'm hoping that I will be so enamored with your final artwork that you will permit me to display it on my writer's website (with your name clearly credited as the artist, of course) and/or on other print or media for personal use (again, with your name clearly credited as the artist, because I too hate thieves).

Anyhow, I'll stop typing and leave you alone so you can work on our fantabulous art! :)

Blessings and peace,

Definitely, Ylanne :) I'll do my best to keep everyone here updated with the progress. I'm just going to need a few days to rest a bit after the finals is all. It's been a tough semester to say the least. But basically the first thing I'm going to do is a big brain dump (as one of our teachers so colorfully calls it) with lots of sketches for character designs and, in yours and Tig's cases, composition ideas for the final pictures. Those should be up fairly quickly and once I get your input I'll start in on the more final work.

I'm glad to hear that you're so excited about it! It's giving me inspiration :) I've already started doing some small concept sketches and gotta say... Yours is going to be a different kind of a challenge for me, Tig. I haven't drawn animals too much in the past. Luckily I got a pet cat and a bunch of stuffed toy cats at home to reference so that will definitely help out.

Oh... Ylanne: Would it be alright if I pulled a couple of pictures from your website to use as a starting point on your character? The drawings that are titled "Tahira Ali Takes The Stand" and "Tahira Ali Testifying on the Witness Stand: Cross Examination" would be particularly useful. I don't want to stray far from your original concept so I want to reference the front view and the side profile to get the basic proportions down.

Well, I'm off to sketch some more and maybe find a book or two on cats at the library. Yay research :D

Stay tuned!

To be honest, I wasn't particularly thrilled about the way that either of those drawings came out, but upon taking another look (I just opened my own site in another window), both views of Ali will probably provide good guidelines for you to work with - the only thing that really makes me cringe is in the latter of the two drawings you mention, in that I think I messed up the proportions with her nose and hairline. . . because I haven't ever been really schooled in art, and I'm not exactly the best at it.

I actually have about 50 drawings drawn between October and now that I need to scan in and upload to the site, and some of them could possibly be useful too. That might happen this Sunday, or perhaps tomorrow afternoon.

Thank you again! :)

That's fine, Ylanne. Like I said, I just wanted to use them as a starting point for the character because I don't want to stray far from the original concept. Having a couple of your drawings as reference would help in that respect.

Anyways, I have mentioned before that I was working on another character request for another member of this site. I finally finished it a few days ago and wanted to post up the finished piece here as well for anyone who might be interested in checking it out. It was a more anime/cartoon request, playing around with the past (evil) and present (good) sides of one character through a mirror image. I'm actually really happy with the way this one came out :)

And now I'm off to do more sketching :)

Ylanne, I just want to get your opinion on this. I've been brainstorming some ideas for the overall composition of your picture and narrowed it down to the three versions bellow. They're just rough sketches to get the composition and lighting down. Which version looks best to you? Or do you want to go in a bit of a different direction with it? I'll be starting on the actual model soon but let me know what your thoughts are on this.

Kai, I love you. You are my new best friend.

I like the first one the best, the top left one. I also like the bottom center one, but I definitely like the top left one the best. The top right one I find rather dizzying, if you know what I mean.

I. Love. You.

Let me repeat: I love you.

This is like Christmas two days early for me! ....Oh wait. It is two days til Christmas. Oh yay! I am a very thrilled writer and roleplayer at this moment. You are making me beyond thrilled. A very happy child. :)

Thank you, thank you, thank you again! A thousand times, thank you!

@ Ylanne: Aww, yay, I love you too :D And I know what you mean about the second sketch being a bit dizzying. I was messing around with the idea of doing a forced perspective shot and that can be a bit discombobulating for the mind. So we'll go with the first one, then. Truthfully that was my favorite one as well :) I will have updates for you probably at some point between Christmas and New Years.

@ Tig:  Well considering it's a guy... *tilts head sideways* Didn't think he looked that girly. (Or where you talking about Ylanne's concept sketches?)

And I'm hoping to have sketches done both for you, Tig, and for Nyght by the end of tomorrow... Err... Well, today technically (curse my inability to sleep until ungodly hours of morning). I just gotta take a small break to do some internship application stuff but will hopefully have a start on things for everyone by the end of the day.
