An Irish Wolf and Iceheart production
Nine hundred years in the future, mankind has spread to the stars. First using slower then light speed travel and then later on, using the StarDrive. It was discovered that every solar system has two jump points, which led into pathways called wormholes to other solar systems. Each jump point has at least one wormhole attached to it, although most have several.
At first, the United Earth government was able to control the fledgling colonies but as with almost all colonies, they grew much to large and powerful to be chained by the mother country. Small revolts were able to over throw the small planetary garrisons of UE troops and forge new nations. So mankind became a splintered patchwork of large and small nations once again.
As is man’s nature, wars popped up between the new nations and vast fleets of space going warships gave battle across the stars. Each nation, fearing its fellow, built up navies and armed with the best weapons that science could give them.
Mankind also found themselves not to be alone in the universe. Several extraterrestrial lifefroms have been found that are sentient beings but at a much more primitive societies. (the most advanced could be compared with earth during the nineteen-forties). Most have been transplanted into human society as equal citizens. There have always been rumors of a much more advanced aliens on the edge of human space.
Alright, now that I have your attention, this role play will focus on a squadron of warships in the backwater of the small Nyisia republic. All of them are older ships, which would have been retired save for a need to patrol some colonies for pirates. Life is easy and lazy for these sailors, until the day that the rumors of more advanced aliens come true.

The development and use of weapons/armor
When humanity first armed their space going vessels, it was little more then crudely welded on missile systems by a smuggler that wanted to leave that life behind him and rebirth an ancient line of work, piracy. As time went on, merchantmen place installed missile countermeasure on their ship, to counter these new threat. Soon the various governments began drawing up plans to construct new ship made only for war. Like the primitive pirate vessels, the first warships were armed with missiles but not for long.
With a lot more money at their deposal, the various navies (thanks to spies) looked into arming their ships with railguns. The new weapon was a hit (quite literally). Because it was a breeze of throwing a guided missile off course, the first pirates that encountered the brand new weapon, had never developed the skill to evade. It became clear that thicker hull plating was going to be needed.
And so the battle between arms maker and armor went on, each nation trying to out build their competitor’s ships in armor thickness and gun size. That was until someone got the bright idea of using mining lasers to created a new ship based weapon system. The first laser batteries were simply enlarge mining lasers with short combat effective ranges (and even modern lasers have a far shorter range then missiles or railguns) but they cut though even the thickest armor like butter.
The next development in the arm’s race was the energy shield. At this time most ships were being build with only laser batteries and theses new shield absorbed the beams like a sponge. Bigger and more powerful lasers were needed to overwhelm the shields until a shocking discovery was made. A brand new Cruiser, armed with powerful laser batteries came into conflict with an older Heavy Cruiser armed with railguns. The kinetic force of the rounds broke the energy shield with only a few hits.
So a balance has been reached, lasers to defeat ship armor, energy shields to defeat lasers, railguns, missiles and torpedoes (large and unguided missiles) to defeat shields and armor to defeat those.
Rules

3. there will be few to no none-humans
4. this are not frontline ships, so they are being run on skeleton crew
5. no ships bigger then a Heavy Cruiser please.

Name: Fletcher Webb
Age: 30
Gender: male
Race: human
Appearance: a relatively average man, barely breaking six feet in height with brown hair slightly longer then navel regulations allow and unassuming blue eyes. A lack of fat on his build shows that he works out but not enough to allow a build up of muscle. His shin as become slightly pale from a lack of sunlight but keeps a healthy color from the leave trips taken at port.
Normally dresses in a khaki button-up shirt and trousers, with white undershirt, black shoes and a khaki peaked cap.
Rank: captain
Ship: NRS Courageous, a battlecruiser
Job: commanding officer
Bio: Fletcher attended the Nyisia navel collage on the capital planet of Obo II and was ambitious enough to gain the rank of captain by the age of 25. With his captaincy, he was assigned to the aged NRS Courageous, a Mjölner class battlecruiser in the 7th Fleet, assigned to patrol the rear of Nyisian territory, among the colonies. With that assignment, his ambition died.
The Courageous
Type: battlecruiser
Class: Mjölner
Size: 785 meters long
Appearance: The Mjölner class was named so for its appearance. Should one look down upon the vessels, they would appear somewhat like a hammer. The bow of the ships is a rectangle attached in the middle to a shift leading back to the engines. Rising from the engines is the superstructure containing the bridge, scanners and commutation transmitters/receivers.
Armament: six torpedo tubes (two aft and four bow) four bow mounted Hell-lance lasers, seven railgun turrets (six five-gun batteries launching 5,500 kilo projectiles up top and one belly mounted four-gun battery launching 3,00 kilo projectiles), six anti-fighter small laser batteries and two squadrons of fighters.
