A little more Central Park:

And a picture from the American Natural History Museum in New York from the 1950s:

The Murmuration

Squeeee I can't help it, here's some dancing videos!

Here's a real rockabilly fest with some of the unbelievable moves those kids pulled off...I love how they know to give each other plenty of space :D

And here's one from a 1940's themed benefit ball, modern day but with an awesome medley all the same :D This is more likely what our kids are doing (any one of those...excluding the line of dancing girls, lawl) seeing as we're still in 1950.

And finally, this authentic 'how to' video! Very lulzy...maybe if OUR poor Dotty had followed these rules, she wouldn't be having such a miserable time!

Ladies and gentlemen (but mostly the ladies), may I present Prime Bruyere:

Image (original found here)
And may I submit to the court: rawr.

Meanwhile, here are some pictures of an in/famous speakeasy club in New York, the 21 Club!

Image
These days it's a restaurant. A restaurant I would love to visit just so I could pretend it's The Gin Blossom :D Also because it would just be freakin' awesome.

In its heyday:
Image

And if we just stuck a bit of Pat Morita in there...
Image

And some swingin' music...
Image

Good times. Good times. Unfortunately headed towards this:
Image
Which will be very fun to write, I'm sure :D

And one more thing I found that could apply to a wide range of our characters, and made me giggle...
Image

Also, I'm now really digging this idea of drawing the new generation! Anyone have any ideas for me? Should I do portraits the way I did the old ones? Anyone got any favorite scenes? I'm open to suggestion!

Hmm... It's up to you but I think scenes would be best. Tommy and Prime dangling from the edge of a building with 'Zo peeping out over the edge would be good!

A few photos from the Battle of the Bulge in WW2 (which Tommy fought in):

And some of the real US Army 7th Armoured Division which he was mentioned to have been a part of. Looks pretty grim!

A spot of 1950s inspiration crossed with a young Ben/Jo?

Since Tommy joked he was taking 'Zo to Le Mans... Here a picture of the 1951 race!

Alright, this is just a start...I wanted to do some more 'profile' type pics for the new generation, styled similar to the original ones. These are the sketches I have so far, but now I'm not sure if I'm going to finish them in that style or not...

I also have some other fun little sketchies, but they're not ready to share yet ;)

TaDAAAA can you guess who everyone is?

Awww, those are great, Jade! And I can definitely see who everyone is... I wanna see your other sketches!

Yaaay I'm glad you like 'em :D

And your wish is my command!

Image

This started out as nothing in particular, and quickly became a page dedicated to Jacqui...lol. There's her with the two nice boys she's torturing (hee!) and that one scene where she was readjusting her makeup, putting on a new mask. It was just a really powerful scene...very well written, and told us a lot about her :)

I'd like to do a few more character-devoted pages...I just can't decide who to do next ^^ Any ideas/requests/demands?

EDIT: Oh, and possibly no one cares, but I listened to a lot of Maroon 5 when doodling these :) Some of their songs just...really, really make me think of the various couplings/scenes involved here. 'Stutter,' 'Misery,' 'Hands All Over,' and so on. I leave that to the court. (shrug)

So, driving around yesterday, I heard a song called Sexy and I Know It, which cracked me up and inspired this:

Image

In case you can't tell, that's Clem trying to get Rosie to ogle Prime with her.

When it comes down to it, Prime winds up playing 'distraction' about 800% more often than 'Zo does. This is partially because he doesn't like people ogling his sister and partially because he inherited his mother's well deserved vanity and will gladly strut his stuff when given the opportunity.

All that stuff in red is Prime's tattoos. I played with the idea of him having tattoos at all for a long while (would someone who adores himself as much as Prime does want to risk leaving permanent damage on his flesh? Much less have strong identifiers?) then decided that it WAS something Prime would go for. Then I had to decide WHAT they would be. Eventually I decided on Voodoo Veves (symbols of Voodoo deities) but still have some idea of him having a cool tree all over his back, with secrety symbols representing his family.

Blah blah blah shirtless Prime.

Pictures from Operation Avalanche in 1943, which both Mal and Teddy were a part of (Mal as an NCO in the 34th Infantry Regiment, having already served in North Africa). It was the mainland invasion of Italy, and it took place in September. The Italian Campaign itself lasted until right before D-Day in 1944.

It has been a long time since we've had a media dump!

So, I've just started watching the show 'Supernatural' at the insistence of a friend. I've never watched it before because, even though I loved the idea, the guy that plays 'Sam' also played a character I hated in a different series and every time I saw his face in a commercial I'd go "Bleeeeeh."

I've only watched the first episode, but I'm rather thrilled by the show. And, to my endless amusement, the character 'Dean' is so much like Prime I'd think I ripped him off if I didn't know better. Way too confident for his own good. Extremely good looking and extremely aware of it. Adoration for car. Unusual skills and zero real-life ambitions.

Image
And leather jacket. Ding ding! We have a winner!

Furthering the lulz, in looking up a proper picture of the character I found more and more evidence that Prime has a paranormal counterpart.

Image
Has (had) a car he adores.

Image
Very hands-on, rough-and-tumble approach to life.

Image
Wild mood swings. Unusual sense of humor.

Image
With Rosie's present.

Image
It's just so fun finding little bits like this. Since I prefer rather off-the-wall characters, it's not often I see other media that reminds me of them. You guys ever had a deja-vu moment like that?

New York in the 50s:

The Beat Generation in late 50s pulp fiction (the second one makes me lulz):

And finally, a spot of my very own London in the 40s, when Ben and Jo et al. might have stopped off after things kicked off on the Continent.

Although, clearly pre-Blitz...

Alright, forever ago I said I was working on new character sheets. Well, that's taking...erm...forever. I might just do single, full-body, full-color pics and call it good. Here's one, now!

Got another one!

Image

Fun fact: I'm using the Polyvore pictures that Northern put together for the kiddos' outfits :)

Not sure who will be next. Probably Jacqui or 'Zo. Eventually, I'd like to mesh all their pictures into one group shot and make a new banner. Ideas for a new tag line?

Those are great, Jade! I wanna see the rest! I wish I had some kind of artistic talent...

As for a tag-line... I'll get thinking. Nothing springs to mind immediately. Just googled a few beat gen quotes and I just found one that might as well be Jacqui's motto: 'In the U.S., you have to be a deviant or die or boredom' (William Burroughs).

Thanks! They wouldn't look so awesome without those sweet Polyvore pics you pulled together :D

I love that quote. Have you ever listened to Imelda May? Her stuff always makes me think of Jacqui. Rockabilly on an acid trip is what it is. Good stuff, though.

Here's some more!

Image
Alex, our resident demi-beatnik, semi-horndog sweetheart.

Image
Clementine, Mistress of the Universe.

Image
Jacqui: the one Beat to rule them all.

Image
Rosie, our blossoming rebel.

Image
Teddy, who is adorably on a highway to hell.

Image
And 'Zo, the most innocent girl to ever come from a baby-vamp machine :)

It's hard to see, but where I appropriate I used clips from old art to get colors right. Rosie has her Daddy's eyes and hair, Clem and Alex are opposites on who got Mum or Dad's eyes, skin, and hair, and so on.

Hope you like 'em! I've got one going for Ami, but it's just not done yet and I'm sleepy. I'd be willing to do more, but...well, then they'd be naked...because they don't have cool Polyvore sheets...y'know...

Not sure what the lineup should be for the big picture, either. Tommy, Prime and 'Zo should probably be within spitting distance, of course. Same with Teddy and Jacqui. Other than that, though, I'm just not sure.

Good night!

Squeee! They're beautiful! Now what to do with them...maybe interaction shots, or favorite little scenes...hmmm...

And if you did one for Vivi, I could get an official character card done for her and she could be in the group pic for this installment :D

In the meantime, here's Ami!
Image

Poor, sweet Little Missy. With her classical music, fine dancing and ability to act conservative in public, she probably fits into her family about as well as a duck with a bunch of cats. Fortunately, they seem to love her anyway :)

Still figuring out what order to line the kids up in. I've considered height (which ends up being divided along gender lines), moral questionability (which leaves people next to each other who've never actually met), and alphabetical (which just looks stupid). I remember having this problem with the first one, of course, so I should be able to figure it out just fine...but the lines were more clear-cut back in the day. Now the story's all braided up and loop-de-looping, which is fantastic, but dang. Would it be wrong to ask for more simplistic storytelling for the sake of a siggy? Lawl.
