Adam leapt backwards in shock as Izzy dropped the mugs on the floor and they smashed. Shards of them exploded outwards across the room and he stared at her, startled. All he had done was come to see where she was; he hadn't expected her reaction to be so extreme. Stooping, he started to pick up the shards of broken cup with extreme care: he wasn't wearing shoes and he didn't want to step on them and get one embedded in his foot or something.
"I'm sorry if I scared you," he said, still sounding surprised. "I didn't mean to; I was just coming to see what you were doing, because I woke up. Are you sure you're okay with me being here, Izzy?"
When he had gathered up as many of the shards as he could, he walked over the cool tiles of the floor to brush them into the bin, and turned to smile at her uncertainly. "I can go if you want me to, you know."
