Snow. Kaed had grown up around the freezing-white, but it still fascinated him. It fell from the sky like the rain, but it was colder, and lighter, and more fun to throw at people. Smiling at the thought, Kaed picked up a handful and left it there, contemplating the white-cold. He threw it back down, just as a gust of wind blew across him. The low hill he was perched on, nestled among others in the plains, provided a view for many miles. But he concentrated once more on a little valley between him and another low hill, where he could already see some of his brothers. They all had the same objective, now all they needed to do was wait for their prey. Kaed sat down, sticking his spear in the soft snow and making sure to keep his bow out of it. Another gust of wind made the man pull his hood closer, further isolating himself in his own little bubble. But then, he heard someone say, "There!" His eyes perked up instantly, searching the valley for the long white tusks that preceded the mammoths. And there they were, a whole herd. But they only needed one, and so her looked for the very last in the group. Good, it was a male. And it was big. He looked across to the other hill, where he could see the leader of that party looking at the last one as well. Kaed waited a bit long, so their target would be squarely between them. He stood up, grabbed his spear, and began to run down the hill, yelling a battle cry. The others did too, and the two parties met on the center ground, the mammoth trapped between them. He threw his spear, plunging it at the base of the animal's neck. The others did too, and soon the animal was looking more like a porcupine than a mammoth. Soft snow crunched underneath them as the hunters struggled and eventually brought down the massive animal. It fell with a loud thump. Kaed looked to find the other mammoths had just left it to die, and they were already far away. Freezing sweat dripped from Kaed's brow as he walked over to the mammoth, looking around at the hunters, his brothers. He raised his spear in triumph, yelling loudly again. The others did the same, celebrating their victory. "Now..." Kaed said. "To work! We must be back by sundown." They began to carve into the massive beast, like they always did their largest prey. While cutting off various portions and placing them in extra bags he had brought, Kaed looked around for Traag. He hadn't seen him since the two parties split.
