Northern Lights

Tips: 0.00 INK Postby IndieM on Sun Jan 22, 2012 10:38 pm

Northern Lights
(CLOSED)

Shadows all around you as you surface from the dark
Emerging from the gentle grip of night's unfolding arms
Darkness, darkness everywhere, do you feel all alone?
The subtle grace of gravity, the heavy weight of stone

You don't see what you possess, a beauty calm and clear
It floods the sky and blurs the darkness like a chandelier
All the light that you possess is skewed by lakes and seas
The shattered surface, so imperfect, is all that you believe

I will bring a mirror, so silver, so exact
So precise and so pristine, a perfect pane of glass
I will set the mirror up to face the blackened sky
You will see your beauty every moment that you rise

Name: Ryan Bernard
Nickname: He hasn't had a relationship long enough to have one
Age: He is twenty eight, born September 2nd 1983
Gender: Male
Appearance:
Appart from a few scars across his face a body, when in his human form, there is hardly a trace of bear in Ryans appearance. His hair is medium to short and almost always goes undone. It's a sandy blonde color and relatively short. His dark blue eyes are small but with light lashes and a sturdy brown. He has full lips and a handsome smile. Ryans firm set, strong, jaw usually has traces of stubble, though he doesn't mind.
Ryan is on the shorter side, standing around five foot eight and of average weight. He is more broad chested, with wider shoulders and a narrow waist. He tends to stand a little hunched over with his arms slightly forwards, usually in his pockets.
Image
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_s6m7BrVPEqE/T ... ar-spl.jpg
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/c ... NWR_10.jpg
As a bear, Ryan's body is almost abnormally big for a polar bear. He weighs almost 1,800 pounds and 10 feet in length, double his human height. Like his human body though, his muzzle and body are scarred from old battles against other bears over food. His nose, eyes and claws are black, a stark contrast from his alabaster fur.
Personality: Ryan really is a nice person. He's sensitive and aware of others feelings, putting them before himself. He likes to laugh and make others laugh as well. It's just that turning to a polar bear durning the spring and summer months, then back to human durning fall and winter, makes his life very difficult and very frustrating. There is always time in between transitions where Ryan needs to re collect his thoughts and be re taught basic human (or bear) instincts. It's durning this period where Ryan begins remember things of his past. Most memories come back, some do not.
His bear personality is closely related to his human one, sensitive and aware of others. He's protective yet gentle.
History: Ryan does not have much of a history. He doesn't remember family or friends, either because he forgot them, or never had them. He cant remember why he changes with the seasons, he doesn't even know if he's a bear changing to a human, or a human changing to a bear. All he knows is that when the northern lights come in the spring and in fall, he changes.
During the few months in his human form, Ryan has taken up a passion for commercial fishing. He travels to the Bering Sea every year and sets out with a ship to fish for Alaskan king crab. It always takes him a while to remember the ropes of fishing, but it always seems to come back. He gets paid a hefty amount, some sitting in his bank for travel, but he never really keeps onto it, he only needs it for half of the year. Something about risking his life on a crab boat gets to Ryan, perhaps because he feels like he only lives half his life so he tries to make up the other half.
Ryan's life is just going though the notions. Change to a bear, hunt, stay alive, change to a human, live and fish. And then it starts all over again. He is a traveler, but never strays to far from home.

Name: Melanie Tibbits
Nickname: Melanie grew up on nicknames. The most common one is Mel, but she also goes by Melon, Melly, Melonade, just about anything would fit her name.
Age: She was born January 12th 1987, making her twenty four years old
Gender: Female
Appearance:
Image
Melanie has medium length hair that reaches to just past her collar bones. Her natural soft, curly, hair color is a reddish brown but she usually dies it to a brighter and darker red. It's different, but thats just the way she is. Her skin is fairly pale with a scatter of light freckles across her button nose and pink cheeks. She has dark brown eyes and thick eyebrows. Her lashes are dark and curly. Her coral pink lips are on the thin side and rather small for a mouth, but she has high cheek bones to compensate for it. She is of medium to tall build, standing five foot seven.
Personality: Melanie can sometimes be hard headed and stubborn. She will be quick to defend and stand up for herself but is more reluctant to come to others aid. She likes to stay out of other business and like other to stay out of hers. Her biggest pet peeve is respect and so she will show respect to those who deserve it. Appart from being outspoken, Melanie likes to have fun and smile. She's kind and generally put peoples best interest at heart.
History: Melanie had a very privileged life. Her family wasn't super rich but they got by. She was privileged more in her relationships than in income. Her best friends were her older sisters and she looked up to her parents. She had the hardest time when her older sisters moved out and so as soon as she graduated high school, Melanie was out and about. Her main focus is photography and videography and her muse is wildlife. She has a brief background on the basis of veternariy practices but she mainly studies (and photographs/films) animal behavior. She has traveled a lot for someone as young as her, from the thick jungles of Madagascar to the cold of Russia, mostly documenting wildlife and spending some times with the natives there.
Melanie had been up to Alaska one other time and so she knows a little of what to expect. This expidition will be the completion of her training and after she finishes schooling, she'll be on her own.

Name: Jenna Wilkins
Nickname: Jen, Jens, Jenni, Jen-Jen, Jama Jen
Age: 23
Gender: female
Appearance: Average height, about five foot six, with a slim athletic build. She has fair skin that gets a warm glow in summer, and peachy pink lips. Her eyes are a soft green, the color changing slightly depending on the light and her mood. Her soft oval face is framed by gentle blond curls, which hang down to the middle of her back.

Personality: Curious, but mostly quiet and closed to people when it comes to herself and personal stuff. She automatically keeps people at a distance until she becomes comfortable around them, which doesn't happen often. Jenna is determined and hardworking, throwing all her energy into whatever project she is working on, whether it be personal or for work. She always does a job to it's fullest, making sure she has done everything she possibly can before declaring it finished. Knowledge is her passion, her weakness is trusting. It takes a long time to gain, but only a moment to break it.

History: She had a hard family life growing up, which is very much a part of her life even though she tries to keep it in the past. Her father was an alcoholic and beat her mother frequently, who was too weak to stop him or get out of the relationship. When she was old enough, she recieved the same treatment, as well as her younger brother Jeremy. To deal with the rough life at home, she dedicated her time and energy to schoolwork. She worked hard and studied everything she could get her hands on, which eventually lead to a full-ride scholarship at a prestigious univeristy. She left home and didn't turn back, focusing on her future and leaving behind her past. She lives alone with Jeremy, whom she has helped to get into college, where he can make a life for himself as she has. She never talks to her parents, having cut them out of her life completely.
She just barely got her masters in marine biology, and as part of her schooling she was hired by an oil company to work with a team of scientists to scope out new drilling sites offshore in Alaska and what effect they would have on the habitat. She's been working with them for a while now, and this is her third trip to Alaska with them. She met Roy on her first trip and after a while, they started to go out. Over time she realized she didn't love him the way he deserved and broke it off, which makes working with him difficult sometimes. They act like friends and try not to let it come between their work.

Name: Roy Jeffreys
Age: 26
Gender: male
Appearance: Average looking guy, about six feet tall, neither skinny nor muscular. He has brown hair which he keeps short and chocolatey brown eyes, fair skin with the faintest spattering of freckles across his nose and cheeks. He has an easy warm smile and usually he has some scruff on his face as he sometime gets too distracted to shave.
Personality: Intelligent and carefee. He's pretty open and kind, but can be a little self-centered sometimes
History: He's a chemistry/physics major, which has also tied into geology. HIs speciality on these missions is more data based and using calculations to see the effects of the environment. He's still a little bitter about his break-up with Jenna, but he has tried to move on.

"Put your books away, you stupid cow!" Jenna fumbled with her school books, piling them with her notebooks as she moved off the dining room table quickly to get out of her fathers way. She barely dodged a fist as she ran to her room, seeing Jeremy duck into his at the sound of the raised voice. "That's right, Jens! Cry! You'll never graduate, you're so stupid! I don't know why you even try!"

Thump. Jenna shook the memory from her mind as she looked down to where she had dropped her bag. Hoping that no one had noticed her space out, she picked her heavy duffle and carried it to her bunk and set it down. Since the research facility was fairly small and most the rooms were dedicated to their research, there were only two sleeping quarters, one for men and one for women. There were a few new faces on this trip and Jenna looked around a little warily, wondering what the new people were like. She knew she should just relax and be friendly, but she couldn't. Instead of interacting with the others she set to work laying out her things and settling in.

Melanie followed the other reaserchers into the base. There were six members total on her team, Doc, the team leader, his wife, another girl around Melanie's age and and two men. She made her way to the girls sleeping quarters and set down her own bags, shedding her heavy coat now that they were indoors.
"Hi" Melanie said as she glanced at the pretty blonde, tucking a lock of her own fiery red hair behind her ear. She smiled as she began unpacking her own duffle, pausing to offer her hand for a hello, "My names Melanie, but most people call me Mel," she added

Something was different. There was a shift in the air and a dull thump, thump, thump that filled the usually silent Alaskan wasteland. A polar bear looked up from an almost barren whale carcass, sniffing the air with his black nose. Yes, something was not right. He turned his massive body and made his way northbound, not able to shake the odd feeling.

{So I'm still trying to figure how I want to write Ryans POV so the first few posts might be different.}

Glancing up from her bag to the hand now extended to her, she managed a small smile to be polite. "Jenna," she answered, pulling her glove off to give hers a shake. "Nice to meet you." Turning back to her bag, she set a few things away before pulling off her heavy coat as well, as she cast a glance back over at the girl. She seemed strong and independant, and maybe a little wild because of the red hair. She seemed nice enough, Jenna just hoped they would get along.

Melanie received a quite vibe from the girl, not cold or harsh, but she sensed that it would take some warming up before the two became to close. Melanie returned to unpacking for a few minuets when someone appeared at the door.
"Knock, knock" they said and entered. It was Jack, who, apart from Doc and his wife, was the oldest on the team at thirty five years. Melanie didn't know very much about him, except that he had two small kids and a wife back home, "Found some extra blankets in the storage," Jack said and tossed them on the bed, "And Doc says we have a half hour to unpack and say our hellos before he wants us to take out the snowmobiles and mark the territory," he finished with a smile and left.
Melanie glanced at Jenna, "Only been up here a few hours and we're headed out" she joked lightly.

Just as suspected. From far off, the bear could just make out the base on the horizon. He never traveled down there much, only once or twice when he was really curious and both times it had been abandoned. Now, there were small black figures, people, making their way in and out of the little base. The bear turned and walked on. Something else wasn't quite right. It was gradually getting warmer, spring was coming.

{You are welcome to play any of the characters, Doc, his wife and Jack, if you want. They're pretty much there for decoration. Hee hee}

((I don't know what 'cannon' means, but I'm guessing it's an extra character? And one more question: is Doc really a doctor or is it just his nick name?))

Jenna smiled, giving a little chuckle. "That's one thing about these jobs. No time is wasted." She finished packing her things away and making sure everything was in place. She never brought much onto these trips, only the essential clothing and toiletries. The only personal items she had was a small photograph of her brother Jeremy and her, which she fixed to the wall beside her pillow, and a small charm neclace he had given to her a few years ago, which she always wore around her neck. After everything looked good, she gathered her gear for outside and glanced at Melanie to see if she was ready yet.

Melanie noted and finished unpacking. She made her bed, adding on the extra blankets before kicking her empty bag under her bed. She glanced up and noticed Jenna's picture. She smiled, "Who's that?" she asked indicating to the picture. She picked up her gear, slipping on her heavy coat and gloves before rummaging through her bag and pulling out her camera case.

Jenna glanced at the picture, a soft smile on her lips. "That's Jeremy," she turned to Melanie as she slipped on her gloves. "My baby brother." She pulled on her coat and suited it up, getting ready for the outing. She glanced over at the case adn cocked her head. "Camera's?" she guessed.

Melanie smiled, "Sweet" she said to the picture then looked down at her case. She gave a soft laugh and said, "Oh, yeah. More like my whole life," as she zipped up the case in her bag with the precious camera and filming it. Slinging her bag over her shoulder she headed out, meeting the rest of the team who were gathered around the snowmobiles. Jack had a stack of little orange flags resting on his shoulder.
Doc smiled at the girls, "Okay, I think about a 100 mile radius out should be good, right?" he turned to his wife who smiled. Doc nodded, "Right, two to a snowmobile, lets head out," he said and mounted one of the machines, firing up the engine.

Smiling a little, Jenna followed Melanie to the snowmobile garage. She nodded a slight hello to Roy, who came to stand with her. "Fancy seeing you here," he teased as he climbed onto a snomobile and stowed away his packs. "Care to be my mobile buddy?" Glancing over at the others, Jenna shrugged before climbing onto the back of his snowmobile. They chit chatted while they got ready, Roy challenging Jack to a race while Jenna frowned. "Just don't flip the snowmobile, okay?"
