Kaiya/Akita's 3D Designs. ( )

Postby Akita on Sat Mar 12, 2011 11:29 pm

Here's some of my other designs in 3D.

This is a lantern I created in 3Ds Max.

Here is a fireplace scene with bad texture mapping on the fireplace, lol. But it still looks pretty good. ;D

I absolutely looooooooove the fireplace. It is really great (Don't know why i would expect anything less from you) The fireplace looks beautiful. It looks like it would go perfectly in a certain rendition, of a certain bar, for a certain thread, for a certain amazingly lovable designer.... but that is just my opinion. Seeing what you can do with it i may have to end up purchasing this program...

Anyways great work, <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3

Hahaha! Maybe I'll fix it up and add it into the scene. :)

I love the lantern and the design on it. It's really nicely done. The only thing I would note here is that it could stand to be a bit smoother in some areas. I'm not sure if you had a poly limit to it but in the closer shots you can see the jagged edges of the geometry. From far away, however, it looks fantastic :)

The other thing of note is that you should look into using the chamfer tool on the top edges to smooth it out just a little. It helps those corners catch light a lot better and gives you a much better rendering as a result. Right now the fireplace has extremely sharp edges which makes the brick map sit on it kind of weird. Getting in there and adding a bit of detail to the geometry itself would bring it to that next level.

Good job with these, keep going :)

Yeah, I know what you mean. We use the chamfer tool quite a lot, and the problem with the lantern's geometry is that when I made it, I used the bevel tool to pull it out and when I went back to chamfer it, it wouldn't let me smooth it out as much as I liked, so I vetoed that idea. ;/ However, I am going to fix them up for my portfolio for school and stuff, so those ideas will definitely be considered.

The fireplace, I have gotten almost the same comments from my teacher, as well as other students in my classes. I have to bump-map the fireplace to make the texture map more realistic looking, and chamfering the edges actually would add to the detail of the design. So when I go back to do the bar scene, yeah I'll work on the design of the fireplace. That's actually one of my favorite pieces that I've done so far in 3D, so I'm definitely going to take those ideas and incorporate them into my design. Anything that can enhance my work is always accepted, so I'll put all of those comments into consideration and see what I can pull off. Besides, I need to get back to practicing anyways if I'm going into character creating next term. :)

Is that lantern one piece of geometry, Kaiya? One thing that tends to be helpful is that even if you're modeling one object you can break it up into separate pieces of geometry. That way you can control the level of detail easier on each separate part. The main bulb part of it looks just fine. It's the golden caps that need some more polys to smooth them out a bit more.

Glad to hear that you are working on developing the fireplace design. Can't wait to see how it will look in the bar scene :)

There's two different models. There's one that I have (the pink one before I added the gold ontop of the texture map in the first picture) and then the gold one. The pink one is one piece, but the gold ones, I split into two. However, the spheres I used were hollow, so there's nothing inside to pull if I needed to fix it from there. In all reality, I'd rather re-make it with a full sphere instead of a hollow sphere.

The gold caps are supposed to be kind of edgy, like it would kind of be on a real lantern or like a can or something. It's supposed to kind of have that old-fashioned handle look, which is why the shape is somewhat distorted. The main thing that I would change is the shape of the ridges on the sphere to just smooth them out a little which is just simple revising of the final piece, and nothing done with the texture maps or anything.

Everything can be separated. The sphere, the handle, the caps, the inside cup, and the bottom pieces are all separate from the sphere, as well as the two weaves at the bottom and the glass ball.

The bolded part is actually a key tool in understanding how the definite integral in calculus is used for figuring out such things as the area under a curve, fluid pressure on a non-horizontal surface, even volumes, as is the case here. One might even go as far as to say that the circle is the shape a regular n-gon approaches as n increases without bound.

There's some rendering errors in a couple of the images (mainly a white triangle in one of the top-down shots), but I'm guessing it was because you couldn't get a better angle without making it worse. It's a software limitation instead of user error, though, so I'm willing to write that off.

Also, the wood plank over the fireplace seems a bit less opaque than it probably should be.

No, there's no rendering errors. It's just the lighting position above the lantern to give it a glossy and illuminated look. And also it's a glass material and it's not a smooth geometrical shape. It's a geosphere, which is jagged.

And...This isn't calculus lol. You don't actually use equations to make shapes or anything of the like, you just...make it...Heh. It was made jagged-edged to kind of give it an old-fashioned type of look and edgy kind of look...

And the wood plank above the fireplace isn't supposed to be transparent. It's a solid piece of wood, opacity is always 100%, unless you're going for a different kind of look. However, in this case, the wood gloss makes up for the "opacity" of the piece. Also, the "opaque" quality you're probably seeing is the reflection of the top part of the stone....

I think the ridges that you're talking about is the issue that I was seeing, Kaiya lol so yes. It's not a hard thing to fix so it wouldn't take a whole lot, at least from what it looks like to me. I'm not sure what your geometry looks like on the whole.

As for the wood plank that qb mentioned, I just took a look and it is a reflection. It could probably stand to be dialed down just a little, easy fix :)

Curiously... do you use scanline or mental ray with these?
