Though dark may seem so long
For day must follow every night
And everything is alright.
I am always safe from harm
The Goddess holds me in her arms
Lightning striked and thunder rumbled as torrential sheets of rain hammered down on the small town. A car pulled oup outside a recently renovated two story home, and a pile of four fell out of the door, clutching bags and running for the shelter of the veranda, having already said goodbye to those remaining in the car. As the first set of feet made contact with the wooden veranda and met shelter from the rain, the door swung open to reveal a beaming young girl, who laughed at the drenched stated of her friends.
Always the good host, she assisted each of the four guests with shredding their damp top layers and pushed them towards the lounge room where a hearty fire roared, filling the house with warmth. For a while, the five friends stood and sat around the fire, drying off as they laughed and talked as if they hadn’t seen each other in weeks, even though it hadn’t even been a day since they had gotten together.
Almost too soon, a small helping of dinner was set out for the five of them, and they hurried to scrape their plates clean and collect the snacks. Then, they settled down in front of the tea to watch the latest horror movie.
Bad idea, considering what they planned to do afterwards
Two hours later, rather frightened and full of junk food, they turned off the T.V and downstairs lights, and made their way up to the second floor. While two of the friends went about setting up, a few of the others worked up the courage to go into the bathroom leading off from the hostess’s room to change into their pajamas. By the time they returned, the Ouija board was set up and waiting.
It was obvious a few members of the group were frightened, but the eldest – the hostess – laughed off their fear, and so they began. It was something they would all regret doing ‘till they forgot about it.
Half an hour to forty-five minutes after beginning the Ouija board, things began to get out of hands. After receiving messages, strange noises were heard in the attic, and the storm outside seemed to get even fiercer. Another rumble of thunder and a strike of lightning in the yard outside the bedroom window were all it took to have all five friends screaming [though briefly] and scrambling for the bed against the wall. The Ouija board was tossed in the process, and the friends huddled together on the bed, white as a sheet and scared out of their minds.
They stayed like this for the rest of the night, clutching at each other, one of them occasionally muttering the agreed prayer of protection. The candles, having been blown out in the process of the Ouija board were forgotten, the light turned on and rock and pop songs were played on the stereo to try and ease the friends fright. Each of them between 12 and 13 years of age when they experienced their first encounter with the paranormal.
That was six years ago – and only now is the past coming back to haunt them. Only instead of just their own past, they experience the past of someone who lived 2 centuries ago.
This is the first chapter in a series of events for these once five, now six friends. What part will you play?
