Last Stand of Humanity OOC ( )

Postby Irish Wolf on Wed Jan 07, 2009 3:32 pm

An Irish Wolf and Iceheart production

Nine hundred years in the future, mankind has spread to the stars. First using slower then light speed travel and then later on, using the StarDrive. It was discovered that every solar system has two jump points, which led into pathways called wormholes to other solar systems. Each jump point has at least one wormhole attached to it, although most have several.

At first, the United Earth government was able to control the fledgling colonies but as with almost all colonies, they grew much to large and powerful to be chained by the mother country. Small revolts were able to over throw the small planetary garrisons of UE troops and forge new nations. So mankind became a splintered patchwork of large and small nations once again.

As is man’s nature, wars popped up between the new nations and vast fleets of space going warships gave battle across the stars. Each nation, fearing its fellow, built up navies and armed with the best weapons that science could give them.

Mankind also found themselves not to be alone in the universe. Several extraterrestrial lifefroms have been found that are sentient beings but at a much more primitive societies. (the most advanced could be compared with earth during the nineteen-forties). Most have been transplanted into human society as equal citizens. There have always been rumors of a much more advanced aliens on the edge of human space.

Alright, now that I have your attention, this role play will focus on a squadron of warships in the backwater of the small Nyisia republic. All of them are older ships, which would have been retired save for a need to patrol some colonies for pirates. Life is easy and lazy for these sailors, until the day that the rumors of more advanced aliens come true.

The development and use of weapons/armor

When humanity first armed their space going vessels, it was little more then crudely welded on missile systems by a smuggler that wanted to leave that life behind him and rebirth an ancient line of work, piracy. As time went on, merchantmen place installed missile countermeasure on their ship, to counter these new threat. Soon the various governments began drawing up plans to construct new ship made only for war. Like the primitive pirate vessels, the first warships were armed with missiles but not for long.

With a lot more money at their deposal, the various navies (thanks to spies) looked into arming their ships with railguns. The new weapon was a hit (quite literally). Because it was a breeze of throwing a guided missile off course, the first pirates that encountered the brand new weapon, had never developed the skill to evade. It became clear that thicker hull plating was going to be needed.

And so the battle between arms maker and armor went on, each nation trying to out build their competitor’s ships in armor thickness and gun size. That was until someone got the bright idea of using mining lasers to created a new ship based weapon system. The first laser batteries were simply enlarge mining lasers with short combat effective ranges (and even modern lasers have a far shorter range then missiles or railguns) but they cut though even the thickest armor like butter.

The next development in the arm’s race was the energy shield. At this time most ships were being build with only laser batteries and theses new shield absorbed the beams like a sponge. Bigger and more powerful lasers were needed to overwhelm the shields until a shocking discovery was made. A brand new Cruiser, armed with powerful laser batteries came into conflict with an older Heavy Cruiser armed with railguns. The kinetic force of the rounds broke the energy shield with only a few hits.

So a balance has been reached, lasers to defeat ship armor, energy shields to defeat lasers, railguns, missiles and torpedoes (large and unguided missiles) to defeat shields and armor to defeat those.

Rules
1. no godmoding
2. if you want to play as a none-human, place make a description of the new race
3. there will be few to no none-humans
4. this are not frontline ships, so they are being run on skeleton crew
5. no ships bigger then a Heavy Cruiser please.
6. have fun

Name: "Flak" Murray

Age: 28

Gender: Male

Race: Human

Appearance: Flak is 5"9, a bit under average height, but stockily built, with a thick neck and a barrel chest. He has a square, cocky face, bordering on smug, crewcut brown hair, and an old-fashioned gold tooth where one of his was knocked out in a hard landing.

Rank: Lieutenant Commander (LCDR)

Ship: Widowmaker 1

Job: Fighter squadron commander

Bio: Flak was born on one of the colonies, where his daredevil ways and quick reflexes got him noticed by the Nysia Naval College, and at the age of 17, he was packed off there. His academic scores, especially in math and strategy, were sub-par, insuring that he would never become a capital ship commander, but his quick reflexes, uncanny good luck, and good flying skills got him a billet with Widowmaker Squadron, one of two 12-ship squadrons of F-212s based aboard NRS Courageous. He has proven himself a gifted, if brash and headstrong, pilot, and the years following graduation have seen him rise steadily, but not rapidly through the ranks, and he now commands the squadron.

Ship model: F212
The F212 is an aging, but still very useful escort/space superiority fighter that is now approaching its fortieth year of service with the Navy. Shaped like a wedge, it is powered by two fission engines, capable of propelling it to 1100 kilometers per hour, and boasts an armament of two XJ1 lasers, mounted under the nose, and a pair of FirstStrike missiles mounted on to each wing. It is guided by a joy stick, along with two pedals that can be used to slew it left or right.

Uh, I'm going to say no to the stealth tech. Think of the role of fighters/bombers in this as being very comparable to those in the great naval battles of WWII. Big ships line up and start pounding on each other, aircraft try to get in close to the enemy ships and pound them while keeping other aircraft from pounding their ships. But against the truly large vessels, your heavy cruisers on up, a fighter is going to be an annoyance, and a torpedo bomber is going to be a minor nuisance. So to sum up, one, true stealth technology is something that is extraordinarily complex and perhaps impossible to achieve, and two, it's just not going to be that useful. With the amount of fire that's going to be outgoing from your own ships, I don't think you really want them to be unable to see you. Can you say frat-ri-cide?

Ooh! This looks interesting! -sparkle- :D :D :D

And I can play two characters and would like one of them to be nonhuman, please? -shall wait for confirmation-

Name: Alexis Ferandis

Age: 24

Gender: Female

Race: Human

Appearance: Alexis has short dark hair and dark eyes, standing at around 5'5" and dressing in drab clothing. Her skin is pale, the unnatural paleness of someone who is about to faint, and she generally chews her lower lip or her fingernails, especially when under pressure.

Rank: Wing(wo)man

Ship: Fighter or Bomber *

Job: Mostly running errands. On the rare chances where she's found in battle, she acts as a sweeper, focusing on high speed and offensive power, but lacking in defenses.

Bio: Alexis was the daughter of the owner or a rich corporation, but do to her passive personality and easily bruise ego, she didn't manage to get as far as she should have, even with millions backing her up. Throughout school, she was bullied and teased by other children- in the odd, backstabbing manner children have as the get older- and never stood out, having mediocre grades and no talents worth mentioning, or at least not any anyone knew about. She has a talent for acting, but not the stamina or composure, so she's ended up cleaning up pirating instead of acting as the apple in society's eyes as she may have liked- she's not telling.

*
I know nothing of the offensive power/speed of the ships and what not, so uhm, help would be nice? Thanks. :D

Fighters are fast attack craft that are used in an anti-bomber/anti-fighter roll, using weapons like small lasers and missiles to destroy bomber before they can attack a capital ship.

Bombers on the other hand pack torpedoes and are a little slower then a fighter. They try not to engage in dogfights.

As for the second, none-human character, PM me the character sheet and some information about the none-human race.

Postby Saint Michel on Thu Jan 08, 2009 12:30 am

Name: Julian Karpov

Age: 25

Gender: male

Race: human

Appearance: Tall and skinny, Julian is delicately built, with the slim fingers of a pianist. His dirty blonde hair is cropped short, and his clever blue eyes seem almost too large for his thin and freckly face.

He is commonly found in a light blue shirt over a white undershirt, navy blue trousers, and a khaki crush cap.

Rank: Lieutenant (LT)

Ship: NRS Gordan P. Thomas, a corvette

Job: Executive Officer

Bio: Born into a naval family, Karpov attended the Naval Academy and graduated 223rd in a class of 305. With the help of his uncle, Julian was assigned to a desk job at the Acapulco Supply & Procurement Station on Yaroslav. In the following years he learned to take advantage of his position to enrich himself, and did very well skimming from Navy equipment and payroll stocks. So well, in fact, that he began to cut into the illicit profits of the station commander, who arranged to have Julian reassigned to shipboard duty on the Gordan P. Thomas. Although his connections and talent for graft ensured that he lives comfortably, Julian has so far been unsuccessful in obtaining a transfer planetside and so seems stuck, for the moment, in space.

NRS Gordan P. Thomas
type: corvette
class: MacDowell
length: 302 meters
appearance: With a tubular fuselage, angularly sloping bow, and bridge placed forward topside, the Thomas is typical of the MacDowell class. Specifically, she is a "bearded and crowned" MacDowell, since she possesses armaments pods on fins placed both topside and keelside.
armament: eight missile tubes (four topside, four keelside), two torpedo tubes forward.
Her fingertips, outstretched, sketched a farewell,
Her eyes, downcast, asked when I would return.
And I replied, "What traveler went forth
Who knew the fate God had in store for him?"

That is acceptable to me, Iced Fire. (except since these ships can only carry like 2 squadrons of fighters, perhaps you'd rather be a squadron leader? Food for thought. . .)

Name: Mikri Nannen

Age: 8

Gender: Female

Race: Ririmu

Appearance: Mikri stands small, at about 3'5", wearing what appears to be something sewn out of insect wings. She has black scelras and white pupils, although the irises of her eyes remain fairly "normal" being a pale grey green. Her hair is raggedy and the same color as her eyes, and her skin is covered in soft down.

Rank: Mikri is rankless, only notable because she's got free rooming with Alexis and meddles with the lives of basically anyone who knows Alexis.

Ship: Mikri is shipless but for a small survivor pod filled with shiny wrappers and girlish fairy-tale toys.

Job: Works as a delivery agent. In her survivor pod. Needless to say she makes very little money.

Bio: As a Ririmu, Mikri set off on an obligatory quest to "find herself" at the age of five (which for a short-lived Ririmu is a very mature age). Since then she has found herself in problem after problem until she took up with meek-mannered Alexis, who no one would ever suspect. For anything. Of course, her hypothesis hasn't been entirely correct, however it's been sound enough for her to live in relative peace- minus what havock she causes herself.

Ririmus:

The average lifespan of a Ririmu is approximately 23 years, as they are small bodied and live in tropical climates. Primitive and similar to magpies, they live in the canopies of their island worlds and spend their lives collecting light-catching objects and things of comfort.

During the ages of 5-10, Ririmu's take a intergalactical journey to discover themselves. This used to be merely a archipalego-wide journey, but it's expanded, as has the time range.

There's Mikri. :D :D
