If Life were a Film Noir... ( )

Hello, guys and dolls.

Have you ever wondered the title question? What if life were a film noir? Dramatic lighting, mysterious happenings, murders in every corner...

A Life Less Noir is a study in this world. In 1950's New York, New York, there is a madman loose. Known as the New York Strangler, he sets on young women during the night, outside of clubs, soda shops, down any dark ally. Strangling the life from them and leaving no clues as to his own identity.

But there's more to New York than the murderous headlines. There are underground establishments; illegal gambling, brothels, and the leftovers from World War II.

Don't be intimidated by the fact that this has been going for a little while; we're looking for fresh blood! People who love film noir, or even just love telling a great story. If you think you have the chops for it, please apply with a character profile (1950's appropriate: no ninjas, robots, or yetis) on the Life Less Noir OOC Page.

Any questions can be asked/will be answered here.

Thank you for your consideration!

Just a little blip to let people know we're still very interested in new recruits! We'd love some fresh ideas, and we have some exciting things coming up. Underground gambling, arson, car chases...if you want in, come on over!

To you younger people in the audience looking at this topic: Yes, this roleplay has been one of the more persistent ones on the site, dating back to the days of Gundam Wing Chat, or so I've gathered: even I haven't been around that long! That's no reason for you to not want in on this, however! The focus on realism will probably mean that you'll have to do some research, but that's as easy as asking your grandparents about what they remember about that time period. (Something tells me you'd rather do that than crack open a history book, especially during summer vacation.)

Aside from family, try taking in various media such as movies, TV shows and music produced during the time period to get a slice of life from that day and age. Then as now, movies inspired companies to roll out their latest models for the silver screen. If you've ever been to the annual Woodward Dream Cruise held in the metro Detroit area, the rush of Americana you got from seeing all those boats on wheels and muscle cars is as good a barometer of the general "vibe" of the era as any, barring all that Cold War stuff.

As you can see, there's a bit of a learning curve to it all, but in my experience the best RPs usually have one. If nothing else, it keeps out the flotsam and jetsam. ;)
How long will he keep on fighting? How long will his pain last? Maybe only the X-Buster on his hand knows for sure...

Thanks for the vote of confidence, QB :)

A few points, though:

Life Noir hasn't been around since the days of GWing (I haven't even been here that long!..I don't think) but it does have real staying power :) I feel that is a very good thing.

As to the learning curve, it really sort of depends on where the writer is coming from. Day-to-day life during the 50's was not so different from day-to-day life in certain parts of the world now. Rock 'n Roll was just getting started, cookie cutter houses were in full swing, television was novel...but what's important is the characters. How they react to the events in the game. The time period is just the fun, pretty cover that we get to play with!

The most important thing is that this game is a lot of fun, and even more fun when we have more active participants.

So...any questions?
