The OOC

Things weren't okay. No matter how hard Logan attempted to convince himself that with his mother and her husband gone, that things would get better, he just couldn't believe it. Sure, they were gone, but deep down he did love his mother or at least the person she used to be. Now, not only would he have to deal with emotions that he had kept buried since his father's death, but he would also have to assist his younger sister with her's, and socialize with her siblings who had deserted years before. Were they only coming back to get their share of the small inheritance their parents had left? Or was it to make sure that Logan would continue to raise Emma? He knew he needed to set the two of them straight - that now that their parents were gone, he wasn't going to be the one having to keep things together for their minor sister, Emma, any longer. One of them could play mommy and daddy now because it was time for him to take a turn at living his life.

A sigh escaped his pale lips as he dumped some more hay into the horse stalls and refilled the water tubs. The chicken feed was replenished, the cows were milked and the pigs fed. It was only eight-thirty in the morning, and Logan had already accomplished nearly two hours worth or farm work. He was used to it, seeing as they only had a few employees besides him and Emma who would help with the crops and animals.

Exiting the barn, Logan noticed how hot it had gotten. The sun was already beating down on his dirty skin, and he could tell that it was going to be one of those usual sweltering July days. He wouldn't be doing much work today though, so it wouldn't be horrible. However, his mother's burial was in just a few hours and the heat would only make him more irritable. His siblings would be showing up any minute now, but Logan wasn't going to go out of his way to do anything special for them. If anyone should be kissing ass, it should be them to him. They didn't experience the abuse from John, or the pain from watching Emma and his mother being abused. They didn't need to turn to violence, anger and drugs themselves in order to cope. But he did.

He pulled open the creaky back door, exhaling slightly as the air-conditioned interior of the home was definitely soothing. Emma was probably somewhere around, but he didn't bother to see if she needed help with breakfast or anything. He doubted that the girl would be able to stomach any food after finding their mother's body only days ago. She was definitely more emotional than he was. In fact, not a single tear had fallen from Logan's eyes. It wasn't because he didn't miss his mother really, but he didn't feel bad that she died. It was her own fault. She brought it upon herself and pulled down her children in her downward spiral.

Shrugging off his clothes, Logan escaped into the steamy shower, hoping to wash away some of the stress with the dirt.

All Alexander could do was try to keep himself calm and under control. It had been a few days since he had gotten a phone call from his brother Logan, explaining that their mother had died. Apparently Emma had been the one to find their mother's lifeless body. He had the feeling that she wasn't handling things well and he didn't blame her. He wouldn't know how to handle seeing something like that. The phone call was the reason that he was heading back to his hometown and he hated that fact. He hadn't been there since he had left for college all those years ago, the year that his father died. That phone call had torn him apart but he hadn't returned home despite his mother's begging and his siblings. They all had wanted him to come home and be the man of the house.

There was no way in hell that Alexander wanted to give up his future. So, he promptly began ignoring the endless phone calls and focused solely on college. He had graduated and was actually beginning to work. Not only that, but he was in a solid relationship with Loreta Hamilton. She had been with him when he had gotten the phone call from his brother and he had asked her to come with him. He doubted he would be able to face everyone alone. He also knew that he might not be entirely welcome considering what he had done to his siblings. He had left them to fend for themselves when their mother had brought home a good for nothing, abusive alcoholic. Yet that, still, was not enough to make him want to come home.

He glanced towards Loreta who was right beside him and he bit down on his lip. There was so much that he felt he should say yet he couldn't bring himself to. Instead he reached for her hand before focusing on driving. They had been on the road for what felt like an eternity but it wasn't long until he was pulling up in front of the place that he had grown up. His stomach was in a series of knots and he was trying his hardest to keep calm. He turned the car off, pocketed his keys and looked over at Reta," I'm going to apologize in advance..my family doesn't exactly like me very much considering what I didn't do for them." He hoped that she would understand. He climbed from the car to walk to the back to get their bags from it. There was no telling how long they were going to need to stay.

All Alexander could think was that he really didn't want it to be for that long. He had only come to bury his mother and that was it. However he was the oldest and he had no idea what was going to happen to the land, the barn and the house now. He slammed the trunk shut, squeezing his eyes shut and taking a few deep breaths. Why did everything have to be so damn hard?
