Name: Dexter Griggins

Age: 65

Gender: Male

Race: Human

Appearance: Dexter is a grizzeled old codger who by rights should have been dead decades ago. He bears the many wounds and scars of his close scrapes in life. His right hand is missing half it's index finger, he walks with a pronounced limp, and his left arm bears a vicious scar from wrist to elbow. Dexter is deeply tanned, with a thick white beard, long white hair, and tobacco stained smile. His gray eyes hold a constant twinkle as if he is laughing or thinking of something mischievious. His attire consists of a war cap, much resembling that of the Civil War, obtained from some long forgotten campaign. He wears the standard naval issue uniform as the rest of the crew, but he gave up a long time ago any attempt to keep up his espre decor. His coat is unbuttoned and spotted by various greases, and meals. His shirt is stained, his pants torn, and his boots scuffed. Dexter doesn't disrespect the navy he just sees no logical need for cleanliness when there is constant work to be done.

Rank: Chief Petty Officer

Ship: NRS Courageous

Job: Gunnery Officer

Bio: An officer, a gambler, a drunk, and a rambler. All of these could be added to Dexter's repetoir of life, and much more. Dexter started life off with a lot of promise, as a low ranking officer in the Navy. He had aced his way through the academy and showed enough promise to one day be a Captain. However alcohol, women, and money got in his way. Dexter made enemies, money, and a one way trip out of his position as an officer. From there he rambled around the galaxy, recruiting himself into various positions. From a junk salesman, to a bartender, to his current job as a Rail Gun Master aboard the NRS Courageous. It is Dexter's job to keep the rail guns in tip top shape, and firing correctly in the midst of battle. He does so happily often ragging on the crew about their young age, crumbling and creaking about the ship always griping and complaining. He loves his job and the crew, but he would never admit that to their face.

Okay, so are we actually starting up with a battle, like Phidius has it, or ignore that and move on?

I personally vote for ignoring that, since we still have people who haven't even had a chance to make their first post, and we're not really in a roaring hurry anyway.
Her fingertips, outstretched, sketched a farewell,
Her eyes, downcast, asked when I would return.
And I replied, "What traveler went forth
Who knew the fate God had in store for him?"

Character profile

Name: Jack Reid

Age: 28

Gender: Male

Race: Human

Appearance: About 6"2 with neck long hair, normally just wears a pair of black pants gravity boots and a vest or a white T-shirt, an empty holster hangs on to his pants and a few mag holders underneath. Also wears a black baseball cap or just takes it off and wipes his face, wears a bandage over his left hand because his left hand has a brittle bone type disease so his bones break easily.

Rank: Petty Officer

Ship: NRS Corageous, a battle cruiser.

Job: Engineer/Systems Tech

Bio: Born away from Earth unlike his parents, they were also in the military. When he was six he was diagnosed with a brittle bone disease and was able to get treatment before it spread. It only managed to reach his left hand so he wears a bandage to decrease the chance of his hand breaking every time he unscrews a bolt and drops something on his hand. Luckily when he moved to the Corageous two years ago they were able to get medication for him so every month just in case the normal meds he takes stop working and surrender the war and let the disease infect his body.
He respects and admires the captain of the Corageous for what he's done over the years.

(Ok Irish, I know you had a bad encounter with me in that other roleplay, but i changed a lot over the few months I've been here and this roleplay looks brilliant, just a little compliment your like a roleplay master and all mine suck.)

Given that Phidius wasn't part of the RP at that point, I say we ignore it. Especially since we not only just started, but also just got out of the wormhole.

Ice Heart, I'm taking you up on that offer.

Yes St. Michel, we are not starting the battle right away. The first alien contacts (with them popping out of nowhere to add shock and confusion) will come when the squadron is in the middle of their sweep of the solar system

Alright Jackarhius, I'll give you a chance, you've made a good looking profile. Change his rank to Petty Officer Third Class, no jeans and we'll be good.

Phidius, I'm gonna say no. First off, the ships of the 7th fleet are old and outdated, so having brand new weapons systems doesn't work. Add to that, the Heavy Cruiser you've made is packing more weapons then a Battleship! Second, none of the sailors in the fleet are topnotch and so filled with potential that the Top Brass would want to watch them. This is a fleet for oddballs, mavericks, retirees and those annoying officers no one wants around headquarters.

Cheers wolf, glad to be working with you again. Except this time I'm not an ass and I don't jump the gun anymore, I tend to get carried away when describing a gruesome death and stuff, but this is probably like star wars where the laser gun thing leaves no mark apart from a hole and stuff, damn...I really have to stop playing Gears of war, fallout and dead space.....

Hey Jack, one question: if your character has a bone defect in his right hand that prevents it from working properly, how'd he ever get accepted into the Navy? I don't know if that'd get past the Navy doctor in charge of the initial physical examination.

Well the fact is, with his born medical condition has only spread to his hand and nowhere else he feels absoloutley fine unless he puts pressure on it. If the condition had spread to all of his body, he'd just sit in a chair. He'd have to be careful when he needed to get up and take a piss. But this being the year that it is, they have astounding technology to prevent it from going anywhere he said they're not alout to amputate his hand or he would beat the shit out of them. And he was accepted into the navy, because they needed to keep their ships together, Jack has expertese in engineering and systems tech. So they brought him to the Corageous because they probably need him to keep the rotting piece of shit together. Also he makes sure systems and core engines are at least on 56% or they could be fucked.

Happy? I could write all sorts of stuff like this all day long.
Told you I'd changed.....

Name: David Shaw

Age: 23

Gender: Male

Race: Colonist, Human

Appearance: David stands the modest and average height of 5'10". His hair dark is kept short but not buzzed. He combs it forward. David spends most of his free time in the gym giving him a strong build. His day to day uniform is a flight suit. He keeps them crisp and clean.

Bio: Shaw grew up knowing there was only one place for him. That place was in the cockpit of a fighter. At 18 David graduated from high school and got accepted to the Naval Academy on Mars. He spent years at the academy learning the basics of naval leadership. With his college degree in hand Shaw's schooling still wasn't complete. For a full year David went through flight school. David graduated and headed off to the Widowmaker Squadron aboard the NRS Courageous. Upon his arrival he found out that his technical training surpassed the level of the Courageous. The Courageous only housed F212s while David had been trained upon the state of the art F231 Vicktor Industries Viper. David has been thrust into the XO position since most of the other pilots in Widowmaker Squadron didn't have Naval Academy degrees. He's having to learn how the real navy works and how to fly an older star fighter all at the same time.

Phidius, I like that you cut down on the railguns but your heavy cruiser is still heavily armed. First off, none of hte large capitalships are armed with missiles, as fighters and bombers are not that much a threat to them and they have smaller escort ships (like frigates or corvettes) to deal with them.

Second, it still as far too many small craft. Battleships normally carry over three squadrons but theses ships run on skeleton crews, so they wouldn't have enough pilots for three. If a Heavy Cruiser had any fighters in the 7th Fleet, it would have many one squadron.

prophetic_fury, your profile looks good, save for fighter carrying bombs.

I put that in as a thought to today's carrier based fighters. Its not a bomb to be used against starships but to be dropped onto land based troops. During normal space warfare you wouldn't even equip it going with AMRAAMs and AIMs and maybe a ECS pod. It would be mission specific. And with the Courageous' mission and supply it wouldn't carry many in it's magazines.

Re: Last Stand of Humanity OOC ( )

Okay, I'm still going to argue this Jack. There is no way someone with such a serious physical defect would be placed in serious frontline command. The current U.S. Navy lists its medical standards as:

(1) Free of contagious diseases that would likely endanger the health of other personnel.
(2) Free of medical conditions or physical defects that would require excessive time lost from duty for necessary treatment or hospitalization or would likely result in separation from the Army for medical unfitness.
(3) Medically capable of satisfactorily completing required training.
(4) Medically adaptable to the military environment without the necessity of geographical area limitations.
(5) Medically capable of performing duties without aggravation of existing physical defects or medical conditions.

I'd like to draw your attention specifically to points 2, 3, and 5, since a hand that might break simply from"getting up" seems to pretty much be a disqualifying physical defect. The U.S. Navy medical standards go on to list 35 categories of diqualifying medical conditions, of which one of these ("Upper Extremities") includes an entire section on "Hands & Fingers". Disqualifying features (besides missing fingers, etc.) include: "Scars and deformities of the fingers or hand (905.2) that are symptomatic or that impair normal function to such a degree as to interfere with the satisfactory performance of military duty." ; as well as "Intrinsic paralysis or weakness, including nerve palsy (354) sufficient to produce physical findings in the hand such as muscle atrophy or weakness."

There is little or no chance a person with such a defective hand would be accepted into the military, since it would prevent him from even completing training (i.e. "doing push-ups"). The best he could possibly hope for would be a desk job planetside. Honestly, this is the truth.

Well I agree and disagree, since when the hell if your an engineer and systems op for the NAVY do you have to push ups.
And it's in the story for a reason, it'll come into play once the battle starts.
sorry for the inconvienience but it's just my choice, I'm sorry that you don't like it but I'm not going to change it because I've posted twice in the main story.
Again I'm sorry, but it's just science fiction isn't it?

They'd have to have done push ups in basic training, which every recruit and cadet does.

But you're right, I can't make you change. I just think it's an unbelievable character trait, and I look forward to seeing how it comes into play in the story.

Well it is pretty unbelievable but it makes him human, not like bad ass tough guy awesome sailor fighter pilot/super marine with giant machine gun that kicks ass and chews bubble gum.

besides...think of it as it comes into play later on in the story...this is a clue, SNAP, CRACKLE and POP!
