Um, about the length thing, I'm afraid you can be severely wrong there ... Really, the main thing is luck and fate. If you happen to post it at a good time, when there are loads of people on, then great. As for the length, it really depends on what you are writing about, and if its actually needed. For example, an RP I recently started had at least a page's worth of description, plot-line, rules and character skeleton, by the next day I already had four members ! Of course, it was a popular type of RP (Pirates ...), so it's not utterly surprising.
But you're here to RP, if you feel like writing, write, just make sure it has a point. Depicting how the god of weasel fertility looks for example, isn't exactly needed, so you can skip that. Now, another thing, is to make it gripping, and as perfect as you can. That means writing at your best, and making the least number of faults possible. Remember, the opening post is what people remember most, don't give them a bad impression from the start.
I suggest never starting your RP with stuff like, "Im new, this is a small RP and stuff, i'm not looking for much, but just be nice with me and join. It'l be fun." Trying to be cute and cuddly from the start, without even explaining what you're talking about won't get you anywhere. Another thing is the title. Gods, the title ! It's gotta be clear, perfectly written, typos and errors are NOT allowed, and gripping. Whenever you can, try to get a title from word go, rather than "RP idea, NEEDS PEOPLE !!!" ... To me, that's just desperate and incompetent, a bit harsh, but again, it's a first impression which doesn't leave a good image.
Now, the OP has to contain everything you need, and as I stated, PERFECT ! As little typos and stuff as possible, and nice sentences. Proof read, as many times as needed, and also make it reasonably long. That's all that really springs to mind. Hope it's helped, and all, and feel free to ask more questions.
