That happens to me a lot so I generally type it into word or notebook and save it there before putting it on here just in case. It also helps pick up spelling and grammar mistakes as an added bonus.

Actually you'd only have to inhibit the transcription or translation of said genes, separating them would just screw up your chromosomes majorly (Hooray for chromosomal genetic diseases!)... Stimulating or inhibiting hormones to do this, amongst other things to stop the abilities, is the easiest way...

Maybe (for some of them, not anyone with metal bones or something) it causes a sort of mental/neurological block where you cannot will yourself to use them fully? e.g. if you had a tail or wings it would become inert.
