The Journey to El Dorado!

Pirates. They roam the sea, starving for profit and adventure. News of a new pirate attack is spreading fast. The King of England's daughter has been seized by these bloody creatures and brought upon a ship. Only one crew of savages could ever think of doing such a thing: The Ratgrins! The question is: Why?

Only the Captain, first mate, and scholar know the real reason behind the abduction. For, it is not as simple as petty kidnapping. Captain has far bigger plans. In fact, his plans are enormous. He and his clever scholar have spent the last several years of their lives exploring a peculiar theory and they'd finally deciphered the many clues. They will be traveling to the lost city of El Dorado. In order for their mission to be possible, however, they must have royal blood aboard their ship, as it's the only way to pass the golden gates. Their journey will not be easy, for unheard of forces are at work here in this magical city, heavily guarded and not at all easy to locate. Still, the mad men continue in their near-possible mission. They continue with both mythological and mortal obstacles in their way.

This is where your story starts. Maybe you are a member of the Ratgrins, indulging in whiskey, treasure, the sea, and battle, in store for one hell of an adventure. Maybe you're a British solider, bent on saving the princess for your honor. Perhaps you're a bounty hunter, looking to steal back the princess and maybe kill a couple infamous criminals for the massive reward. You could be the Princess' adoring fiance, who's been arranged to marry her from a young age. You might be the captain, maybe even the kidnapped daughter yourself.

Whoever you are, know that around these parts of town, even dead men tell tales.

TO-KNOW
Ahoy! Average here. I have some big plans for this roleplay. We'll start of with the lovely, typical pirate deal and slowly delve into the afforementioned grander adventure. The captain will eventually tell his faithful crew about his scheming, and some can choose to drop out while others can stay with him in his ludicrous, highly dangerous, more-than-likely-fatal quest. They'll face things like the cracken and sirens and mermaids and a ghost ship and freakish storms before they make it to the gates to El Dorado. Once they make it, the roleplay is over- BUT, a sequel could be made about their time in El Dorado, which would be just as interesting. That one would deal with associating with the natives, somehow taking the gold, bringing it back out, as well as eventually returning the princess if she stayed that far into the story.

Basically, this roleplay will be AWESOME if we have peeps who will stick around. :) I'd love to finish this little baby of mine, and I can only do it with your help!

RULES
  • First of all, don't be scared or shy to talk to me. Good role plays are built through communication. If you need any help, or have any questions, I'm just a PM away! I'm a friendly internet user, don't worry. Amour is too. So don't forget to ask Amour as well.
  • Reserve a position in the OOC!
  • First post your skeleton in the OOC to be accepted, then once I have given you to okay, submit it to the tab to be accepted officially!
  • Getting characters is first come, first serve except for the captain and prime minister's daughter, which people will have to compete for.
  • I want the characters to be realistic but not boring. Stick to just a few traits as the core of your character, then flesh them out with other things. I also don't want duplicates, meaning that before making a character, look at the ones already made so your character can be original and a bigger contribution to the roleplay!
  • Your posts should be AT LEAST two paragraphs. I personally vary from three to eight or nine per post, depending on what's happening.
  • Be assertive! Don't just walk around campus by yourself for thirty posts waiting for someone else to talk to you, move your character's tush over to where other people are and start conversation. However, try not to crowd around. Let people have a conversation between two people, because having a group all talking to each other can get tedious. YOU KNOW WHAT I'M TALKIN' ABOUT.
  • Dramatize it up, dawgs. Aint nothin' better than some role play drama to go with yo' mama.
  • A post every day or so is the pace I'd like. I won't harass you if you can't post for a week, but once we hit two weeks, I'll contact you to see what's up. I'm aware we all have lives.
  • You can have more than one character~
  • ENJOY YOURSELF

Hey, forgot to reserve it, but I'm almost done with my character for First Mate. It should be up in the next ten minutes or so, but I want to make sure I have it before someone else hops in and takes it.

I would like some more information on El Dorado, since I am simultaneously writing a story about a pirate captain who goes in search of something similar (Cibola, a legendary city somewhere in the Four Corners region of Arizona, Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico). I want to know what the scholar is supposed to know so I can play him better.
And I'm sure you meant "king" not "prime minister". The king is royalty, and the head of the British government, especially in the 1600s and 1700s. The prime minister is a civilian leader, chosen by Parliament, to preside over the assembly until the government is dissolved and new elections are held, or however the Westminster Parliamentary model works.

Ooooh yes. I want to reserve the Doctor. :D You have peeked my interest.

And I think I may try for the princess. I'll put up a skelly for her. But I understand, if another comes around better, I'm totally cool with that.

But I REALLY want the doctor. I was gonna use her in a steam punk pirate RP a LOOOONG time ago and it never made it to first post. :( So I want to adapt her to this role play. :D YAY!

Position: First Mate
Name:Derek James
Nickname: Atlas
Age: 27
Appearance: Derek stands at a slightly intimidating six foot two inches. He possesses a strong build, being someone who keeps himself in decent enough shape while on the ship by doing exercises such as push-ups and the like. It always occurred to him that strength, while not near as important in a sword fight as speed, could give someone the competitive edge over an opponent, and could therefore be the factor to save his life. He's still quick, quite quick, but still stronger than your average pirate. His skin is tan, and is even considering he wears as little clothing as possible while out at sea, usually just shorts at most, with or without his boots. Derek's hair is black, but he keeps the top of it very short, just enough to protect his head from the sun, and cuts it every two weeks or less, whenever it starts getting long. His beard is black as well, and like his head he does not let it get too long at all, and, whenever they go to port, he cuts himself a handsome goatee. His eyes are very dark brown. He does own nice clothes should the occasion call for it, which it rarely to never does. In all, he carries himself with confidence.
Personality: For the most part, Derek is playful, and will often join the men drinking and gambling on the ship. Everyone on the ship views him as approachable, and accepts him. However, Derek is willing to stand for very little bullshit, and if you press too far he will cut you down. The men recall one instant when, after running out of water on board and being far from port the men were beginning to become very sick from the need of fresh water. It was discovered that one man was hoarding the last barrel of fresh water they had. Upon this discovery, Derek drew his saber on the man and cut his throat without second though. Derek also holds his men's safety above his own, and cares very deeply for the crew, as long as they remain part of the crew. by betraying the rest of them, the man he killed removed himself from the crew on his own. It is this devotion for the ship and her crew that earned him the nickname "Atlas," because they said he held the world on his shoulder.
Reasoning behind the kidnapping: Find El Dorado
Bio: For the most part, his entire life has been pirating. When he was eight years he ran away from home, a life of comfort. Despite his young age he could already tell it wasn't a life he would ever want to live, and so he simply left. The first thing that happened to him was that he found a group of homeless boys, much like himself, who he quickly became the leader of. Even though he was only eight, he lead boys of all ages in a gang in the poverty stricken streets of London. For three years he did that, until, well, the life grew tiresome and boring. He wanted more. In his three years of street life he picked up many skills, the most prominent being his incredible skill with a knife, as well as many thievery skills such as sleight of hand and pickpocketing. It was a good life, but offered little new experiences of adventure. Or, at least, there was no where left to go. And so, one day, he left. He put someone else in charge, his second in command, and made his way to Spain, telling his gang that he was going there in order to start another gang and expand the group.

One in Spain he very quickly came to understand the language, being around it as often as he was, and was eventually given a job at the docks helping with incoming ships, as well as working on ships that were docked. It was there that he learned everything there was to know about ships and sailing. However, the same thing as before happened, and he realized a life on land wasn't enough. So, with that, he found himself a spot on a ship, and at this point he was fifteen. The ship was heading to the Americas, and he was paying for his spot by working. It was dirty work, but when he made it there it was a godsend.

From that point on, he was on one ship or another, doing legal jobs, and, more importantly, learning how to fight with a sword. His ability with a knife only improved, but until this point he had hardly picked up a sword, and so he taught himself how to use it by watching others. Being a quick learner, the sword came quickly. He found odd jobs to do every time he was on land, and learned how to speak French during a year he spent in France. Then, one day when he was twenty-two, on a trip back to the Americas, his ship was attacked by pirates and he was taken prisoner. They were going to kill him, but when they discovered he was not only fit, but also spoke English, French and Spanish, they decided he could prove useful and instead imprisoned him, where they starved him until he was willing to agree to join their crew.

He did, but he did not forget the pain they caused him, and silently swore revenge. Two years later, to take his vengeance, he silently killed the night watch, cut holes into all the longboats save for one, and planted an explosive he made himself next to all the gun powder. On his way out he woke the captain of the ship up, tied and gagged him, and took him out on the last remaining longboat with him. The fuse to his explosive had been lit, and it was long enough to give him enough time to make his way out to see a safe distance, the captain with him. Derek forced the captain to watch his vessel explode and his men die, and then, afterward, shot him in the head and left him to for the sharks to find.

Derek knew after that that he could not go back to normal life. He had spent two years on a pirate vessel, possessed several new tattoos from his life there, and was therefore a wanted man. He found work on a new ship, where he, after a few years of work, became the First Mate.

I sure did mean King. I had the prime minister in mind after my homework, hahaha. Sorry. x_x
Anyway, in this roleplay, El Dorado is basically a city that was created thousands of years ago by people in a religious tribe. All the scraps of information the scholar would find on El Dorado will imply that El Dorado was originally a mountain made entirely of gold that the people carved into an expansive city. The entire place, from the buildings to the ground, is made literally out of gold. It is said that even their trees are made of gold, delicious fruits that act as intoxicants growing all over the place.

They also go to claim that the gods have blessed the people there, being rewarded for their ancestor's good-doing. The people apparently live infinitely longer than regular people, due to the water that runs through their city's river. This implies the prospect of the fountain of youth also being tied to this city. Everyone there is supposed to practice a holy life, conflict and sin spared from their city, warmth, beauty, and love being the biggest virtues. This is why it is so heavily guarded, obstacles meant to keep all infiltrators out so that the city may stay pure.

They will have a society similar to the Aztecs. It is said that the view of El Dorado is the most beautiful thing a man could ever see in his mortal lifetime, enough to woo any visitor into agreeing to be sacrificed to the gods- another defense device. In all reports, no one has ever gotten both in and out.

LovelyRose, you got it!

VonSchultz, I'll reserve the princess now~

monkey child, where it says "COLOR#1" and "COLOR#2", you should pick out colors that you fancy and go together, and paste them there. :) Also, you gotta have a picture! Aside from those tiny details, your character is positively marvelous!!
EDIT: Actually, I think I'm going to make the picture just an option. I don't want the picture nonsense to get in the way of a person's vision for their character. Disregard that bit. :)

I couldn't really find a picture that I thought matched the character I wanted to create, so I figured I'd just write a relatively descriptive appearance. I'd rather not post a picture that conflicted with what I imagine the character to look like, if it's alright. I think I described him enough to where anyone could get a good mental picture.

Gender doesn't matter a bit right now. Later on, I'd like to try and keep the ratios relatively even, but for now you can make your character whatever you like.

Do you have anything specific in mind for the soldier, like a specific rank or service? I always enjoy playing soldiers, so that's the role I'm the most interested in. I'm also considering the possibility of Master Gunner, but the soldier would be my preferred role.
